Eagles-Giants: 15 key players to watch on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field

Tyrod Taylor and Richie James are among 15 key players to watch in the Week 18 matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants

The Eagles (13-3) and Giants (9-6-1) have both clinched a playoff spot, but it’ll Philadelphia in a must-win scenario entering Sunday afternoon.

A win (or a tie) against the New York Giants clinches the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs, home-field advantage, and the lone bye in the NFC during Wild Card Weekend.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll is keeping his personnel strategy close to the vest and we’re unlikely to know if his starters will play until the inactives list is released.

With preparation continuing, here are 15 key players to watch on Sunday.

Eagles-Giants injury reports: Jalen Hurts listed as limited, Josh Sweat among 4 to not practice

The Philadelphia Eagles released their Wednesday injury report ahead of Week 18 against the NY Giants, with Jalen Hurts and Miles Sanders among 3 listed as limited participants

The Eagles released their Wednesday injury report ahead of Sunday’s critical matchup against the Giants, and Pro Bowl quarterback Jalen Hurts participated in a walkthrough.

Miles Sanders was among two others listed as limited, while Lane Johnson (groin), Avonte Maddox (toe), Zech McPhearson (illness), and Josh Sweat (neck) were all non-participants.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Brett Toth, and Robert Quinn all returned to practice after having their 21-day practice windows activated.

Philadelphia will also have other roster moves to make as well, with punter Brett Kern unable to be activated from the practice squad after three prior callups.

Report: Jalen Hurts took first team reps during Eagles walkthrough

The Philadelphia Eagles started preparation for the season finale against the New York Giants on Wednesday and Pro Bowl QB Jalen Hurts took first-team reps and participated fully

The Eagles 2023 team MVP is back, as Jalen Hurts took first-team reps and was a full participant in the team’s Wednesday walkthrough according to The Inquirer’s Jeff McLane.

Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew was sacked six times on the afternoon and went 18-32 passing for 274 yards, one touchdown, and one interception that was returned for a touchdown in the loss to the Saints.

Philadelphia needs a win against the Giants on Sunday to secure the NFC East and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Hurts was close to returning in Week 17 after a two-week designation and the head coach is confident that his Pro Bowl quarterback is trending in the right direction.

Obviously, everything is taken into play as far as when he’s ready to come back. We’re going to want him, first and foremost, we are always going to want him to be healthy enough to not put himself at danger. That’s first and foremost. But then also so he can perform at a high level, as well.

When you’re talking about throwing the football with an injured shoulder, it’s a little different than some other injuries I guess to say. He has to be able to throw the ball down the field. He has to be able to throw it accurately. He has to be able to throw it with velocity so he can be effective as a quarterback.

Hurts amassed 294 yards of total offense and accounted for three touchdowns in the matchup earlier this season against the Giants, a 48-22 win in Week 14.

Eagles vs. Giants: 7 storylines to watch in Week 18

Jalen Hurts’ status is among seven storylines to watch in the Week 18 matchup against the New York Giants

The Eagles and Giants are set for a season finale full of questions, injury concerns, and storylines to watch heading into Sunday.

Philadelphia has a walk-through on Wednesday and the expectation is that Hurts will push to be a part of the gameplan install, while also taking first-team reps ahead of Friday’s final practice.

The team activated the 21-day practice window for C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Robert Quinn, adding more depth to an embattled defense.

With Sunday’s matchup being a must-win contest, here are seven storylines to watch.

Brian Daboll on Giants matchup vs. Eagles: I haven’t thought about resting anyone in Week 18

It’ll be a long week of wondering, but on Monday, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said he’ll do what’s best for his team in regard to the Week 18 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles

Sunday’s season finale has all the making of a physical, NFC East showdown, but that all depends on Brian Daboll wants things to play out.

Philadelphia (13-3) has a better record than the New York Giants (9-6-1), but it’s Daboll’s club that is already slotted as the sixth seed and has nothing to play for besides momentum heading into Wild Card weekend.

While addressing the media on Monday, Daboll made it clear that he’ll do what’s best for his team, while stating that he’ll sort out the playing time for Week 18.

Daboll initially told the media that “you get to rest after the season” before eliminating such a hard-line approach to a huge decision.

“I haven’t. I’m just going to enjoy this one right here — go home and smoke a cigar and hang out with my family,” Daboll said.

If the Giants play their starters, it’ll be about ruining the Eagles’ chances at the top seed, while staying sharp ahead of the postseason matchup against either the 49ers or Vikings.

Giants activate Xavier McKinney from NFI, release David Sills

In an unexpected turnaround, the New York Giants have activated safety Xavier McKinney from NFI and he will play on Sunday versus the Colts.

New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney returned to practice this week, officially opening his 21-day window to return from the non-football injury (NFI) list.

McKinney last played in Week 8 against the Seattle Seahawks before fracturing several fingers on his left hand in an ATV accident during the team’s bye. The injury required surgery and stabilizing pins.

Head coach Brian Daboll said the chances of McKinney playing in a Week 17 game against the Indianapolis Colts were not good, but that outlook changed over the past 48 hours.

On Saturday evening, the Giants activated McKinney from NFI and gave him the green light to play on Sunday.

“Man, I want to get back big time. The coaches know that, and the trainers know that. They know that I really want to get back and I’m kind of running out of patience here,” McKinney said on Thursday.

In order to clear space for McKinney on the 53-man roster, the Giants released wide receiver David Sills. He is likely to return to the practice squad next week.

Additionally, the Giants elevated tight end Chris Myarick and defensive back Zyon Gilbert from the practice squad to the active roster.

Myarick had been waived and re-signed to the reserve unit earlier in the week. That swap allowed the Giants to claim offensive lineman Wyatt Davis off of waivers from the Arizona Cardinals.

Gilbert’s elevation likely means that cornerback Adoree’ Jackson (knee) will be inactive against the Colts. He was previously listed as doubtful to play.
