HALFTIME REPORT: Alabama down on the road in Memphis; Tigers lead 37-32

Alabama is being tested in its first true road game.

Alabama is playing its first “true” road game of the year, although some would argue that the game in Seattle, WA was a true road game for the Crimson Tide as they took on and defeated No. 5 Gonzaga.

This time, they’re playing a good team on their campus. Memphis comes in at No. 39 in the KenPom rankings, and the building is alive tonight as Alabama tries to extend their record to 9-1 against a tough team on the road.

The Tigers are currently leading 37-32, handing the Crimson Tide its biggest deficit at halftime of the season.

Alabama is shooting 44.8% from the floor, including just 25% from three. Only three 3PT shots have fallen for the Tide on 12 attempts. They’ve done well at the foul line, while not doing a great job of getting there. They’ve hit on 3-of-5.

Alabama needs to do a much better job of taking care of the ball in the second half. They turned the ball over 11 times in the first half.

This time around, the Tide has cleaned up the boards a lot better, allowing just five offensive boards while collecting six themselves.

The Crimson Tide is led in scoring by both Darius Miles and Keon Ellis, who each have six points. Tonight’s rebounding leader for Alabama so far is Jahvon Quinerly, surprisingly, with five boards.

Freshman guard JD Davison has done a phenomenal job dishing the rock in this game, he’s recorded seven assists, and while he has just two points on the night so far, expect Oats to plan to secure him some opportunities in the second half.

Defensively, Alabama is allowing 50% shooting from the floor. The Tigers are shooting 35% from beyond the arc and 66.7% from the free-throw line. They’ve gotten to the charity stripe even more sparingly than the Crimson Tide, booking just three shots from the foul line.

Landers Nolley II leads Memphis in scoring with 11 points. He’s also recorded a couple of assists.

Expect the Crimson Tide to jump off quickly in the second half. Nate Oats is not shy in making adjustments.

18 ex-NBA players charged in sweeping insurance fraud case, including 7 former Celtics

Several Celtics alumni are part of the group so charged, including Glen “Big Baby” Davis and Tony Allen.

A total of 18 former NBA players have been charged in a sweeping insurance fraud case involving the league’s health and welfare benefit plan, with a number of former Boston Celtics among them according to NBC News’ Tom Winter.

A further report from the Associated Press today relates that the players “engaged in a widespread scheme to defraud the plan by submitting false and fraudulent claims to get reimbursed for medical and dental expenses that were never actually incurred” between 2017 and 2020, with the defendants allegedly charging $3.9 million in non-existent services that they received $2.5 million of themselves.

Among the defendants named by Winter with ties to the Celtics include Glen “Big Baby” Davis, Tony Allen, Sebastian Telfair, Will Bynum, Darius Miles, Terrence Williams, and Milt Palacio.

According to the Associated Press, it remains unclear whether all have been arrested on the above charges.

LeBron James celebrates start to NBA career with ‘how it started, how it’s going’ meme

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James celebrated 17 years since his NBA debut back in Sacramento, California.

After LeBron James won his 4th championship less than three weeks ago, it’s yet another reminder of how bizarre this year is that his 4th Larry O’Brien trophy ran up against the 17-year anniversary of his first NBA game. Thursday was the 17th anniversary of LeBron’s first game, as a rookie for the Cleveland Cavaliers against the Sacramento Kings back at the Arco Arena in Sacramento.

James, of course, has come along way from that old Arco Arena, winning four championships, including bringing one to his hometown Cavaliers and most recently, helping the Lakers win their 17th NBA title, tying the Boston Celtics for the most in NBA history. James also celebrated the feat by doing his own version of the newly popular, “how it started, how it’s going” meme.

It’s going pretty well.

Chris Paul reminisces about dunking on Dwight Howard back in 2006

Chris Paul had a poster dunk to remember on Dwight Howard back in December 2006.

Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Chris Paul had a rare “jump with me” moment back during his sophomore season.

Paul and the New Orleans Hornets were playing the Orlando Magic in December 2006, and with just under 3:50 left in the third quarter, New Orleans was down 57-56. Paul went downhill, and as he drove through the lane, he rose and jammed all over 2008 dunk contest champ Dwight Howard.

Now, with Paul being a well-respected veteran, he had the opportunity recently to reminisce on one of his best slams. He talked with Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson on the Knuckleheads podcast about the moment, and he said it’s his favorite dunk besides one he had in a church league.

“That one I sort of surprised myself, to tell you the truth,” Paul said on the podcast.  “Because I went, split it (the screen) right to the middle. And if you see it’s a weird dunk because I used to dunk one hand back then, but I was scared because I felt his body. So I actually dunked, and I tried to grab two hands.”

Standing at 6-foot-1, Paul dunking on Howard, who is listed at 6-foot-10, was an incredible feat. The level of elevation and explosion Paul needed to pull that off was very high.

Paul also surprised hoops fans, though, in the 2020 NBA All-Star Game. During the second quarter, Paul jumped high for an alley-oop pass from Russell Westbrook. The play was one of the best from the midseason exhibition, and it’s one of the best dunks of Paul’s career.

As the Thunder prepare for the Orlando resumption, Paul will be an important part of OKC’s potential success.

This season he has scored 17.7 points per game, dished 6.8 assists a game and shot 48.9% from the field — that field goal percentage is the third-highest of his career.

ESPN put a mic on Darius Miles and he couldn’t stop swearing

In-game interviews may have been a mistake.

Former NBA player Darius Miles, who last played in the league for the Grizzlies in 2009, spent his court time in the NBA All Star-Celebrity Game viciously blocking shots from amateurs half his size and casually dropping expletives on national television. Miles was one of the players who interacted with the ESPN commentary crew in the middle of game action, and he couldn’t help but drop a bit of profanity when describing one of his blocks earlier in the game.

(Warning: Video contains profanity)

Instead of immediately ending the interview, Miles was allowed to stay on the air – which was a terrible call by the production staff. After being reminded that he’s starring on a “family show,” Miles accidentally dropped another expletive while going up for a block.

“My bad! Family show! It’s a family show!”

Fans thought Miles’ slip-ups were hilarious.

There’s a new basketball star named Darius Miles, and he’s going to be a star, too

Darius Miles is now a three-star swingman playing for the IMG Academy postgraduate team, with a future with the likes of Georgetown, Texas A&M or LSU.

Every year there are at least a handful of fifth-year high school graduates who compete on postgrad teams or at select prep schools and make enough of an impression to vault into the upper echelon of the forthcoming recruiting class. This year, one of those prospects appears to be Darius Miles.

No, not that Darius Miles. This one.

The new Darius Miles is an emerging star for the IMG Academy postgraduate squad. According to 247Sports, Miles — who stands 6-foot-7 — scored 33 points across a pair of games at the National Prep Showcase over the weekend.  In conjunction with the rise he’s experienced and impressive performances he has put on, more programs are jumping in to recruit him, including Texas A&M and LSU.

Those SEC programs appear to have a strong line to the swingman, though they’ll have to compete with Georgetown (from his hometown of Washington, D.C.), Rutgers, Rhode Island and possibly others. If there’s any chance he could live up to his namesake’s performance, there will probably be more programs chasing his signature soon.
