Pre-Spring Position Preview: Breaking down the Alabama RBs

A closer look at the Alabama running backs ahead of spring football practice

Before we know it, new Alabama head football coach Kalen DeBoer will hit the practice field with his Crimson Tide players for the first time when spring practice gets underway in March.

With the retirement of the legendary Nick Saban, there have not been this many question marks surrounding the football program since 2007 when Saban took over.

Contrary to popular belief, Alabama still has one of the most talented rosters in the country and should be right in the thick of the college football playoff conversation.

As the anticipation builds leading up to spring practice, Roll Tide Wire will preview each position group. We have already looked at the quarterbacks, now we will move on to the running backs.

Alabama’s depth at RB could be key to success in 2024

Depth at running back won’t be an issue for Kalen DeBoer and Alabama in 2024

What an offseason it has been for the Alabama football program. Legendary head coach Nick Saban announced his retirement, Kalen DeBoer was brought in as his replacement, and we have seen the transfer portal give and take for the Crimson Tide.

Not that the storm is completely over or anything, but we do have a few moments to collect our breath and our thoughts as we start to look ahead to the 2024 season in Tuscaloosa.

Even with the roster turnover, Alabama remains extremely deep at most positions but you could make the argument that running back may be the deepest and could prove to be one of the keys to success for Coach DeBoer in year one at Alabama.

Let’s take a look at the loaded backfield for the Crimson Tide and what each player’s role could potentially be in 2024.

Alabama lands commitment from 2024 4-star RB Daniel Hill

Alabama landed a commitment from 2024 four-star running back Daniel Hill on Saturday afternoon during the Army All-American Bowl. Hill chose the Crimson Tide over Mississippi State and South Carolina.

Alabama is known for landing and helping produce some of the top running backs in the country. The Crimson Tide will have the opportunity to develop one of the nation’s top running back prospects. On Saturday, 2024 four-star running back Daniel Hill announced his commitment to Alabama. He made the announcement at the Army All-American Bowl.

Alabama hosted Hill for more than 20 visits. That was three times more than he visited any other school during the recruiting process.

Hill, a Mississippi native, chose the Crimson Tide over Mississippi State and South Carolina. The product of Meridian High School was a workhorse for the Wildcats during his high school career. He played quarterback, running back, and wide receiver.

All signs point toward Hill playing running back when he arrives in Tuscaloosa.

Four-star Daniel Hill announces an all-SEC top three

Four-star Daniel Hill announces his top three.

Daniel Hill, a four-star running back from Mississippi, is down with the SEC.

Ranked the No. 155 player in the nation by ESPN, Hill is a 6-foot-2, 220-pound running back at Meridian High School (Meridian, Mississippi). He announced on Wednesday afternoon a final three of Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee.

He has a strong offer list that includes much of the SEC.

As his size would indicate, Hill is a powerful running back, capable of providing some bruising runs. He is difficult to take down, often requiring multiple defenders to corral him.

He also has impressive speed and is talented when lined up as a wide receiver. He is a solid route runner with good jumping ability and soft hands.

In an interview with On3, Hill broke down his top three programs. What he had to say about Alabama, however, was especially noteworthy and intriguing:

“No matter where I choose to go Alabama will always be my first love,” Hill told On3.

Michigan football makes top 8 for 4-star 2024 ATH in SEC country

This one’s probably going to be a tough pull.

Michigan football is continuing to make in-roads with some top-flight prospects half the country away from Ann Arbor.

With recruiting in full swing now that players can return to campus for official visits, one elite player who was offered back in March has the Wolverines among his top schools.

2024 Meridian (Miss.) four-star athlete Daniel Hill has some of the biggest offers in the country. According to the 247Sports Composite, Hill is rated the No. 196 player nationally, regardless of position, is the 16th-best athlete and seventh-ranked player in the state of Mississippi. He dropped his top eight on Sunday, and Michigan football made the cut along with Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, Penn State, Mississippi State, and South Carolina.

It will be tough sledding for the maize and blue in his recruitment, it appears, even if they’re in striking distance. At the moment, South Carolina holds an advantage according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball, as the Gamecocks have three predictions indicating he’ll end up in Columbia.

The Tigers are one of six SEC schools to make the cut.

Auburn is one of several SEC schools pursuing four-star athlete [autotag]Daniel Hill[/autotag] and on Sunday he announced his top eight schools and the Tigers made the cut.

The Meridian, Mississippi native also included South Carolina, Michigan, Penn State, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU and Mississippi State.

Auburn is recruiting him as a running back with [autotag]Cadillac Williams[/autotag] leading the charge. The Tigers already have one running back in four-star [autotag]J’Marion Burnette[/autotag] but they are looking to land two running backs in the 2024 recruiting cycle.

Hills is the No. 196 overall player and No. 16 athlete in the 247Sports Composite ranking. He is also the No. 7 player from Mississippi.
