Four-star EDGE Damon Wilson announces top five schools

Wilson is the No. 5 edge prospect in the country for 2023. He recorded 90 tackles, 23 TFL and 15 sacks as a junior.

The Longhorns continue to keep their momentum rolling on the recruiting trail for the 2023 class.

Following the commitment of five-star quarterback Arch Manning, Texas added nearly a dozen recruits to their 2023 class. The group is currently rated the No. 4 class in the country, and there’s a realistic chance the Horns could finish within the top three when it’s all said and done.

Although Texas hasn’t landed a commitment over the last week, they’ve emerged on over a handful of top schools list. Derion Gullette, Braylan Shelby, Jalen Hale and Vysen Lang are a few prospects to include the Longhorns in their top schools recently.

That trend continued on Wednesday evening with four-star edge Damon Wilson announcing his top five schools. Wilson is rated the No. 5 edge in the country for the 2023 recruiting class and the No. 5 overall prospect in the state of Florida, according to On3.

As a junior in 2021, Wilson recorded 90 tackles, 23 tackles for loss and 15 sacks.

Here’s a look at the final five schools in Wilson’s recruitment.

Tide listed in top five for 2023 edge rusher from Florida

Alabama is in good position to land 2023 four-star edge rusher Damon Wilson.

Edge rushers are typically key contributors to a team’s defense, especially at Alabama. Will Anderson Jr., Dallas Turner and Chris Braswell are just a select few of the talented edge rushers that the Crimson Tide coaching staff has landed over the years.

On Wednesday, 2023 edge rusher from Florida, Damon Wilson, listed the Crimson Tide as one of his top-five schools.

During his junior season at Venice High School, he recorded 90 tackles, 23 tackles for loss and 15 sacks. If there is one position that the coaching staff prioritizes every year, it’s the edge rusher.

Nick Saban and Alabama have dominated the competition both on the field and on the recruiting trail for more than a decade. After all, recruiting is the lifeblood of college football and nobody has done it better than Saban. The on-the-field success is a product of Saban’s ability to draw in some of the nation’s top talent.

Now that the 2022 class is wrapped up, Saban and his staff have shifted their focus to the class of 2023. Here at Roll Tide Wire, we are in the middle of a series of stories listing who Alabama has offered at each position for the class of 2023. Already completed are the quarterbacks, running backs, tight ends, cornerbacks, safeties, and wide receivers that Alabama has offered in the class of 2023.

Today, we are going to take a look at the EDGE defenders.

Top 100 edge rusher is getting familiar with the Florida football

Florida’s recruiting staff is getting in the mix for in-state four-star edge rusher Damon Wilson.

The list of 2023 edge rushers being targeted by Florida continues to grow as Venice, Florida, four-star Damon Wilson becomes the latest in-state recruit to develop a relationship with Orange and Blue.

Wilson has heard from the Gators more often in recent weeks, according to a report from 247Sports’ Blake Alderman. Defensive coordinator Patrick Toney has checked in a handful of times, but outside linebackers coach Mike Peterson and defensive analyst Jamar Chaney have been his main contacts at Florida.

Although he’s never visited UF, Wilson is well aware of what the expectations are in Gainesville being an in-state recruit.

“They are a pretty good program,” he said. “They were playing for national championships a couple of years back. They have always been a pretty good team. They had that end, Zachary Carter, who was in the combine this year. They are just a good program.”

Florida and Miami are the first two stops Wilson is considering taking. Many of his offers are from out west or up north, so he wants to see what the local programs have to offer before loading up his schedule.

Alabama, Clemson, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee and USC are just some of the schools he plans on taking a look at, so Billy Napier has his work cut out for him. Fortunately, Wilson says he’s nowhere near naming any leaders and that his recruitment is really just getting started. He plans to take official visits in the fall which typically means a winter decision.

Wilson is the No. 79 overall recruit in the class of 2023 on the 247Sports composite. He’s also ranked No. 7 among edge rushers in his class.

Dabo Swinney was spotted on the recruiting trail in the Sunshine State Thursday.

Clemson’s head coach made his first stop Venice (Fla.) High School. Swinney met with the head coach of four-star defensive end Damon Wilson, who Clemson has a great deal of interest in.

Wilson picked up a Clemson offer on June 1, 2021.

He ranks as the No. 8 edge rusher and No. 103 overall prospect nationally in the 2023 recruiting class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

This afternoon, Swinney was joined by his top offensive lieutenants in offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter and running backs coach C.J. Spiller, as the trio stopped by Lehigh Senior High School (Lehigh Acres, Fla.).

Lehigh Senior, of course, is the home of the nation’s No. 1 running back in the 2023 recruiting class, Richard Young.

Young (5-11, 200) is ranked as the No. 1 running back and No. 17 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Young took an unofficial visit to Clemson back on June 25 and received a scholarship offer the very same day. The Tigers have offered just two running backs in the 2023 class — Young and Blessed Trinity Catholic (Roswell, Ga.) four-star Justice Haynes.

Later Thursday, Swinney, along with Streeter and receivers coach Tyler Grisham, stopped by the high school of Clemson’s lone commitment in the 2023 recruiting class.

Edison (Miami, Fla.) four-star receiver Nathaniel Joseph has been committed to the Tigers since September. Joseph (5-8, 170) is ranked as the No. 14 wide receiver and No. 121 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per 247Sports.
