David Njoku rescinds his trade request from the Browns

The trade request earlier this summer came almost immediately after Njoku changed representation to Drew Rosenhaus

Browns tight end David Njoku has backed away from his request for the team to trade him prior to the 2020 NFL season.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, Njoku and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, have rescinded their request with the Browns. Rapoport cites the positive talks between Njoku and new GM Andrew Berry and others on the team as the reason Rosenhaus, who was attributed by Rapoport, and Njoku have changed course.

The trade request earlier this summer came almost immediately after Njoku changed representation to Rosenhaus. Prior to that, Njoku was “ready to roll” under new head coach Kevin Stefanski in the Browns base two-TE offense. Stefanski also publicly praised the opportunity for Njoku to thrive in 2020 in Cleveland.

Njoku tweeted out his own commitment to being the best he can be in Cleveland.

The young TE still has two years remaining on his rookie contract. The Browns picked up the fifth-year option on his contract earlier this offseason.

David Njoku: ‘I love the city of Cleveland with all my heart’

Njoku wants Cleveland fans to know his trade request is not personal

David Njoku might want to get traded away from the Cleveland Browns, but the young tight end wants everyone to know it’s not personal.

In a Twitter post on Monday, Njoku offered up unsolicited love for the city of Cleveland and all it’s done for him in his three seasons with the Browns, Njoku explains his desire to get traded by stating, “This game is filled with a lot of complications”, before again reiterating his love and appreciation for Cleveland.

Njoku requested a trade earlier this summer almost immediately after changing representation to Drew Rosenhaus as his agent. Njoku has two seasons left on his rookie contract. The Browns have already exercised their fifth-year option, locking him up through the 2021 NFL season.

PODCAST: Should the Bills make a summer trade?

Kyle Silagyi is joined by Justin DiLoro and McKenna Middlebrook to discuss whether the Bills should pursue Raheem Mostert or David Njoku.

Two of the NFL’s (semi) prominent players may be on the move, as San Francisco 49ers’ running back Raheem Mostert and Cleveland Browns’ tight end David Njoku requested trades from their respective teams last week.

Though the Buffalo Bills are quite deep at running back and have talent at tight end, should the team inquire about either available player? On this episode of The Kyle Silagyi Variety Hour, host Kyle Silagyi is joined by BillsWire staff writers Justin DiLoro and McKenna Middlebrook to discuss whether or not the Bills should pursue either Mostert or David Njoku.

ESPN ranks the Browns offensive weapons 2nd-best in the NFL in 2020

It’s up from 3rd in 2019

Count ESPN’s Bill Barnwell among those who believe the Cleveland Browns have the potential to score a lot of points with one of the most dynamic collections of offensive talent in the league. Barnwell ranked the Browns second among the NFL’s 32 teams in terms of offensive weaponry in his latest ratings.

The ranking involves only the wide receivers, tight ends and running backs. No quarterbacks or line play. And it’s geared for just 2020, not looking back at 2019 or earlier.

Just listing out the names of the players who will handle the pigskin, it’s easy to see why Barnwell is bullish.

  • Nick Chubb
  • Kareem Hunt
  • Odell Beckham Jr.
  • Jarvis Landry
  • Austin Hooper
  • David Njoku

It’s a lineup brimming with speed, skill and youthful talent. Only the Super Bowl champion Chiefs rank higher.

It is important to remember that what looks great on paper doesn’t always translate to the field. The Browns ranked 3rd in this list a year ago but sputtered to a 6-10 finish.

Jamal Adams is not the only player currently seeking a trade

The Jets All-Pro safety is among four players who are looking to be dealt from their current team.

Jamal Adams has been the most vocal player in search of a trade this offseason, but the Jets safety isn’t alone.

Elsewhere in the league, San Francisco 49ers RB Raheem Mostert, Jaguars DE Yannick Ngakoue and Browns TE David Njoku also want out of their respective situations. As ESPN’s Field Yates noted, trade for Mostert, Adams and Ngakoue will likely come with a contract extension. Njoku is presumably looking for a change of scenery after Cleveland brought in fellow tight end Austin Hooper.

Let’s take a closer look at the four players currently seeking a trade and where their situations stand.

Jamal Adams has made his demands unhappiness with the Jets known through social media.

Despite Joe Douglas expressing that the team would like to make the All-Pro safety a “Jet for life,” there has been no progress on a contract extension for Adams. With the two sides hitting a stalemate, Adams chose the only leverage option he had left — requesting a trade. Adams made a trade destination wish list, which includes eight teams, but the Jets have no plans on giving in to his demands.

With two years of team control left, New York has no reason to trade Adams. Right now, it’s more likely than not that he’ll remain with Gang Green unless Douglas is given an offer he can’t refuse.

Should Bills explore trade for Browns TE David Njoku?

Should the Buffalo Bills consider trading for Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku?

There’s still some prominent names out on the free agent and trade markets in the NFL that the Buffalo Bills could consider. Most of them such as Jadeveon Clowney or Jamal Adams seemed very unlikely and not close the the Bills’ radar. Until now.

Over the weekend, Browns tight end David Njoku tossed his name into the “available targets” ring in the NFL. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Njoku requested a trade from the Browns. Could the Bills be a suitor? There’s multiple layers to consider.

The No. 1 name that comes to mind during such a discussion is your incumbent. That guy for the Bills was tight end Dawson Knox. As a rookie in 2019, Knox’s up-and-down season is widely noted. He looked good on his 28 catches for 388 yards and two touchdowns but those 10 recorded dropped passes which led the league for tight ends… wasn’t very pretty.

Could the Bills fit both Njoku and Knox? In some senses, yes. In others, probably not.

First off would be the finances in this situation. Njoku has two seasons left on his rookie deal. As a former first-round pick, he had a fifth-year option on his contract which the Browns already flexed. In 2020, his cap hit would be just north of $3 million. In 2021, that just about doubles at near $6 million. According to Spotrac, the Bills do have room to fit that contract with $31.5 million in cap space. A decent chunk, but still only the 26th most in the league.

Cutting that down to around $26 million, the Bills would still need to fit in future contract extensions. Namely linebacker Matt Milano and offensive lineman Dion Dawkins. Those contracts are two Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane would certainly like to hand out sooner rather than later.

How costly are they? Well, that $6 million could help, but maybe all three in 2021 are do-able? Also factoring in would be trade compensation, naturally. Njoku has flashed early in his career, but did suffer a broken wrist last season, holding him to only four games. In 2018, the 23-year-old did have a solid year for the Browns with 56 catches for 639 yards and four touchdowns. He has potential dynamic-playmaking talent.

But the two big reasons against Njoku that really override a lot here.

First, bringing in Njoku would have to stunt Knox’s growth in his second season. And even if the Bills planned to still get Knox his targets with Njoku on the roster, that’s likely something Njoku would be against. The reasoning for Njoku likely wanting to leave the Browns is their additions at the position this offseason, namely Austin Hooper. The Browns gave Hooper the largest tight end contract ever. Njoku appears to be having none of that partnership. Not exactly some signs of a team player, either.

In addition to Njoku unlikely to want to lose targets to Knox, let’s consider the Bills offense. According to Sharp Football, the Bills used a ton of 11 personnel after offensive coordinator Brian Daboll moved from the sideline to the coaches booth. In that time frame, Buffalo used 11 personnel on 81 percent of packages which led the NFL. For novices, 11 personnel means only one tight end on the field, not two, AKA, not Njoku and Knox together.

Also factoring into this lack of looks for Njoku with the Bills has to be the wide receivers. Buffalo has a solid 1-2-3 unit with Stefon Diggs, John Brown and Cole Beasley.

Even if the compensation is low and the finances are there, it might not make enough sense for the Bills to pull off such a move. Browns Wire estimates potentially a fifth-round pick for Njoku, so essentially nothing. But it’s not looking like there’s a world where Njoku and the Bills makes much sense.

Would trading for David Njoku make sense for Jags?

About a week ago, ESPN’s Field Yates proposed a trade involving defensive end Yannick Ngakoue and David Njoku of the Cleveland Browns. In a nutshell, the two teams exchanged both players while the Browns added in a second-round selection, and …

About a week ago, ESPN’s Field Yates proposed a trade involving defensive end Yannick Ngakoue and David Njoku of the Cleveland Browns. In a nutshell, the two teams exchanged both players while the Browns added in a second-round selection, and surprisingly, it got a lot of good feedback from Jags fans.

Now, here we are not too far removed from the article and it appears Yates was on to something. Njoku recently demanded a trade two days ago, leaving fans to speculate what teams are fits for the young tight end.

For the sake of this article, we’ll leave Ngakoue out of the picture and just look at it from a standpoint of the Jags acquiring Njoku by providing draft compensation and not players. However, to answer the question of whether the Jags should trade for him we have to look at the Jags’ current tight end group.

The organization came into the offseason with a need for a tight end after three of their tight ends went on injured reserve last season. Those players were Geoff Swaim (concussion/ ankle), Josh Oliver (back), and James O’Shaughnessy (ACL), leaving the Jags’ offense at a huge disadvantage when it came to pass-catchers. Now, two of those three will be back in O’Shaughnessy and Oliver (while Swaim was cut) in addition to another notable in veteran tight end Tyler Eifert, who is the most familiar with the offensive system.

When looking at those three names there should be concerns on the Jags part. O’Shaugnessy, a favorite target of Gardner Minshew II, will be coming off an ACL tear, which means 2020 may not be a super productive year for him. Fans aren’t exactly high on the health of Eifert either, as he’s missed over 50 regular season games in his career. As for Oliver, he only registered three catches last season and will be learning a new scheme. That ultimately makes him feel like a rookie who is still at Square 1.

Still, the team is seemingly high on what they have and I believe Oliver especially could prevent them from wanting Njoku. They were high enough on him to take him with a third-round selection in 2019, and after how last season went, they are going to want to see what they have in him. In a nutshell, it feels as though Oliver is the team’s version of Njoku — at least they’re hoping.

For me, Njoku is a talented player when healthy and could be a TE1 in time and the Jags should at least be open to it. However, when looking at it from their standpoint with Oliver and them showing confidence in Eifert by not drafting a tight end, it looks like their minds are set at the position.

Additionally, if the Jags looked into a trade for Njoku the asking price would have to be extremely friendly. If a fifth-round selection or less is all they have to give up, that’s worth the risk even though it’s unlikely that they would.

Now, we’d like to know what you all at home think about a Njoku trade. Does it make sense for the Jags? Let us know in the poll below.
