Remembering the Giants’ biggest training camp fights from recent years

As the New York Giants ready themselves for the first padded practice of the year, here’s a look back at some of their biggest camp fights.

The New York Giants will put on the pads for the first time on Monday, which means tempers are likely to flare and fists may begin to fly.

That may sound dramatic, but it’s just the nature of NFL training camps. And when considering the Giants will also hold intrasquad scrimmages once per week, it seems almost inevitable that a few punches will be thrown.

With that in mind, here’s a look back at some of the biggest and most memorable Giants training camp fights from recent years.

2019: Lorenzo Carter vs. Nick Gates

The Giants didn’t do much fighting in 2019, but there were a few dust-ups.

One such incident came last August when linebacker Lorenzo Carter and offensive lineman Nick Gates got into a bit of a scrap.

While neither player swung at the other, there were a few shoves before teammates swarmed and pulled the two apart.

Several former Giants coaches, players represented in Super Bowl

Several former New York Giants coaches and players will be represented in Super Bowl LIV.

New York Giants fans might see some familiar faces on the sidelines at this Sunday’s Super Bowl between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 49ers have three ex-Giants on their roster, but only kicker Robbie Gould is active. He kicked for Big Blue in 10 games during the 2016 season. The other two players — defensive end Damontre Moore and center Weston Richburg — are on injured reserve.

Linebacker Joey Alfieri spent this past summer with the Giant at training camp and was released before the season. He is now on the Niners’ practice squad.

The Chiefs do not have any ex-Giants on their roster, but as a side note, Pat Shurmur’s son, Kyle — a quarterback — is on their practice squad.

Kansas City does have three ex-Giants coaches on Andy Reid’s staff starting with defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Spags served two stints as the Giants’ defensive coordinator. The first was under Tom Coughlin from 2007-2008, leading the Giants’ defense in their Super Bowl XLII victory over the undefeated New England Patriots.

Spagnuolo’s second stint was under Coughlin again from 2015 and stayed on after Ben McAdoo took over in 2016. Spags was named interim head coach when McAdoo was fired late in the 2017 season.

Dave Merritt is the Chiefs’ defensive backs coach. Merritt was a long-time Giants assistant under Tom Coughlin and then Ben McAdoo, sticking with the Giants from 2004-2017. He coached the Arizona Cardinals’ defensive backs in 2018 before joining Reid in Kansas City this season.

Sam Madison was a 12-year NFL veteran who played his first nine seasons for the Dolphins in Miami before signing with the Giants in 2006. He was a four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro with Miami, but his biggest moment came in Blue as a key member of the Giants’ secondary in their Super Bowl XLII drive.

The 49ers have one coach with a Giants connection and it’s only because he’s a local product — offensive quality control coach Miles Austin, a Summit, New Jersey native who played his college ball at Monmouth. Austin, a wide receiver, played eight seasons for the Dallas Cowboys from 2006-13, making the Pro Bowl twice.

49ers officially place Damontre Moore on IR, add DL to roster

The 49ers shuffled their defensive line after Damontre Moore’s season ended due to a broken forearm.

The 49ers on Wednesday officially announced a trio of expected roster moves. Defensive lineman Damontre Moore was placed on Injured Reserve with a broken forearm, and defensive lineman Jeremiah Valoaga was elevated from the practice squad. Valoaga was replaced on the practice squad by Alex Barrett.

Moore was hurt in Sunday night’s win over the Packers and played through most of the game with a broken arm. He was a preseason star for San Francisco who was re-signed two weeks ago after Ronald Blair III went on IR with a torn ACL. He had five tackles, a quarterback hit and a forced fumble in two games.

Valoaga was also very good for the 49ers in the preseason. He finished with 4.5 sacks – the second highest total in the NFL for the exhibition season. He made his way to the 49ers via the Lions after Detroit signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2017. All nine of his games came in his rookie season. He had 1.0 sacks, five tackles, two tackles for loss and five quarterback hits in those nine games.

The 49ers will likely turn to Valoaga right away when they face the Ravens in Baltimore. A deep defensive line rotation is necessary against their run-heavy offense.

Valoaga’s vacated practice squad spot was filled by defensive lineman Alex Barrett. Barrett was also a Lions undrafted free agent in 2017. He played two games for Detroit in that season. Valoaga and Barrett both spent time under 49ers defensive line coach Kris Kocurek when he held that position for the Lions.

Damontre Moore to go on IR with broken forearm

The 49ers lost another defensive end Sunday.

The 49ers can’t seem to keep their defensive ends healthy. Damontre Moore, who replaced the injured Ronald Blair III after he tore his ACL, broke his forearm in Sunday night’s win over the Packers according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

He told reporters Monday that Moore suffered the broken forearm during the Packers game and played through it. Shanahan didn’t learn it was broken until after his postgame press conference.

Moore was a preseason star for San Francisco, but couldn’t land a roster spot with so much depth at defensive end. He went unsigned until the 49ers re-added him after Blair went down in the team’s Week 10 loss to the Seahawks.

He played two games for the 49ers and posted five tackles, one quarterback hit and a forced fumble that helped ice a Week 11 win over the Cardinals.

Shanahan said Moore will likely be replaced by Jeremiah Valoaga from the practice squad. Valoaga also had a stellar preseason where he finished second in the league with 4.5 sacks. His performance was enough to earn him a practice squad spot. The 25-year-old former Lion played nine games for Detroit as an undrafted rookie in 2017. He had 1.0 sacks, five tackles, two tackles for loss and five quarterback hits in those nine games.

With Dee Ford nursing a hamstring injury, Valoaga could get thrust into action quickly once he’s added to the roster.

49ers vs. Packers: 6 players to watch on defense

The 49ers defense as allowed 20-plus points in three consecutive games for the first time all season.

The 49ers’ defense has allowed 20-plus points in three consecutive games for the first time all season. It won’t get any easier with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers coming to town for their highly-anticipated Sunday night matchup. The defense will need to click in all facets of the game to stop Packers head coach Matt LaFleur’s offense.

Here are the six players that will be key in doing just that:

CB Richard Sherman

Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

Sherman was called for pass interference three times last week against the Cardinals. Sunday night he’ll be tasked in coverage plenty against wide receiver Davante Adams, who leads the Packers in targets despite missing four games. Sherman will need to be careful in coverage because the last thing the defense wants to do is give Rodgers free yards. Pass interference penalties against the Packers are especially damaging because Rodgers isn’t afraid to take deep shots.

A new winning streak: Studs and duds from 49ers 36-26 win over Arizona

The 49ers moved to 9-1 with their victory over the Cardinals on Sunday in a hard fought game.

The 49ers moved to 9-1 with their comeback victory over the Cardinals on Sunday. It was the second time in 15 days that Arizona gave San Francisco a fight in two of the 49ers’ toughest tests of the season. They got off to a slow start on both sides of the ball Sunday, but bounced back thanks to strong performances up and down the roster.

Here are the studs and duds from the 36-26 win:

Stud: QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The quarterback had the most productive game of his career, completing 34-of-45 passes for a career-high 424 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. That included the game-winning drive where Garoppolo completed six-of-seven throws, including the game-winner to running back Jeff Wilson Jr. in the face of a six-man rush that got to him quickly. Garoppolo started slow in the first quarter with one completion for four yards, but was huge in the second half where he threw for 303 of his 424 yards. Of Jimmy Garoppolo’s 18 touchdown passes this season, eight have come against Arizona in two of his best games.

49ers sign former Giants DE Damontre Moore

The San Francisco 49ers have signed former New York Giants third-round pick Damontre Moore.

The San Francisco 49ers have re-signed former New York Giants defensive end Damontre Moore. The Giants originally selected Moore in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Moore was last seen playing for San Diego Fleet in the Alliance of American Football in an effort to revive his career. The league of course ceased operations without making it through a full season.

Moore obviously caught the eye of the 49ers, who just signed him for the third time since April. After being signed on April 5, Moore was waived on May 16. He was signed again on July 24 before being waived again on August 24. The injury to Ronald Blair opened up the spot for the 49ers to sign Moore again on Tuesday.

Moore, of course, started his career with the Giants in 2013 and played for them for nearly three seasons before being cut on December 15 due to violating team rules after an apparent altercation with fellow defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins.

Since then, Moore had brief stints with the Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders, Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys prior to playing in the AAF.

On top of the conduct issues with the Giants, Moore has also faced suspension due to violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy during his time with Dallas. The 49ers have had Moore on and off their roster twice in the calendar year, so they are likely familiar with the 27-year-old defensive end.

49ers sign familiar DE, place Ronald Blair on IR

The 49ers lost Ronald Blair for the season, so they turned to a familiar face at defensive end.

The 49ers were bit hard by the injury bug Monday night, but the biggest blow came when defensive end Ronald Blair suffered a torn ACL while taking down Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

Blair on Wednesday was officially placed on injured reserve, and his roster spot was filled with defensive end Damontre Moore.

Moore might sound familiar because of his terrific preseason showing with the 49ers. He had 2.0 sacks in the exhibition slate, but created a ton of pressure in a relatively large sample size.

His big preseason wasn’t enough to land a roster spot though on a deep 49ers defensive line. Losing Blair put the 49ers in a spot where they couldn’t simply add another DL. They had to match Blair’s skill set, and Moore is probably the closest they were going to find on the free agent wire.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters the team wanted Moore on the roster, but couldn’t make it work at a deep defensive end spot. He also said they were fortunate Moore was available after his strong preseason.

“Yeah, definitely with how well of a preseason he had,” Shanahan said when asked if he was surprised Moore was available. “But it’s tough in this league, especially being a veteran when you don’t have practice squad eligibility. I guess it didn’t work out for him, but with the tape he put on, yeah, we were surprised and felt lucky he was still out there.”

Moore has played in 54 games across six NFL seasons. He also spent time in the Alliance of American Football and played well in the now-defunct league. The 27-year-old has 10-career sacks, although 9.5 of them came in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Replacing Blair won’t be easy. He’s a very smart, productive player in the 49ers defensive line rotation. Blair had 3.0 sacks and seven tackles for loss before sustaining his season-ending knee injury.

Moore will get a chance to debut for the 49ers on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.
