Report: Panthers have ‘quietly entered’ 2nd round of GM interviews

Per CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the Panthers have quietly entered their second round of GM interviews.

The Carolina Panthers are keeping their search for a new general manager on the down low.

According to CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones, the organization has “quietly entered” the second round of interviews for the vacancy.

Like their head-coaching hunt, the Panthers officially announced interview requests for their group of candidates back on Jan. 8. But unlike their head-coaching hunt, the team has not provided many updates throughout the process.

Based on numerous reports, the Panthers had interviews set up for at least seven of the 11 known candidates—assistant general manager Dan Morgan, vice president of football administration Samir Suleiman, Baltimore Ravens vice president of football administration Nick Matteo, Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds, Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis, Las Vegas Raiders interim general manager Champ Kelly and Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby.

Jones also notes that Morgan went into the search as “strong candidate” for the role.

Panthers reportedly interviewing 2 more GM candidates on Monday

Kansas City’s Brandt Tilis and Baltimore’s Nick Matteo are reportedly interviewing for the Panthers’ GM job today.

Two high-ranking individuals from two high-ranking organizations are set to talk to the Carolina Panthers about their general manager position.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are interviewing Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis and Baltimore Ravens vice president of football administration Nick Matteo today. They are two of 11 known candidates for the organization’s front-office opening.

Tilis is currently in his 14th season with the Chiefs. He’s also served as Kansas City’s director of football administration (2017 to 2020), director of salary cap and football operations analytics (2014 to 2016) and as a salary cap/contract analyst (2010 to 2013).

Matteo, another numbers guy, is now in his fourth season for Baltimore. He—per the Ravens’ official site—”oversees all areas of football administration, including day-to-day salary cap management and general roster transactions.”

To this point, the Panthers have also reportedly locked in or conducted interviews with Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby, Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds, Las Vegas Raiders interim general manager Champ Kelly and with two of their own in assistant general manager Dan Morgan and vice president of football administration Samir Suleiman.

Panthers request interviews with multiple members of the Ravens for open HC and GM positions

Panthers request interviews with multiple members of the Ravens for open HC and GM positions

With the 2023 regular season now behind us, teams throughout the league are searching for the right people to fill any vacant roles on their staff.

After finishing with the best record in the league, it is no surprise that teams are looking towards the Baltimore Ravens for solutions. The Carolina Panthers, in particular, need change following the firing of multiple coaches and their general manager after finishing with the worst record in the NFL.

According to the official team website, the Panthers have requested interviews with three members of the Ravens: offensive coordinator Todd Monken and defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald for their vacant head coach position, and vice president of football administration Nick Matteo for their general manager opening.

Macdonald’s name has skyrocketed to the top of aspiring young coaches in the NFL after fielding elite defenses in his first two seasons as defensive coordinator for Baltimore. Macdonald’s unit became the first defense in NFL history to finish a season ranked No. 1 in sacks, points per game, and takeaways.

The Ravens’ offense started to show their true potential at the end of Monken’s first season as offensive coordinator, as Baltimore scored 56 points against the Miami Dolphins and 33 points against the San Francisco 49ers. The Ravens’ offense finished the season ranked No. 4 in both total points and points per game. Quarterback Lamar Jackson experienced career-highs in passing yards and completion percentage in Monken’s offense and is likely to win MVP.

Matteo has been with Baltimore since 2019 and according to the official team website “has negotiated the contracts of all 37 draft picks during that time, plus several free agents, and has worked on the extensions for several key Ravens.”

Congratulations, Carolina Panthers fans. You got a twofer this time around!

Not only will the organization be on their second head-coaching hunt in as many offseasons—but, with the dismissal of Scott Fitterer, they’ll also be on the prowl for a new general manager.

Keep it here as we track each candidate throughout the process.

Panthers confirm interview requests for 8 GM candidates

The Panthers confirmed interview requests for eight GM candidates on Monday.

Hmmm . . . it’s almost as if the Carolina Panthers knew they weren’t moving forward with Scott Fitterer.

On Monday, not even 12 hours after announcing his firing, the team confirmed their interview requests for eight general manager candidates.

The list is as follows:

  • New York Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager Mike Greenberg
  • Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis
  • Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby
  • New Orleans Saints assistant general manager Khai Harley
  • Baltimore Ravens vice president of football administration Nick Matteo
  • Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds
  • Las Vegas Raiders interim general manager Champ Kelly

Just as in their head-coaching hunt, where they’ve also confirmed interview requests for nine candidates, the Panthers are not permitted to hold in-person interviews for the position until Jan. 22.

This will be the first time the organization is set to hire both a new general manager and a new head coach in the same offseason since 2002.
