‘This loss will make us stronger, we will bounce back,’ Demani Richardson and Layden Robinson reflect on Week 2 defeat to Miami

Demani Richardson and Layden Robinson were confident that Texas A&M will bounce back stronger following their 48-33 loss to Miami.

Every college football team gets handed a humbling loss, and No. 23 Texas A&M (1-1) endured its own following their 48-33 defeat to Miami (2-0) in Week 2.

In a game where the Aggies relinquished their early momentum, the Hurricanes’ pursuit of revenge proved to be too much for Texas A&M to counter. As quarterback Tyler Van Dyke finished 21/30 for 374 yards and five touchdowns, it underscored the porous play from the Aggies secondary.

On a multitude of occasions, Texas A&M’s backend unit displayed poor performance when tackling in the open field. That was coupled with a curious lack of pressure from the Aggies defensive front, as it felt like Van Dyke had long stretches to make plays comfortably in the pocket.

Despite 336 passing yards and two touchdowns from Conner Weigman, Texas A&M’s offense wasn’t enough to claw back from a double-digit deficit. After the loss, Demani Richardson and Layden Robinson spoke to the media to echo their confidence in this team to bounce back.

Below are Richardson and Robinson’s full postgame press conferences, as well as key highlights from their time speaking to the media.

Week 2 Scouting Notebook: A look at potential Chargers prospects in 2024 NFL draft

Here are a handful of prospects for Chargers fans to watch in Week 2.

The second week of college football is here, which means we are back with another edition of the Scouting Notebook.

The Scouting Notebook will feature prospects to keep an eye on throughout the day. While some may think it’s too early to start talking about the 2024 NFL draft, there’s never a bad time to talk about the future of the Chargers.

With that being said, here are a handful of prospects to watch for in Week 2.

‘We have to prepare each week the same:’ Demani Richardson speaks on LB improvement, DL depth, and more

Ahead of Saturday’s season opener, Demani Richardson spoke on the team’s expectations, the progress made on defense, and the QB leadership.

Only a few days separate Texas A&M from the start of the 2023 college football season, and one of the veteran leaders took a moment to speak with the media Monday afternoon. Before the Aggies take on New Mexico in Week 1, senior strong safety Demani Richardson, one of the predominant leaders on and off the field, spoke on various topics ahead of Saturday’s season opener vs. New Mexico inside what should be a packed Kyle Field.

While some expected Richardson to rave about the defensive back room, he shifted his focus on the improvement at linebacker, specifically freshman Taurean York and transfer JD Davis, who have continued to stand out this fall, while noting the immense depth on the defense line, comparatively one of the deepest groups in the entire country.

Richardson’s vast experience in the secondary will continue to aid the development of sophomore hybrid safety Bryce Anderson, whose speed and noted versatility have him slated to take over the nickel corner spot once manned by former star defensive back Antonio Johnson, who is now a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Below is Demani Richardson’s press conference video from Monday afternoon and notable highlights from his time at the podium.

NCAA Football Nation spotlights Texas A&M strong safety, Demani Richardson

Texas A&M senior strong safety Demani Richardson is not just a veteran leader but a proven talent on defense set to break out in 2023.

Texas A&M starting strong safety Demani Richardson may not receive the type of outside coverage he deserves as one of the proven leaders on the Aggies 2023 roster, but credit to NCAA Football Nation, who spotlighted the talented defensive back who is poised to have his most productive season yet behind a stacked starting unit.

Richardson may not jump off the screen like some “twitchier” athletes from the recruiting ranks. Still, as a downhill run stopper with elite instincts who can truly quarterback a defensive similar to the middle linebacker, Demani is your man.

Entering his fifth season with the Maroon and White, Richardson is the definition of consistency, compiling 245 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 2.5 Sacks, 11 pass breakups, three interceptions, one fumble recovery, three forced fumbles, and two touchdowns in 44 games, including 73 (48 solo tackles), five pass breakups, and recording both of his career touchdown returns in wins against Arkansas and LSU last season.

Alongside senior defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson and junior linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, Aggie’s defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin will be depending on Richardson to set the defensive tone week to week, and after the many failures experienced in 2022, I fully expect to witness a breakout campaign from one of the most underrated players entering the 2023 college football season.

Texas A&M will open the season vs. New Mexico on Saturday, Sept. 2, which will air on ESPN at 6:00 p.m. CT.

Eleven Aggie football players named to the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl Watchlist

Texas A&M football has no shortage of veteran leadership as eleven players were named to the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl Watchlist.

A successful 2023 season for Texas A&M would not only mark a rebound for this football program, but it could also serve as a jolt for a handful of seniors preparing to make a leap to the NFL in the future.

The 11th Annual Reese’s Senior Bowl released its watchlist ahead of the 2024 exhibition in Mobile, Alabama. The Reese’s Senior Bowl is regarded as the preeminent college football all-star game and, for some, the first stage in the NFL Draft process.

Their scouting team has been hard at work in identifying the top-tier prospects at every level of college football for the 2024 NFL Draft, and identifying this year’s seniors is among the key staples of the evaluation process. As a reminder, the list does not include many true or redshirt juniors who could become eligible as of December 2023 (or earlier) graduates.

At first glance, the Maroon and White were well-represented, with 11 individuals highlighted. The full list of Aggie football players who landed on the Reese’s Senior Bowl Watchlist is as follows:

  • TE Max Wright
  • WR Ainias Smith
  • LB Chris Russell
  • OL Layden Robinson
  • DB Demani Richardson
  • WR Moose Muhammad III
  • DL McKinnley Jackson
  • DB Tony Grimes
  • DL Fadil Diggs
  • DB Josh DeBerry
  • LB Edgerrin Cooper

Texas A&M has no shortage of seniors with a practical chance of heading to Mobile for the Reese’s Senior Bowl. While the Aggies have a handful of sophomores projected as starters, many from their historic 2022 recruiting class, the Maroon and White will continue to lean on veterans at key positions.

Cooper and Russell are expected to be leaders of a linebacker unit with questionable depth. In contrast, Richardson is expected to mentor a secondary that could boast a potential breakout star in Bryce Anderson. Smith’s versatility speaks for itself, and it’s hard to imagine Bobby Petrino’s offense running smoothly without the wideout’s impact.

With one last ride on the football field around the corner, success in the fall could prove to be a stepping stone for many of these names, taking the leap to the next level in 2024.

Texas A&M’s 2023 Sept. 2 season opener vs. New Mexico is less than two weeks away. After a very successful fall camp with several key storylines coming out of their new luxurious Coolidge Football Performance Center, the quarterback battle between sophomore Conner Weigman and veteran Max Johnson has continued to dominate the headlines, but no worries; an answer is upon us.

Entering the 2023 campaign, the Aggies roster is scattered with elite talent and proven experience, leading to six Texas A&M players being selected to the Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team, including wide receiver Ainias Smith, punter Nik Constantinou, strong safety Demani Richardson, defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson, wide receiver Evan Stewart, and right guard Layden Robinson. Here is each player’s respective team selection

  • Ainias Smith: first-team all-purpose player, second-team return specialist, and third-team wide receiver
  • Nik Constantinou: second-team punter
  • Demani Richardson: second-team defensive back
  • McKinnley Jackson: second-team defensive tackle
  • Evan Stewart: second-team wide receiver
  • Layden Robinson: third-team offensive lineman

All six players, especially the wide receiver duo of Smith and Stewart, will be depended on to steer the ship late in games ultimately. At the same time, McKinnley Jackson’s vast experience in the defensive trenches and Demani Richardson’s leadership in the defensive backfield will ultimately set the tone for a deep and talented unit looking to take the next step in 2023.

‘I’ve been keying in on the small details.’ Demani Richardson speaks before 11th practice of fall camp

Texas A&M senior strong safety Demani Richardson details the progress the Aggies defense has made this fall ahead of the season opener.

As the 2023 college football season draws near, Aggie fans continue to get a glimpse into how the Maroon and White are mentally and physically preparing for a pivotal fall campaign.

On Monday afternoon, Texas A&M football Head Coach Jimbo Fisher and players Trey Zuhn III and Demani Richardson took to the podium to speak with the media before the team’s 11th fall camp practice. Senior strong safety Demani Richardson ended the presser after Jimbo Fisher’s 20-minute Q&A, shedding light on how the secondary fared during Saturday’s scrimmage.

Providing an informative update on how the entire defense has progressed this offseason, Richardson’s progress as one of the leaders in the locker room stood out the most. At the same time, he also touched on sophomore tight end Donovan Green’s season-ending injury and how the team will rally around him in 2023.

Below is Demani Richardson’s full press conference video ahead of Monday’s fall practice and notable highlights from his time at the podium.

‘Physically, right now, I’m at 110%. I’m stronger than ever.’ Trey Zuhn speaks before 11th practice of fall camp

Texas A&M offensive lineman Trey Zuhn details the progress he’s made so far this offseason both physically, and mentally.

Taking for the first round of questioning, Trey Zuhn is set to enter his redshirt sophomore season on the offensive line. He will presumably open the season as the starting left tackle, one of the most important positions in the game.

Standing at 6-7 and 315 pounds, the only thing holding him back is nagging injuries after missing Spring football. Still, according to Jimbo Fisher, Zuhn is one of the toughest players on the roster regarding availability. At the same time, he spoke at length about his injury recovery process and his perspective as an Aggie legacy.

Texas A&M safety Demani Richardson named to Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List

Ahead of his fifth season in Aggieland, Demani Richardson has been named to the Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watchlist, which is given to the best defensive back in college football.

One of Texas A&M‘s essential defensive leaders has been placed on the watchlist for a highly respected accolade ahead of the 2023 football season.

On Thursday morning, it was revealed that senior safety Demani Richardson was named to the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List, as announced by the Oklahoma Sports Club and Jim Thorpe Association. The honor is given annually to the best defensive back in college football based on performance on the field, athletic ability, and character.

If you search for the term “consistency” in the dictionary, you’ll likely find Demani Richardson as the preeminent definition. As the senior safety returns for his fifth season in Aggieland, he’s missed just one start in the 44 games he’s appeared in for the Maroon and White. In 2022, Richardson led the team in total tackles with 73 and ranked 11th in the SEC with 48 solo tackles.

He finished second in team pass breakups (5) last season and earned two SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors following wins over Arkansas and LSU, in which he scored a pair of defensive touchdowns.

As Texas A&M prepares for a pivotal 2023 season, the team will rely on Richardson’s veteran experience and expertise in the Aggies’ defensive scheme to lead a safety group that has true star potential. For the unit to live up to its prospects, Richardson must be both a chief on the field and a mentor to those set to be his heir apparent, such as the likes of sophomore Bryce Anderson.

Richardson is the latest Aggie to be added to a preseason watchlist for individual hardware, joining McKinnley JacksonNik ConstantinouMax Wright, Bryce Foster, Donovan Green, and Edgerrin Cooper.

Texas A&M 2023 college football season countdown: No. 26 Demani Richardson

Demani Richardson’s experience and tenacity for bringing down opposing players will be invaluable for a highly talented Texas A&M safeties group.

Fear not, Aggie fans, meaningful college football is just around the corner, with the start of the 2023 season under a month away! Here at Aggies Wire, we’ll be counting down by looking at each Texas A&M football player that corresponds to the number of days left till the start of the football season.

With 26 days until the start of the season, we’re looking at No. 26 for the Maroon and White: senior defensive back Demani Richardson.

The senior strong safety returns for year five in College Station thanks to an extra year of eligibility as a result of the Covid year. Richardson’s return provides a huge boon to the secondary as he’s coming off a highly productive 2022 campaign. Last season, he logged a career-high 73 tackles and five pass breakups as he finished with an overall 64.5 defense-grade, according to Pro Football Focus.

Richardson’s experience and expertise in bringing down opposing players will be counted on mightily for the Aggies and a pivotal 2023 campaign. Last year, the Maroon and White allowed an average of just 162.1 passing yards per game, which was the best mark in the SEC. Keeping that level of consistency will be a challenge this season following the departures of Antonio Johnson and Jaylon Jones to the NFL.

Still, the Aggies’ prowess in pass defense was executed in no small part due to the Richardson and junior free safety Jardin Gilbert’s combined effort and consistency. With a secondary that will rely on a handful of transfers and young up-and-comers, Richardson will have an opportunity to mentor those that will succeed him, as well as improve his stock ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
