Prediction

Mavericks 119, Spurs 112

Moneyline (ML)

AVOID. Dallas (-167) is dealing with numerous injuries, but the main one is Doncic, who leads the Mavs with 28.5 points per game. If he plays, the Mavs are a lock to win. If he sits, this could go either way, but I’m PASSING on a moneyline play either way.

New to sports betting? Every $1.67 wagered on the Mavs’ ML would profit $1 if they win, while every $1 wagered on the Spurs ML (+140) would profit $1.40 if the Spurs prevail.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

If Doncic plays, the MAVERICKS (-3.5, –115) are the STRONGEST PLAY. The Mavs are 13-3 against the spread in their last 16 trips to San Antonio. Plus, the Spurs are currently on an 0-7 ATS run versus anyone.

Want more? Dallas is 20-9-2 ATS on the road this season and 12-4-1 ATS as a road dog.

Every $1.10 wagered on the Mavericks’ spread will profit $1 if they win by 4 or more points, but make sure Doncic is in the lineup!

Over/Under (O/U)

Because of all the injuries, the OVER 227.5 (-110) is only a small-unit play. The Mavericks rank third in scoring at 116.5 PPG and own the NBA’s second-best O/U record at 40-25. The Spurs are the No. 1 Over team at 38-23-1.

Former Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones suffered a lower-body injury late in the fourth quarter against Houston as he was driving Dallas down the field with less than three minutes to play.

Clearly in pain, Jones left the field and was shown with a heavy wrap around his left knee, the knee he already wears a brace on.

An emotional Jones was shown on the sideline in tears being consoled by teammates and coaches as the Renegades turned the ball over inside the Roughnecks five-yard line.

The first matchup between the two Texas XFL teams was not a good showing for Jones. With three interceptions early, Jones composed himself to bring the Renegades to within a possession when he suffered his injury.

Jones was 25-for-38 (66%) for 205 yards and a touchdown aside from his three turnovers.

Missing Dallas’ season opener due to an injury suffered in the offseason, Jones was under center for the Renegades in Week 2 and Week 3, winning both games for Dallas, bringing them to 2-1 coming into Week 4.

It is undetermined how long Jones will be out but by his reaction, it seems as though his season could be over.

Marquese Chriss logs another impressive game in chase for Warriors’ future starting center spot

Marquese Chriss registered a double-double against the Sacramento Kings in only 25 minutes.

Even with a healthy Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, the Golden State Warriors are still missing a true starting center. However, the arrival of Marquese Chriss might fill that opening.

The 2019-20 season has been filled with ups and downs for Chriss. He was signed during training camp and later waived midway through the season when the team needed to open a roster spot for Damion Lee.

The Washington Husky product was later brought back to Golden State on a two-way contract and is now on his way to being the Warriors’ starting center of the future.

The former lottery pick was held out against the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday with a calf injury, but was able to suit up against his hometown team.

The Sacramento native tallied 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field while grabbing 10 rebounds. Against the Sacramento Kings, Chriss logged his second game scoring over 20 points with Golden State. Chriss recorded his fifth double-double of the season in only 25 minutes against the Kings.

After the Warriors 112-94 loss to their Northern California rival, Steve Kerr praised the performance of Chriss against the Kings.

Via Golden State Warriors Soundcloud:

I thought Marquese was great again. He’s strung together a really good couple of months here for us. He’s playing with a lot of energy and confidence; he was great again tonight.

Golden State trading Willie Cauley-Stein to the Dallas Mavericks prior to the NBA trade deadline opened an opportunity for Chriss, and he’s taken advantage. Since the trade, Chriss has started 11 games and is averaging 14.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest.

The 22-year-old center’s number could rise once Curry returns from injury. The former two-time Most Valuable Player has a knack for pulling defenders his way, opening up space underneath for the athletic ability of Chriss to shine.

If Curry can return by his target date of March 1, the new center-point guard duo will have 22 games to build chemistry into the offseason. How the two play in the final stretch of games will play a role in the candidacy for Chriss to win the Warriors starting center spot next season.

Prediction

Mavericks 116, Magic 109

Moneyline (ML)

PASS. The Mavericks (-176) are one of the league’s best road teams, posting a 17-8 record – plus, they’re 1-0 on a neutral floor. The Magic (+145) are just two games over .500 at home at 15-13. I like Dallas here, but I’m going to PASS and back the spread below.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The MAVERICKS (-3.5, –115) are the STRONGEST PLAY despite the fact that the home team has won the last 10 in this series. Doncic (28.9 PPG, 9.5 RPG) and Co. are an impressive 9-3-1 ATS as a road favorite this season, while the Magic (+3.5, -106) are 2-8-1 as a home ‘dog.

New to sports betting? Every $1.15 wagered on the Mavs spread will profit $1 if they win by four or more points.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 218.5 (-115) is the play. The Mavericks, who rank third in scoring at 116.4 PPG, own the NBA’s top O/U record at 35-20. They played six Overs in a row heading into All-Star Weekend. However, the Magic rank 29th in scoring at 103.9 PPG and feature the league’s No. 1 defense, holding opponents to 105.4 PPG. But I like the OVER here as both teams will be well-rested coming out of the break.

Every $1.15 wagered on the Over will profit $1 if both teams combine for 219 points or more.

Landry Jones set to make XFL debut for Bob Stoops, Dallas Renegades

The greatest statistical quarterback in Oklahoma history will make his XFL this weekend.

The greatest statistical quarterback in Oklahoma history will make his XFL this weekend.

Landry Jones gets the nod to start by coach Bob Stoops after being benched Week 1 as Jones was coming off a preseason knee injury, limiting his reps. Jones was cleared to play last week but Stoops decided to go with former East Carolina quarterback Philip Nelson to open the season.

Jones and Stoops were together at Oklahoma from 2009 to 2012. In 45 games Jones racked up 16,646 yards passing, 123 touchdowns, and a career quarterback rating of 141.5 while only throwing 52 career interceptions and a 63.6% completion rate.

Jones was a fourth-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, starting five games in place of an injured Ben Roethlisberger over his five seasons with the Steelers. Following his tenure in Pittsburgh, Jones had short stints in Jacksonville and Oakland before becoming the first signee in XFL history.

The Dallas Renegades travel to Los Angeles to take on the LA Wildcats on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. CT and can be found on ABC.

Big 12 Baseball Tournament Moving Location in 2022

Since 1997, the Big 12 baseball tournament has been hosted in OKC in all but three years. Beginning in 2022, it will be at Globe Life Field.

Since the creation of the Big 12 baseball tournament in 1997, it has been hosted in Oklahoma City in all but three years. While it will remain that way until 2021, beginning in the 2022 season, it will be in a new location.

It will now be held in the brand new Globe Life Field, the future home of the Texas Rangers. The ballpark is not officially open, as the first games will be held in late March for the Rangers.

This is not the first time the tournament has been held in Arlington, as the 2002 and 2004 tournament was also held in what was then The Ballpark in Arlington. The Longhorns won the tournament in 2002, winning three games in a row after losing their opener against Texas A&M. Outfielder Dustin Majewski was the tournament MVP for Texas.

The last time it was held outside of Oklahoma City was in 2015 when it was moved to Tulsa. The Longhorns also won the tournament that year, making them champions of two out of the three Big 12 tournaments held outside of Oklahoma City.

Hopefully, that tradition continues as it will be held in the Dallas Fort Worth Area for the foreseeable future, beginning in 2022.

Updated Warriors 2020 draft picks after Willie Cauley-Stein trade

The Warriors added a second-round draft pick for 2020 when they traded Willie Cauley-Stein to the Dallas Mavericks.

The Warriors kicked off the 2020 NBA trade season with a move that landed Willie Cauley-Stein in Dallas, netting Golden State a 2020 second-round pick in return. Prior to the Cauley-Stein trade, the Warriors did not own a second-round pick in 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2026.

Cauley-Stein’s gives Golden State more flexibility with their roster, opening up a spot in the lineup, but also gives the Warriors an extra pick in the 2020 NBA draft.

Golden State’s first-round pick in 2020 will be sent to the Brooklyn Nets, but is protected if the pick lands in the top-20. Fortunately for Golden State, their record is buried deep down in the Western Conference, limiting the chances of their first-round pick being dealt back to Brooklyn.

Below is an updated look at the Golden State Warriors picks for the 2020 NBA draft following the Cauley-Stein trade to Dallas according to Real GM.

  • Golden State’s 2020 1st round pick to Brooklyn (protected for picks 1-20; turns into 2025 second-round pick if protection triggers)
  • Utah’s 2020 2nd round pick (via Dallas in Willie Cauley-Stein trade)
  • Golden State’s 2020 2nd round pick to Sacramento or Dallas

The Warriors draft capital is more critical in 2020 than years past due to the transition Golden State’s roster is under. Kevin Durant’s departure to Brooklyn, plus injuries to Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, has opened deep holes that’s resulted in the Warriors hanging at the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

It’ll be essential for Bob Myers, Steve Kerr and Joe Lacob to find players that can bridge the gap between the “Splash Brothers” era and the imminent future. The Warriors challenge to build their future core starts in the 2020 NBA draft.

Jerry Jones needs to decide if winning is more important than his ego

The Cowboys are reportedly moving on from head coach Jason Garrett. Will Jerry Jones finally cede some control, or is control what matters?

On Thursday night reports broke that Jerry Jones and the Cowboys may be moving on from head coach Jason Garrett after nine years.

For a team stuck in the mire of NFL mediocrity, it seems like a no-brainer decision. The Cowboys have under-performed under Garrett. It’s time for the team to move on.

What will be more interesting to me is what happens next. Will Jerry Jones bring in an exciting coach who can change the organization? Will Jones finally cede some control, and allow a strong voice to come in and build the team and culture?

For most owners, they want to bring in smart people who can run a great NFL franchise. For Jones, who also acts as the Cowboys’ general manager, I’m not sure that’s the most important thing. Maybe he’d rather the team be a middling NFL franchise, one who can make the playoffs every few years and compete in a meh decision, as long as he gets to call all the shots. That honestly might be what matters most to him.

I’m not judging him for it. In his head, I’m sure he believes that he’s the person who can give the team the best chance to succeed. But as his ridiculous “negotiations” with Ezekiel Elliott showed — in which he publicly bashed Elliott then gave him the contract he wanted anyway — Jones might not be as good at all this as he thinks he is.

That’s not to say he’s totally inept. As in-over-his-head as he may appear to be at times, he’s built some talented rosters over the years.

And, more importantly, this is what he loves doing. Other owners sign checks — Jerry runs things. He adores building the team, scouting the players, negotiating. This is what brings him joy.

Call it ego, call it following his passion. Call it it’s his money and he can damn well do what he pleases with it. Whatever it is, this is what he wants to do.

The only problem with Jones’ approach is it leaves him vulnerable to hiring Yes Men who won’t interfere with his decision making.

EPA Photo

It’s an open secret in Dallas, one that even Troy Aikman is talking about now, that Jones refuses to cede total control of the team to the head coach. This all apparently stems back to how the Cowboys operated under Jimmy Johnson, where Johnson insisted on being the lone voice in the locker room and maintaining a higher level of control of the team.

The Cowboys won that way. They won a ton that way. But Johnson became a legend in his own right. And Jones had to cede a bit of control, and a bit of the limelight, in the process.

For Jones, maybe having that control and that limelight is more important than winning. It’s his money, it’s his organization, it’s his stadium. Sure, he could hire an exciting young coach and forward-thinking GM and turn the team over to them. Maybe it would work, and they’d win a Super Bowl.

But it wouldn’t be Jerry’s team anymore. Not really. And maybe, to him, that’s really the only thing that matters.
