Source: Mike Brey to retire as Notre Dame coach after season

The Irish coaching legend reportedly is hanging it up.

Sources have told the South Bend Tribune that Notre Dame coach Mike Brey will retire at the end of the current season. Brey plans to tell his players after Thursday’s practice. Brey, the winningest coach in program history, has held the position for the past 23 seasons.

Brey, who has 481 wins at Notre Dame on top of his 99 at Delaware, will leave a large legacy behind. Under his tenure, the Irish have reached 13 NCAA Tournaments, three Sweet 16s and two Elite Eights. He also has one ACC Tournament championship, one Big East regular-season championship and a national coach of the year honor.

In spite of all the accolades, few of those have come lately. The Irish have missed the NCAA Tournament in four of the past five seasons, and it likely will be five of six after this year. Two of those seasons saw the Irish finish under .500, and this year also is a possibility for that distinction. Based on all of that, many Irish fans began calling for a change, and they’ll be getting their wish.

Here’s to Brey’s career, and here’s hoping his final season goes better with the weight of the future off his shoulders.

Navy vs Delaware Game Preview

Why Delaware Will Win

Can the Blue Hens stop the run? Yeah.

They might not get into the backfield, but they managed to be strong against the run last season, they have the linebackers who can hold up against what’s coming, and overall they don’t beat themselves.

This isn’t a team that will commit a ton of penalties, and turnovers shouldn’t be an issue. The Navy defense has to replace a slew of key defensive parts, and offense also has to start over in several areas, and …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Navy Will Win

Delaware is going to have a hard time moving the chains.

This isn’t a high-powered team – it averaged under 300 yards per game last season – and it’ll have a hard time controlling the clock. If you let Navy own the tempo, you’re in big trouble.

There are some nice parts to the Blue Hen rushing game, but the offensive line doesn’t generate much of a push. The rested Navy defense should be able to hold up and the offense should own the fourth quarter.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

It might not be razor sharp right out of the gate, but the Navy option attack will grind and grind some more as it takes over the game.

Delaware will generate a few good scoring drives, but it’ll get crushed in the time of possession battle and won’t be able to rally back late.

Jameer Nelson’s son punched a ticket to men’s March Madness with Delaware and everyone felt so old

I cannot believe I’m this old. Do…do I have an AARP discount?

Getting older through the lens of sports is an absolutely triggering experience. It’s the worst — 10 times out of 10 I would not recommend it.

Here’s how it works. One minute you’re watching one of your favorite players play in the NBA Finals against the Lakers. The next minute you find out that player’s son and namesake just made the NCAA tournament and you’re just confused.

Maybe this is just one of those “hey, want to feel old?” posts. But I feel like this is more just me telling y’all that I am now officially as old as dirt.

That’s what I realized when I saw that Jameer Nelson was having a nice moment with his son, Jameer Nelson Jr., after his Delaware team punched their ticket to the NCAA tournament.

There were so many emotions involved. Their family cried together on the court. It was beautiful.

All I could think of in this moment was “WOW I CANNOT BELIEVE I AM THIS OLD.” Really.

Jameer Nelson just stopped playing NBA basketball back in 2017. I swear. He was just on the court still doing his thing. And I also swear he was just playing in the Finals against the Lakers with Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic. I can snap my fingers and go right back to that place.

Yet, here he is with a son? Who just made the NCAA tournament? Shoutout to them both, man, but time needs to really chill out for a second. Even Jameer, himself, thinks this is unbelievable.

It wasn’t just me who felt this way. It was the entire internet.

Notre Dame baseball almost atop the latest Baseball American poll

The Irish have made a good impression on Baseball America

The Irish didn’t complete the sweep during opening weekend, but it seems like Baseball America didn’t care much about the getaway day loss to Delaware. It was a game where Link Jarrett’s team just couldn’t finish the job, as the Blue Hens got the walk-off victory.

As noted above, Baseball America didn’t care, their latest poll was released today and the Irish are ranked as the second best team in the country.  Notre Dame ended up moving up two spots, just behind top rated Texas. It’s a bit surprising as the third ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys have the same record but defeated Vanderbilt in two of three games. The Commodores were the number two ranked team in the country last week.

Regardless of where the Irish are, having a ranking the high early in the season is a great sign, one that shows that they are among the top teams in the country.

Delaware charts massive comeback, overtakes Mercer for Golfweek Fall Challenge title

Mercer looked to have an insurmountable lead at True Blue Golf Club, but Delaware pulled off a comeback anyway.

Before Delaware teed off in the final round of its season opener on Tuesday, head coach Patty Post dredged up a pre-COVID memory. Playing in the Loyola Intercollegiate in February 2020, before the spring season was shut down in light of the pandemic, Delaware posted a school-record round of 21 under.

“I said this is probably the best course for you guys after that one,” Post said of revisiting that round at True Blue Golf Club in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday. “It was not a big speech, it was not bringing everybody together.”

At the time, Mercer’s lead at the Golfweek Fall Challenge looked insurmountable. The Bears had played the first 36 holes in 29 under and Delaware was trailing them by 17 shots.

Delaware’s four counters contributed three birdies on True Blue’s first hole and the chase began. Ultimately, the Blue Hens went 18 under in the final round as Mercer cooled off to play that round in even par. That gave Delaware the one-shot victory at 30 under.

Scores: Golfweek Fall Challenge

“We all know at True Blue – the getable holes are the first 15,” said Post. “Then 16, 17 and 18 is going to be where if there’s any fluctuation with a bogey or two, it’s going to be on those holes coming in.”

Post made sure to plant herself at the closing gauntlet, and Delaware’s counters skated through No. 16 with three pars and a bogey and posted four pars at No. 17.

Players input their own scores during the tournament, so the standings were no secret.

“They’re seeing it,” Post said of the run her team was making. “You don’t want them to but they are.”

By the time Delaware’s No. 1 player Roberto Nieves reached the 18th hole, the Blue Hens had a one-shot lead. Delaware’s women’s team had crossed the street from Caledonia Golf Club, where they were competing in the women’s division of the Fall Challenge, and crowded the porch overlooking True Blue’s 18th green to see the finish.

Nieves sailed his approach shot past a front hole location and over a ridge in the middle of the green, leaving himself a 15-foot comebacker. Despite three-putting there, Delaware players erupted at the team’s one-shot victory.

No. 18 had ultimately been the decider, with Delaware playing the hole in 1 over and Mercer going 6 over there.

Post has been at the helm for the Blue Hens for five years and the Golfweek Fall Challenge marked the team’s first win in her tenure. It was the first win period since 2016.

“I think it just gives them confidence that they are capable,” she said.

Mercer head coach Jason Payne, who returned this season after coaching the Bears from 2003-2007 (his first head-coaching gig), has a motto that’s fitting for the way Tuesday’s final nine holes unfolded.

Payne is one of the masterminds behind the Any Given Tuesday social media platform in college golf. The idea that anything can happen on any given Tuesday (the day on which college golf tournaments typically finish) certainly played out at True Blue.

“It was great golf, it was pressure packed coming down the stretch,” Payne said. “Again I can’t say enough about how well Delaware played.”

Mercer had spent much of the past few weeks qualifying back home in Macon, Georgia, in 100-degree heat. After that grind, teeing it up at True Blue, a getable course with generous fairways, presented an opportunity to score that Payne’s men took advantage of.

“While no one is pleased to finish second at a tournament and give up the lead we had, if anything it will leave you a little hungry,” Payne said.

The season is young.

Villanova QB Daniel Smith just threw one of the most incredible touchdown passes ever

You have to see this touchdown pass to believe it.

We’ve seen some pretty impressive touchdown passes in our lifetime. But Villanova quarterback Daniel Smith might’ve just thrown the coolest touchdown pass ever as Madden football seemingly came to life on Saturday afternoon in Delaware.

With Villanova trailing Delaware 27-13 with three minutes remaining, the Wildcats were in desperate need of a score to keep their hopes alive. And thanks to perhaps one of the luckiest and most improbable plays ever, they were able to — at least for a little bit longer.

Smith took the snap and rolled out to his right, where he was looking for an open man. Just when it looks like he’s about to get tripped up at the 10-yard line, he flipped the ball up into the air and it landed in the hands of Villanova tight end Charlie Gilroy for the touchdown.

It was one of the most improbable plays you’ll ever see — and you have to see it to believe it. Even then, you’ll have a hard time believing it.

People were having a hard time believing what they were actually seeing was real.

While Villanova ultimately fell to Delaware 27-20, we can thank Spring FCS football for the football play of the year.

Everything to know about NBA G League pre-draft evaluation process

Rookie Wire obtained every detail possible about the NBA G League pre-draft evaluation process, including all of the known invitations sent.

Rookie Wire obtained every detail possible about the NBA G League pre-draft evaluation process, including all of the known invitations sent.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many draft-eligible prospects not invited to the NBA combine have had trouble getting all of their information to team-decision makers in advance of the 2020 NBA Draft. To combat this, the NBA G League is offering a greater opportunity to be evaluated by team decision-makers.

This information included below was shared with USA TODAY Sports Media Group’s Rookie Wire on the condition of anonymity because the person who shared the details was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

While the G League Elite Camp was canceled this year, a “select number” of participants were given the chance to share virtual evaluations through both shooting drills and an NBA pro day.

Prospects who agreed to participate will use HomeCourt, a mobile basketball training application, to record on-court workouts. The results will be shared with NBA team staffers through the app.

Players were encouraged to have two staffers with them in the gym to assist with the process. The coaches and trainers were required to wear a face mask and gloves during the workout.

NBA Evaluation: 8 Shooting Drills (based on previous editions of the Draft Combine)

  • Warm-Up/free-throws (50 shots)
  • Spot-Up shooting (50 shots)
  • Shooting off dribble/pull-up jumpers (30 shots)
  • Mid-Range/off the catch (20 shots)
  • 3-point drill /3-pointers off the catch (20 shots)
  • Side-mid-side/3-point jumpers on the move (2 minutes)
  • 3-point endurance/catch-and-shoot at game speed (5 minutes)
  • Cool down/free-throws (50 shots)

Each shooting drill can be completed a max of three times. Only the best score is uploaded into the NBA Player Evaluation platform for all NBA teams to access the data and video.

This is how the results look, as obtained by Babcock Hoops’ Derek Murray:

NBA Pro Day: 45-Minute Open Workout

  • This workout allows the draft prospect to share the unique
aspects of his game through a 45-minute open workout.
  • Players are prohibited from partaking in live competition against any other draft-eligible and/or other players, including: informal scrimmages, pick-up games (e.g., 2-on-2), defensive drills (e.g., pick-and-roll coverage, post defense, etc.), offensive drills (e.g., Pick-and-Roll / Pop situations)
  • Pro Day must be a half-court workout.
  • Pro Day is an open workout for up to 45 minutes. If a player does NOT use the full 45 minutes, that is OK.
  • Must be completed on the same date as shooting drills. The player is allowed a 10-minute break in between.
