The Seahawks will have to finish this defensive chess match with the Giants without one of their top young linemen.

The team just announced that third-year outside linebacker Darrell Taylor has been ruled out for the rest of the game due to a hip injury.

Taylor’s snaps have been going to veteran Bruce Irvin, who’s been called up from the practice squad for the second straight week.

Like the rest of Seattle’s defense, Taylor had a brutal start to the 2022 season. However, he’s come on strong the last few weeks. He ranks second in the league with three forced fumbles.

Seahawks have 2 players among league leaders in forced fumbles

The Seahawks have several surprise standout rookies this year.

The Seahawks have several surprise standout rookies this year. A lot of the attention has gone to cornerback Tariq Woolen, who already looks like a star and currently leads the NFL in interceptions.

Fellow rookie corner Coby Bryant hasn’t shined quite as bright, but he has found one niche: forcing fumbles. Heading into Week 7 Bryant leads the league in this stat. Here’s everybody who has at least two forced fumbles so far this season.

Pete Carroll comments on potential personnel changes on defense

On Monday coach Pete Carroll was asked about potential personnel changes on defense.

Good news: the Seahawks had a secret superstar in QB Geno Smith and are among the top offenses in the NFL this year. Bad news: they also have one of the worst defensive units. After four weeks only the Lions are allowing more points and yards per game and Seattle ranks last in defensive DVOA.

On Monday coach Pete Carroll was asked about potential personnel changes on defense. Here’s what he said, per Gregg Bell at the News Tribune.

“We’re still competing. We’ve still got some competition that’s why we’re rolling guys around to see who’s starting. All of our guys are going to keep playing. The guys that have been in there, I think Mafe played 30-something, 34 plays or something like that. That’s getting going. We need more and we’ll keep rolling the guys and making sure that we are trying to keep our guys fresh… I think we just need time to keep working and keep finding our way and making sure we are getting all the right info so we can make the right choices. But now, most everybody that you have seen rotate are going to continue to do so.”

Odds are this defense would look pretty awful no matter what, but injuries have of course played a role in their struggles. The biggest issue has been the absence of Jamal Adams, who suffered a torn quad in Week 1 and is likely done of the season. He’s been replaced by Josh Jones, who thrived during the preseason but has become the weakest link for the secondary.

Another major hole is on the edge, where Darrell Taylor might be the most disappointing player of the season so far. He’s graded out as their worst defender by PFF and had been replaced by Darryl Johnson. However, he’s suffered a significant foot injury so the Seahawks will have to improvise again. Getting Boye Mafe more snaps is the right idea, but it won’t be enough to turn around such an atrocious unit.

Seahawks vs. Cowboys: 7 players who need a strong final preseason game

With that in mind, let’s take a look at seven players who need a strong the performance most.

The Seahawks play their final preseason game of the year on Friday against the Cowboys. The last preseason contest is always about determining who makes the roster and who winds up starting.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at seven players who need a strong performance the most.

DK Metcalf and Darrell Taylor scuffle at Seahawks practice

Watch wideout DK Metcalf and EDGE Darrell Taylor jaw and then scuffle at practice.

The Seahawks are starting the month of August on some shaky ground. Their franchise QB is gone. Their legendary middle linebacker is playing for a division rival, their star strong safety is injured again and their head coach is working from home after testing positive for COVID-19.

For an encore, two of their most-important young players got into a tiff at training camp. Watch wideout DK Metcalf and EDGE Darrell Taylor jaw and then scuffle at practice.

There’s no reason to overreact to this, as these kinds of things happen all the time – we just don’t normally get to see video.

Seahawks: 8 important x-factor players to watch during the 2022 season

The departures of Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner and Duane Brown account for a serious reset in leadership – if not a total rebuild.

The Seahawks made some radical changes to the top of their roster this offseason. The departures of Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner and Duane Brown account for a serious reset in leadership – if not a total rebuild. New captains will have to be chosen on both offense and defense this year, but it will take more than just a couple of guys stepping up in the intangibles department. Replacing the experience that this team lost will require a group effort by several key personnel pieces in Seattle.

Here are eight of the most important x-factor players on the roster to watch.

Seahawks: Ranking the 4 best bargains on the roster in 2022 by cap hit

Here are the four players who represent their best bargains in 2022 based on their cap numbers.

Pro Football Focus released a ranking today of the 32 best contracts in the NFL heading into the 2022 season. None of the players who are on the Seattle Seahawks’ roster at the moment made the cut.

While that’s not a huge surprise considering the state of their books, this team does have a few quality bargains here and there. Here are the four players who represent their best bargains in 2022 based on their cap numbers. All salary info comes from Over the Cap.

Seahawks defensive line ranked among league’s worst by PFF

This seems like an unnecessarily low ranking for a unit with this much talent.

The Seattle Seahawks struggled during the 2021 season for a lot of reasons. Consistently losing matchups on both sides of the line of scrimmage was one of the biggest ones. As we head towards the 2022 campaign, Pro Football Focus seems to believe those issues will continue.

Yesterday, PFF ranked Seattle’s new-look offensive line as the worst in the leauge. For an encore, they have ranked their remodeled defensive line only No. 29 in the NFL.

“The Seahawks have a few starting-caliber pieces on the interior between Poona FordShelby Harris and Al Woods, but it’s difficult to see where the pressure off the edge is going to come from in 2022. Free-agent acquisition Uchenna Nwosu has a career PFF pass-rushing grade below 70.0, leaving it up to one of Seattle’s young edge rushers such as Darrell TaylorAlton Robinson or Boye Mafe to lead the way. Taylor is the most likely player to step up. The former Tennessee Volunteer missed his rookie season in 2020 with injury, but he recorded 36 quarterback pressures in a rotational role last year.

A lot will depend on how much Taylor and Robinson develop as they enter their third year in the NFL. However, this still seems like an unnecessarily low ranking for a unit with this much talent.

The interior rotation may not have a superstar but very few teams have a better top-three than Ford, Harris and Woods. On the edge there are question marks but there’s also a lot of young potential. At worst, this group should be considered average compared to other DLs around the league.

Seahawks EDGE Darrell Taylor says he was ‘hurt’ by Russell Wilson trade

Count defensive end/outside linebacker Darrell Taylor in that camp.

Some Seahawks were not suprised by the blockbuster Russell Wilson trade. For one, former Seattle linebacker K.J. Wright said it’s ultimately what both sides wanted. Meanwhile others were shocked – including D.K. Metcalf.

Count defensive end/outside linebacker Darrell Taylor in that camp. He says he was hurt by the Wilson deal.
