Chargers hire Joe Hortiz over Colts’ Ed Dodds for GM

Ed Dodds seemingly remains with the Colts for another year.

Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds is seemingly staying put for another year after it was reported the Los Angeles Chargers are planning to hire Joe Hortiz as their next general manager.

Dodds was in the running as a finalist for the Chargers’ general manager vacancy, and his relationship with new head coach Jim Harbaugh gave him a shot to be a realistic candidate.

However, Dodds is expected to stay with the Colts for another year.

Outside of replacing a few defensive assistant coaching roles, the Colts will be returning with the mostly the same front office and coaching staff as the crew that led the 2023 campaign.

Dodds will continue to be Chris Ballard’s right-hand man in what will be a pivotal offseason to build around young quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Where the Chargers’ general manager search stands after hiring Jim Harbaugh

After hiring Jim Harbaugh to be their next head coach, the Chargers will now figure out who will be the general manager.

The Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh as head coach last night in a franchise altering move. After years of flirting with NFL interest and winning the College Football Playoff National Championship at Michigan, he’s back in the NFL. But now, the focus shifts to “building infrastructure” as Harbaugh said yesterday. That will most likely start with the completion of the Chargers’ general manager search.

Brandon Brown completed a second interview yesterday for the position. Ravens Director of Player Personnel Joe Hortiz will also come back for a second in-person interview today. The Chargers first round of interviews included Hortiz and Brown as well as JoJo Wooden, Ian Cunningham, Terrance Gray, Jeff Ireland, Ed Dodds, Jeff King, and Dawn Aponte.

Of those candidates, quite a few have some connections to Harbaugh. Brandon Brown has been mentioned by Albert Breer as a candidate that could fit that mold. Per Benjamin Allbright, Michigan was a school Brown scouted while he was with the Colts and Eagles.

Joe Hortiz doesn’t have a direct connection to Jim Harbaugh himself, but obviously has worked directly with his brother John Harbaugh in Baltimore. The same is true for Ian Cunningham, who spent nearly a decade with the Ravens as a scout.

After missing out on the Raiders general manager job following the hiring of Tom Telesco, Ed Dodds is still available too. Dodds has long been viewed as a potential “Harbaugh GM” if he was to make a return in the NFL. The two reportedly have a strong relationship dating back to Harbaugh’s time as quarterbacks coach with the Raiders. Back then, Dodds was a Pro Personnel Intern in Oakland.

Harbaugh will presumably want to put together his staff and mobilize the Chargers’ offseason as soon as possible, so I’d expect the general manager search to quickly accelerate now that the former Michigan coach has finally put pen to paper.

Colts’ Ed Dodds won’t be Raiders new GM

Ed Dodds won’t be the new GM for the Raiders.

The Indianapolis Colts are one step closer to keeping the front office intact this offseason as the Las Vegas Raiders decided to go in a different direction than Ed Dodds for their general manager vacancy.

Dodds was considered a finalist for the Raiders general manager role. However, the Raiders hired former Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco, who was let go from that role during the 2023 season.

Dodds has now interviewed twice with the Raiders when they’ve had a general manager vacancy. The other time came during the 2022 offseason when the Raiders eventually hired Dave Ziegler.

The Colts aren’t out of the woods yet regarding keeping Dodds, the right-hand man to general manager Chris Ballard.

Dodds is still in the running for the Chargers general manager vacancy, and despite the salary-cap trouble they may be in, the fact that Justin Herbert is there makes it an appealing job.

We should know the fate of that decision soon enough, but the Colts are one step closer to keeping the nucleus of the front office together for another season.

Colts’ Ed Dodds a finalist for Raiders GM job

Ed Dodds is a finalist for the Raiders GM vacancy.

Update: The Raiders are hiring Tom Telesco as their new general manager

Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds is among the finalists for the Las Vegas Raiders general manager vacancy, according to reports Monday.

Considering his history with the organization and the recent success he’s had with he Colts, it’s no surprise Dodds made it to the second round of interviews.

He will be joined by Raiders interim general manager Champ Kelly and former Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco.

For the most part, the Colts will be seeing the return of just about everyone on the coaching staff and in the front office. It likely comes down to whether Dodds gets the job with the Raiders.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Raiders general manager job considering the team already hired Antonio Pierce as the head coach following his impressive run in the interim down the stretch of the season.

The Colts opted to keep defensive coordinator Gus Bradley for another season despite an up-and-down campaign while offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter is not expected to be in the running for the Eagles offensive coordinator vacancy.

Only time will tell whether Dodds gets the job, but this will be something to monitor this week.

Report: Panthers have ‘quietly entered’ 2nd round of GM interviews

Per CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the Panthers have quietly entered their second round of GM interviews.

The Carolina Panthers are keeping their search for a new general manager on the down low.

According to CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones, the organization has “quietly entered” the second round of interviews for the vacancy.

Like their head-coaching hunt, the Panthers officially announced interview requests for their group of candidates back on Jan. 8. But unlike their head-coaching hunt, the team has not provided many updates throughout the process.

Based on numerous reports, the Panthers had interviews set up for at least seven of the 11 known candidates—assistant general manager Dan Morgan, vice president of football administration Samir Suleiman, Baltimore Ravens vice president of football administration Nick Matteo, Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds, Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis, Las Vegas Raiders interim general manager Champ Kelly and Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby.

Jones also notes that Morgan went into the search as “strong candidate” for the role.

Chargers conclude interview with Ed Dodds for general manager opening

Ed Dodds comes with plenty of experience.

The Chargers on Wednesday confirmed they have interviewed Ed Dodds for their general manager position.

Dodds finished up his seventh season as the Colts’ assistant general manager, a role in which he and Chris Ballard have been instrumental in drafting and developing a lot of quality talent.

Before his time as assistant GM, Dodds was hired as Indianapolis’ vice president of player personnel in 2017.

Prior to Indianapolis, Dodds spent 10 seasons (2007-2016) with the Seahawks, working in different roles before becoming their senior personnel executive.

With Seattle, Dodds was part of six winning seasons, five NFC West titles and 10 playoff wins in addition to two Super Bowl appearances.

Dodds’ time in the NFL ranks began with the Raiders front office for four seasons starting in 2003 to 2006.

Chargers general manager candidate profile: Ed Dodds

Examining who Ed Dodds is, where he comes from and why he’d be a good choice to be the GM of the Chargers.

For the first time in a decade, the Chargers are searching for a new general manager.

Tom Telesco and head coach Brandon Staley were fired on December 15, ushering in a new era of football in one half of SoFi Stadium. Telesco, hired in 2013 as the youngest general manager in franchise history, brought the team to just three playoff appearances and two wins.

So, who could be next?

Colts Assistant General Manager Ed Dodds

Called the number one general manager candidate in this year’s hiring cycle by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Dodds will reportedly meet with the Chargers on Wednesday. He has also interviewed with Carolina and Las Vegas, the latter of whom gave him his first job in the league in 2003.

Dodds has built a name for himself purely via scouting. From 2003-2006, he was a pro personnel intern for the Raiders, before landing his first full-time job as a pro personnel scout with Seattle in 2007. The Seahawks moved him to the college side the following year, where he remained as an area scout until 2014 when he was elevated to a national scout. Another promotion followed in 2015 to senior personnel executive. In 2017, Indianapolis hired him away to become vice president of player personnel before he entered his current role of assistant GM under Chris Ballard in 2018.

An alumni of Texas A&M-Kingsville, where Ballard once served as defensive coordinator, Dodds’ current role as assistant general manager is primarily overseeing the day-to-day operations of the college and pro scouting departments. It’s a fitting role for a man whose tenure in the league has included, in part, the selections of Kam Chancellor, KJ Wright, Richard Sherman, Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith, Grover Stewart, and Zaire Franklin on Day 3 alone.

That work has not gone unnoticed: Dodds has been a hot GM candidate since at least 2020 when he turned down an interview with the Browns. In 2021, he interviewed with Carolina but withdrew from the running and was interviewed but not selected for the job with the Lions. Chicago, Las Vegas, and Pittsburgh all made inquiries in 2022, with Dodds withdrawing from the Bears’ search. (Dodds did not get a reported interview for the openings in Arizona or Tennessee last season.)

Indianapolis’ assistant GM is on record saying there’s a method to all of this. In a 2022 article with The Athletic reporter Zak Keefer, Dodds said:

I mean, there’s quality of life. You have to feel like you’re being allowed to make an impact and do it the way you know works. I mean, there’s more than one way to skin a cat — like, there are other ways that work, but there’s a way I know, and I’m not going to learn some new way and become an expert on it at 42 years old. That’s not the training ground to do it.

The way that Dodds does know it took him two years to perfect, from scouting travel to area scout documentation to background research. He uses a modified version of legendary GM Ron Wolf’s 1-9 grading scale, has every member of his team watch every player, and stays in the office nearly every day from December to April, 12 hours on weekdays and 6 on weekends. That sort of demand requires buy-in from staff, even in an industry famous for early mornings and late nights around the league, and Dodds has consistently gotten it and been able to reap the rewards.

Dodds has also been tied to the oft-rumored Chargers’ head coaching target Jim Harbaugh. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported last week that Dodds was seen as the “Harbaugh GM” when he interviewed for the Raiders job in 2022. The two men also overlapped in Oakland in Dodds’ first year in the NFL: while Dodds was a pro personnel intern, Harbaugh was completing his second season as the Raiders’ QB coach. It’s a brief connection, but one that has reportedly spun into a strong relationship that has led insiders to believe Dodds is still the most realistic general manager option for a team looking to employ the current Michigan head coach.

An old-school Texan seen as one of the league’s best talent evaluators, Dodds has been in high demand for close to four years now, but his commitment to his own system and alleged desire to find the perfect situation have prevented him from finding his own team to run thus far. Could Los Angeles, where ownership under the Spanos family is famously disconnected from personnel decisions, be the situation to link Dodds’ own interest with a similar desire from the organization to hand things over?

Report: Panthers to interview Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds on Sunday

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Panthers are set to interview Ed Dodds for their GM opening on Sunday.

The Carolina Panthers won’t be tuned all the way in to Sunday’s Wild Card Round action.

According to ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, things will be a bit busy—as they’ll be interviewing Ed Dodds for their general manager job. Dodds, one of Carolina’s 11 known candidates, is currently the assistant general manager for the Indianapolis Colts.

The Panthers announced that they had requested to speak with Chris Ballard’s right-hand man this past Monday. That official release also included the names of New York’s Brandon Brown, Tampa Bay’s Mike Greenberg, Kansas City’s Brandt Tilis, Philadephia’s Alec Halaby, New Orleans’ Khai Harley, Baltimore’s Nick Matteo and Las Vegas’ Champ Kelly.

This will be Dodds’ second shot to lead Carolina’s front office. His first interview with the Panthers came in 2021, when the organization ultimately landed on Scott Fitterer.

In addition to Dodds and his aforementioned company, the Panthers have also expressed interest in their own assistant general manager Dan Morgan, their vice president of football administration Samir Suleiman and Detroit Lions chief operating officer Mike Disner.

Colts’ Ed Dodds schedules GM interviews with Panthers, Chargers

Ed Dodds has interviews scheduled with the Panthers and Chargers.

Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds will interview for the general manager vacancies of the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Chargers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday.

It was previously reported that the Panthers requested to interview Dodds for their general manager vacancy, and the Colts granted that request. According to Schefter, Dodds will interview for the vacancy on Sunday.

As for the Chargers, it wasn’t clear if Dodds would be on their list at first, but he is now. According to Schefter, Dodds is scheduled to meet with the Chargers brass on Wednesday.

Whether Dodds would want to work with an owner such as David Tepper, who is known for being heavily involved remains to be seen. But it makes sense for him to interview for the vacancy regardless simply for the opportunity.

The role with the Chargers is certainly appealing despite the salary-cap issues they are going to run into this offseason. Having a quarterback like Justin Herbert makes an outlook much brighter for an incoming general manager.

We’ll see if anything comes from these interviews, but it’s clear that Dodds is in high demand this offseason.

Colts’ Ed Dodds to interview for Raiders GM vacancy Friday

Ed Dodds will interview for the Raiders GM vacancy Friday.

Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds reportedly will interview Friday for the Las Vegas Raiders general manager vacancy.

Dodds is on the list of potential general managers for the Raiders after they parted ways with Dave Ziegler during the regular season. There is a strong history between Dodds and the Raiders so this is certainly something to monitor.

This is no surprise considering the link and history Dodds has with the Raiders. He got his start in Oakland under Al Davis and interviewed for their general manager vacancy during the 2022 offseason.

Dodds has been the right-hand man to general manager Chris Ballard since the latter began his tenure in 2017. He got his start in Oakland as a scout before joining the Seattle Seahawks for 10 years, serving in scouting and senior personnel executive roles.
