KJ Jefferson named to preseason Davey O’Brien Award Watch List

KJ Jefferson continues to earn preseason recognition, this time being named to the Davey O’Brien Award’s watch list.

Arkansas quarterback [autotag]KJ Jefferson[/autotag] was one of 35 of college football’s best signal-callers to be named to the official preseason watch list for the Davey O’Brien Award. Each year, the award is presented to the nation’s best college quarterback and is the oldest national quarterback award.

Jefferson is coming off another impressive season in Fayetteville where he threw for 2,648 yards and 24 touchdowns while also rushing for 640 yards and nine touchdowns. He is the first Arkansas quarterback to earn preseason All-SEC honors since Tyler Wilson in 2012.

The senior from Sardis, Miss. is set to break a lot of program records in 2023, which will be his third season running the Razorback offense. Currently, Jefferson sits in the top 10 in program history for completions (7th), yards (7th), touchdown passes (6th), total plays (6th), total yards (5th), touchdowns responsible for (4th) and 300-yard passing games (3rd).

Jefferson will lead the Razorbacks offense when they kick off the season on Sept. 2 against Western Carolina at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.

Jayden Daniels named to Davey O’Brien Award watch list

Jayden Daniels enters his final college season with a lot of expectations.

[autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] is expected to have a big year in his fifth and final season of college football this fall, and the LSU quarterback has now been named to the preseason watch list for the Davey O’Brien Award.

The Davey O’Brien Award is given annually to the top signal-caller in college football. Daniels looks to become the second LSU quarterback to win the award after [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] did so in 2019.

Daniels had a huge bounce-back season in 2022 as a transfer from Arizona State. He led LSU to a 10-win season, starting every game. He threw 17 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions and had the most prolific rushing season for a quarterback in Tigers history.

The preseason All-SEC selection enters the year with high expectations as he was also named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, which is given to the top player in college football.

Sean Clifford named to Davey O’Brien Award watch list

Sean Clifford is added to another watch list as watch list season unfolds

Another day of watch list season included another watch list to include Penn State quarterback [autotag]Sean Clifford[/autotag]. Clifford was included on the watch list for the Davey O’Brien Award on Tuesday.

The Davey O’Brien Award is presented annually to the nation’s top quarterback as determined by the Davey O’Brien Foundation.

Clifford is looking to become just the third quarterback in school history to receive the award. Past Penn State winners of the Davey O’Brien Award include [autotag]Todd Blackledge[/autotag] in 1982 and [autotag]Kerry Collins[/autotag] in 1994. Blackledge was the second recipient of the Davey O’Brien Award since the award shifted to a focus solely on quarterbacks in 1981 (BYU’s Jim McMahon won the first award after the change).

Previous winners of the Davey O’Brien Award include Steve Young, Doug Flutie, Vinny Testaverde, Troy Aikman, Peyton Manning, Vince Young, Tim Tebow, Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, and Joe Burrow. Last year;’s winner of the award was Bryce Young of Alabama.

The last Big Ten quarterback to win the award was Troy Smith of Ohio State in 2006. No other Big Ten program has more than one Davey O’Brien Award winner besides Iowa (Chuck Long in 1985 and Brad Banks in 2002) and Penn State, although one was won when Penn State was an independent (and Nebraska‘s Eric Crouch won the award while playing in the Big 12).

Clifford was also named to the Maxwell Award watch list earlier this week.

Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel named to Davey O’Brien, Maxwell Award watch lists

In anticipation of what many expect to be a productive season for the Oklahoma quarterback, Dillon Gabriel was named to Davey O’Brien and Maxwell award watch lists.

Oklahoma is looking to get back on top of the Big 12 and back to the College Football Playoff and the man charged with leading the offense is Dillon Gabriel.

Gabriel, who transferred to OU after a productive career at UCF has been named to a couple of preseason watch lists for the Maxwell and Davey O’Brien awards.

Originally given to the best player in the southwest, in 1981, the award began to focus on the quarterback position. No school has won the award more than the Oklahoma Sooners, and Jason White is one of four players to win the award multiple times. Other winners of the award include Billy Sims (Davey O’Brien Memorial Trophy), Sam Bradford, Baker Mayfield, and Kyler Murray.

The last two awards went to the SEC with Alabama quarterbacks Mac Jones and Bryce Young taking home the award for the nation’s best quarterback.

The Maxwell Award, given to the best all-around player in college football, has been around since 1937, and three Oklahoma Sooners have won the award; Tommy McDonald, Jason White, and Baker Mayfield.

Bo Nix is one of 35 on the Davey O’Brien watch list for best QB

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix is looking to dethrone Alabama’s Bryce Young for the Davey O’Brien Award.

Conference realignment and recruits announcing where they are committing have dominated the news cycle for a couple of weeks. Sometimes we forget that an actual season is just a little over a month away.

The current Oregon Ducks are looking to prove something as they prepare for their first season under head coach Dan Lanning. Among those Ducks is quarterback Bo Nix, the senior transfer via Auburn. After three seasons as a Tiger, Nix is looking to end his career with a bang as a Duck.

Nix was just announced as one of 35 quarterbacks from around the country to be named to the preseason watch list for the Davey O’Brien Award, given out to the nation’s best signal caller.

Alabama’s Bryce Young was last year’s recipient making it two in a row for the Crimson Tide. Mac Jones was the 2020 winner. Young is looking to win the award in consecutive seasons and give Alabama a three-peat.

Nix is looking to become the second Oregon Duck to win the award as Marcus Mariota won it in 2013. Here are the 35 quarterbacks on the watch list.

C.J. Stroud makes Davey O’Brien watch list. As if you didn’t know.

As if we didn’t expect this … #GoBucks

In a “tell me something I didn’t know was going to happen” moment, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud has made the Davey O’Brien 2022 watch list that was announced on Tuesday.

The Davey O’Brien is given to the best quarterback in college football annually and has been handed out since 1981 when it changed to a quarterback-only award.

Stroud is entering his third year at OSU, but only his second year of eligibility as a redshirt sophomore. He had a coup of copy without burning a year in 2019, then set the college football world on fire last season, finishing fourth in the Heisman voting as a redshirt freshman.

Stroud threw for 4,435 yards and 44 touchdowns, completing 317 of 441 attempts for a whopping 71.9 completion percentage. He tossed just six interceptions.

The 6-foot, 3-inch, 215-pounder from Rancho Cucamonga, California is one of 35 names appearing on this year’s list. As the season goes on, others might be added, and some removed based on how things are going.

To date, Troy Smith is the only Ohio State quarterback to ever have taken home the hardware for the Davey O’Brien, back in 2006.

Caleb Williams wins Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week Award

For his performance against the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Caleb Williams was selected the Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the week.

The awards keep rolling in for Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Caleb Williams. After netting the Big 12 offensive player of the week award for his efforts against Texas Tech, Williams received the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the week award.

Williams is well on his way to inserting himself into the conversation of every significant individual award if he keeps up what he’s been doing over the last month.

Since taking over as the quarterback during the Texas game, Williams has thrown 14 touchdowns. He also has four rushing touchdowns and is currently Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded quarterback through week nine of the season.

Caleb Williams has only one interception to his 18 combined touchdowns, 17 since the Texas game. Averaging 4.25 combined touchdown since taking over in the Red River Showdown, if he were to keep that pace, Williams is on pace for 35 combined touchdowns through the Big 12 championship. If the Sooners can make it into the college football playoff, he’ll flirt with 40 combined passing and rushing touchdowns.

That would be an incredible feat considering he’s only played significantly in the last four games, making just three starts.

The games get more challenging after the bye against Baylor, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State, but Caleb Williams has risen to the occasion of every challenge thus far. There’s no reason to think he won’t step up and overcome the obstacles that await him.

Williams is already a semifinalist for the national Davey O’Brien Award, which you could have a say in. All you have to do is like the awards posts on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook, and you can vote for Caleb Williams to win the award.

There’s no telling where this season will end up, but Caleb Williams has already made it a memorable one. “Championship November” has a chance to be a special month for him and the program if they’re able to remain undefeated through the difficult challenges that lie ahead.

He’s just scratching the surface of the player he could be, and every practice rep and snap in a game is going to help him improve upon an already stellar start to his Oklahoma Sooners career.

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Caleb Williams named to Davey O’Brien QB Class of 2021

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Caleb Williams was selected as one of the 40 named to the Davey O’Brien QB Class of 2021.

Oklahoma freshman quarterback Caleb Williams captivated the college football world when he burst onto the scene at the Red River Showdown and spearheaded a wild Sooners’ rally over Texas.

In that 55-48 win over the Longhorns, Williams took an early second quarter fourth and 1 snap, broke loose from would-be Texas tacklers and raced 66 yards into the end zone to announce his presence nationally. Williams wound up the hero that day, finishing with 212 passing yards and a pair of touchdown passes to OU sophomore wide receiver Marvin Mims.

Since then, Williams has largely been marvelous for Oklahoma. The Washington, D.C., native threw for 295 passing yards and four touchdowns in a 52-31 Sooners’ victory over TCU. Then, after a slow start, Williams regrouped last week after halftime against Kansas to finish with a pair of touchdown passes.

Williams has recorded touchdown runs of 40-plus yards in each game he’s played in since taking over the Sooners’ starting quarterback duties. It was a fourth and 3 snap versus Kansas that Williams evaded three Jayhawks defenders before breaking free for a 40-yard touchdown scamper to make the score 28-17.

As a result, Williams has been selected as one of 40 quarterbacks that are officially eligible to win the 2021 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. The next step in the process will be to select the award’s 16 semifinalists from the 40 quarterbacks. Semifinalists will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 9.

Semifinalists will be chosen based on voting from the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee as well as the first round of the fan vote. Fans can vote for Williams on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. The top five vote getters on each social media platform will receive bonus committee member ballots.

Fellow Big 12 quarterbacks Gerry Bohanon of Baylor, Iowa State’s Brock Purdy and Texas’ Casey Thompson were also selected. SMU quarterback and former Sooner Tanner Mordecai made the initial cut as well.
