Cardinals’ Darius Robinson signs rookie contract

Robinson, the 27th overall pick, signs his four-year rookie contract with a fifth-year team option. The Cardinals have two remaining unsigned picks.

The Arizona Cardinals have signed 10 of their 12 draft picks from this year. On Tuesday, the team announced the signing of defensive lineman Darius Robinson, its second selection in the first round of the draft with the 27th overall pick.

Robinson gets a fully guaranteed four-year contract with a team option for a fifth year.

He played collegiately at Missouri.

Robinson is 6-foot-5 and 285 pounds and played both the defensive interior and the edge for the Tigers.

He was a two-time captain and led the team with 8.5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss last season.

He was honored at the Senior Bowl as the practice player of the week. He had two sacks in the game itself.

He now is under control through potentially the 2028 season.

With his signing, only two unsigned draft pick remain — running back Trey Benson (third round, No. 66 overall) and safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson (fourth round, No. 104 overall).

Redraft of first round of 2024 goes differently for Cardinals

A redraft of the first round gives them Rome Odunze and Nate Wiggins.

It has not even been a month since the 2024 NFL draft ended. The Arizona Cardinals had two first-round picks, selecting receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. fourth overall and then defensive lineman Darius Robinson with the 27th pick.

In a redo of the first round, Draft Wire’s Curt Popejoy has different ideas for the Cardinals.

Rather than taking Harrison fourth overall, he would have them take receiver Rome Odunze out of Washington, who actually went ninth overall to the Chicago Bears.

With talent level almost identical, we opt for Rome Odunze here as a safer pick when it comes to non-football issues.

Expected role for rookie DL Darius Robinson in 2024

Robinson, selected 27th overall in the 2024 draft, should be somewhere between a key rotational player to starter as a rookie.

The Arizona Cardinals used their second first-round pick, the 27th overall in the 2024 NFL draft, to select defensive lineman Darius Robinson, a versatile pass rusher out of Missouri.

He is 6-foot-5 and 286 pounds and had 8.5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss for Missouri in 2023.

He can play inside and out on the defensive line.

What can we expect from him in terms of a role as a rookie?

As a first-round pick, he will be expected to play.

But his situation is a little different than that of receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., selected fourth overall.

While Harrison is expected to not only start but probably be the most productive receiver on the team, Robinson enters a defensive line room that was already somewhat remade in free agency.

They re-signed L.J. Collier to a one-year deal and added free agents Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols each to three-year contracts. They also added Khyiris Tonga.

The projected starting lineup for the D-line would be Jones, Nichols and Collier.

Robinson has the potential to crack the starting lineup over Collier.

In truth, Robinson is very similar in size, versatility and style of play to Collier.

At minimum, Robinson will be a key part of the defensive line rotation, ideally getting roughly 50% of the team’s defensive snaps. He could push Collier to the bench if he proves himself to be a consistent three-down player early on.

He should be anywhere between a solid rotational player to starter as a rookie.

DL Darius Robinson reveals his jersey number

Robinson, the 27th pick the draft, will wear No. 56, a blend between his high school number and college number.

The Arizona Cardinals have not yet announced the uniform numbers for their rookie class. Rookie minicamp begins Thursday. However, two of their draft picks have already spilled the beans.

After receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., the No. 4 overall pick in the draft, revealed that he will continue to use No. 18, the number he wore at Ohio State, fellow first-round pick Darius Robinson, a defensive lineman selected 27th overall, revealed his.

He revealed via his Twitter/X account that he will wear No. 56.

It actually is a perfect blend of his football past. He wore No. 5 in high school and then, in college at Missouri, he wore No. 6.

Defensive linemen don’t often wear numbers in the 50s but he is the second straight drafted defensive lineman to get a number in the 50s. Dante Stills, drafted in the sixth round last year, wears No. 55.

DL Darius Robinson is an exciting first-round pick for Cardinals

The Cardinals get a solid A-minus for their selection of Robinson with the 27th overall pick in the draft.

The Arizona Cardinals had two first-round picks in the 2024 NFL draft. After using the fourth overall pick to select receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., they went with defensive lineman Darius Robinson with the 27th pick in the draft.

What grade do the Cardinals deserve for the pick?

I give it a solid A-minus.

Robinson was the defensive lineman in the draft with the best pass-rushing production. He has inside-outside versatility, although it appears he will probably play more from the interior for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals could have moved up and gotten one of the top edge pass rushers and they had a number of talented cornerbacks on the board.

However, by selecting cornerback Max Melton in Round 2 and Elijah Jones in Round 3, the sting of missing out on guys like Nate Wiggins, Cooper DeJean and Kool-Aid McKinstry was avoided.

Robinson was described by head coach Jonathan Gannon as “violent, violent, violent.”

“He’s really good in the run and pass game and can win in multiple spots in both the run and the pass game,” he said.

In the absence of landing one of the three top pass rushers in Laiatu Latu, Dallas Turner or Jared Verse, and knowing that cornerback was addressed well in Round 2, adding Robinson is a great pick.

He gets added to a defensive line room that might be the most improved position group on the team.

It should work out nicely.

Were Lions trying to trade up for Darius Robinson?

The Lions were ready to trade up for Missouri DL Darius Robinson in the 1st round if Terrion Arnold was unavailable, per Albert Breer of SI

The Detroit Lions executed a first-round trade in the 2024 NFL draft last week. Detroit GM Brad Holmes sent the No. 29 pick and a third-round selection (No. 73) to the Dallas Cowboys for No. 24 overall and a 2025 seventh-round pick.

That deal allowed the Lions to select Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold. The talented corner had fallen later in the first round than expected, and Holmes pounced.

However, one notable insider thinks the Lions might have been looking to move up for a different target had Arnold been unavailable. Albert Breer of SI said he believes Detroit was poised to deal up to select Missouri defensive lineman Darius Robinson:

Detroit had actually laid groundwork for a trade up—I believe Missouri DE Darius Robinson was the target—which made it easy to pivot and get aggressive in going up from No. 29 to No. 24 to land a falling Arnold.

It’s not a surprising conclusion for Breer to draw; the Lions were often connected with Robinson, a Detroit native and good schematic and character fit for the team.

Darius Robinson wore some bling, but is committed to the work

he is really excited to have been drafted by the Cardinals.

The performance by Arizona Cardinals first-round pick Darius Robinson and his defensive teammates helped the Missouri Tigers improve from 6-7 in 2022 to 11-2 last season, including a 14-3 victory over Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.

That led to a light moment at the Friday press conference last week at the Cardinals facility when Robinson and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. were together on stage.

The night before, when Robinson was asked about becoming Harrison’s teammate, he said, “We beat Ohio State in the bowl game, so I have to make sure Marvin knows that when we’re talking ball.”

Of course, Harrison didn’t play and the Buckeyes were also down to their quarterback for much of the game.

Still, Robinson showed off his bling, wearing his large Cotton Bowl ring. When asked if he made sure to show it to Harrison (who obviously couldn’t help but notice it), Robinson was a tad less boastful.

“No, I didn’t show it to Marvin,” he said. “I was telling Marvin we were glad he didn’t play because the whole week leading up everyone was saying, ‘Ohio State, OK. Marvin Harrison. Is he going to play? Is he going to play?’ He didn’t play so we lucked out.”

Robinson was proud of what he and the team accomplished during his college career, and no matter the circumstances of the Cotton Bowl win, that the team earned an invitation to a New Year’s Six game was significant.

Robinson said, “At Missouri we had some tough seasons, but we were really built with an edge. Energy, details, grit, and emotional consistency. I just found myself trying to grow and get better each year and also as a team. Win more games each year. That was my home. That was my family. I was blessed to get two degrees as well off the field and I just love Mizzou.”

Now, he plans to love having a new home and new family with the Cardinals.

Robinson was selected 27th overall and was at the draft in his hometown of Detroit in the green room, although he claimed “I wasn’t antsy” waiting to be picked.

He emphasized, “I knew AZ was the one for me since the beginning of this process. They were one of the first teams that met with me at the combine and one of the first teams that met with me at the Senior Bowl. I’m really excited to be there and just ready to put that work in.”

POLL: Grade the Cardinals’ selection of DL Darius Robinson

The Cardinals added a defensive lineman with some pass-rushing juice with the 27th pick in the draft

The Arizona Cardinals’ second selection of the first round of the 2024 NFL draft Thursday night was defensive lineman Darius Robinson.

Robinson played on the interior until last season at Missouri when he was moved to the edge. He had 8.5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss and then was the top performer at the Senior Bowl.

He has versatility but will play mostly inside for the Cardinals, as things stand currently.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon is excited. Are you?

What grade do you think the Cardinals deserve for taking Robinson?

The story of new Cardinals DL Darius Robinson and his ‘anaconda arms’

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart called Robinson “one of the hardest guys to block in our league.”

It’s in the arms baby, it’s in the arms.

That’s the case with Darius Robinson, the defensive lineman the Arizona Cardinals selected with the 27th overall selection in the first round of Thursday’s draft.

Most pre-draft projections listed Robinson as an edge player because that’s where he played last season at Missouri weighing 285 pounds on his 6-foot-5 frame.

However, the year before, he was at 305 and played on the inside.

At the NFL combine, Robinson said, “When I was at D-tackle, I was 305 my whole career. This past year, I got (down) to 285. (That) feels great right now, but like I told NFL teams, if you see me as a true edge, I can get even lighter, and if you see me going back inside, I’ll gain my weight back. At 285, I can continue to play everything.”

Head coach Jonathan Gannon said he loves Robinson’s “versatility” and “violence,” and referred to him as “a war daddy.” He concluded, “We will have a good plan for him.”

Robinson was enthused about being drafted by the Cardinals, and claimed he wasn’t “antsy” being in the green room at draft central in Detroit as the first round neared the end.

He said, “I knew AZ was the one for me since the beginning of this process. They were one of the first teams that met with me at the Combine and one of the first teams that met with me at the Senior Bowl, so I’m really excited to be there and ready to put the work in.”

Echoing Gannon’s comments about the plan, he said during his talks with the team, “I felt like they have a really good plan of action in how they want to use their defensive linemen in their defense, in their scheme, and to me it felt like I just fit in.”

Oh, yes, the arms, which measure 34.5 inches. Most important, he uses them well.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart called Robinson “one of the hardest guys to block in our league.”

The Athletic’s draft analyst Dane Brugler couldn’t stop raving about Robinson’s physicality, writing that he has “large, violent hands to hammer blockers and physically break down their rhythm; displaces tight ends like rag dolls; (and is) a power-based rusher, (who) wears down blockers with his upper-body strength and aggressive hand usage, deploying his anaconda arms to swallow ball-carriers in the run game.”

Frankly, I’m trying to picture “anaconda arms” swallowing ball-carriers!

Most important is that the Cardinals ended the 2023 season with linemen Leki Fotu, Phil Hoskins, Naquan Jones, Roy Lopez and Ben Stille on the active roster. Dante Stills and L.J. Collier, re-signed as an unrestricted free agent this offseason, were on injured reserve. Fotu is now with the Jets, while Robinson and veterans Justin Jones, Bilal Nichols and Khyiris Tonga have been added to the group since March.

Noting that the depth on the line was tested last year, general manager Monti Ossenfort said, “You can never have enough big guys.”

Consider that mission accomplished.
