Winners and Losers for Raiders in Week 13 vs. Chiefs

Raiders wire looks at the winners and losers from the awful performance in Arrowhead against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Another week and another blowout for the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders ended up with an embarrassing loss at Arrowhead against the Kansas City Chiefs 40-9, adding to their awful point differential of -87.

The Raiders actually moved the ball pretty decent against the Chiefs with a strong running game out-gaining the Kansas City Chiefs 332-259 on the day but had 3 turnovers and allowed a defensive touchdown.

The penalties were too much to overcome with 12 for 99 yards with multiple penalties hurting the offense or continuing drives for the Chiefs. Just an all-around ugly day for the passing game with the receivers being lockdown throughout the game.

The defense actually didn’t have a bad showing. Holding a dynamic Chiefs offense to 4.3 yards per play is excellent for the outlook going forward, especially after a terrible game last week against the New York Jets.

The Raiders were able to generate pressure on Patrick Mahomes, causing the quarterback to airmail throws and pass off his back foot into traffic. The young Raiders’ defense continues to grow and looks ready to finish the season.

Who were the Winners and Losers for the Raiders against the Chiefs? Time to take a look and figure out who played well and who didn’t after an embarrassing Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs were expected to be at the top of the AFC West this season, and they have delivered on those expectations so far this year. But very few expected the Oakland Raiders to be right there with the Chiefs. The Raiders are exceeding expectations, sitting just a game back of Kansas City in the standings. This week, the Raiders take on the Chiefs with a chance to draw even with the Chiefs.

Raiders vs. Chiefs

The Oakland Raiders had their three-game win streak snapped last weekend in a disappointing 34-3 loss to the New York Jets. Oakland had just 208 yards for the game, with Derek Carr being pulled in the second half due to the lopsided nature of the contest. Carr had just 127 passing yards, no touchdowns, and an interception. To go toe-to-toe with Patrick Mahomes, Carr will need to be more effective against an inconsistent Chiefs defense.

Kansas City won its last game, earning a 24-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football in Mexico City. Patrick Mahomes didn’t play up to his usual standards, throwing for 182 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Fortunately, the Chiefs were able to compensate on defense, intercepting Philip Rivers four times in the win. The Chiefs have alternated wins and losses over their last six games, a streak they will attempt to break with a win against Oakland.

Can Raiders QB Derek Carr play well in cold weather?

Raiders Wire takes a look at Carrs previous four games in under 40 degree weather and why Carr struggles in those areas.

The Kansas City weather is the topic of discussion in the lead up to the battle of the AFC West. The Oakland Raiders are rolling to under 40-degree temperature against the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Raiders are massive underdogs with the line coming in at -10.

The reason for the point spread is receiving a beat down against the New York Jets, and the other is Derek Carr’s history in cold weather.

It all started this week on Golic and Wingo when former Raider head coach Jack Del Rio spoke about Carr’s brutal history in cold-weather games. This sparked the conversation that carried over to social media.

Del Rio does have a point Carr struggles are duly noted when he is playing in the cold. His awful record of 2-9 under 50 degrees and a 0-4 record under 40 degrees will follow him until he starts to string together wins in the cold weather.

The numbers don’t help with Carr never hitting the 200-yard mark in these climates and only throwing three touchdowns. Keep in mind three of those losses are with Del Rio as the head coach.

Carr laughed it off this week during the press conference, but he still knows what is at stake this week in this matchup for the AFC West lead. He is determined to get this monkey off his back and raising the standards of what it means to be a Raider. He discussed this with Scott Bair of NBC Sports Network Bay Area.

What is the reason Carr struggles in the cold? Breaking down all of his games under 40 degrees at kickoff, there is undoubtedly a pattered that follows. Let’s look at all four games individually and come to a conclusion about what is going on.

Week 17, 2014 vs.  Broncos

40 degrees, 7 MPH winds.

Carr’s first game in under 40-degree weather came Week 17 of the 2014 season against the Denver Broncos. The Broncos went into the game 11-4 and the Raiders 3-12 with the latter team fan base wanting a loss for draft position. It was a mismatch before the first snap, and it played out that way in the final score of 47-14.

The 2014 Raiders could make the case of being the worst team the organization put on the field this decade and was on full display every moment of the game. Carr struggled to complete passes going 18 of 36 with a wretched YPA of 4.39 and an additional three drops. No one was open for Carr all game, but early on, the Raiders were hanging in and were able to sustain good drives in the second half.

The biggest miss of the game was on a flea-flicker where Carr had André Holmes wide open, but the wide receiver slowed down, causing an overthrow. The game was 30-14 at that point and could have made it a one-score game with a two-point conversion

After that, the game got out of hand. The Raiders were put on lockdown for the rest of the matchup. Carr didn’t play well for sure, but if the Raiders pulled this one out, it would have been a colossal upset. Mark this one as a just bad team overmatched.

Week 17, 2015 vs. Chiefs

37 degrees, 7 MPH winds

2015 season was basically a preview of what the future of the Raiders that ended not even lasting the decade. The Raiders came into the game just attempting to not have a losing season. The Chiefs were the hottest team in football after starting the season 1-5 and on nine-game winning streak coming into the game.

Carr was pedestrian in this game, throwing 21-33 198 yards with a touchdown and an interception. However, he was sacked 6 times, and his receivers didn’t help with an additional three drops, and the whole offense looked flat. Ugliest play of the game was during a red-zone trip where Carr was targeting Amari Cooper and threw up a desperate heave attempting to find Cooper in the back of the end zone that ended in an interception ruining a promising drive.

The Raiders could not sustain drives in this game, leading to a high amount of three and outs, with Carr having a QBR of 21.2 on the day. Technically this is Carr’s best game in the cold, and if the rest of the offense showed up, the numbers on this one might have been different.

Week 14, 2016 vs. Chiefs

21 degrees, 7 MPH winds

Arrowhead is the theme for these games, and this one is the infamous spider wire game. The biggest game for the Raiders this decade and man was this a clunker for the Raiders quarterback. The historically lousy performance is one of the main drivers of this whole conversation about his play on bad weather.

To be fair, Carr did break his finger on his throwing hand two weeks before and could not take snaps under center. His finger was a problem all game with him barely able to catch snaps from the shotgun formation. Carr completed just 17 of 41 passes for 117 yards in the game, he joined only Jesse Palmer as the only quarterbacks since 1950 to gain fewer than 120 passing yards on more than 40 attempts.

The receivers didn’t show up again, adding another 5 drops, according to PFF, with the biggest one coming from Seth Roberts in the red zone for a touchdown.

The Raiders had every chance to win this game, and the play to Cooper where the ball moved at the last second will live infamy with Raiders fans. The defense did show up for this game, causing three turnovers, but the injury to Carr’s finger was too much to overcome once it became a factor in the game for him mentally.

Week 16, 2017 vs. Eagles

29 Degrees, 15 MPH Winds

The last game Carr has played in bad weather came against the Philadelphia Eagles during their run to the super bowl. Carr was awful this whole game when the Raiders defense and running game came to play. Carr, on the other hand, was the reason for the Raiders losing this game.

The game started off positive with Carr finding Cooper on a 63-yard touchdown early in the second quarter, and the Raiders defense feasted on Nick Foles, causing him to be under pressure all night.

The offense, on the other hand, could not move the football, and Carr was missing throws all night and had no flow with his receiving corps to make plays. He ended up throwing a back-breaking interception that led to the game-winning field goal for the Eagles late in the game-sealing another loss for the 2017 Raiders.

This game was a turning point for the Raiders franchise as the man calling this football game was Jon Gruden. Just three weeks later, he was named the Oakland Raiders new head coach, and a fresh rebuild began towards the future in Las Vegas.

Conclusion

There is real credence to the thought process that Carr is not good in cold-weather games. All his performances point to this, but it’s true that the Raiders as a franchise struggle in the same area. The Raiders are 23-30 since the merger and 15-32 since 1980, which is without John Madden. The Raiders got blown out 51-3 in Buffalo in the 1990 AFC championship game. Rich Gannon was 1-7 in games under 40 degrees.

It is just an item the Raiders will struggle with being a west coast team. The drops are an issue for the receivers with 11 during Carr’s tenure as the quarterback under 40 degrees. However, the Raiders need to find a way to pull out these tough games in Arrowhead, and Carr has to get over the hump and use the chatter for motivation.

5 Raiders to watch against the Chiefs

One look at the AFC West standings and it’s clear: this is a big week for the Raiders. Here are the players who must step up vs. the Chiefs.

One look at the AFC West standings and it’s clear: this is a big week for the Raiders. Trailing the division-leading Chiefs by a game, Oakland heads to Kansas City on Sunday to stake its claim as best in the west.

Led by superstar quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, the Raiders’ longtime rival exploded for 28 points in one quarter the last time these teams met, back in September, on their way to a 28-10 win. But since that loss, the Raiders have shaped an identity, and it just so happens to match up well against Kansas City’s chief weakness.

Here are the players that must step up if the Raiders are to win a game that would re-shape the AFC West race.

DE Maxx Crosby

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Raiders’ chances on defense hinge on their ability to bother Mahomes when he drops back to pass, and defensive end Maxx Crosby has emerged as Oakland’s best playmaker when it comes to disrupting the offense.

His 7.5 quarterback sacks would be impressive for any player, let alone a rookie fourth-round pick from Eastern Michigan. Though the Chiefs’ pass protection is solid, having allowed just 19 sacks so far, Crosby can make an impact with QB pressure alone, aided by his long arms and a high motor.

Watch to see Crosby build on an already impressive campaign. According to The Athletic’s Vic Tafur, he’s one of just two NFL players with a minimum of six sacks, three forced fumbles and three passes defensed in 2019, joining the Steelers’ T.J. Watt.

Jamal Adams exchanged insults with Derek Carr’s brother on Twitter

Yeah, he went there.

The suddenly streaking New York Jets dominated the Raiders on Sunday, especially on defense. The Jets sacked Derek Carr seven times and forced the Raiders to bench Carr in the second half.

The game also brought us one of the least expected Twitter beefs of the 2019 NFL season: Jamal Adams vs. Derek Carr’s brother, Darren.

It all started with Adams’ postgame tweet. Adams tweeted a photo of his sack on Carr without taking an actual shot at Carr — it was just a photo of the play. Still, Darren jumped into Adams’ mentions and responded, “Saved for later.” The Jets safety took notice to the response, which sent the two on a fiery back-and-forth.

Adams told Darren to frame the photo, so Darren — who coaches football at Bakersfield Christian High School (Calif.) — responded with old photos of Rob Gronkowski catching a touchdown on Adams.

Bad move, Darren.

Adams went personal with his next insult, calling out Darren for living vicariously through his brothers and mocking his role as a high school coach.

When Darren tried to hit back with his own insult about Adams’ lack of “respect” for his opponents, Adams was quick to point out Darren’s than/then grammatical error.

On one hand, it may have been a low blow for Adams to go after a high school coach like that. On the other hand, I can get behind any beef that features trash talk about grammar.

Adams gets the edge for that.

Winners and Losers For the Raiders in Week 12

Raiders wire looks at the Winners and Losers in an ugly loss in the Meadowlands against the New York Jets

The Oakland Raiders went into New Jersey and laid an egg in a disappointing 34-3 debacle against the New York Jets. The game was by far the ugliest of the season as the team didn’t look prepared for the Jets defense or offense.

The defense reminded us how inconsistent they have been all season being unable to slow down a hot Jets’ offense. The Jets averaged 6.6 yards per play, and Darnold finished with 315 yards passing completing 20-29 of his passes.

Darnold was making sandwiches with the team he had to throw the football, and created plays outside the pocket, picking the defense apart with great throws. With the Chiefs coming up next week, the defense can’t have another performance like this.

Week 12 was the worst performance by the offense this season. Carr completed less 60% of his passes for the first time since Week 2, and the Raiders could not run the football, which is their bread and butter.

Drops were a big issue as well stalling too early drives with receivers not able to hold onto the football. Ugly performance all around but this is more of an outlier when it comes into the offense on a week to week basis

This week’s winners column will be short, but there were plenty of losers. Let’s look at the winners and losers from Week 12.

Things we learned from Sunday of Week 12 of NFL season

Touchdown Wire’s Pat Yasinskas shares 9 things we learned from Sunday’s Week 12 NFL games.

The NFL results from Week 12 were supposed to set up two huge matchups for Week 13. Umm, looks like that may not happen.

The big games were supposed to be Mason Rudolph and the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns in a rematch after the Week 11 game in which Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett clobbered Rudolph over the head with a helmet in a melee that caused Garrett to be suspended indefinitely and 33 players to be fined for their roles in the incident. Cleveland fans set the stage by hitting a Rudolph pinata with a helmet. That seemed to set up a monster rematch for next week.

The other huge game that seemed to be looming was an AFC West showdown between Kansas City and Oakland. The Chiefs, 7-4, were on bye Sunday. The Raiders entered the day at 6-4 and all they had to do was beat the lowly New York Jets to enter next week’s game in a tie with the Chiefs.

But, suddenly, some of the luster was taken off both games by what happened Sunday. Let’s take a closer look at that we examine nine things we learned from Sunday’s games of Week 12.

9. The Raiders aren’t as good as we thought

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Raiders had seemed to turn the corner and had a shot at winning the division or at least making the playoffs. People were talking about Jon Gruden as Coach of the Year. Those things still could happen, but they’re not nearly as likely after a 34-3 loss to the Jets. Gruden, who seemed to have the perfect relationship with Derek Carr, benched his quarterback in the third quarter. Carr had thrown for just 127 passes and an interception. There’s no question Carr will be back as the starter against Kansas City. But things aren’t looking as rosy for the Raiders as they would have been with a victory over the Jets.

Raiders vs. Jets

Oakland won their third game in a row after a 17-10 defeat of the winless Bengals at home. Derek Carr was nearly perfect throwing the ball. He completed 25 of 29 passes for 292 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Three wide receivers had over 60 yards, including Tyrell Williams, who led the team with four catches and 82 yards. Rookie Josh Jacobs continued to dazzle on the ground with his fourth 100+ yard game of the season to bring his total to 923 yards, fourth best in the NFL.

The defense wasn’t exactly tested against the Bengals and if you asked most people three weeks ago, they wouldn’t be too concerned about the Jets. However, this is an offense that has seen a rejuvenated Sam Darnold and the team has put up 34 points in back-to-back games. Oakland’s defense ranks 27th in passing yards allowed, so don’t expect it to be a walk in the park for the team on Sunday.

It wasn’t long ago the Jets were mentioned in the same sentence as the Bengals, Dolphins, Redskins, and Giants. However, they have won their last two games, including a 34-17 win over Washington on the road. Yes, their prior win before that was against the Giants, but the offense is finally scoring points and that’s always a good sign. Sam Darnold threw for 293 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. Le’Veon Bell and Bilal Powell combined for 101 yards and another score. Ryan Griffin led the team with 109 yards receiving and a touchdown.

While the Jets offense is working its way up from the bottom of the NFL rankings, the defense continues to be a bright spot. The unit is ranked 13th in yards allowed (332.4) and first in rush defense (79.1). Against Washington, they racked up six sacks and recorded one interception. James Burgess notched nine tackles and half of a sack, while Jamal Adams picked up three sacks to go with his four tackles in the game. If this group can limit Josh Jacobs and the run game, it has a chance to pull out the win.

Raiders poor road numbers among things to know in Jets’ Week 12 matchup

The Jets will face a red-hot Raiders team that doesn’t perform well outside of Oakland.

There’s a sense of optimism in the air as the Jets look for their fourth win of the season and third in as many weeks when they return home to take on the Raiders in Week 12.

New York returns home to play a Raiders team that is atrocious away from Oakland, and the implications of this game could affect the AFC playoff picture – just not for the Jets.

The Jets want to win now to prove to their fanbase they have the capability to compete in the future, but it won’t be easy against a team that’s been on a hot streak of its own. The Raiders have won their last three games behind a run-heavy approach and a defense that’s sacked the quarterback 10 times in the past two weeks to improve to 6-4.

Oakland will be the Jets’ biggest test since the Patriots in Week 7 despite the fact they lost games to both the Jaguars and the Dolphins before back-to-back wins over the Giants and Redskins. However, the Raiders have been atrocious away from home this season, which gives the Jets a legitimate chance to emerge victoriously on Sunday.

With that being said, here are four things to know about the Jets’ Week 12 game.

Raiders’ road woes

Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

When the Raiders play away from Oakland, they’ve been one of the worst teams in the league so far this season.

Oakland is 1-3 in road games this season and has allowed an average of 32.8 points in those games compared to the 24.6 they allow at home.

The Raiders’ defense has been particularly bad on the away from home, ranking near the bottom of the league in sack percentage (2.8%), yards per pass play (8.2), passer rating (118.5) and passing touchdown percentage (8.6). This bodes well for the Jets’ offense if they don’t turn the ball over and find the right spots to hit on Sunday.

Jets vs. Raiders: Game info, where to watch, notes

Here’s everything you need to know for Sunday’s game between the Jets and Raiders.

The Jets are looking to keep their winning streak alive when the Oakland Raiders come to MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The weather conditions are not expected to be great in East Rutherford, as the forecast is calling for a cold and rainy day. That means both teams are going to have to adjust their gameplans accordingly.

If the forecast stays true to rain, then we’re going to see a lot of Le’Veon Bell running the football. He was slightly better last week against the Redskins, but not where he’d like to be at this point in the season. Assuming New York turns to a run-heavy attack, Week 12 will serve as another opportunity for the star tailback to get break out.

Defensively, the Jets have to stop Josh Jacobs on the ground and force Derek Carr to throw the football. Jacobs has been one of the league’s best rookies this year running behind a solid Raiders offensive line that has carried them to a 6-4 record. Luckily for New York, it has the No. 1 run defense in the league, which will make things tough for the young running back.

As for the Raiders, they’ve been quite the surprise this year. Oakland is right there in the playoff race can’t afford a letdown loss to the Jets. However, the Raiders have had their road struggles this year with only one road win on the season.
