Javon Hargrave is paying close attention to the Daron Payne contract

Daron Payne’s new deal just threw a wrench into free agency plans everywhere as he raises the defensive tackle market.

As NFL free agency nears, the Cleveland Browns and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave have been consistently linked. However, after fellow defensive tackle, Daron Payne gets a new contract on the eve of legal tampering day, NFL teams can now expect to offer a higher figure to lure free agents to their team. And Hargrave knows this.

The Washington Commanders have forked out $90 million to Payne over four years, with $60 million guaranteed after placing the franchise tag on him. PFF had Hargrave’s market set at $18.33 million annually, but now thanks to the Commanders and Payne, he too may be looking for $22.5 million annually.

How Daron Payne’s 4-year, $90M deal with Commanders impacts Javon Hargrave

The Washington Commanders have reached an agreement today on a four-year, $90 million deal with Daron Payne and we’re looking at how that impacts Javon Hargrave

Daron Payne just got paid and may have ensured that Javon Hargrave won’t be returning to the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Washington Commanders agreed to a 4-year, $90 million deal with the 25-year-old defensive tackle.

The $22.5 million per year puts Payne behind only Aaron Donald on the list of highest-paid defensive tackles and exceeds the $18.9 million franchise tag he would have played on in 2023.

With the legal tampering period set to get underway on Monday and the new league year set for Wednesday afternoon, we’re looking at how Payne’s new deal impacts Hargrave.

Lamar Jackson among franchise-tagged players in 2023

Here are the six players who received the franchise tag in 2023.

The deadline to apply the franchise tag tender on pending 2023 free agents has passed, and six players across the league were on the receiving end.

While the Indianapolis Colts were among the rest of the teams who opted not to use the tender—a streak extended to 10 years now—there were some big names who received the franchise tag before Tuesday’s deadline.

Players have until the middle of July to sign the tender or negotiate a contract extension with their current teams. It should be noted that all six players received the non-exclusive franchise tag. That means other teams can negotiate a contract, but the team applying the tag can match or they will be compensated with two first-round picks in exchange.

Here’s a quick look at the six players who received the franchise in 2023:

Bears 2023 free agency preview: Angelo Blackson is out the door

Angelo Blackson went from Week 1 starter to healthy scratch as the year wore on. His days as a Bear are likely over.

NFL free agency will be here before we know it, and the Chicago Bears have plenty of players set to hit the market. From key starters to valuable reserves, general manager Ryan Poles will have important decisions to make about who to bring back.

Here at Bears Wire, we’re going through each individual player and breaking down their 2022 performance and whether or not they fit in the Bears’ long-term plans.

Our next player is Angelo Blackson, a defensive lineman who saw his snaps diminish as the season went on and is on his way out of Chicago.

DT Daron Payne receives franchise tag from Washington Commanders

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne was the first NFL player to receive a franchise tag this offseason. He played at Alabama from 2015-2017.

Former Alabama defensive tackle Daron Payne received the first franchise tag of the offseason from the Washington Commanders. According to Adam Schefter, Payne is projected to be paid $18.937 million.

Payne was a staple along Alabama’s defensive line from 2015-2017. The native of Shades Valley, Alabama recorded 105 tackles and three sacks in three seasons at Alabama.

Payne was a first-round draft pick for the Commanders back in 2018. Since his arrival, Payne has blossomed to be one of the best interior defensive linemen in the NFL.

In 2022, Payne tallied 64 tackles and 11.5 sacks. He was named to the 2023 NFL Pro Bowl for his success on the field.

Payne isn’t likely to be the only former Alabama player to receive the franchise tag. Several others that could potentially be tagged are Josh Jacobs, Dalvin Tomlinson, and A’Shawn Robinson.

The tag is not restrictive, which means there is a chance other teams will be able to reach out and talk to Payne this offseason.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow former Alabama players in the NFL.

Browns free agency target officially franchise tagged by Washington Commanders

Another defensive tackle target is off the board.

It is no secret that the Cleveland Browns need to upgrade their defensive tackle room this offseason through free agency and through the 2023 NFL Draft. However, the list of targets they have to work from has continued to shrink. That list has shrunk down again this morning as the Washington Commanders have officially used the franchise tag on perhaps the best defensive tackle on the market in Daron Payne. With the NFL Scouting Combine coming down the pipeline this week, the Browns may need to get busy on young talent as the pool to work with in free agency continues to minimize.

2023 NFL free agency: Ranking 7 defensive line options for Seahawks

Here are seven quality defensive line options for Seattle.

The Seahawks have a lot of work to do this offseason if they plan on winning a playoff game in the foreseeable future. After they take care of their own pending free agents – most notably quarterback Geno Smith – the first order of business should be improving their defensive line. Fortunately, the 2023 draft class is deep with defensive line talent and there are also a lot of quality free agents to consider, so they have a good shot at a serious upgrade.

Let’s begin with a relatively loaded class of free agents. Here are seven quality defensive line options for Seattle.

Will the Washington Commanders franchise tag Daron Payne?

Some expect Washington Commanders DT Daron Payne to be franchise tagged headed into 2023

The window for franchise and transition tags in the NFL opened up on Tuesday ahead of free agency, which begins next month. The franchise tag allows teams to retain one player from their team on a one-year deal while both sides figure out long-term plans.

Washington Commanders’ defensive lineman, [autotag]Daron Payne[/autotag], will likely find himself playing on the franchise tag in 2023. Payne had a massive fifth year in the league with 11.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss, which was fifth-best in the entire NFL. Payne has been the anchor of the Commanders’ front seven alongside fellow Crimson Tide teammate Jonathan Allen. Chase Young and Montez Sweat are also set to hit free agency this summer so they’ll do everything they can to retain Payne.

Bryan Manning of CommandersWire says that the Commanders will more than likely tag Payne. Having missed hardly any games and coming off of his most productive year so far, it would be an awful time to give up on the 25-year-old defensive lineman. Manning goes on to say,

“It’s doubtful that Washington will allow Payne to hit free agency. If the Commanders apply the franchise tag and can’t agree to a long-term deal, then they could consider trading Payne for more than they’d receive next offseason, which would only be a third-round compensatory pick.”

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Payne and other news surrounding former Alabama players in the NFL.

Make that one less defensive tackle for the Browns to target in free agency

One target is likely already off the board.

With defensive tackle as the team’s biggest need, this offseason fans have clamored for Washington’s Daron Payne. Payne would be a massive upgrade as one of the league’s most talented young players at the position. However, just as many thought reports are saying that the Commanders will likely place their franchise tag on Payne before he can enter free agency.

There would still be a chance the Browns could trade for a tagged Daron Payne but with the cap number coming with the tag and the likely wanted compensation it likely won’t happen. There are however many other players available that would make the defensive line better but the top player at the position may be off the market before even hitting it.

Daron Payne expected to be on Pittsburgh Steelers radar in free agency

Daron Payne should be a priority free agent target for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2023.

Former Alabama defensive tackle was selected No. 13 overall in the 2018 draft by the Washington Commanders franchise. He has been a key member of the team’s defensive line for years and is now set to hit free agency.

Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports listed one free agent that each NFL team should target. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dajani believes Payne ought to be on Pittsburgh’s radar.

“Daron Payne is coming off of a career year in which he recorded 64 combined tackles, 11.5 sacks, 20 QB hits and five passes defended,” writes Dajani. “It’s difficult to stand out on a defensive line that features Jonathan Allen, Montez Sweat and Chase Young, but Payne absolutely did, and made his first Pro Bowl.

“Defensive line is a need for Pittsburgh, as it will have to make decisions on free agents Larry Ogunjobi, Tyson Alualu and Chris Wormley. The Steelers could just opt to sign a rising star whose best football is ahead of him.”

Payne will likely speak with multiple teams before making a decision. He has already been considered to be a player of interest for the Seattle Seahawks. It will be interesting to see where he ends up for the 2023 season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow former Alabama players in the NFL and those that are set to hit free agency.
