Wild.
The Houston Texans made a shocking move on Monday, deciding to trade All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals for David Johnson and two draft picks.
Hopkins was coming off his third straight season of 1,000-plus receiving yards while Johnson looked like a shell of himself this past season. He was benched for Chase Edmonds and Kenyan Drake last season. The trade was so bad that the Madden video game declined the actual agreed-upon terms.
It also briefly distracted the sports world from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
And for that, Texans star J.J. Watt went back to his reactionary tweet about the NBA suspending its season and applied it to the Texans’ puzzling trade.
This tweet was ahead of it’s time. https://t.co/CGs10yDJKj
— JJ Watt (@JJWatt) March 16, 2020
Wild, indeed.
With a franchise-changing talent at quarterback in Deshaun Watson, Watt absolutely didn’t see the Texans trading away Watson’s top weapon for a significantly declining running back. Who could?
The tweet really was ahead of its time.

Did friction between All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins and coach Bill O’Brien force the Houston Texans to make a trade?
The Houston Texans took part in shocking the NFL world when they traded three-time All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals for All-Pro running back David Johnson.
According to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, there were rumors throughout all of 2019 that there was friction between Hopkins and coach Bill O’Brien, such to the point that it would end Hopkins’ tenure in Houston. When O’Brien was given full authority as general manager, it helped him win another power struggle and have even more latitude to make sweeping roster decisions.
As shocking on the surface and unpopular as the DeAndre Hopkins trade is, multiple sources noted throughout past year that friction existed between him and Bill O'Brien that could ultimately lead to his exit. And it did today. How they pivot from this will be interesting
— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) March 16, 2020
John McClain of the Houston Chronicle stated that part of the reason the Texans got rid of Hopkins was because the former 2013 first-round pick from Clemson had three years remaining on his contract and wanted it re-worked. However, it is apparent the Texans weren’t budging.
Texans didn’t want to re-do Hopkins contract with three years left.
— John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL) March 16, 2020
In addition to swapping All-Pro skill positions, the Texans sent their 2020 fourth-round pick and got back the Cardinals’ 2020 second-rounder and a 2021 fourth-round selection. Houston will need that 40th overall pick, eight selections into the second round, to help address their receiving corps. Currently, the Texans have Kenny Stills, Will Fuller, Keke Coutee, DeAndre Carter, and Steven Mitchell on the roster as guys with playing experience in 2019.

What would have been a head-scratcher of a deal had the sports world not been locked in a room with the entire family fighting over the mobile devices and television remote has now intensified from a ‘topical depression’ into a social media hurricane.
It began with the Cardinals’ Patrick Peterson crafting a near-perfect tweet, summarizing the magnitude of the deal without going over the 140-character limit:

From there, the good, the bad, and the insightful thoughts and reactions (the memes) from around the sports world landed in the Twitter cosmos.

Eric Gordon was surprised by the DeAndre Hopkins trade, with the Rockets guard calling the Houston football star a “special player.”
With the NBA on hiatus for an extended period amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Houston Rockets players — like many other Americans — suddenly have extra time on their hands, now that they’re stuck at home under new “social distancing” guidelines.
For those needing entertainment, one of the only sports-related events still moving forward is NFL free agency, since most transactions can be consummated by telephone and/or digital communication.
Monday’s biggest blockbuster trade involved the hometown Houston Texans, who agreed to send superstar receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals in a deal bringing veteran running back David Johnson and a 2020 second-round draft pick to Houston.
Now in his fourth year as a Houston resident, 31-year-old Rockets guard Eric Gordon reacted with comparable shock to any other local fans. “Man, I thought DeAndre Hopkins would never leave Houston,” Gordon wrote on Twitter. “He’s a special player!”
Since Gordon is an Indianapolis native and a fan of the rival Colts, who play in the same division as the Texans, he probably wasn’t as disappointed to hear the news as most others were around Houston.
Man I thought @DeAndreHopkins would never leave Houston. He’s a special player!!!

Texans are a good team. COLTS will forever be my team. Like I said before I love houston.

Hopkins was tied for third in the NFL last season with 104 catches for the Texans, who won the league’s AFC South division and advanced to the second round of the AFC playoffs in January. The 27-year-old has been a first-team All-Pro at receiver for three consecutive seasons.
More information about the trade and the football world’s reaction to it is available at TexansWire, our sister site covering the Texans.

DeAndre Hopkins and a fourth round pick go to Cards for David Johnson and a second round pick this year and a fourth round pick next year.

DeAndre Hopkins going to Arizona rekindles thoughts of other wide receiver trades.
The Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans swung a big trade Monday. Arizona landed All-World WR Deandre Hopkins and a fourth-round pick for David Johnson and a second-round pick this year and a fourth-rounder next year. Boom. A look at other big-name wide receivers who have been traded.
According to various reports, the Texans sent Hopkins to the Cardinals along with a fourth-round pick for running back David Johnson and a second-round pick.
The Bills are slated to face wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins again in 2020, pending a change of plans in a developing trade. A shocking one.
According to Texans Wire, the Texans sent Hopkins to the Cardinals along with a fourth-round pick for running back David Johnson and a second-round pick.
Both players involved in the deal are former All-Pro selections, but many are looking at this one wondering what the Texans were thinking? While both have had career successes, Hopkins has remained incredibly healthy in his career, while Johnson has battled injury.
Those who follow the Bills might also be thinking of a fun matchup we’re going to get once again in 2020.
With Hopkins reportedly heading to Arizona, the Bills will travel to face them next season. That means Tre’Davious White vs. Hopkins is en route once again.
The two players have sparred against one another in a matchup between one of the league’s best receivers facing one of the best corners a few times in their careers. Unfortunately in their most recent meeting, Hopkins got the best of White, probably. Late in the game after being relatively quiet throughout it, he turned things around and ended up with six catches for 90 yards.
In the head-to-head prior to that, Hopkins was actually held pretty well by White. He had a touchdown with White in coverage early in that game, then White kept him quiet.
If the Hopkins to Cardinals trade does happen, that’ll be a fun matchup circle on the schedule. For what it’s worth, neither team has officially announced the deal yet and perhaps circumstances can change. If that’s the case, that’ll take place before Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the new NFL league year begins.

He has no guaranteed money remaining in the three years left on his current deal.
The Arizona Cardinals have reportedly agreed to a trade that will bring them star receiver DeAndre Hopkins. It looks like the Cardinals got he better end of the deal by far. However, there is apparently a reason why the Houston Texans were willing to trade him.
With three years remaining on his current contract, he wants a new deal, according to multiple reports.
The first came from the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain.
Texans didn’t want to re-do Hopkins contract with three years left.
— John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL) March 16, 2020
The Athletic’s Scott Bordow also reported it.
Just was told DeAndre Hopkins does want a new deal. Sticking point: He has no guaranteed money next three years. Will be interesting to see how Cardinals deal with this.
— scott bordow (@sbordow) March 16, 2020
Hopkins has three years remaining on his current deal. It pays him $12.5 million in 2020, $13.5 million in 2021 and more than $13.9 million in 2022. However, none of the money is guaranteed.
The Cardinals could simply put some guarantees in his deal, paying some up front without adding any new money to the deal. That could even reduce his cap hit in 2020.
However, he likely is looking for guaranteed money and new money on top of that.
The Cardinals will have agreed to the trade knowing this information so it will be interesting to see if anything happens in the weeks to come with his contract.

The Houston Texans traded DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals on a whim. The New Orleans Saints would never do that to Michael Thomas.

— Michael Thomas (@Cantguardmike) March 16, 2020
The Arizona Cardinals just pulled off the biggest NFL heist in recent memory when they traded running back David Johnson to the Houston Texans for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Included in the trade is a 2020 second-round pick and 2021 fourth-round pick to the Texans, while the Cardinals will receive a 2020 fourth-round pick. The move — and the lopsided compensation — drew reactions from current Texans players and Hopkins’ former teammate Tyrann Mathieu, as well as his peers across the NFL.
With Hopkins unceremoniously shipped out of town, it might cause Saints fans to take a step back and think about Michael Thomas (the other first-team All-Pro wide receiver on the Associated Press roster), and the possibility of what a trade would have looked like last year if New Orleans moved on from him.
But here is the thing: the Saints would have never done Thomas the way Texans coach Bill O’Brien just betrayed Hopkins. The Saints value their players and consistently make an effort to pay them what they’re worth, even if off-field drama has caused playmakers like Jimmy Graham and Brandin Cooks to be moved.
The Houston Chronicle’s John McClain reported that Hopkins was traded because the Texans were unwilling to give him a pay raise in accordance with his standing among his peers; his $16.2 million annual salary is tied for sixth-best at the position, matched with Cooks and Adam Thielen. As such, they traded him for pennies on the dollar in exchange for an oft-injured running back and a few draft picks. On the flip-side, the Saints made it clear that they would do whatever they needed to do to lock up Thomas on what was the largest contract for a receiver in NFL history.
Finally, when news broke that Hopkins was on his way to Arizona, it seemed almost inevitable that the Cardinals were going to have to give up a first-round pick. After all, Houston is without a first-round pick in this year’s draft. Instead, they will continue about their season sans one of the best receivers in the game and without their best opportunity to replace him with a premium draft selection. Great work all around.

The Cardinals and Texans reportedly pulled off a stunning trade, with DeAndre Hopkins headed to Arizona for running back David Johnson.
The sports world was thrown for a massive loop late last week when the global pandemic known as COVID-19 sent all major sports to a screeching halt.
However, the NFL decided to truck on with free agency as usual, and in the opening hours of the legal tampering period the Arizona Cardinals and the Houston Texans agreed to a stunner of a trade, with Houston sending receiver DeAndre Hopkins and a fourth round pick to Arizona for running back David Johnson, a second round pick and a fourth round pick in 2021.
Cardinals get: WR DeAndre Hopkins and a 4th-round pick.
Texans get: RB David Johnson, a second-round pick and a 2021 fourth-round pick.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 16, 2020
This trade has serious ramifications around the entire NFL, but it’s very clear the immediate impact will be around the NFC West, where Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury and his air raid offense will add one of the best receivers in the NFL to an offense featuring future Hall of Fame receiver Larry Fitzgerald and young quarterback Kyler Murray.
For the Seahawks, finding another lockdown corner to replace Tre Flowers might become even more of a priority now that Arizona will have two elite threats on the outside.
Flowers struggled in his second season last year, and the team may not be able to deal with another year of growing pains in a division filled with elite talent on the outside.
Free agent options could include Desmond Trufant and Byron Jones, or the team could buck tradition and take a cornerback early in the 2020 NFL draft.
