Texas A&M 2023 college football season countdown: No. 26 Demani Richardson

Demani Richardson’s experience and tenacity for bringing down opposing players will be invaluable for a highly talented Texas A&M safeties group.

Fear not, Aggie fans, meaningful college football is just around the corner, with the start of the 2023 season under a month away! Here at Aggies Wire, we’ll be counting down by looking at each Texas A&M football player that corresponds to the number of days left till the start of the football season.

With 26 days until the start of the season, we’re looking at No. 26 for the Maroon and White: senior defensive back Demani Richardson.

The senior strong safety returns for year five in College Station thanks to an extra year of eligibility as a result of the Covid year. Richardson’s return provides a huge boon to the secondary as he’s coming off a highly productive 2022 campaign. Last season, he logged a career-high 73 tackles and five pass breakups as he finished with an overall 64.5 defense-grade, according to Pro Football Focus.

Richardson’s experience and expertise in bringing down opposing players will be counted on mightily for the Aggies and a pivotal 2023 campaign. Last year, the Maroon and White allowed an average of just 162.1 passing yards per game, which was the best mark in the SEC. Keeping that level of consistency will be a challenge this season following the departures of Antonio Johnson and Jaylon Jones to the NFL.

Still, the Aggies’ prowess in pass defense was executed in no small part due to the Richardson and junior free safety Jardin Gilbert’s combined effort and consistency. With a secondary that will rely on a handful of transfers and young up-and-comers, Richardson will have an opportunity to mentor those that will succeed him, as well as improve his stock ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
