Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware: Cowboys team leaders must step up, injured or not

DeMarcus Ware has lived through in-season turmoil. He was right there in the midst of one of his nine Pro Bowl campaigns when the Cowboys fired head coach Wade Phillips in early November 2010, and all he did was keep creating havoc on the field to eventually lead the league in sacks that season.

So Ware knows a thing or two about playing through the kind of adversity and noise the 2024 Cowboys are facing.

But in a one-on-one conversation with Cowboys Wire this week, the Hall of Famer admitted that this year’s bunch is exponentially more hamstrung simply due to the number- and the caliber- of players currently missing in action.

“Number one, you’ve got to have everybody there,” Ware said. “When you don’t have DeMarcus Lawrence and you don’t have Micah Parsons and a couple other interior guys, you can see that everybody’s not on the same accord. When you have [coordinator Mike] Zimmer coming in with his new defense, you can see how great they played in the first game. And then as guys start to become missing and not playing as injured, the other guys didn’t pick up the pieces. You can see missed gap alignments, you can see missed assignments, guys not being where they need to be.”

Injuries are a part of the game, for every club, in every year. How a team deals with that eventuality usually ends up deciding their fate. But as Ware points out, the real work on that front should have actually happened months ago, with the younger, newer, and less experienced names who have been thrust into bigger roles.

“It’s hard to go through a stretch like that, but that’s when you start to see true leadership. When you have guys out, are you actually pouring into the guys that are second- and third-stringers? And that starts in the offseason,” he explained. “When you pour into the guys in the offseason- from minicamp to training camp all the way to the season- the starters aren’t always going to be out there, but their aura, their feel, their spirit, is going to be out there in those players, and they actually play to a higher level, and that’s what I’m not seeing.”

The seven-time All-Pro cautions that the team’s current woes, though, aren’t solely on the defense.

“You’ve got to have everybody on one accord. And some big plays have to be made for Dak to get closer to the end zone, because he’s not a guy that’s going to go from goal line to goal line.”

And while Ware hints that the Cowboys’ laundry list of issues is too long to be magically fixed with a well-timed bye week, he says a turnaround- like the one that took the 2010 crew from 1-7 under Phillips to a 5-3 mark the rest of the way under Jason Garrett- starts with getting back to fundamentals and having a select few leaders rally the troops.

“The guys that have the C on their chest, they’re always the leaders. Not because they’ve been there the longest, but because they’ve impacted the guys in the offseason, and they say, ‘You can carry us throughout the season.'”

“Close the doors in the locker room and say, ‘Here’s what we need to do.’ You’ve got to quiet the media by quieting the chatter in the locker room. You can’t let the outside media separate the guys in the locker room,” he said. “How can you quiet the media? By playing well.”

While it remains to be seen if the current Cowboys have it in them to rally this season, Ware is doing his part to help rally the community that’s become his home team since he retired from football.

The Metroplex resident will be making a timely appearance at this week’s grand re-opening of Sam’s Club Cafe in Grapevine. But this isn’t just any ceremonial meet-and-greet; this Sam’s Club location has been closed for nearly two years after a devastating F-1 tornado ripped through the town in December 2022.

“I’ve been part of the Grapevine community since ’05,” Ware offered, “and I remember when [the store] closed. It’s a huge building over there, and everybody’s been anticipating when they’re going to open back up. And it’s so cool for me to be part of this, part of the community, but now part of this grand opening in a new and inventive way.”

The remodeled store will be the chain’s first all-digital location, with no checkout lanes, payments made (and even food and beverages from the Cafe ordered for no-wait prep) via a scan-and-go app, and receipts checked at the door by AI.

And Ware himself will be on-hand to welcome the community back in person Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m. CT.

But how about a return to The Star to pitch in with a Cowboys defense that desperately needs a comeback of its own? Even at 42, the Ring of Honor enshrinee looks like he could still throw on pads and bag an opposing quarterback.

“I’ve still got about 13 to 15 plays in me,” Ware laughed.

These Cowboys could use every one of them.

View all of the Broncos players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame

Randy Gradishar is the latest Broncos legend to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame. View the full list here.

Former Denver Broncos linebacker Randy Gradishar will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio on Saturday evening.

So, how many players do the Broncos have in the Hall of Fame now? That depends on who you believe qualifies for the count.

There are several players — running back Floyd Little, quarterback John Elway, safety Steve Atwater, tight end Shanahan Sharpe, offensive lineman Gary Zimmerman, running back Terrell Davis and cornerback Champ Bailey — who are obvious Broncos Hall of Famers. That’s seven.

Quarterback Peyton Manning only played four years in Denver, but he won the AFC West in all four seasons and won Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos. That’s eight. Outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware spent the majority of his career with the Dallas Cowboys, but he won his ring in Denver. Nine.

John Lynch won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but he, like Manning, played the final four years of his career with the Broncos — and he’s a member of the team’s Ring of Fame. Ten.

So Gradishar is essentially the 11th Denver player to reach Canton. There are others, though. Safety Brian Dawkins played three seasons with the Broncos. Cornerback Willie Brown played four seasons in Denver before a 12-year stint with the Oakland Raiders. Running back Tony Dorsett and cornerback Ty Law also spent one season each with the Broncos.

Additionally, late team owner Pat Bowlen was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 2019. So there are at least a dozen members of the Hall of Fame who Broncos fans can claim as their own. Up next should be former coach Mike Shanahan, who was snubbed again by voters in 2024.

Here’s a quick list of every former Bronco in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Broncos Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware performs on ‘The Masked Singer’

It’s DeMarcus Ware!

Demarcus Ware has a belt in two classes.

As a football player, he dominated the trenches en route to a Hall of Fame career.  Apparently, he can dominate the microphone, too.

Ware recently appeared on the hit TV show “The Masked Singer” and performed as “Koala.” Ware performed the 1980’s song “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears.

Everyone was surprised when Ware revealed he was behind the mask.

“It was awesome,” Ware said. “All my life I’ve always wore a mask, but I sacked quarterbacks doing that. And now I put on the koala mask and no one knew who I was, and so the personality of me actually came out. I got to have fun.”

Ware previously sang the national anthem before the NFL’s Hall of Fame Game in 2023. Check out the reveal below of Ware unmasking himself:

Cam Newton regrets not jumping on infamous fumble in Super Bowl 50

Panthers great Cam Newton regrets his decision not to jump on a loose ball back in Super Bowl 50.

In the eyes of some, not jumping on that loose ball in Super Bowl 50 was a career-defining moment for Cam Newton. Heck, you’ll still see that painful image of it pop up in the replies, over eight years later.

Nonetheless, Newton is taking it on the chin.

On Wednesday’s episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton, the Carolina Panthers great was asked why he did not try to recover a fumble on the fateful February night. He didn’t give an exact answer as to why, but he regrets the choice he made.

“It ain’t no excuse for me not jumpin’ on the fumble,” Newton said. “I should’ve jumped on the fumble. Straight up. The competitor in me, if that happens again, duh. And this is the Super Bowl—all effort goes to, like, ‘Yo, Super Bowl energy.’ That wasn’t Super Bowl energy. And I think that is what hurts the most. You don’t get another opportunity to go back, it’s not promised for you to go back.

“‘Cause next year, that’s when the shoulder injury happened and the year following that, that’s when the foot injury happened. So you don’t necessarily know when it’s gonna be your time. That was your time to seize the moment. Carpe diem—the words that I live by. And I didn’t.”

Well, Newton and the Panthers didn’t make it back after their 24-10 loss to the Denver Broncos.

The 2015 Most Valuable Player would go on a bit of a dip, as those shoulder and foot injuries eventually shortened his career. And as for the Panthers, who have dipped even further, they’re still without a postseason win since that season.

WATCH: Derrick Brown pushes and pulls NFC to wins in 2024 Pro Bowl Games

Panthers DT Derrick Brown helped notch a couple of wins for the NFC on Sunday.

Derrick Brown is making the most out of his very first Pro Bowl Games appearance.

As part of the “Gridiron Gauntlet” event on Sunday afternoon, the powerful Carolina Panthers defensive tackle was tasked with trying to literally push the NFC squad to a victory. Well, he and his partner Minnesota Vikings long snapper Andrew DePaola succeeded—getting Pro Football Hall of Famer and nine-time Pro Bowl pass rusher DeMarcus Ware (and his sled) across the finish line.

Brown and DePaola teamed up to fly by the duo of Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Trey Hendrickson and Jacksonville Jaguars long snapper Ross Matiscik. Their triumphant push was set up by the explosiveness of New York Giants defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence II, the sweet feet and strength of Philadelphia Eagles offensive linemen Landon Dickerson and Lane Johnson and the leaping ability of Chicago Bears defensive lineman Montez Sweat.

Oh, and he wasn’t done either. Brown also pulled the NFC to victory in the Tug of War.

Never. Had. A. Chance.

DeMarcus Ware to be featured on NFL Network’s ‘A Football Life’

“DeMarcus Ware: A Football Life” premieres tonight (Nov. 17) on NFL Network.

DeMarcus Ware cemented his Hall of Fame legacy with his stay as a member of the Denver Broncos. Although Ware spent most of his career with the Dallas Cowboys, his three-year stint with the Broncos allowed him to become a Super Bowl champion, winning a title with the famed 2015 Denver Broncos defense.

Because of this, it should come as no surprise that Ware’s career gets a recap as he will now get a feature on the NFL Network’s “A Football Life.” Some of Ware’s former teammates, such as Osi UmenyioraVon Miller, and Peyton Manningwill get a feature on the episode. The broadcast will also cover aspects including:

  • Growing up in Auburn, Ala. without having his father in his life
  • Playing alongside Osi Umenyiora at Troy, where he fought through adversity to become a first-round pick in the 2005 NFL draft
  • Overcoming personal struggles while he emerged as one of the league’s premier pass rushers for the Dallas Cowboys
  • Joining the Denver Broncos, where he became a mentor to his younger teammates and helped the team win Super Bowl 50

DeMarcus Who? Cowboys welcome Ware to Ring of Honor despite Jerry Jones goof

From @ToddBrock24f7: The team’s prestigious Ring of Honor officially has its 23rd member, although the induction ceremony came with a name flub by Jerry Jones.

The Cowboys’ all-time leader in sacks is now immortalized forever among the franchise’s biggest legends.

DeMarcus Ware was officially inducted into the Ring of Honor at halftime of Sunday’s win over the Rams at AT&T Stadium, becoming the 23rd person to receive the Cowboys’ most prestigious accolade.

Ware was surrounded by ten other Ring of Honor members for the big moment, including Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, Emmitt Smith, and Bob Lilly. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones led the induction ceremony, kicking off the proceedings with a Texas-sized gaffe when he inadvertently introduced Ware as “DeMarcus Lawrence” before quickly correcting himself.

With his family and fellow franchise legends by his side, Ware used the moment to give a shout-out to “the greatest fans in the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys Nation,” and then led the crowd of over 93,000 in a booming “Go Cowboys” cheer to help spur the team on to its 11th straight home victory.

The 2023 Cowboys paid their own special tribute to Ware with a spectacular defensive performance. Having already contributed heavily to the 33-9 lead the team held at the time of Ware’s induction, the defense went on to rack up two sacks, almost 20 pressures, and an interception returned for a touchdown in the 43-20 blowout.

Micah Parsons was also spotted wearing a DeMarcus Ware T-shirt during pregame warmups.

Ware was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer; Jones surprised him a few weeks later with the Ring of Honor announcement.

“I’m lost for words right now,” Ware said then. “Canton was great. But this is my home.”

More specifically, Ware’s name will live right next to Larry Allen’s at the team’s home venue from this day forward.

DeMarcus Ware to be inducted into Cowboys’ Ring of Honor on Sunday

From @ToddBrock24f7: The Cowboys’ all-time sacks leader will become the 23rd person to have his name placed on the AT&T Stadium walls during a Week 8 ceremony.

The most prestigious club in the Cowboys franchise is getting its 23rd member.

DeMarcus Ware will be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor at AT&T Stadium during a halftime ceremony this Sunday when the Cowboys host the Los Angeles Rams. The Cowboys made the announcement on Wednesday.

The organization had previously said that the Cowboys’ all-time sacks leader would have his name immortalized on the stadium walls at some point this season, saying it would happen before Ware is presented with his Hall of Fame ring on Nov. 30.

Ware was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August.

Team owner Jerry Jones will induct Ware, with several other Ring of Honor members scheduled to be present for the ceremony.

Legendary Cowboys personnel executive Gil Brandt was the last person to be honored with a Ring of Honor inclusion; he entered in 2018.

DeMarcus Ware to be inducted into Cowboys’ Ring of Honor; Jimmy Johnson still waits

From @ToddBrock24f7: Jerry Jones announced that the franchise’s all-time sacks leader will become the 23rd person to receive the honor, at a game this season.

DeMarcus Ware became just the 371st member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this month, but he’s about to join an even more exclusive club.

The defensive superstar who wore a Cowboys uniform for nine illustrious seasons and remains the team’s all-time sacks leader will be inducted into the franchise’s Ring of Honor at AT&T Stadium at some point this season, said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

The announcement came Wednesday night at the team’s 2023 season kickoff ceremony, with Ware on hand to hear the news first-hand.

“I’m lost for words right now,” Ware said. “This is second time you surprised me. First of all, when you told me I was making the Hall of Fame and secondly, me getting into your Hall of Fame. Yes, Canton was great. But this is my home.”

Ware will become just the 23rd person to have his name affixed to the stadium walls. Darren Woodson was the last player chosen for the team’s ultimate accolade, in 2015. Former Cowboys executive Gil Brandt was the most recent inductee, in 2018.

But the moment, unfortunately, cannot and will not be about Ware alone, even though he very much deserves it. And that’s because of the thirty-year-old elephant in the room.

Coach Jimmy Johnson is still waiting. Jones famously promised on live national TV that the architect of the Cowboys’ dynasty of the 1990s would finally be welcomed into the Ring of Honor, with that proclamation coming during Johnson’s own Hall of Fame enshrinement week.

But that was two years ago.

“There’s no waiting as much as it is, how and when we do something,” was how Jones worded his latest attempt at an explanation. “The waiting term isn’t a product of this process. Everybody that is going to go in there in the future is waiting.”

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Ware didn’t have to wait very long at all, with Jones intimating that this was his time and his year.

Johnson, meanwhile, may have been onto something- in what was supposed to have been his year- when he asked of Jones back in 2021:

“While I’m alive?”

Other former Cowboys stars, on the other hand, seem to have also skipped ahead of Johnson in that waiting line.

The Cowboys owner vowed that quarterback Tony Romo and tight end Jason Witten will be in the Ring of Honor, too.

“They are both going in,” he said. “Write that.”

At this rate, they may also go in ahead of Johnson.

The exact date for Ware’s Ring of Honor induction ceremony has not been announced, though a club official said it would take place prior to Ware being presented with his Hall of Fame ring on Nov. 30.
