Report: Sixers to sign Mac McClung to Exhibit-10 contract

The Texas Tech product will reportedly play much of the season with the Delaware Blue Coats.

The Philadelphia 76ers have reportedly extended a camp deal — also known as an “Exhibit-10” contract — to unrestricted free agent point guard Mac McClung per new reporting from The Athletic’s Rich Hoffmann.

Per Hoffman, the undrafted 2021 NBA draft prospect is expected to play with the team’s affiliate in the G League (the Delaware Blue Coats) this season. A product of both Georgetown and Texas Tech, McClung has already become something of a journeyman in just one season, having played stints with the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, and Golden State Warriors as well as the G League affiliates of the former two clubs, the Windy City Bulls and South Bay Lakers.

The 6-foot-2 guard has played just two games at the NBA level in his career so far — too small of a sample size to know much about how he might do in the league with a bigger opportunity, especially with a club like Philly with designs on contention.

But McClung has looked solid at the G League level, registering 19.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 40.3% from deep with the South Bay Lakers last season.

Aaron Henry drops 23 points, nearly misses triple-double to help lead Delaware Blue Hens to the G-League Finals

Former Michigan State basketball standout Aaron Henry has been playing with the Delaware Blue Hens in the NBA G-League this year. The Blue Coats are the G-League affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers. On Sunday, Henry helped lead the Blue Coats to the G-League Finals and nearly missed a triple double along the way.

Henry finished with 23 points, 9 assists, and 8 rebounds as he continues his journey through the G-League.

Henry averaged 13 points per game this year with the Blue Coats to go along with 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.

Sixers recall Zhaire Smith, Jonah Bolden from Blue Coats

Zhaire Smith and Jonah Bolden will get some time with the Sixers as the Blue Coats have a lull in their schedule.

The Philadelphia 76ers will be joined by a pair of fresh, albeit familiar, faces on their trip to Toronto.

The team has recalled Zhaire Smith and Jonah Bolden from the Delaware Blue Coats, and that duo will travel with the team to Toronto for Monday night’s game against the Raptors, the Athletic’s Derek Bodner reports.

Smith, who is trying to bounce back from a difficult rookie season that was derailed by a foot injury and subsequent infection, struggled to carve out a spot in the rotation early in the season and was sent to Delaware where he could get consistent playing time and continue his development. Likewise, the additions of Al Horford and Kyle O’Quinn caused Bolden to see his already small role reduced further and was assigned to the Blue Coats.

As Bodner notes, the Blue Coats don’t have a game until Friday, so there is an opportunity to get Smith and Bolden some practice with the big club.

In addition to practicing with the Sixers, it will be interesting to see if either player gets any game minutes before returning to Delaware. That seems unlikely in a tough matchup with Toronto on Monday, but perhaps Wednesday against the Kings will produce an opportunity.

At the very least, it will be good for Smith and Bolden to get some time with the big club as they attempt to become regular contributors for the Sixers. [lawrence-related id=18783,18777,18005,19331]

Sixers rookie Marial Shayok out for Blue Coats on Thursday

The Sixers’ second-round pick has excelled in Delaware through the early part of the G League season.

Wednesday has been a day of injury news for the Philadelphia 76ers, and it’s not just affecting the NBA club.

After the team announced that Josh Richardson would miss Wednesday night’s game against the Knicks with right hip flexor tightness, word came from Delaware that Blue Coats standout Marial Shayok will miss Thursday’s game against the College Park Shyhawks after suffering a right quad contusion in a game Tuesday night. The news was reported by the Inquirer’s Keith Pompey.

While the severity of the injury is unclear, it’s still terrible news for Shayok, the Blue Coats, and the Sixers as Shayok has been on a tear to start the season.

The 54th overall pick in June’s NBA Draft, Shayok has been thriving in Delaware and turning some heads in the process. His hot start earned him G League Player of the Week honors after averaging 35 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. He is currently second in the G League in scoring at 29.5 points per game.

The early returns have been promising, and it looks like the Sixers may have found a gem in Shayok. Hopefully, the injury won’t sideline him for long and he can get back to developing his game as he tries to become a contributor for the Sixers. [lawrence-related id=19474,19331,19121,18971,18790]

Zhaire Smith to miss Friday’s Blue Coats game with knee soreness

While the issue doesn’t appear serious, any missed time serves to delay Smith’s potential return to the Sixers.

The Philadelphia 76ers recently sent second-year guard Zhaire Smith to their G League affiliate Delaware Blue Coats to take part in its training camp and to get consistent minutes with the team as he struggled to crack the big club’s rotation. Now, it looks like that plan has had a bit of a hiccup.

Per Keith Pompey of the Inquirer, Smith will sit out Friday’s game against the Long Island Nets with what is being called “right knee soreness.” Pompey goes on to report that Smith with receive treatment on Friday before being re-evaluated on Saturday while stressing that the move is precautionary and that the organization doesn’t expect Smith to be out for long.

While it’s encouraging that this doesn’t appear to be a serious issue, it’s less than ideal that Smith is missing time due to the fact that the sole reason he was sent to Delaware was so that he could get consistent playing time with hopes of a return to the Sixers at some point.

Adding to the concern is Smith’s injury history. His rookie season was derailed by a foot injury and subsequent allergic reaction that caused him to only be able to play in six NBA games last season.

Hopefully, the issue is as minor as the organization is saying and Smith will respond well to the treatment and be back on the court quickly. The Sixers still hope Smith can be a part of their long-term plans, and every game he’s able to play in Delaware is a step towards making that a reality.
