Former USC receiver Deontay Burnett cut by Dallas Cowboys

Deontay Burnett considers his next move.

Former USC Trojan wide receiver Deontay Burnett was cut by the Dallas Cowboys after the end of the preseason schedule. Cowboys Wire has more on this story, as Burnett searches for an NFL home.

Burnett played this past season with Arlington Renegades in the UFL. Burnett’s final USC season saw him become Sam Darnold’s primary target; he ended that season with 56 catches for 1,114 yards and nine touchdowns before entering the NFL draft.

Burnett, a Southern California native raised in Compton, attended USC before going undrafted in 2018. He has spent time with the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles during his NFL career. He has totaled 15 receptions for 210 yards in eight games of action.

After his stint with the Eagles ended in 2020, Burnett found a home with the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL in 2023 before landing with the Arlington Renegades of the UFL in 2024. This past spring season, Burnett had 33 receptions for 306 yards and two touchdowns for the Renegades.

Cowboys workout 3 wideouts, sign 2 hoping to fill gaps in depth chart

Dallas inks two new wide receivers to their offseason roster as they continue to work without CeeDee Lamb. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys are apparently in need of wide receiver help. Short two players expected to make the 53-man roster at the position, Dallas is looking outside the organization for a bit of a boost.

The 90-man roster had 14 wide receivers on it, allowing multiple passes through the chart as reps have been distributed throughout the first three days of training camp practice. The lead dog, All-Pro CeeDee Lamb, has been missing however, as a training camp holdout keeps him away from his teammates. Rookie Ryan Flournoy is hobbled with a knee tweak, bringing the rotation down to 12.

Apparently needing some fresh legs, or maybe just better alternatives, Dallas worked out three wideouts on Saturday, signing Deontay Burnett and Kelvin Harmon.

Burnett, 26, played these past two springs in the UFL/XFL, most recently for the local Arlington Renegades. In 2024 he hauled in 33 receptions for 306 yards and two touchdowns.  In 2023 he played for Houston where he had 27 receptions for 378 yards and six scores and was named to the All-XFL team.

The former USC Trojan spect time in the NFL with Tennessee, the NY Jets and most recently Philadelphia. Appearing in eight games between 2018 and 2020, catching 15 passes.

Harmon was a former sixth-round selection of the Washington franchise and spent this spring with the DC Defenders. He hauled in 31 passes for 375 yards and had three scores. Harmon has 30 career NFL catches for 365 yards.

Dallas also worked out WR Terrell Bynum and QB Reid Sinnett.

10 former Ravens are signed to UFL teams

With the NFL season now in the rearview and the UFL set to debut, we’re looking at 10 former Baltimore Ravens who are participating in the spring league

With the NFL season now complete and the offseason underway, Baltimore has one of the most extended lists of players who are getting another shot in the new eight-team UFL, which kicks off season kicks off on Saturday, March 30, 2024, with the battle of the 2023 champions: Arlington Renegades vs Birmingham Stallions.

A combination agreement (the “UFL”) is the premier spring football league that resulted from the merger of the XFL and USFL.

Russ Brandon, former President and CEO of the XFL, will lead the UFL as President and CEO. Former USFL President of Football Operations Daryl Johnston will lead football operations.

Founded in 2001, the XFL was a collaboration between NBC and WWF (WWE), spearheaded by Vince McMahon. After a hot start, poor ratings ultimately led to the league’s lasting just one season. The league returned in 2020, with McMahon again leading the reboot, but it had to close its doors again after COVID-19 shut things down after just five weeks.

The league filed for bankruptcy and was forced to sell.

A group headed by Dany Garcia, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, bought the league out of bankruptcy for $15 million, eyeing 2023 as its return season.

The UFL has eight teams in Arlington (TX), Birmingham (AL), Detroit (MI), Houston (TX), San Antonio (TX), Memphis (TN), St. Louis (MO), and Washington D.C.

With action to begin this weekend, we’re looking at 10 former Ravens on UFLrosters.

Eagles activate WR Deontay Burnett from the Practice Squad COVID-19 list

Eagles activate WR Deontay Burnett from the Practice Squad COVID-19 list

The Philadelphia Eagles just announced that they’ve activated wide receiver Deontay Burnett from the practice squad COVID-19 list.

Burnett was placed on the list because he was identified as a close contact to JJ Arcega-Whiteside, who tested positive for the virus two weeks ago. Burnett cleared the league’s protocols and he’s allowed to return to the team.

J.J. Arcega-Whiteside among 3 Eagles’ wide receivers placed on reserve/COVID-19 list

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted the Eagles once again.

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted the Eagles once again and Geoff Mosher is reporting that Philadelphia is placing wide receivers J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, John Hightower, and Deontay Burnett on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Tim McManus of ESPN.com confirmed the news.

The Eagles confirmed the news and released this statement on the matter.

The Reserve/COVID-19 list was created for a player who either tests positive for COVID-19 or who has been in close contact with an infected person or persons.

For Arcega-Whiteside, it means if he’s not showing symptoms, he can return 10 days after the positive test or within 5 days if he tests negative twice.

Hightower and Burnett will have to pass testing protocols in order to return to practice.

Eagles young and inexperienced WR corps has a golden opportunity vs. 49ers on Sunday Night Football

The Eagles young WR group has a golden opportunity vs. the 49ers

The Philadelphia Eagles are dealing with multiple injuries at the wide receiver position and now with an extremely thin and inexperienced wide receiver group set to face the San Francisco 49ers, it’s a primetime opportunity for a few players to turn the “next man up” motto into a permanent fixture.

Wentz led the Eagles’ on a four-game winning streak to end last season and he did it mainly with tight end Zach Ertz and a cast of throw-ins that included the ascending Greg Ward.

Wentz had a synergy with the young guys and with most of his star playmakers dealing with an injury, the 2020 version of the Eagles wide receiving corps could catapult the team on a much-needed winning streak.

The Eagles wide receiving corp will enter the Sunday night matchup with three career total touchdowns.

Rookie wide receiver John Hightower led the Eagles in wide receiver snaps against the Bengals last week and he adds an element of size and speed that’ll be much needed.  Adrian Killins is the wild card and could shock some fans and analysts on Sunday.

The undrafted rookie standout is similar to Darren Sproles and could really become a weapon in the open field or out of the slot for Carson Wentz and company.

Eagles elevate DB Grayland Arnold, WR Deontay Burnett from the practice squad to the active roster

Eagles elevate DB Grayland Arnold, WR Deontay Burnett from the practice squad to the active roster

Adding to the bevy of roster moves made on Saturday, the Philadelphia Eagles elevated safety Grayland Arnold and wide receiver, Deontay Burnett, up from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday night’s contest against the San Francisco 49ers.

Arnold could see time in the slot or at the safety position, allowing Nickell Robey-Coleman or Jalen Mills to take snaps at the outside cornerback position. Burnett saw reps at wide receiver in Week 3 and could see a huge dose of targets in the 49ers banged-up defense.
