UFC on ESPN 41: Nate Landwehr vs. David Onama odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 41 odds and lines between Nate Landwehr vs. David Onama, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a featherweight bout on the main card, Nate Landwehr and David Onama meet Saturday at UFC on ESPN 41 at Pechanga Arena in San Diego, Calif. Below, we analyze the UFC on ESPN 41 Landwehr vs. Onama odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The card can be viewed on ESPN/ESPN+ with the prelims starting at 4 p.m. ET and the main card beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

Landwehr has alternated wins and losses across his last 4 fights since making his UFC debut. He had a submission win over Ludovit Klein last time out in mid-October, and he also has a unanimous-decision victory over Darren Elkins to his ledger. He was knocked out in the 1st round in each of his losses by both Julian Erosa and Herbert Burns.

Onama has bounced back with a pair of wins over Garrett Armfield and Gabriel Benitez after losing his UFC debut against Mason Jones in late Oct. 2021. Both of his victories have finished inside the distance.

UFC on ESPN 41 Landwehr vs. Onama picks and predictions

Records: Landwehr (15-4-0) | Onama (10-1-0)

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

Onama (-370) will cost you over three and a half times your potential return, and that’s risky business, even against an inconsistent fighter such as Landwehr.

Onama, the Glory MMA & Fitness fighter hailing from Uganda, has a 2-inch reach advantage and holds a 1.09-to-0.54 takedown average. However, when he gets the victory, I am expecting it to come via knockout as Landwehr has been very susceptible to those. ONAMA BY TKO/KO (+110) is a much better play at plus money.

Over/Under (O/U)

Landwehr’s 2 losses at the UFC level have not only been via knockout but he has been dropped in the 1st round in each of the outings. As such, take a flier on UNDER 1.5 ROUNDS (+115) at plus money.

The UFC is in Southern California this week with a key bantamweight fight atop the card.

UFC on ESPN 41 takes place Saturday at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former bantamweight champion [autotag]Dominick Cruz[/autotag] (24-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) takes on [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] (21-7-1 MMA, 13-6 UFC). Vera is a sizable -250 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Cruz is +190. But it’s not a blowout with our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers, who are siding with Vera at a 7-4 clip.

In the co-main event, [autotag]Nate Landwehr[/autotag] (15-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) meets [autotag]David Onama[/autotag] (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at featherweight. Onama is the biggest favorite on the main card at -320, and he’s a near-unanimous pick from our staff members at 10-1.

The only unanimous pick on the main card is [autotag]Yazmin Jauregui[/autotag] (8-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) in her promotional debut against fellow debtante [autotag]Iasmin Lucindo[/autotag] (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC). Jauregui is more than a 2-1 favorite in the women’s strawweight bout and has an 11-0 shutout in the picks.

The closest fight from a betting perspective is between [autotag]Devin Clark[/autotag] (13-6 MMA, 7-6 UFC) and [autotag]Azamat Murzakanov[/autotag] (11-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at light heavyweight. Murzakanov is just a -155 favorite, but he’s a near-unanimous pick at 10-1.

Another near-unanimous choice is [autotag]Ariane Lipski[/autotag] (14-7 MMA, 3-4 UFC) in her women’s flyweight bout against [autotag]Priscila Cachoeira[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 3-4 UFC). Lipski is a -210 favorite and has a 10-1 blowout in the picks.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Gerald Meerschaert[/autotag] (34-15 MMA, 9-7 UFC) is a heavy underdog at middleweight against [autotag]Bruno Silva[/autotag] (22-7 MMA, 3-1 UFC), who is a 3-1 favorite and has a 10-1 near shutout from our staff members.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Vera (58 percent), Onama (77 percent), Jauregui (84 percent), Murzakanov (79 percent), Lipski (74 percent) and Silva (76 percent) are the choices.

Nate Landwehr: David Onama good, but ‘I’m going to smash his face in’

Nate Landwehr aims to run right through David Onama in their co-main event at UFC on ESPN 41 in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO – [autotag]Nate Landwehr[/autotag] aims to run right through [autotag]David Onama[/autotag].

Landwehr (15-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) faces Onama (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 41 co-main event at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Onama boasts a 100 percent finishing rate, but Landwehr is confident that he takes him out.

“He’s good,” Landwehr said Wednesday at UFC on ESPN 41 media day. “He’s big, he’s tall, he’s young, he’s fast – I feel like I’m going to smash his face in. We’re going to see real quick. We’ve got five minutes to start off. We’ll see if we make it to the second five minutes. We’ll see if we make it to the third five minutes.”

Onama will compete in front of a crowd for the first time in his UFC tenure, as well as in a big co-headliner spot, but Landwehr expects him to bring the fight regardless.

“I don’t think there’s an edge,” Landwehr said. “I think the first time I ever did something cool, it felt natural, too. So it’s like you’ve either got it or you don’t. We’re going to see if he has it. He probably has it, and going to be a fist fight.”

David Onama sees big edge on Nate Landwehr at UFC on ESPN 41: ‘I’m just better than him’

David Onama thinks he’s going to give Nate Landwehr some serious problems in the octagon at UFC on ESPN 41.

SAN DIEGO – [autotag]David Onama[/autotag] thinks he’s going to give Nate Landwehr some serious problems in the octagon at UFC on ESPN 41.

Onama (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is set to meet Landwehr (15-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) in the featherweight co-main event of Saturday’s card, which takes place at Pechanga Arena and airs on ESPN/streams on ESPN+.

According to Onama, the matchup has been on his radar for a very long time. It was originally supposed to happen in March, and at this point he thinks he’s got Landwehr perfectly scouted.

“I feel like I’m better than this guy everywhere,” Onama told MMA Junkie and other reporters at UFC on ESPN 41 media day. “I’m better rounded, I’m just better than him. It’s going to be a tough fight for him. I’m going to be one of his better opponents.”

Despite Onama having just three fights in the UFC, and four for Landwehr, respectively, the UFC chose the matchup to serve as the co-headlining spot. Onama said that position on the card filled him with added motivation, and he intends to deliver a performance that will show he should be there many times more in the future.

“Being the co-main event is very exciting for me,” Onama said. “It’s my first co-main event in the UFC. The UFC, they know what they’re doing. I’m a very exciting fighter. I bring fireworks. That’s why I’m the co-main event. They know what I bring.

The UFC makes its return to San Diego for the first time in more than seven years on Saturday with UFC on ESPN 41, which takes place at Pechanga Arena and airs on ESPN/streams on ESPN+.

A massive bantamweight fight serves as the main event of the card. [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] (19-7-1 MMA, 13-6 UFC), who has won nine of his past 11 fights, will look to continue his climb up the divisional pecking order when he meets former UFC/WEC champion [autotag]Dominick Cruz[/autotag] (24-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC).

UFC on ESPN 39 post-event facts: Ricky Turcios’ rough striking numbers enter record books

Ricky Turcios landed just 11.5 percent of his strike attempts at UFC on ESPN 39, putting him in the record books for the wrong reasons.

After International Fight Week took over the MMA world, UFC on ESPN 39 on Saturday proved to be something of a hangover card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

[autotag]Rafael Fiziev[/autotag] (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) put a highlight on the end of a long night of fights, though, when he scored a fifth-round knockout of former UFC champ [autotag]Rafael dos Anjos[/autotag] (32-14 MMA, 20-12 UFC) to extend his winning streak in the lightweight division to six consecutive fights.

UFC on ESPN 39 video: David Onama sleeps Garrett Armfield with slick arm triangle submission

Watch David Onama notch his second UFC win at UFC on ESPN 39.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]David Onama[/autotag] made a statement in his return to the octagon.

The UFC featherweight put to sleep his opponent [autotag]Garrett Armfield[/autotag] in the preliminary card of Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 39, which took place at the UFC Apex. Onama (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) submitted Armfield (8-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) with an arm triangle choke at the 3:13 mark of Round 2.

The submission came following a very competitive opening round, where Armfield wobbled Onama with a hard punch. However, the grappling strength of Onama prevailed as he slapped on a deep submission to put his opponent to sleep.

Below you can watch Onama’s finish (via Twitter):

[lawrence-related id=2560914]

This victory marks Onama’s second consecutive win in the UFC after having lost his promotional debut in a lightweight bout against Mason Jones. The loss in his debut is his only career defeat. Onama was coming off KO win over Mexico’s Gabriel Benitez, in which he won a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus.

David Onama awaits new UFC on ESPN 39 opponent after Austin Lingo withdraws

UFC on ESPN 39 is down a man as David Onama awaits a potential short-notice replacement to step in for Austin Lingo.

UFC on ESPN 39 is down a man.

[autotag]Austin Lingo[/autotag] has withdrawn from his bout against [autotag]David Onama[/autotag], which was scheduled for Saturday’s card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Two people with knowledge of the lineup change informed MMA Junkie of the withdrawal but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an announcement.

The promotion currently is seeking a short-notice replacement to fight Onama (9-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC). It is unclear why Lingo (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) withdrew from the bout.

Onama, 28, has gathered a lot of attention despite his split two-fight stint in the UFC thus far. After he lost a thrilling, short-notice battle against Mason Jones, he violently knocked out Gabriel Benitez to notch his first UFC win.

The withdrawal marks the second straight booking Lingo has pulled out of.

With Lerone Murphy out, David Onama targeted vs. Nate Landwehr for UFC Columbus

Five weeks after his first UFC win, David Onama will seek another big knockout.

[autotag]David Onama[/autotag] is fresh off the biggest win of his career and he’s looking to strike while the iron is hot.

Stepping in on short notice, Onama (9-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) will replace [autotag]Lerone Murphy[/autotag] when he battles [autotag]Nate Landwehr[/autotag] (15-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) at UFC on ESPN 33, pending bout finalization.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup verbal agreements are in place but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Onama’s management Iridium Sports Agency first announced the news. It is unclear why Murphy is no longer in the bout.

UFC on ESPN 33 takes place March 26 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The main card airs on ESPN after prelims on ESPN/ESPN+.

The first Ugandan fighter in UFC history, Onama has split his UFC appearances. After a thrilling, back-and-forth debut against Mason Jones, which he lost via unanimous decision, Onama ran through Gabriel Benitez at UFC Fight Night 201. Five weeks later, he’ll step back into the cage.

Landwehr is a former M-1 Global champion, who has had ups and downs thus far in his four-fight UFC tenure. He’s alternated losses and wins thus far in the promotion, with his most recent fight a submission against Ludovit Klein.

With the change, the UFC on ESPN 33 lineup includes:

  • Curtis Blaydes vs. Chris Daukaus
  • Max Griffin vs. Neil Magny

UFC Fight Night 201 video: David Onama rallies for violent face-plant KO of Gabriel Benitez

David Onama’s power was a game changer against Gabriel Benitez at UFC Fight Night 201.

[autotag]David Onama[/autotag]’s power was a game changer against [autotag]Gabriel Benitez[/autotag] at UFC Fight Night 201.

Onama (9-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) struggled to start the fight, which was contested at a catchweight because Benitez (22-10 MMA, 6-6 UFC) came in heavy at weigh-ins. He took some hard punches and had to battle through a blow to the eye, but when he turned the tables, he turned them hard.

After Onama caught and staggered Benitez with a clean shot, he followed up with a roughly 10-strike combination that sent his opponent crashing to the canvas face first at the 4:24 mark of Round 1.

Check out the replay of the highlight-reel finish below (via Twitter):

A jubilant Onama called for a Performance of the Night bonus after his win, which was his first inside the octagon after losing his UFC debut this past October.

“That’s what I do,” Onama said in his post-fight interview with Paul Felder. “That’s what I’m here for: just show out and have fun.”
