Former Ole Miss LB Austin Keys commits to Auburn

Auburn is building one of the best transfer classes in the country.

Auburn is building one of the best transfer portal classes in the country and on Saturday it got even better with the addition of former Ole Miss linebacker [autotag]Austin Keys[/autotag].

Keys entered the transfer portal on Jan. 6 and quickly became a priority target. He took an official visit to the Plains this weekend and capped the visit off with a commitment.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder broke out in 2022 for the Rebels, making 39 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, forcing a fumble, and recovering a fumble in 13 games. He redshirted the 2020 season and appeared in six games in 2021 before an injury ended his season.

The Collins, Mississippi, native will have two seasons of eligibility left and he projects to be a middle linebacker.

The Tigers are set to return a trio of veterans in Cam Riley, Wesley Steiner and Desmond Tisdol but none of them are proven playmakers.

Keys is the second transfer linebacker Auburn has landed this offseason, former LSU Tiger [autotag]DeMario Tolan[/autotag] announced he was coming to Auburn on Jan. 8. Tolan appeared in 12 games for LSU last season and made 10 tackles as a true freshman. These additions give new linebacker coach [autotag]Josh Aldridge[/autotag] two players who can make an impact for multiple seasons.

Auburn has now landed 12 players from the transfer portal as [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] works to flip Auburn’s roster ahead of his first season. Six of those additions have been along the front seven of the defense.

Former LSU linebacker DeMario Tolan signs with SEC foe

The linebacker is heading to Auburn after a promising true freshman season.

Former Tigers linebacker [autotag]DeMario Tolan[/autotag] is sticking in the conference as the transfer announced his commitment to Auburn after entering the portal last week. Tolan signed with the new group of Tigers on Sunday morning.

Tolan took a visit to Auburn late last week.

A four-star recruit who ranked as the No. 204 overall player in the country in the 2022 class, per the 247Sports Composite, Tolan saw quite a bit of action in the linebacker rotation as a true freshman. The Orlando native appeared in 12 games and notched 10 solo tackles, and he was expected by many to play a significant role in the rotation next season.

His decision to enter the portal came as a surprise and leaves LSU a bit thin at linebacker heading into 2023 as he was vying for increased playing time by the end of the season.

Auburn adds former LSU LB DeMario Tolan from transfer portal

Tolan becomes the second addition from the transfer portal in as many days for Hugh Freeze and staff.

As the old saying goes, “what’s meant to be will always find a way.”

In what has become a trend, the new-look Auburn staff is doing what the former staff could not do at times by closing the deal on top recruits. Hugh Freeze and staff did that again Sunday morning by earning the signature of former LSU linebacker [autotag]DeMario Tolan[/autotag].

Tolan was a strong Auburn target from the class of 2022 before deciding to take his talents to Baton Rouge. The four-star linebacker from Dr. Phillips High School in Central Florida signed with Auburn Sunda after spending his freshman season at LSU. He visited the Plains on Jan. 5, one day after entering the portal. While on his visit, he said that he felt Auburn would be a great fit for him.

“The highlight of my visit today was just the new staff and how well I feel like they’re going to be for me,” Tolan said. “Just overall I feel like it’d be a great place for me moving forward. I think that they’re at a great place — just a great coach. I feel like they’re going to be a perfect fit for me and just happy to have it be my first visit.”

Missouri and Colorado were also in the mix to earn his commitment, but Auburn won the sweepstakes. His commitment is the second in as many days from the transfer portal. Former Maryland DL Mosiah Nasili-Kite committed to Auburn Saturday, nearly 24 hours after visiting the Plains.

Auburn could be a ‘perfect fit’ for LSU transfer DeMario Tolan

Tolan was a high priority for Auburn before he signed with LSU in 2021. Could fate lead him back to the Plains?

Auburn placed former four-star linebacker [autotag]DeMario Tolan[/autotag] high on their priority list during his recruitment. However, Tolan elected to sign with SEC-rival LSU out of Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida.

After spending a season on the Bayou, fate may have brought him back to the Plains.

Tolan was on campus Thursday to visit the campus that he got to know so well, and was able to meet new Auburn coaches including linebackers coach Josh Aldridge and defensive coordinator Ron Roberts. In an interview with Auburn Undercover (subscription required), Tolan says that he feels Auburn will be a great place for him to get a fresh start.

Tolan appeared in nine games for LSU in 2022, recording nine total tackles. His best game took place against Ole Miss on Oct. 22, when he made four stops. Before signing with LSU, Tolan was the No. 20 linebacker from the 2022 recruiting cycle according to 247Sports and was the No. 24 overall prospect from the state of Florida.

Tolan will also take visits to Missouri and Colorado before making his decision.

Promising LSU linebacker enters the transfer portal

DeMario Tolan’s decision came as a surprise to many.

This week started with a big win for [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the LSU Tigers as they dominated the Purdue Boilermakers in the Citrus Bowl to finish Kelly’s first season on the Bayou with 10 wins.

However, the Tigers received a bit of bad news recently as freshman linebacker [autotag]DeMario Tolan[/autotag] has entered his name into the transfer portal. Tolan was a four-star recruit from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando and was an early enrollee for the 2022 recruiting class.

Tolan was projected to garner playing time in 2022, and he did just that. He played in 10 games and finished the season with nine tackles. That is why this decision came as a shock to a lot of people. He came to the bayou and played early but he still entered the transfer portal.

He may choose to take his name out of the portal and return to LSU, but for now, he will explore his options with other top teams in the country.

All-American Florida LB gets in-home visit from Georgia Football

UGA pays a visit to an All-American LB…

Georgia football has a playoff date with Michigan on New Year’s Eve but until then, coach Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs staff will be working just as hard on the recruiting trail as they are preparing for the Wolverines.

Early signing day (Dec. 15) is quickly approaching and signals the most important time in recruiting, as most future Bulldogs will sign in this period.

Among the string of recent in-home visits by Georgia is 2022 four-star linebacker Demario Tolan.

Tolan is currently an LSU commit, but with the recent staff change in Baton Rouge, the Dawgs could have a shot at landing the Orlando native.

Tolan (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) is rated as the No. 21 linebacker in the country, the No. 23 player in the state of Florida and the No. 202 recruit overall in the 2022 class, per 247Sports.

The All-American attended the Bulldogs final two home games.

Auburn and LSU have also paid a visit to Tolan in the last week.

Georgia is looking to add to its impressive No. 2 ranked class.

Here’s Tolan going through drills at a NextGen All-America Camp:

4-star Florida OL: ‘Coach Caldwell is a legend’

Come Sept. 1, college coaches can begin directly contacting 2023 prospects in the junior class. Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips four-star offensive lineman Payton Kirkland believes an offer from Clemson may be coming his way, based on what he has heard …

Come Sept. 1, college coaches can begin directly contacting 2023 prospects in the junior class.

Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips four-star offensive lineman Payton Kirkland believes an offer from Clemson may be coming his way, based on what he has heard from offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell.

Kirkland (6-5, 330) is ranked as the No. 9 offensive tackle in the country and the No. 123 overall prospect regardless of position in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

“Coach Caldwell told me to look for it September 1st, we got something for you,” he told The Clemson Insider.

Caldwell has been Kirkland’s primary recruiter for the Tigers.

“It means a lot,” Kirkland said regarding Clemson’s patient recruiting approach. “The majority of programs offer you because someone else offers you, but I really like that they’ve been taking the time over these past — it’s been over two years that I’ve been in contact with Clemson — I feel like it’s finally about to take it to the next level pretty soon.”

“They’re very genuine. They’re actually interested in you as a player, especially following through over these past two years,” he added. “It means a lot more than just being offered and never talked to again.”

Kirkland is quite fond of Caldwell and the rest of Clemson’s coaching staff.

“Coach Caldwell is a legend,” he said. “There’s not too many offensive line coaches that can do what he does. My impression of Coach Caldwell, he’s a great guy.”

Kirkland didn’t want this to come across as being mean, but he views Caldwell, 67, as a grandpa-Esque figure, especially because he doesn’t have a grandfather himself.

According to Kirkland, Caldwell is a fan of his size, but he also likes the fact that he can move very well for his stature.

Kirkland got to take in Clemson earlier this summer, but it wasn’t exactly the experience he had hoped for.

That’s because he had gotten injured the day prior to his Clemson visit, so he wasn’t really able to work out. He was taken around in a golf cart and admitted that it was hard to be a spectator at the Dabo Swinney Camp.

“I’m blessed that they’re still interested in me and that everything worked out,” he said.

Kirkland enjoyed the tour and what Clemson had to offer, but it was also tough for him because he had to crutch around the facilities.

“I’ll be definitely getting back up there, so I can actually take a visit this time,” he added.

Kirkland doesn’t think he’ll be able to make any gameday visits this year, but he certainly plans on taking a couple of visits following the season.

Fortunately, Kirkland has received a clean bill of health and was only sidelined for three weeks after his initial injury.

Now that he’s back healthy, Kirkland said that first and foremost, there’s a championship mindset that comes with his junior season. He’s also been able to go up against four-star outside linebacker DeMario Tolan every day in practice.

Iron sharpens iron.

Tolan joined Dr. Phillips High School for his senior campaign and received plenty of interest from Clemson, including an official scholarship offer, before eventually committing to LSU.

With that being said, how would Kirkland describe himself as a player to someone who hasn’t seen him play before?

“I would say physical, very physical and that I play very passionately,” he said.

Kirkland constituted his strengths as his explosiveness and playing through the whistle/his ability to finish plays.

As far as a school at the next level is concerned, Kirkland looks at players at his position and their success. He also is interested in those players who didn’t follow through with football coming out of those programs because he’d like to see life after football.
