Sixers were in shock when Danny Green dunked in win over Raptors

The Philadelphia 76ers were in complete shock when Danny Green dunked in their Game 2 win over the Toronto Raptors.

PHILADELPHIA–At 34-years old and 13 years in the league, one does not expect Danny Green to go up and dunk at this stage of his career. His role for the Philadelphia 76ers is to go out there, knock down 3s, and be able to be a leader out on the floor.

However, on a fastbreak opportunity in Monday’s Game 2 win over the Toronto Raptors, Green posterized Raptors star Pascal Siakam and he had the entire team shook. It has been a very long time since Green went up for a slam and the team was just shocked when they saw it happen live.

Green finished with 11 points on Monday and he knocked down three triples in the win.

Player grades: Joel Embiid powers Sixers past Raptors in Game 2 win

Joel Embiid leads the Philadelphia 76ers past the Toronto Raptors in Game 2 to take a 2-0 series lead.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers had the momentum to begin their Round 1 series with the Toronto Raptors and they were looking for more on Monday in Game 2. With the Raptors missing a key player in rookie Scottie Barnes, they were able to take advantage and take another step in this series with a 2-0 lead.

The Raptors started well and took an early 11-2 lead as they were playing with the desperation of a team that was facing an 0-2 deficit. However, Joel Embiid then kicked it into high gear and the Sixers went on a big run which eventually led to an easy 112-97 win as the series now shifts to Toronto for two games. Philadelphia led by as many as 29 before Toronto cut it to 11, but they were able to recover and come away with a win.

Embiid scored 19 points in the first quarter on his way to 31 for the game and he had 11 rebounds, Tyrese Maxey had 23 points, eight assists, and nine rebounds, James Harden had 14 and six assists with six rebounds, and Tobias Harris added 20 and 10 rebounds. Danny Green also had 11 points and he had a posterized dunk in transition that belied his 34 years of age.

Here are the grades from a Game 2 win:

Sixers impressed with Joel Embiid as a passer in Game 1 vs. Raptors

The Philadelphia 76ers were impressed with Joel Embiid as a passer in their Game 1 win over the Toronto Raptors.

CAMDEN, N.J. — Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid led the league in scoring with 30.6 points per game and he’s incredibly tough to stop, but the Toronto Raptors held him to 5-for-15 shooting and 19 points in Game 1.

However, Embiid did not commit a single turnover and he had four assists, helping the Sixers win the game. Some might not consider this game impressive, especially for Embiid’s standards, but the Sixers would disagree.

“You know big fella,” said Shake Milton. “He’s good for 40 and 15 whenever he wants. He could’ve easily did that last night if he wanted to, but he just took what the defense gave him and I think he’s gonna make our team that much more dangerous when he plays like that.”

Milton was the beneficiary of some of those Embiid passes as he was able to make some moves off the ball to get open.

“Not only is he getting guys involved, but teams might be a little more reluctant to send that help or they might be reluctant to meet certain guys,” Milton added. “We’re just gonna continue to feed big fella and he’s gonna continue to make the right plays.”

When it comes to Embiid, the biggest thing is he has to trust his teammates and be able to make the right passes. Decision-making is going to be a very important part of this series as it was in Game 1.

“Some people say he didn’t play well, I think Jo had a great game,” said Danny Green. “One of the best floor games I’ve seen him play in a long time. He was trusting, making the pass, finding guys, and giving himself up offensively time and time again. He took his time and was aggressive when he needed to be and took his shots and imposed his will by getting fouls. For the most part, when he caught it, he was looking to make plays and finding guys.”

The zero turnovers Embiid committed are what stands out the most. In the 2019 semifinals, he averaged 4.0 turnovers per game against the Raptors.

“He’s a much better player passing out of the post than he was in that series,” Milton added. “I think you can see it now. He’s throwing looks, he’s just making the right reads so our guys are catching the ball in the paint and having easy layups. That’s a credit to him and the work he’s put in. He talks to us a lot about where he wants us to be, where he expects us to be however the double team comes, and we just try to be there and be ready.”

Player grades: Tyrese Maxey leads Sixers to Game 1 blowout win over Raptors

Tyrese Maxey and the stars for the Philadelphia 76ers stepped up in a big way to lead a Game 1 blowout win over the Toronto Raptors.

This was it. This was the moment the Philadelphia 76ers have been waiting for as they could finally begin their run in the playoffs. After a full week of practice, the Sixers took on the Toronto Raptors in Game 1 of their Round 1 series on Saturday evening and they got off to an excellent start.

As a team facing a lot of high expectations and questionable playoff performances in the past, the Sixers got off to a hot start and led by as many as 24 as they imposed their will on this game. The Raptors fought their way back into it, but the star power of Philadelphia was able to overcome all of that as the Sixers took Game 1 by a score of 131-111.

Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with a career playoff-high 38 points, Joel Embiid had 19 and 15 rebounds, James Harden had 22 and 14 assists with five rebounds, and Tobias Harris added 26 points, six assists, and six rebounds. Shake Milton added 10 off the bench.

Here are the player grades following the win:

Ranking the 3 most important players in order for Sixers to beat Raptors

We are ranking the 3 most important players in order for the Philadelphia 76ers to knock off the Toronto Raptors in Round 1.

As Game 1 of Round 1 between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Toronto Raptors gets closer, Sixers Wire will continue their series preview by ranking the three most important players in this series in order for the Sixers to come away with a win.

Other than Joel Embiid and James Harden, the Sixers will have to rely on other players in order to get the job done and win this series. Philadelphia does not have the same continuity that a team like the Raptors has and they will need other players to step up and provide some help to the star duo.

The Matisse Thybulle situation also throws a wrench into what the Sixers want to do and this will be a tough series all-around. Sixers Wire editor Ky Carlin and contributor Austin Krell will give their three important players in this series for the Sixers:

Sixers say transition defense will be an emphasis in series vs. Raptors

The Philadelphia 76ers are putting an emphasis on transition defense in their series with the Toronto Raptors.

As the Philadelphia 76ers head into this Round 1 series with the Toronto Raptors, they are going to be favored to win this series. They have the two best players in the series in Joel Embiid and James Harden and that should carry them to a series win.

However, the Raptors have a strength that happens to be a big weakness for the Sixers.

Toronto is third in the NBA in transition points at 15.8 and the Sixers rank 28th in the NBA in transition points given up at 15.0 transition points given up. The Raptors thrive in the open court and Philadelphia has to keep them in the half-court on their offensive end.

“Huge emphasis,” said Danny Green. “Getting back is a huge emphasis and rebounding because we know how hard they go to the offensive glass and how fast they like to play so we gotta get back on defense and we have to box out. That’s the two biggest keys. If we do that, it’ll give us more of a chance to win the game.”

Per Cleaning the Glass, the Raptors averaged 91.3 points per 100 possessions in the half-court which is good for the 26th in the league. That is where Philadelphia can help themselves and be able to have success.

The game does slow down in the playoffs compared to the regular season, but coach Doc Rivers is still making sure the Sixers are ready for that challenge.

“They’re not gonna slow down,” said Rivers. “They’re gonna try to play the same and two of their strengths are two of our weaknesses. Transition D and rebounding so they’re gonna try to pound that into us and we’re gonna try to show that we can do both.”

Another big thing is that the Raptors are eighth in the league in rebounding and Philadelphia is ranked 29th. That is going to be a huge factor in this series as well.

“Obviously, they’re physical,” said Georges Niang. “They play a scrappy way and when they turn teams over and get extra possessions by offensive rebounding, it’s usually trouble for the other team. They’re long, they’re athletic, they do uncharacteristic things, but they’re a really talented team. They’re very talented.”

Multiple Sixers explain how Joel Embiid has improved as a vocal leader

The Philadelphia 76ers explain how Joel Embiid has improved as a vocal leader out on the floor and in the locker room.

The Philadelphia 76ers have been successful in the 2021-22 season mostly due to the elite play of Joel Embiid. The big fella has thrown the Sixers on his back on a nightly basis as he has been a huge reason why the team is still a title contender in the East.

The big fella led the league in scoring with 30.6 points per game and he has averaged 11.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists a night. He also shot 49.9% from the floor and 37.1% from deep as a 7-footer facing a lot of heavy defenses.

On top of that, Embiid has been there for his team playing in a career-high 68 games after playing in only 51 in each of the previous two seasons while also playing a career-high 33.8 minutes per night. He has done a great job of taking care of his body.

Player grades: Shake Milton leads Sixers past Pistons in season finale

Shake Milton led the Philadelphia 76ers past the Detroit Pistons in the season finale at home.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers were looking to end the season on the right foot as they played host to the Detroit Pistons in the season finale on Sunday night. It was the second night of a back-to-back and in preparation for the playoffs, they rested Joel Embiid and James Harden for the games that matter.

As far as the matchup with the Pistons is concerned, they focused on making sure everybody was healthy going into the postseason and making sure everybody was in the right groove. The game didn’t mean much for them as the Boston Celtics thrashed the Memphis Grizzlies so that locks the Sixers into the No. 4 seed and a date with the Toronto Raptors in the playoffs.

The Sixers came away with a 118-106 win as Shake Milton hopped off the bench and scored 30 points, Tyrese Maxey had 25 points, Paul Reed had 25 points and six rebounds, and DeAndre Jordan had eight and 11 rebounds. Tobias Harris had six, six assists, and five rebounds and Furkan Korkmaz had nine with Isaiah Joe adding eight. Philadelphia will finish 51-31 on the season.

WATCH: Danny Green finally receives Raptors championship ring

Former UNC guard Danny Green finally received his championship ring from his one season with Toronto in 2019.

After 1,029 days, former UNC wing [autotag]Danny Green[/autotag] received his championship ring from the 2019 title with the Toronto Raptors.

Because of Covid, the NBA bubble took away the first opportunity for Green to return to Toronto and then the Raptors played their home games in Tampa Bay last season.

On Thursday, Green not only received his ring but also received a loud and standing ovation. Green would finish with 18 points on the night.

Green did travel to Toronto when the Philadelphia 76ers played the Raptors on December 28, 2021, but due to the omicron variant, the crowd was limited to 50 percent capacity. Green decided to wait until he could have a full crowd in attendance.

The 13-year NBA vet played one season for the Raptors when he averaged 10.3 points and shot 45.5 percent from three — a career high.

Now in his second year with the Philadelphia 76ers, Green is averaging 5.9 points per game on 38.2 percent shooting from three. He has come off of the bench for the majority of the season.

Green is one of four players (Robert Horry, John Salley and LeBron James) to win a championship with three different franchises.

Sixers discuss starting Danny Green over Matisse Thybulle vs. Pacers

The Philadelphia 76ers discuss why Danny Green started in place of Matisse Thybulle in a win over the Indiana Pacers.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers made an adjustment to the starting lineup on Saturday afternoon as they moved veteran Danny Green back into the starting lineup over Matisse Thybulle. Over the past few months, it has been Thybulle as he has started 49 games on the season and Saturday was only Green’s 27th.

This is the second straight game Green has started, Thybulle was ineligible to play in Toronto on Thursday, and it worked out. Green had 15 points and knocked down four triples in a 133-120 win over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday.

Afterward, coach Doc Rivers explained why he started Green.
