Browns bring in Kenyan Drake, Benny Snell, 4 others in for tryouts

The Browns had 6 in for tryouts on Friday.

The Cleveland Browns are now just over 24 hours away from their Week 8 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks. However, due to injuries in the running back room, we have seen them add three ball carriers to their practice squad this week. One of those running backs was the familiar face of John Kelly Jr. He was one of six players in for a tryout today with the Browns, joined by other running backs Kenyan Drake and Benny Snell.

Kelly Jr. has been on the practice squad for the past two seasons and was with the team during training camp this summer as well. They also brought back Nate McCrary and Jordan Wilkins to the practice squad as well, two other players who were on the training camp roster.

Here is the full list of players, six in total, that the Browns had in for a tryout on Friday. Again, this is something they do weekly as players begin to exhaust their three call-ups from the practice squad, and as injuries always have to be compensated for.

Cardinals sign LB David Anenih

The Cardinals added a former Titans linebacker and released a cornerback ahead of Saturday’s practice.

The Arizona Cardinals announced an addition to the team ahead of their “Back to Football” Saturday practice in training camp at State Farm Stadium. They signed linebacker David Anenih.

Anenih has not yet played an NFL game, spending time on the rosters of the Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons.

He signed with Tennessee last year as an undrafted rookie out of Houston.

He spent the season on the practice squads of the Steelers and Titans.

He will turn 24 years old in August.

He is 6-foot-2 and 245 pounds.

While playing for Houston collegiately, he played five seasons at Houston and had 99 total tackles (57 solo), 32 tackles for loss, 20.0 sacks, seven pass breakups and four forced fumbles in 56 games.

To make room for Anenih on the roster, the Cardinals released cornerback Dylan Mabin.

Steelers signing ex-Titans OLB David Anenih to active roster

The Steelers are signing Anenih in the wake of T.J. Watt’s injury.

Outside linebacker David Anenih terminated his practice squad contract with the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday, per the league’s transactions wire, and will reportedly sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, Anenih will be signed to the Steelers’ 53-man roster. Pittsburgh is also expected to place star pass-rusher T.J. Watt on injured reserve after he suffered a torn pec in Week 1.

Signed as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL draft, Anenih was a standout for Tennessee during training camp and the preseason. He notched three sacks and batted down two passes in three exhibition contests.

However, Anenih was one of the more surprising 53-man roster cuts. He was kept on the practice squad, and while it was figured he’d get a promotion in the wake of Harold Landry’s season-ending injury, that did not happen.

Now, Anenih will get a fresh start in Pittsburgh, where he’ll look to carve out a role for himself on a very talented defense.

Titans’ David Anenih talks standout performance in preseason Week 1

Titans UDFA David Anenih was arguably the biggest standout on defense in preseason Week 1.

While it wasn’t a great night for the Tennessee Titans’ defense overall, 2022 undrafted free agent and outside linebacker David Anenih shined in the preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night.

The Houston product notched two of Tennessee’s three sacks on the evening in back-to-back plays, and one of them led to a fumble and turnover. He also added four tackles in total.

Anenih touched on his strip sack, which came on a third-and-12 play late in the fourth quarter, and after his first sack of the game.

“That’s a pass-rusher’s dream, third-and-12, get the opportunity to go out there and rush the passer, get a sack,” Anenih said, per ESPN’s Turron Davenport. “The opportunity presented itself, so I think I just went out there and made the most of it.”

One of the biggest adjustments Anenih has had to make since signing in the pros is dropping into coverage more. The rookie says he’s more comfortable rushing the passer, but believes he’s making progress in the other area.

“[Rushing the passer is] a very natural thing for me since I started playing football my junior year of high school. It’s been very natural for me to just get off the ball, turn the corner,” Anenih said. “When I first got here in May, it was a transition for me because it was a lot more dropping in coverage and stuff like that. But with the help of coach [Ryan] Crow, coach [Mike] Vrabel, coach Shane [Bowen], they’ve helped me a lot to really be a lot more fluid with the defense and how we do things on defense.”

After Thursday night, Anenih, who was facing an uphill climb in making the roster upon arriving in Nashville, is squarely on the map as a candidate to grab one of the last spots on Tennessee’s 53-man roster later this month.

Rams 2022 Draft Prospect Profile: David Anenih (Edge, Houston)

Drafting an edge rusher seems like a probable outcome for the Rams and David Anenih out of Houston could be a solid Day 3 option.

All signs are pointing toward the Los Angeles Rams selecting an edge defender in the 2022 NFL draft at some point. Following a special stretch of performances in the postseason, Von Miller elected to leave the Rams in favor of the Buffalo Bills in free agency.

With Miller now residing in Buffalo, Los Angeles’ edge rusher room features Leonard Floyd, Justin Hollins, Chris Garrett, and Terrell Lewis. Aside from Floyd, none of the other guys have consistently shown they can be full-time starters in the NFL.

While signing a veteran edge rusher is still a possibility for the Rams, drafting someone like David Anenih in the later rounds of the 2022 NFL draft could be in the cards for them as well.

Cardinals met virtually with Houston pass rusher David Anenih

Anenih is a long-armed, athletic edge defender who could be targeted on Day 3 of the draft.

The NFL draft is less than two weeks away and we continue to get reports of the players the Arizona Cardinals have made contact with. The latest is Houston edge defender David Anenih.

According to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, Anenih had virtual meetings with the Cardinals and two other teams.

Anenih played five seasons for Houston, taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility he got because of the pandemic. In 2021, he had 30 tackles, five sacks and 10.0 tackles for loss.

He is 6-2 and 245 lbs with long 34 3/8-inch arms. At his pro day, he posted a 4.74-second 40 time, 25 reps 225 lbs on the bench press, a 36.5-inch vertical leap and a 123-inch broad jump.

He is a player the Cardinals might like with one of their five selections in the final two rounds of the draft or he could be a potential undrafted free agent they target.

He didn’t have great production as a pass rusher, but his length and athleticism could make him an intriguing developmental player with upside on special teams.

Houston Cougars pro day offered the Lions a close look at several defensive prospects

The Lions, including Don Muhlbach, were on hand to check out Logan Hall, David Anenih and more

The Houston Cougars had a very impressive 2021 season. Coach Dana Holgersen’s Cougars finished 12-2, including a bowl win over Auburn. They did so thanks to several budding NFL draft prospects.

The Detroit Lions checked out those draft prospects at Houston’s pro day recently. Longtime long snapper turned special assistant Don Muhlbach and area scout Patrick Mularkey were on hand for the workouts. They got to see a few draft-worthy defensive prospects.

Logan Hall, EDGE – Hall emerged as a Day 2 prospect with a strong 2021, notching 6.5 sacks and 13.5 TFLs while playing tackle. At 6-foot-6 and 285 pounds, he’s got the length and strength to fill the strongside DE role in coordinator Aaron Glenn’s new-look defense in Detroit. But Hall can also play inside and create problems for blockers in the run game. He’s fast off the snap and plays with violent hands and a kneecap-biting motor and intensity.

David Anenih, EDGE – Anenih is a long-limbed outside backer who tested very well (37.5″ vert, 4.66 40-yard dash at 254 pounds) and it shows on the field. He’s more of a 3-4 OLB than a fit for the Lions’ new 4-man front scheme, though Anenih’s style and physique closely compare with current Detroit defender Julian Okwara, though he’s more of an off-ball talent than Okwara. He’s generally projected as a Day 3 prospect

Deontay Anderson, S – A hybrid safety/linebacker, Anderson is a great athlete at 6-1 and 218 pounds. Anderson transferred from Ole Miss and didn’t have a great deal of production for the Cougars (28 tackles, 4 TFLs as a senior). He’s got some impressive athletic potential but is overaged (already 24) and doesn’t really have an easy NFL positional projection at his “tweener” size.

Marcus Jones, CB – Jones didn’t work out as he recovers from shoulder surgery. Just 5-foot-8, he projects as a Day 3 slot corner and return specialist. Houston used him on offense and returns aside from his five INTs and sticky coverage skills.

Damarion Williams, CB – Williams is a scheme-versatile JUCO transfer who can play as a slot corner or a third safety. He’s got ball skills and tackles in space well. Williams is a Day 3 or priority free agent prospect.

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 58 David Anenih

Houston edge rusher David Anenih is up next in Unpacking Future Packers, a countdown previewing the 2022 draft for Packers Wire.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Rashan Gary may not recognize many faces in the first outside linebacker position group meetings this season. The budding superstar will have a new position coach and he may have a cast of new teammates.

With the Green Bay Packers pushed up against the salary cap, they may be forced to move on from Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith.

That’s the bad news. The good news for the Packers is that the 2022 NFL Draft is loaded with talented edge rushers. It will give Brian Gutekunst an opportunity to quickly reload at a premium position.

A player that Gutekunst could target on day three of the upcoming NFL Draft is David Anenih. The Houston edge rusher checks in at No. 58 in the Unpacking Future Packers countdown.

Anenih came to Houston as a three-star recruit. During his first two seasons at Houston, he recorded 8.5 tackles for loss and six sacks.

In 2019, during his first year as a starter Anenih recorded seven tackles for loss and five sacks. The following season Anenih recorded 6.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.

This past season, Anenih was a driving force behind Houston having one of the top defensive lines in the country. He recorded 9.5 tackles for loss and four sacks.

“The Houston Cougars finished their 2021 campaign with a remarkable 12-2 record, a conference championship appearance, a Birmingham Bowl victory over Auburn, and a final ranking of No. 17. While the Cougars were a well-balanced team, if I had to attribute the success to one position unit, it’s the defensive line that was colloquially known as “Sack Ave.”,” Steve Helwick, a contributor for Underdog Dynasty, said. “David Anenih was one of the key cogs of that unit, which ranked fifth in the FBS in total sacks and ninth in tackles for loss.

Anenih served as a three-year starter, but his 2021 campaign was his strongest yet as he recorded career-highs in sacks and tackles for loss. With Anenih as one of the focal points of a dominant pass rush, Houston won the trenches in nearly every contest and that advantage was well documented in the win column.”

The first thing that stands out about Anenih’s game is his explosiveness off the edge. He has good quickness and gets upfield quickly with his initial burst. The three-year starter runs the arc with good quickness.

“Anenih’s greatest attribute is his speed around the edge and his ability to time jumps immediately following the snap,” Helwick said. “Due to the rapidness of his successful rushes, there are several instances per game where an opposing quarterback has insufficient time to make a read. This was prevalent in the Birmingham Bowl against Auburn, when Anenih recorded one sack, two tackles for loss, and forced a slew of incompletions with his pressure. Thanks to Anenih’s quick arrivals to the backfield, pressure, and coverage mingled well at Houston, which explains why the Cougars held opponents to the eighth lowest completion rate in the nation at 55.2 percent.”

Anenih is a bendy edge rusher with good flexibility to get and stay underneath blocks. He converts speed to power and keeps offensive tackles off balance.

“He takes sharp angles often when charging to the quarterback but maintains his balance quite well, especially through contact,” Helwick said. “Combined with his explosiveness off the line, this “bend” allows him to breeze past tackles, despite his size disadvantage for a defensive lineman. Upon reaching the quarterback, Anenih rarely misses sacks. He uses his entire frame to pounce on quarterbacks and wrestle them down in a fashion which prevents shoestring escapes or last-second dump-offs.”

As a run defender, Anenih is strong at the point of attack. He does a good job of using his length and hands to keep himself free. The former three-star recruit has good quickness and range to make plays against the run.

Anenih looks comfortable on his feet to drop into coverage and spy, or cover the flats.

“Anenih works his arms well against opposing blockers, which made him a potent run stopper at Houston,” Helwick said. “The Cougars fittingly ranked 10th in the FBS in stopping the run by allowing just 108.2 yards per game, and many of those stops transpired at the line of scrimmage. Houston occasionally utilized him as a spy, as well. With his sideline-to-sideline speed and ability to read quarterbacks’ eyes, I thought the role of countering scrambling quarterbacks was a solid fit for him that could translate to the next level.”

Fit with the Packers

A team can never have enough quality edge rushers. If the Packers are able to rework Preston Smith’s contract, they still need to improve the depth at the position.

With his blend of quickness and length, Anenih would be a solid depth piece as a rookie. Long-term, Anenih has all the tools in the shed to develop into a starting edge rusher and possibly replace Preston Smith as Gary’s running mate.

“With his explosiveness and speed around the edge, Anenih complements bull rushers very well,” Helwick said. “At Houston he played alongside defensive tackle Logan Hall, who is a projected day two pick, and their skill-sets meshed together immaculately. If I’m looking to add speed to an already-powerful pass rush – specifically in a 3-4 defense – Anenih would be a worthy outside linebacker to take a chance on.”
