Report: Panthers have ‘quietly entered’ 2nd round of GM interviews

Per CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the Panthers have quietly entered their second round of GM interviews.

The Carolina Panthers are keeping their search for a new general manager on the down low.

According to CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones, the organization has “quietly entered” the second round of interviews for the vacancy.

Like their head-coaching hunt, the Panthers officially announced interview requests for their group of candidates back on Jan. 8. But unlike their head-coaching hunt, the team has not provided many updates throughout the process.

Based on numerous reports, the Panthers had interviews set up for at least seven of the 11 known candidates—assistant general manager Dan Morgan, vice president of football administration Samir Suleiman, Baltimore Ravens vice president of football administration Nick Matteo, Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds, Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis, Las Vegas Raiders interim general manager Champ Kelly and Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby.

Jones also notes that Morgan went into the search as “strong candidate” for the role.

Panthers confirm GM interviews for 2 in-house candidates

The Panthers will be interviewing two internal candidates for their GM job—assistant GM Dan Morgan and VP of football administration Samir Suleiman.

The Carolina Panthers have officially added two more candidates to their general manager search—and they won’t have to go far to talk to them.

As announced on Wednesday night, the team will be interviewing assistant general manager Dan Morgan and vice president of football administration Samir Suleiman for the opening. Carolina’s intentions to speak with Morgan was first reported upon yesterday by ESPN’s David Newton.

Morgan has been in his current role since 2021. The ex-linebacker and the franchise’s 2001 first-round selection also picked up front-office stints with the Seattle Seahawks, alongside former general manager Scott Fitterer, and the Buffalo Bills between 2010 and 2020.

Suleiman, who joined the organization in 2020, has previously served as the director of player negotiations and salary cap manager for the Panthers. He also interviewed for the team’s general manager vacancy in 2021.

Carolina’s list of known candidates is now up to 11 with the additions of Morgan and Suleiman.

Dan Morgan to interview for Panthers’ GM opening

Panthers assistant GM Dan Morgan will have the chance to become Panthers GM Dan Morgan.

Carolina Panthers assistant general manager Dan Morgan will have a chance to knock the “assistant” part of his title off.

As first reported by ESPN’s David Newton on Tuesday morning, Morgan will interview for the team’s general manager opening. He is now the ninth known candidate for the position.

Morgan’s first run in Charlotte began almost 23 years ago, when he was selected by the Panthers with the 11th overall pick of the 2001 NFL draft. In addition to being part of the franchise’s first-ever NFC championship-winning team in 2003, the University of Miami linebacker also earned a Pro Bowl nod for his 102-tackle campaign in 2004.

After retiring from the game in 2010, Morgan began his front office career as a scouting intern with the Seattle Seahawks—alongside then-area scout Scott Fitterer. He’d then earn promotions to the assistant director of pro personnel post in 2011 and the director of pro personnel post in 2015.

Morgan has been serving as Carolina’s assistant general manager since 2021.

Join us as we track every candidate in the Panthers’ search for a new general manager

Congratulations, Carolina Panthers fans. You got a twofer this time around!

Not only will the organization be on their second head-coaching hunt in as many offseasons—but, with the dismissal of Scott Fitterer, they’ll also be on the prowl for a new general manager.

Keep it here as we track each candidate throughout the process.

15 possible candidates to replace former Panthers GM Scott Fitterer

Who’s next in line to lead the Panthers’ front office? Here are 15 candidates that could replace Scott Fitterer.

The Carolina Panthers didn’t wait long to make a move after wrapping up the worst record in the history of a 17-game season.

On Monday, the team announced they have parted ways with general manager Scott Fitterer. The decision puts an end to a bumpy three-year run, one that resulted in an overall 14-37 record.

So, who’s next for owner David Tepper?

Here are 15 possible candidates for Carolina’s new opening:

Report: Panthers assistant GM Dan Morgan ‘has support’ within organization

Panthers assistant GM Dan Morgan could be a pivotal figure for the organization this offseason.

Can the man who once headed the middle of the Carolina Panthers defense soon head the Carolina Panthers’ front office? Don’t count it out.

Along with news of owner David Tepper working on his head-coaching search with consulting firm Sportsology, Saturday’s report from ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter also included an interesting bit on assistant general manager Dan Morgan.

Schefter writes:

Should he fire Fitterer, Tepper then would have a clean slate to offer a prospective head coach and GM, though Panthers assistant GM Dan Morgan also has support within the organization, according to sources.

Joe Person of The Athletic would later solidify the sentiment, tweeting that Morgan may have a “pivotal role” during the team’s transition.

Carolina first retained the services of Morgan over two decades ago, when they selected him with the 11th overall pick of the 2001 NFL draft. The University of Miami linebacker went on to play sevens seasons for the Panthers, a productive run that yielded a Pro Bowl appearance in 2004.

After retiring from the game in 2010, Morgan began his behind-the-scenes career as a scouting intern with the Seattle Seahawks—alongside then-area scout Scott Fitterer. He rose in the ranks there, earning promotions to the assistant director of pro personnel post in 2011 and the director of pro personnel post in 2015.

Morgan then moved on to “Carolina North,” as he was hired as the director of player personnel for the Buffalo Bills in 2018.

He has served in his current role as Carolina’s assistant general manager since 2021.

Nicole Tepper, Scott Fitterer among interested observers at Wednesday’s practice

The Panthers had a number of attentive onlookers during OL vs. DL drills on Wednesday, including owner Nicole Tepper and GM Scott Fitterer.

The Carolina Panthers had a who’s who of onlookers at practice on Wednesday—and it wasn’t just for kicks.

As noted by both Joe Person of The Athletic and Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer, owner Nicole Tepper was particularly attentive of this afternoon’s offensive line vs. defensive line drills. Tepper was joined by “many others” during that portion of the session—including general manager Scott Fitterer, assistant general manager Dan Morgan, head coach Frank Reich and senior defensive assistant Dom Capers.

With the daunting Dallas Cowboys defense coming to town for a tough matchup on Sunday, Carolina’s overwhelmed offensive line will certainly be a point of emphasis for Week 11—especially given the struggles of rookie quarterback Bryce Young. According to Pro Football Focus, the No. 1 overall pick has been pressured on 132 of his dropbacks—the fifth-most in the league thus far.

The unit will have a different look this week, as the Panthers released starting left guard Calvin Throckmorton yesterday. Rookie Chandler Zavala and 2022 sixth-round pick Cade Mays are possibilities to take over on the vacated spot.

Oh, and some guy named Luke Kuechly was there today as well . . .

Dan Morgan: This isn’t just Bryce Young’s show

Panthers assistant GM Dan Morgan on Bryce Young entering his rookie season: This isn’t something that he has to do alone and it’s not all on his shoulders

Being the No. 1 overall pick of the NFL draft inherently comes with a bevy of responsibility. And that responsibility widens, quite considerably, when you’re taken out of that spot to be a franchise quarterback.

But as for who the Carolina Panthers just bestowed that upon, he won’t be carrying that burden by himself.

Assistant general manager Dan Morgan spoke with reporters ahead of Tuesday afternoon’s practice. When asked of Young—who he, obviously, had a hand in bringing over to Carolina—Morgan brought the usual praise.

“Bryce is just an impressive individual,” Morgan said, via ESPN’s David Newton. “I think, first and foremost, him off the field—just the kind of person he is, the kind of human being is—really makes you fall in love with the kid. And then obviously, you can see what he does on tape. He’s special. He’s got the pocket presence, he has the poise, he has the accuracy, anticipation. He has all those things you want.”

All those things may mean nothing, though, if there’s no one to share it with. Morgan and the rest of the Panthers front office, however, did some work this offseason to make sure that isn’t the case for the 22-year-old passer.

“And this isn’t Bryce’s show,” he added. “He’s not doing this alone. We’re not dependin’ on him to go out and make every single play. That’s why we brought guys in like [Adam] Thielen and Miles Sanders and DJ Chark and those kind of guys. So, this isn’t something that he has to do alone and it’s not all on his shoulders.”

In addition to those veterans, the Panthers also drafted second-round wideout Jonathan Mingo and fourth-round offensive lineman Chandler Zavala to help Young out. And while the rookie still doesn’t have the greatest of supporting casts, it’s a heck of a lot more than what the last franchise guy got when he started out here.

Panthers up to 1,400 reports on next week’s potential cut candidates

Panthers assistant GM Dan Morgan gave reporters a sneak peek into the team’s approach for next week’s big cutdown day.

Things are going to be quite different, and perhaps quite hectic, for NFL teams in their journeys to their 53-man rosters. But Dan Morgan and the rest of the Carolina Panthers front office are ready.

The team’s former linebacker and current assistant general manager spoke with reporters on Tuesday, one week before the big cutdown of the summer. And Morgan gave a little peek into how the braintrust is operating for the new rules of roster construction.

“We’re buildin’ our preseason board right now,” Morgan said, via Sheena Quick of Fox Sports Radio 1340. “There should be 1,200 guys or so that are gonna get cut at the cutdown. We’re up to like 1,400 reports. So what we’re doin’ right now is we’re buildin’ our board and we’re stackin’ it by position.”

As opposed to previous summers, where teams were given three separate checkpoints of cutdowns, there will be one day where the chopping block is used—on Aug. 29. Teams must get from 90 players to their initial 53-player program on that Tuesday.

Morgan continued.

“And then from there, obviously, we’ll talk about it as a staff and we’ll look who we’re really interested in and who we’re thinkin’ about claimin’ at the cutdowns,” he added. “So right now, we’re just writin’ a ton of reports. Our scouts are doin’ a great job. And we’re just really excited about the 53-man cutdown and that whole process.”
