49ers injury updates from Kyle Shanahan heading into Bye week

Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and Jordan Mason headline a laundry list of injury updates from Kyle Shanahan on Monday.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on a conference call Monday and provided some injury updates for the team heading into their Week 9 Bye.

Shanahan said wide receiver Deebo Samuel is considered day-to-day with a rib injury and an oblique strain. It’s unclear what his status would be if the 49ers had a game in Week 9, but having a week off to get right should be helpful for the 49ers’ former All-Pro WR.

Samuel had a good game Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys before exiting with what the team classified as a rib injury. He had four catches for 71 yards and four carries for 15 yards. He also had a 66-yard touchdown catch wiped out because of a penalty. Samuel will be re-evaluated after the Bye.

Running back Jordan Mason also left Sunday’s game early after re-injuring the shoulder he hurt in Week 6. Shanahan on Sunday night told reporters Mason might have been able to re-enter the game, but they stuck with rookie Isaac Guerendo who was having a strong performance.

Mason will also be re-evaluated after the Bye week.

It stands to reason the 49ers won’t need him to shoulder as much of the workload after the Bye with Christian McCaffrey expected to return. However, if his shoulder isn’t right, we could see Guerendo take over the RB2 carries while Mason heals.

Rookie cornerback Renardo Green, who was the 49ers’ highest-graded defensive player by Pro Football Focus on Sunday night, hurt his ankle late in the game. Shanahan said he’s day-to-day, which is a good sign that he’ll be okay after the week off.

Second-year linebacker Dee Winters has also been diagnosed with a concussion and is in the concussion protocol. He took a pair of hard hits to the head while making a special teams tackle Sunday night.

Meanwhile, the receiving corps took another hit. Veteran WR Chris Conley is dealing with a hamstring injury and is considered week-to-week.

Some good news on that front though: Shanahan said the team is expecting Jauan Jennings to return after the Bye from a hip injury that cost him Weeks 7 and 8. Jennings is third on the 49ers in receiving yards and second in receiving touchdowns despite missing their last two contests.

Shanahan also reiterated the plan is for McCaffrey’s practice window Monday after the Bye in hopes of getting him a bonus practice that day and a full week of practice to ramp up for their Week 10 game in Tampa Bay. McCaffrey will go through a simulated week of practice over the Bye to ensure he’s ready to return to action for the first time this season.

49ers injury updates immediately following huge win over Cowboys

Injury updates for the 49ers:

The San Francisco 49ers paid a bit of a price for their Week 8 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan had a quartet of injury updates after the game with four players who were banged up and didn’t return to action.

Running back Jordan Mason in the first half hurt the same shoulder he injured in Week 8. He left to the locker room early and returned for the second half with his helmet, but he never entered the game in the second half. Shanahan said Mason might have been able to return.

“Maybe he could’ve,” Shanahan said. “But Isaac (Guerendo) was rolling and he did a good job.”

Guerendo had 85 yards on 14 carries in Mason’s stead.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel left the game in the fourth quarter with a rib injury. It’s unclear when he was injured, but he was unable to re-enter the game in some key situations late in the contest.

On the defensive side, linebacker Dee Winters left with a concussion he sustained while covering a kickoff. Rookie cornerback Renardo Green also hurt his ankle.

Shanahan didn’t have long-term prognoses for any of the players hurt in Week 8, but with the 49ers’ Bye week in Week 9, they’ll have some extra time to get right in time for a post-Bye playoff push.

49ers injury update: Deebo Samuel (rib) questionable to return vs. Cowboys

The 49ers pass catcher is listed as questionable to return against the Cowboys after suffering a rib injury during Sunday Night Football.

After Jordan Mason exited Sunday Night Football in the first half, another playmaker for the San Francisco 49ers picked up an injury against the Dallas Cowboys.

Following an exit from the game in the fourth quarter, Deebo Samuel is listed as questionable to return against the Cowboys due to a rib injury.

Via @LindseyThiry on Twitter:

Samuel exited last week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs after three snaps due to an illness. Samuel was later hospitalized due to pneumonia but was able to return to practice later in the week.

With Samuel’s status questionable on Sunday night, the 49ers will need to lean on rookies Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing along with veteran Chris Conley. George Kittle will likely continue to help lead the 49ers passing attack with Samuel sidelined.

Is Rico Dowdle playing today? Cowboys-49ers inactives for Week 8

Some clarity to the suddenly crowded but still questionable Cowboys RB room. Week 8 inactives are announced. | From @KDDrummondNFL

Fans who were confused about the shares each running back would see after the elevation of Dalvin Cook got a bit of clarity Sunday afternoon, though not what they were expecting. Dallas’ leading rusher, Rico Dowdle, has been ruled out from the game after showing up to Levi Stadium with a bug.

That answers the crowded backfield question for now. Cook, Ezekiel Elliott, Deuce Vaughn and Hunter Luepke are all active for the Week 8 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

As for the other sideline, as expected Deebo Samuel is going to try and play less than a week after checking out of the hospital from a bout with pneumonia.

Here’s a look at both team’s full inactives list.

Dallas Cowboys

RB Rico Dowdle (illness)
CB Caelen Carson (shoulder)
DE Micah Parsons (ankle)
QB Trey Lance (emergency QB3)
CB Andrew Booth Jr.
OT Matt Waletzko

San Francisco 49ers

QB Joshua Dobbs
WR Jauan Jennings
DL Kevin Givens
K Jake Moody
LB Jalen Graham
CB Rock Ya-Sin
OL Ben Bartch

49ers injury news: George Kittle, Deebo Samuel active vs. Cowboys

49ers inactives do NOT include George Kittle and Deebo Samuel.

The San Francisco 49ers got good news on the injury front just before their game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

Neither tight end George Kittle nor Deebo Samuel were listed among the team’s inactives, meaning both are officially playing in a massive game for the 49ers.

Kittle was questionable because of a foot injury. Samuel was questionable after a bout with pneumonia. Both players missed Wednesday’s practice and were limited Thursday and Friday.

After going through pregame workouts, both players were good to go in the game.

Here’s who won’t be active for the 49ers:

QB Joshua Dobbs (QB3)
WR Jauan Jennings (hip)
DL Kevin Givens (groin)
K Jake Moody
LB Jalen Graham
CB Rock Ya-Sin
OL Ben Bartch

Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir was also questionable with an illness, but he’s good to go as well.

An interesting twist is that second-year TE Brayden Willis is active for only the second time this season. That may be because the team has questions about whether Kittle will be able to play a full complement of snaps. They may also be aiming to run more multiple TE sets against a Dallas defense that hasn’t been particularly effective at stopping the run.

Kickoff at Levi’s Stadium is set for 5:20pm Pacific Time.

49ers roster moves may be good news for 2 49ers offensive stars

49ers roster moves for Week 8:

The San Francisco 49ers on Saturday announced a pair of practice squad elevations that bode well for wide receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle.

San Francisco elevated kicker Anders Carlson and safety Adrian Amos from the practice squad for their Week 8 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.

Carlson is the only healthy kicker in the building while Jake Moody nurses a high ankle sprain, so it’s not a surprise the 49ers used one of their two elevations on the kicker. He drilled a pair of field goals in Week 7, but missed an extra point.

Amos gives the 49ers some safety depth behind Ji’Ayir Brown, Malik Mustapha. George Odum dealt with a knee injury during the week and is officially questionable on the injury report.

By not elevating a wide receiver or an additional tight end, the 49ers may be hinting that Samuel and Kittle are expected to play Sunday night. Samuel has been dealing with pneumonia that hospitalized him, and Kittle has a foot sprain he suffered in Week 7. Both players are officially questionable on the injury report after missing Wednesday’s session, and getting limited practices in Thursday and Friday.

The 49ers have WRs Terique Owens, Trent Taylor and Malik Turner on the practice squad. Taylor and Turner in particular appeared to be viable options because of their special teams contributions. Neither will be up for Week 8.

Undrafted rookie Mason Pline is the only tight end on the practice squad. He’s yet to be elevated for a game this season.

Will Deebo Samuel play this week? Injury updates for 49ers WR

Deebo Samuel status update ahead of Week 8:

The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver depth is in bad shape heading into a crucial Week 8 showdown with the Dallas Cowboys.

Brandon Aiyuk is on IR after suffering a season-ending knee injury in Week 7, and Jauan Jennings has been ruled out with a hip injury he sustained in Week 6.

Now Deebo Samuel’s status is in question after a bout with pneumonia knocked him out of the 49ers’ Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and landed him in the hospital.

Here’s the the latest on the 2021 All-Pro:

Deebo Samuel injury update

Samuel is officially questionable to play against the Cowboys on Sunday night. He was absent from Wednesday’s practice, but returned for limited sessions Thursday and Friday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Samuel will be a true game-time decision since the nature of his illness will require him to see how he feels after a pre-game workout. Shanahan said Samuel’s health did improve during his week of practice.

“It’s gotten better each day,” Shanahan said Friday in a press conference. “We’ve gone slow with him, we didn’t push him that hard knowing what the issue is and stuff. But it has gone better each day and that’s why I’m hoping that continues for Sunday.”

How long will Deebo Samuel be out?

The long-term prognosis seems to be good for Samuel. He played just three snaps in Week 7 before leaving because of his illness. He had fluid in his lungs according to Shanahan, making it difficult for him to breathe. Samuel could play in Week 8, but even if he misses Sunday’s contest, the 49ers have a Bye in Week 9, giving him an entire week to recover.

San Francisco 49ers WR depth chart

If Samuel plays, he very easily slots in as the team’s No. 1 WR. If he doesn’t play, things could get dicey for the 49ers’ offense. Here is the depth chart behind Samuel going into Sunday’s game:

Ricky Pearsall
Chris Conley
Jacob Cowing
Ronnie Bell

Pearsall probably takes the WR1 snaps if Samuel is out, but the team would have to mix and match their receiving corps to maximize the production of that group. Conley is likely next in line as the WR2 because of his experience in the offense. He made a couple of big catches late last season for the 49ers as well, but they’ll lean on Cowing for some explosiveness the rest of the receiving corps doesn’t really have.

The 49ers also have internal options on their depth chart with Trent Taylor, Terique Owens and the recently re-signed Malik Turner.

Taylor has the most experience in the 49ers’ offense and has a ton of experience as a punt returner. Turner is probably the best special teams contributor out of that group from a coverage standpoint. Either way, neither would be significant contributors on offense for San Francisco.

49ers injury report: Deebo Samuel, Jauan Jennings, George Kittle’s status revealed for Week 8 vs. Cowboys

The 49ers injury report for Week 8 against the Cowboys is out:

With players like Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCaffrey already ruled, the San Francisco 49ers are banged up when it comes to playmakers for their Week 8 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Before meeting the Cowboys in a primetime contest on Sunday Night Football, Kyle Shanahan revealed the latest injury report for the 49ers on Friday.

Via @mattbarrows on Twitter:

For the second straight week, the 49ers will be without Jauan Jennings. Jennings will miss his second consecutive game due to a hip injury. Both Deebo Samuel (illness) and George Kittle (foot) are listed as questionable against the Cowboys.

Samuel played three snaps against the Chiefs before being ruled out due to an illness. The 49ers star wide receiver was later hospitalized due to pneumonia.

Here’s the full injury report:

Out:

  • WR – Jauan Jennings – Hip
  • DT – Kevin Givens – Groin
  • K – Jake Moody – Right Ankle

With Jauan Jennings out, 49ers rookie pass catcher Ricky Pearsall could play an expanded role against the Cowboys on Sunday. Pearsall made his highly-anticipated debut against the Chiefs last week.

Anders Carlson will serve as the 49ers kicker for the second straight game as Jake Moody nurses an ankle injury. Carlson buried a pair of field goals but did miss his lone extra-point attempt.

Questionable:

  • TE – George Kittle – Ankle
  • WR – Deebo Samuel – Illness, Wrist
  • CB – Deommodore Lenior – Illness
  • S – George Odum – Knee

George Kittle, Deebo Samuel statuses improve ahead of Week 8

Thursday practice report had lots of good news for the 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers’ participation report from Thursday’s practice came with some good news as two of their stars were back in action after missing Wednesday.

Tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Deebo Samuel were both back in practice with limited sessions Thursday. Kittle is working through a foot sprain he suffered in Week 7, while Samuel has been dealing with pneumonia that hospitalized him. Samuel tried playing Sunday, but saw only three snaps before exiting the game.

With WR Jauan Jennings still out with a hip injury and WR Brandon Aiyuk gone for the season, it’s a great sign for San Francisco that Samuel and Kittle were both able to make it back onto the field Thursday.

Here’s the full participation report:

Did not participate

DT Kevin Givens (groin)
WR Jauan Jennings (hip)
K Jake Moody (ankle)

Moody is still dealing with a high ankle sprain so his absence isn’t a surprise. Missing Givens would be a big deal for the 49ers since he’s a key depth piece on their defensive line rotation. His absence would open the door for undrafted rookie Evan Anderson to see extended time.

Limited participation

TE George Kittle (foot)
S George Odum (knee)
WR Deebo Samuel (wrist, illness)
DE Nick Bosa (elbow)
WR Chris Conley (ankle)
RB Jordan Mason (shoulder)

No setbacks for Bosa, Conley and Mason is great news for the 49ers. Anyone limited Thursday has a real chance to play Sunday.

Full participation

LT Trent Williams (not injury related)

Williams was back after his usual day off.

2 49ers offensive stars return to practice

Before meeting the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, the 49ers welcomed back a pair of key playmakers to practice on Thursday.

Before meeting the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, the San Francisco 49ers welcomed back a pair of key playmakers to practice on Wednesday in Santa Clara. Both wide receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle were spotted at practice on Wednesday.

Samuel played three snaps on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs before being ruled out for the remainder of the contest due to an illness. Samuel was later hospitalized with pneumonia. Samuel was recently released from the hospital. He joined Kittle on the practice field on Wednesday. Kittle missed practice early in the week due to a foot sprain.

Via @mattbarrows on Twitter:

With Brandon Aiyuk added to the injured reserve, the 49ers will need to lean on players like Samuel and Kittle in the passing attack. Alongside Kittle and Samuel, rookies Jacob Cowing and Ricky Pearsall could see an increased role.

The 49ers will meet the Cowboys at 5:20 p.m. PT on Sunday in Santa Clara.
