Chiefs trade CB L’Jarius Sneed to Titans

Chiefs trade CB L’Jarius Sneed to Titans for a 2025 3rd round pick and a massive new contract

The Kansas City Chiefs have traded star cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans for a 2025 third-round pick and a seventh-round pick swap in 2024.

Sneed was a popular target of speculation in Detroit Lions land, but the deal ends any further talk of that. Any deal for Sneed was quite unlikely for the Lions. Even though the trade price in draft capital was paltry, it’s the new contract for Sneed that was repellent for GM Brad Holmes and Detroit.

As part of the deal, the Titans and Sneed agreed to a four-year deal worth $76 million, with $55 million guaranteed. It makes Sneed, who had been franchise tagged by the Chiefs, one of the highest-paid corners in the game.

Chiefs send lockdown CB L’Jarius Sneed to Titans for future mid-round pick

L’Jarius Sneed is leaving the AFC West, as Chiefs trade him to the Titans for a 2025 third round pick

L’Jarius Sneed went and had his best season in a contract year and hoped to get a long term deal out of it. But the Chiefs were in a situation where they had to choose between him and All Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones. They chose to invest in Jones, opting to place the franchise tag on Sneed.

Once slapped with the tag, the Chiefs could by time to either work out a deal with him, keep him on a one-year guaranteed salary for this season, or trade him. With the Chiefs in a bit of a cap crung, they have opted for the third option.

They are sending their best cornerback to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a third round pick in 2025.

Now the Chiefs will be without their best cornerback, but be able to get his $20 million salary off the books, potentially allowing them to sign a free agent while also allowing them to sign their upcoming draft class.

Falcons Twitter reacts to latest Justin Fields-to-Atlanta report

#Falcons Twitter reacts to report that team is “finalizing” a trade for Bears QB Justin Fields

The Atlanta Falcons are in the market for a quarterback, which means NFL analysts are connecting the team to basically every QB available in the draft, free agency, or via trade. The most popular name that keeps coming up at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine is Bears quarterback Justin Fields.

Since Chicago is expected to draft USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick, Fields is on the trade block and the Falcons are the betting favorites. A new report from Sportskeeda’s Tony Pauline suggested the Falcons and Bears are “finalizing” a deal for Fields:

Word in Indianapolis is the Chicago Bears are close to finalizing a deal which would send former first-round pick Justin Fields to the Atlanta Falcons It is not known if the deal will be finalized or even announced before the conclusion of the Combine. As I reported on Thursday, if the Falcons can’t come to terms with the Bears for Fields they will turn their attention to Baker Mayfield if he’s available when free agency commences.

Falcons fans have been through the wringer after non-stop QB rumors over the last month. Let’s see how they reacted to the latest Fields-to-Atlanta report on Twitter.

RUMOR: Patriots could deal Mac Jones before 2024 NFL draft

Perhaps Mac Jones needs a change. The New England Patriots could trade him before the 2024 NFL draft.

Former Alabama standout quarterback, national championship winner, Heisman Trophy finalist and first-round pick, Mac Jones, could soon be traded. The New England Patriots have regressed significantly since Tom Brady left. Now, Bill Belichick has walked away from the franchise and a new start is what’s likely needed.

A recent report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero states that Jones is not a part of the future plans for the new coaching staff and they have already turned their attention to acquiring a new starter on draft day.

“The Patriots sit at No. 3 [overall], and all indications are they will seriously consider taking a quarterback there,” Tom Pelissero reports. “In fact, one of the big questions when they were interviewing offensive coordinator candidates was, ‘What is your evaluation of those top quarterbacks?’ They end up hiring Alex Van Pelt, who’s gonna play a major role in developing whoever that young quarterback could be.”

It’s likely that Jones could be on the move before the 2024 NFL draft and would have to fight for a starting job no matter where he ends up. Based on recent performance, there aren’t many job openings available where the incumbent starter isn’t up to Jones’s par.

There will be a lot more information on Jones and other players possibly on the move in the coming weeks as the offseason gets into full swing.

What should Saints ask for in a Vikings-Jameis Winston trade?

Few teams need a QB as badly as the Vikings, and there’s a lot of speculation linking them to Jameis Winston. What should the Saints ask for in a trade?

The NFL trade deadline is just hours away, and the New Orleans Saints may not have a player with more appeal — and availability — to other teams than Jameis Winston. Their backup quarterback is overqualified for that role and deserves an opportunity to start around the league. And a recent season-ending injury to Minnesota Vikings starter Kirk Cousins has led to plenty of speculation as the deadline approaches.

We’ll stoke those fires a little bit. There have not been any credible reports linking the Vikings to trade talks with New Orleans centering on Winston or any other player, but we’ll play along. What should the Saints seek in exchange for Winston’s services?

Minnesota has plenty of draft picks with multiple selections in round four (their own pick and another choice coming from the Detroit Lions), round five (from the Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns), and round six (their own and a pick from the Las Vegas Raiders, through the New England Patriots), so we’ll start there.

Some recent backup quarterback trades have brought in picks in rounds four (Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys this year, Nick Foles to the Chicago Bears in 2020), five (Kyle Allen to the Washington Commanders in 2020) and seven (Case Keenum to the Buffalo Bills in 2022) and a couple of intriguing swaps:

  • Josh Dobbs and a seventh-round pick for a fifth rounder
  • Jarrett Stidham and a seventh-round pick for a sixth rounder
  • Ryan Finley and a seventh-round pick for a sixth rounder
  • Ryan Tannehill and a sixth-round pick for a seventh-round pick and a fourth-round choice in the next year’s draft

We’ve also seen backup passers traded for conditional late-round picks like Nick Mullens (seventh rounder), Baker Mayfield (fifth), as well as Teddy Bridgewater, Joe Flacco and Gardner Minshew (all sixth rounders). But that’s such little compensation that the Saints would do better to just hold onto Winston in case he’s needed in an emergency.

Still, it’s easy to see why Minnesota is a compelling trade partner. Winston’s prorated $647,000 salary for the rest of the season would be very easy to fit under the salary cap, and the Vikings have rallied back from an 0-3 start to their current 4-4 record. They’re not far behind the 6-2 Detroit Lions in a weak NFC North. Winston would be an upgrade over backups Sean Mannion and Jaren Hall.

So what kind of compensation should the Saints seek (in hypothetical trade talks)? Recent deals would suggest a fair deal brings back a fifth- or sixth-round pick at best, though the Saints could maybe squeeze a fourth rounder out of Minnesota by offering to throw in a sixth or seventh rounder of their own. The Saints don’t currently own a fourth-round pick but they’re hoping to get one or two of them when compensatory picks are awarded in March. The way things stand right now they won’t have any draft picks between the second rounder coming back to them from the Denver Broncos and that compensatory fourth rounder, which would fall at the end of the round — putting a gap of as many as 100 picks before they’ll go back on the board.

With that in mind, here’s our trade proposal:

  • Vikings get: Jameis Winston and a 2024 sixth-round pick (projected at No. 193)
  • Saints get: A 2024 fourth-round pick (projected at No. 105)

That isn’t a great return for either side, frankly. And it’s probably more than the Vikings would be willing to pay. It’s why there doesn’t appear to be much momentum brewing for a deal between the two teams. Expect Winston to stay in New Orleans for the rest of the season and test free agency again in the spring.

Falcons acquire DL Kentavius Street in trade with Eagles

The Falcons have traded for Eagles defensive lineman Kentavius Street, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday afternoon

The Atlanta Falcons have traded for Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Kentavius Street, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported late Monday afternoon. The Eagles are sending Street along with a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Falcons in exchange for a 2024 sixth-round pick.

Street, 27, has appeared in 60 games with five starts since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers. After spending three seasons with the 49ers, Street spent one season with the Saints in 2022.

The veteran defender has racked up 75 total tackles, 13 QB hits and 6.5 sacks over the last four and a half seasons. The Falcons just lost starting defensive lineman Grady Jarrett for the year and Street has experience with defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen.

UPDATE: Falcons officially announce trade with Eagles.

Report: Lions were in on the Trey Lance trade talks

The Detroit Lions were reportedly included in the Trey Lance trade talks before the 49ers traded him to the Cowboys

Trey Lance is now a member of the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas swooped in and traded a 2024 fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

The 49ers had lost interest in further developing Lance, whom they traded multiple picks to acquire in the draft less than three years ago. Lance lost the No. 2 QB spot in San Francisco to journeyman Sam Darnold.

Per one report, the Detroit Lions were at least somewhat involved in the trade discussion with the 49ers surrounding Lance. Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported on the Lions level of involvement.

In her post on X (formerly Twitter), Russini mentioned the Lions “showed interest” in Lance, but did not elaborate beyond that. She also noted that the 49ers desired to trade the quarterback to an AFC team and mentioned the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens as other teams that were involved in the trade discussion.

The Lions were strongly rumored to be interested in Lance as a prospect back in the 2021 draft. That was GM Brad Holmes’ first year in Detroit.

5 teams that should try to trade for RB Josh Jacobs

If Josh Jacobs were to be traded by the Raiders, here are five teams that should be making calls to get a deal done.

Josh Jacobs should be preparing for his fifth season in the NFL. His first four seasons were spent with the team that drafted him back in 2019, the Las Vegas Raiders organization.

In 2022, Jacobs had a career season that featured a career-high 1,672 yards, 12 touchdowns and 97.2 yards per game. He is in his prime and is one of the best backs in the NFL.

Being one of the highest-performing players at your position typically comes with a raise in pay, but Jacobs had his fifth-year option declined and was franchise tagged. Now, he’s refusing to participate in training camp with the Raiders and there’s no end in sight.

Should the franchise look to trade him if contract talks continue to move in the wrong direction, here are five teams that should make calls to Las Vegas.

NFC North watch: What happens with the Packers after the Aaron Rodgers trade?

Breaking down what happens to the Packers after the Aaron Rodgers trade and how it impacts the Detroit Lions

The long national nightmare is finally over. The long-rumored trade between the Packers and Jets that sends All-Pro quarterback Aaron Rodgers to New York from Green Bay was announced on Monday. While not yet official, the deal is done.

The reported detail of the major trade

Green Bay receives:

No. 13 overall pick (1st round)
No. 42 overall pick (2nd round)
No. 207 overall pick (6th round)
A conditional 2nd-round pick in 2024 that becomes a 1st-rounder if Rodgers plays 65 percent of the snaps for the Jets in 2023

The Jets receive:

Aaron Rodgers
No. 15 overall pick (1st round)
No. 170 overall pick (5th round)

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

What does all of this mean for Green Bay and, by extension, Detroit?

Jordan Love is the new starting QB for the Packers. Now entering his fourth NFL season, Love has thrown more than five pass attempts in five career games. Green Bay has lost all five, including a Week 18 loss to conclude the 2021 season in Detroit.

The Packers moved up two spots in the first round, which gives them a better opportunity to land a player more of their choosing. Jumping in front of the New England Patriots at No. 14 and dropping the Jets to No. 15 takes away a couple of potential offensive line suitors if that’s what Green Bay GM Brian Gutekunst wants to pick. They also jump to the front of any line for tight ends.

The later picks give the Packers more opportunities to rebuild their depth, which has waned in the last couple of seasons. Green Bay also has two first-round picks in 2024, presuming Rodgers hits the playing time threshold. If he doesn’t, the Jets have made a colossal mistake.

From a Lions perspective, no longer having to face Rodgers is a major relief. Even though Detroit did find some success against him (Rodgers went 18-8 vs. the Lions), Rodgers remained the preeminent opposing QB on the schedule every season. Before safety Kerby Joseph finished off the Rodgers era in Green Bay by picking off his final pass in a Packers uniform to preserve Detroit’s Week 18 win, he’d won eight straight starts against the Lions.

Jets finally swing deal to acquire Aaron Rodgers in trade with Packers

The annual Aaron Rodgers offseason drama concludes with him finally traded to Jets

All offseason we have been hearing talk of where Aaron Rodgers will play next. Or if he will play at all. Early in the offseason, several teams were considered potential landing spots for the former NFL MVP, including the Raiders. But in the end, it was the Jets who became the only team who was still interested in adding the 39-year-old signal caller.

The two sides finalized their deal today, thus ending the long saga of where and whether Aaron Rodgers would be playing in 2023 and beyond.

It’s been the usual offseason adventure regarding Rodgers. This time it even included something called a ‘darkness retreat’ which he used to try help make up his mind about his future. After he emerged from the darkness to everyone in the NFL waiting to hear what kind of enlightenment he discovered. Only for him to leave everyone else in the dark.

The Raiders and several other teams weren’t willing to play his game and moved on to fill their quarterback spot with someone else. The Raiders released Derek Carr, who visited the Jets, but ultimately signed with the New Orleans Saints.

When free agency started the Raiders signed Jimmy Garoppolo to be their next starter, barring a quarterback coming available in the draft.

Only the Jets remained in the mix for Rodgers and it appeared quite some time ago that New York was where he was headed. Now just three days before the start of the 2023 NFL Draft, Rodgers to New York becomes official.
