NFL Twitter reacts to Deebo Samuel injury scare in Super Bowl

After being initially listed as questionable with a hamstring injury, Deebo Samuel returned to the game.

After losing Dre Greenlaw to injury earlier in the game, the San Francisco 49ers were dealt another injury in the third quarter. After running a route on third down, star pass-catcher Deebo Samuel appeared to suffer an apparent leg injury.

After leaving the field, Samuel was listed as questionable to return to the game. Despite his questionable tag, Samuel returned to the field on the next possession for the 49ers.

Through three quarters, Samuel has three receptions for 33 yards against the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

Following Samuel’s injury scare, the NFL community on Twitter chimed in with reactions. Here’s what fans and analysts were saying during the game on Super Bowl Sunday.

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan should use 21 personnel vs Chiefs

San Francisco 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan can impact the game at the line of scrimmage by using 21 personnel on offense in Super Bowl LVIII.

San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan can impact the game at the line of scrimmage by using 21 personnel on offense in Super Bowl LVIII.

In 21 personnel, the 49ers can deploy either fullback Kyle Juszczyk, running back Christian McCaffrey, or wide receiver Deebo Samuel in the backfield interchangeably. Juszczyk, McCaffrey, and Samuel are all capable pass catchers out of the backfield. Also, Juszczyk is a great run-blocker that should be used as a lead for both Samuel and McCaffrey in the ground game.

The use of 21 personnel will force Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo out of nickel and dime formations.  While the Chiefs have a terrific secondary, they are allowing 4.5 yards per carry this season on the ground. Shanahan should take advantage.

Shanahan better be prepared for Spagnuolo’s blitz scheme that forced four sacks in the AFC Championship. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy won’t need to be perfect if Shanahan balances the offensive attack. Nevertheless, we have seen Shanahan get pass-happy in the past when the Atlanta Falcons blew a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LI.

Jed York reveals message Deebo Samuel had for John Lynch at halftime vs. Lions

The 49ers star pass catcher delivered.

While the San Francisco 49ers prepare for the Kansas City Chiefs and the upcoming Super Bowl, Jed York sat down with Fanduel TV’s Kay Adams on her show “Up & Adams.” During his appearance, the 49ers CEO shared praise for wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

While talking about Samuel, York revealed an exchange between the star pass catcher and 49ers general manager John Lynch from halftime of the NFC Championship against the Detroit Lions.

I love Deebo. He’s awesome. He’s very raw, he’s very, very to the point. I don’t know if you know, but [John] Lynch went down to the locker room at halftime. Hence, halftime, right? You’re down by 17 points. And he said Deebo was just sitting there just shaking. He said, ‘Just tell Kyle to get me the damn ball.’ and that’s who Deebo is. He’s just ready to take over a game at any point. I’m very, very glad he’s on our football squad.

In the second half, Samuel caught six passes on six targets as the 49ers went on late comeback against the Lions to punch a ticket to the Super Bowl. Samuel finished the game with team-high eight receptions for 89 yards.

Deebo Samuel lists Marshon Lattimore among his toughest opponents

Deebo Samuel hasn’t played against Marshon Lattimore in four years, but he was the first corner Samuel listed among his toughest opponents:

Here’s some respect for Marshon Lattimore from one of his best opponents. San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel was asked which cornerbacks had given him the toughest challenge in the NFL at the Super Bowl LVIII media availability session on Monday night, and Lattimore was the first name that came to mind.

“I’ve faced some guys,” Samuel reflected. “I feel Marshon Lattimore is bad. You’ve got Pat Surtain, I’ve played (Jalen) Ramsey every year, those guys right there are ballers.”

Samuel has twice played against the Saints, but he and Lattimore have only crossed paths once, back in 2019. And that game clearly left a strong impression. Samuel totaled 5 receptions for 76 yards, picking up 3 first downs on that afternoon — but he caught just a single pass for a 7-yard gain with Lattimore covering him, stopping him short of the sticks. After getting whatever he wanted from Lattimore’s teammates (particularly Eli Apple), Samuel got nothing against their top corner.

It goes to show how respected Lattimore is around the league; when he’s healthy and locked in, he’s arguably the best corner active in the NFL. Which makes it all the more concerning that the Saints are open to trading him. New Orleans restructured his contract late in the 2023 season in such a way that it’s easier to trade him up until a week before the 2024 kickoff game. Lattimore has missed a lot of time with injuries the last two years and the secondary has held up without him, leading the Saints to think they could move him, get some draft picks, and not miss a beat on the back end.

That feels risky. Lattimore is a special talent. Whether there’s beef behind the scenes between him and head coach Dennis Allen or frustration about his injuries (both freak accidents, not recurring ailments), it’s something the Saints can and should work out. There’s no good reason for Lattimore not continuing his career in black and gold. If he ends up being moved this summer, star wideouts around the league like Samuel are going to feel quite a bit better playing against the Saints.

Why blitzing Brock Purdy could be dangerous for the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII

Brock Purdy’s excellence against the blitz all season is something that Steve Spagnuolo and the Chiefs will have to counter in Super Bowl LVIII.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has been up and down in this postseason, and we’ve already discussed that. Purdy has been late with his anticipatory throws at times, and that’s led to him missing receivers even on the easiest reads. That would seem to set things up nicely for Steve Spagnuolo and the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense, but there’s one thing Spags needs to keep in mind.

Brock Purdy has been nearly unassailable against the blitz this season.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

Against five or more pass-rushers, Purdy has 101 completions in 150 attempts for 1,534 yards, 701 air yards, 15 touchdowns, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 128.6. Even in the postseason, where things have been a little weird for him, Purdy has shown the ability to singe your blitz. His 32-yard touchdown pass to George Kittle against the Packers in the divisional round with 8:48 left in the first half had Green Bay in a jet front on third-and-five, with safety Jonathan Owens as the fifth rusher. Kittle and receiver Ray-Ray McCloud ran over routes from the left side, and as those routes developed, Purdy moved out of the pocket to his right, and made another one of those great anticipation throws  The Packers were in Cover-0, and safety Darnell Savage had to catch up to KIttle on his deep route after trying to bump him off near the line of scrimmage. Purdy made a great off-platform throw for the score.

The Chiefs have sent five or more pass-rushers on 208 opponent attempts, fourth-most in the NFL. And on those 208 attempts, opposing quarterbacks have completed 112 passes for 1,122 yards, eight touchdowns, three interceptions, and an opponent passer rating of 76.2. The thing about Spagnuolo’s blitzes is that they come from just about everywhere. I don’t think he gives you a lot of obvious “Here’s the blitz” keys.

So, that’s where the matchup really starts — Purdy’s ability to read the blitz, and Spags’ ability to hide it.

This Cover-0 blitz against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11 came with 11:59 left in the first half, and it was a six-man pressure. Linebacker Drue Tranquill blitzed up the middle to engage center Jason Kelce, and cornerback Trent McDuffie came the sixth rusher from the slot. McDuffie wasn’t picked up because running back Kenneth Gainwell ran a flat route to the other side. McDuffie scooted around left tackle Jordan Mailata, who was engaged by edge-rusher Mike Danna. A.J. Brown was signaling open on his route up the numbers, but cornerback L’Jarius Sneed jumped it for the interception.

So, Spagnuolo is brilliant at not only devising pressure from formations where you wouldn’t normally expect it, but also aligning his defenders to attack weaknesses in your protections.

If the Chiefs can find ways to break through Purdy’s elevated performance under pressure, perhaps they’ll be able to break that cycle.

Puka Nacua signed a Deebo Samuel jersey at the Pro Bowl and seemed to feel guilty about it

The moment Puka Nacua realized a 49ers fan was asking for his autograph was too funny

Puka Nacua helped the NFC squad win the 2024 Pro Bowl Games on Sunday, earning six points for his squad by winning the Best Catch competition and the Madden showdown with Micah Parsons as his partner.

He should also win the Nice Guy award for what he did after the flag football game when he was signing autographs. A fan in the front row held a Deebo Samuel jersey for Nacua to sign and though the Rams rookie paused for a second, hesitant to sign the shirt of a bitter rival, he obliged.

The moment he realized what the jersey was made for a funny moment.

“Oh,” he said, with his hand over his face. “That’s tough. That’s alright. You’re (in) the Super Bowl, so I’ll give it to you. I’ll give it to you.”

Puka is wildly popular among NFL fans everywhere, so it’s hardly surprising that even a 49ers fan wanted his autograph. And hats off to Nacua for even signing the jersey.

Super Bowl MVP odds for almost every 49ers player

Here are the Super Bowl MVP odds for basically every #49ers player. Who would you be betting on?

The 49ers haven’t a Super Bowl win, and by extension a Super Bowl MVP, since they thumped the Chargers 49-26 in Super Bowl XXIX.

This year they enter Super Bowl LVIII for a third try at securing their sixth Lombardi Trophy. Who would be the game’s MVP if San Francisco can knock off the Kansas City Chiefs to avenge their last Super Bowl defeat?

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

History says it would be quarterback, Brock Purdy. The 49ers are a little different than other teams though in the distribution of their club’s success, so the door is open for a slew of players to potentially take home the honor should San Francisco win.

Luckily for us, BetMGM has odds on virtually every single 49ers player to win the award. Here they are:

(Quick reminder! With these odds, if a player is +500, that means a $100 would win $500. At +1000, a $100 bet fetches $1,000.)
