Texans sign RB Darius Jackson to the practice squad

The Houston Texans re-signed running back Darius Jackson to the practice squad.

The Houston Texans have brought back running back Darius Jackson.

The club announced they signed the former Dallas Cowboys 2016 sixth-round pick from Eastern Michigan to the practice squad.

Jackson originally spent time with Houston from Aug. 11 to Aug. 23, and the 27-year-old played in two preseason games with the Texans at the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys.

The 6-0, 220-pound running back was not part of the Texans’ roster when Houston prepared to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the preseason finale.

Jackson has tallied six carries for 16 yards through four career games. The last time Jackson was active in a regular season game was Dec. 30, 2018, when the Cowboys beat the New York Giants 36-35.

4 weird decisions from the Texans’ 26-7 preseason victory over the Packers

The Houston Texans pulled off the 26-7 preseason win over the Green Bay Packers. Here were four strange decisions from the game.

The Houston Texans prevailed 26-7 over the Green Bay Packers Saturday night at Lambeau Field.

Houston picked up the first win of the David Culley era, albeit in an exhibition game that has no currency relative to playoff qualification. Nevertheless, it was a great way to signal the beginning for Culley and his new regime.

As is the case any NFL game, there were strange decisions that were made throughout the 60 minutes of playing time. Here are four of the most puzzling decisions from the Texans’ win in Green Bay.

Texans to sign former Cowboys, Colts RB Darius Jackson

The Houston Texans are signing former Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts running back Darius Jackson.

The Houston Texans just don’t have enough running backs.

According to Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790, the Texans are signing former Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts running back Darius Jackson.

Jackson has changed hands more in the NFL than a Netflix login. The Cowboys originally drafted the former Eastern Michigan product in Round 6 in 2016. He was cut midseason and ended up with the Cleveland Browns through the 2017 season.

In 2018, Jackson was an offseason member of the Cowboys’ roster, was cut at the end of preseason, landed on the Green Bay Packers’ active roster, waived, then signed by the Cowboys again, stashed on their practice squad, but saw game time in Weeks 16-17.

In 2019, the 6-0, 220-pound running back made his way through the preseason with Dallas again and landed on the practice squad but was released in September. He was on the Colts’ practice squad for about four days before being released there. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers kept him for a week on their practice squad before being released.

By November, Jackson was back with the Colts on their practice squad and signed a reserve/future contract with the team after the season. He spent 2020 on and off the Colts’ practice squad and active roster.

In 2021, the Las Vegas Raiders brought him into camp, but released him on Aug. 2.

Jackson does have a good attitude about his brief stints on NFL rosters. On Aug. 31, 2018, after the Texans played the Cowboys in the final preseason game of the year at NRG Stadium, Jackson said the only thing to do is just live life and leave it up to fate.

“I try not to think about it too much,” said Jackson. “You can’t sit there and look at your phone. I’m going to go in early, keep my same routine and get a lift in. I’ll probably shower up, play some Fortnite and hope my phone doesn’t ring.”

Jackson’s phone rang from the 832 area code this week, and it was another opportunity in the NFL.

Raiders add two running backs after ‘COVID… hit us in the face’

Raiders add two running backs after ‘COVID hit us in the face’

There were two new running backs on the field on day two of Raiders practice. They were number 37 and 39. If you’re following along, those two numbers are already taken. But they’re in black — safety Tyree Gillespie and cornerback Nate Hobbs respectively. No matter, the Raiders were desperate for running backs and he had to get a number, so taken or not, those are the numbers they got.

Number 37 is Darius Jackson, a former sixth round pick out of Eastern Michigan who played four games in 2018 for the Packers and Cowboys. Number 39 is BJ Emmons and undrafted rookie out of Florida Atlantic.

As for the Raiders desperation, that comes from being without three running backs on the first day of camp.

One of those backs was Kenyan Drake who has an undisclosed injury that has placed in him on the NFI list. The other two are Jalen Richard and Theo Riddick who landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. And right out the gates of camp, there’s the feeling of ‘here we go again.’

“COVID is obviously still very real and it kind of hit us in the face here yesterday,” said Raiders OC Greg Olson. “You never want to have players miss [practice] but that’s the world we live in right now with COVID. It’s unfortunate those guys to have contacted it or to be in close proximity that they actually miss time because of that.”

The three losses at running back left just Josh Jacobs and undrafted rookie Trey Ragas as the lone running backs, making it vital the Raiders brought in someone to take some reps. Should either Richard or Riddick be out due to close proximity, he should be back in short order should he test negative.

Colts release RB Darius Jackson from the practice squad

Colts make a practice squad move.

The Indianapolis Colts released running back Darius Jackson from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Jackson has had a number of on-again, off-again stints on the practice squad and despite the Colts only having three healthy running backs—Jonathan Taylor should be activated this week—they haven’t had the need to call anyone up this season.

Jackson could certainly be signed to the practice squad again sometime in the future but for now they will roll with their three on the active roster to go along with Darius Anderson and Paul Perkins on the practice squad.

Colts sign WR DeMichael Harris to the active roster

DeMichael Harris gets a promotion.

The Indianapolis Colts signed wide receiver DeMichael Harris to the active roster from the practice squad and waived defensive tackle Ron’Dell Carter as a corresponding move, the team announced Tuesday.

With a lack of explosive options on offense, Harris has proven to have some juice. He’s played in only two games but the Colts have found some creating ways to get him the ball and he’s proven to be an impact player after the catch and on end arounds.

Harris signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL draft out of Southern Mississippi. He has caught all seven of his targets for 56 yards while taking two carries for 28 yards.

Carter was signed off of the Dallas Cowboys practice squad earlier in the season but has been a healthy scratch since arriving. He will now be subject to waivers.

The Colts also announced that running back Darius Jackson was signed to the practice squad.

Colts sign RB Darius Jackson to the practice squad

Colts make a practice squad move.

The Indianapolis Colts signed running back Darius Jackson to the practice squad and released kicker Matt Gay from the practice squad, the team announced Friday.

Jackson has been on the practice squad for the entire season but was released when the Colts brought back wide receiver Daurice Fountain, who was waived ahead of the Week 8 matchup with the Detroit Lions.

Jackson has been working with the Colts as a depth piece. With Marlon Mack on the injured reserve list, they have been rolling with rookie Jonathan Taylor while Jordan Wilkins and Nyheim Hines mix in throughout games.

Colts add 4 players to the practice squad

The Colts make some changes to their practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts made four additions to the practice squad, including wide receiver Deon Cain, defensive tackle Kyle Peko, running back Darius Jackson and offensive tackle Gerhard de Beer.

The news of Cain and Peko was given on Monday. Both players were waived before the Week 10 matchup with the Miami Dolphins. As they cleared waivers, the Colts decided to bring both of them back.

Jackson had an earlier stint with the Colts this season in September. He was added to the practice squad after Bruce Anderson was placed on the practice squad injured list on Tuesday.

de Beer likely takes the place of Jackson Barton, who was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs active roster this week. de Beer signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft. He also spent some time with the Green Bay Packers.
