The Boston Celtics announced their signing of point guard Dalano Banton though the details of the contract were not disclosed, as is Boston’s practice. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported the deal is for the minimum over two seasons with the second season not guaranteed. Banton, who stands 6 feet, 9 inches and weighs 204 pounds, played in 31 games for the Toronto Raptors this past season.

The Canadian floor general put up 4.6 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 9 minutes per game with Toronto. With the Raptors 905 at the G League level, he averaged 24.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 1.4 steals and 33.6 minutes per game.

He played college basketball for Nebraska, where he was the first player since 1974 to lead the Huskers in both rebounding and assists.

Banton, a native of Toronto, was drafted by the Raptors as the 46th overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft, making him the first Canadian player chosen by the Raptors in that draft.

Do the Boston Celtics need to do more to get better?

Does Boston need to make moves to prevent an offseason of lateral moves — or worse — this offseason?

The Boston Celtics lost their Las Vegas Summer League opener to the Miami Heat 99-88 and introduced recently-signed reserve forward Oshae Brissett. The ball club also elected to sit point guard Dalano Banton after it was revealed that the 6-foot-9 floor general was dealing with a minor injury during their first day in Las Vegas.

Are the Celtics a better team after the Marcus Smart and Grant Williams trades coupled with lesser moves like these and Summer Celtics darling Jordan Walsh? Or do they need to make moves to prevent an offseason of burning assets and breaking relationships to merely make a lateral move — or worse — this offseason?

CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning and Gary Washburn debated those offseason moves, what more Boston can do, and whether or not the Celtics enter next season better than they were a year ago in a recent short we have embedded below.

Fans of the Boston Celtics who were hoping to get an idea about how new Celtics reserve floor general Dalano Banton might fit into Boston’s new-look roster this season in the NBA’s 2023 Las Vegas Summer League will evidently be getting their wish.

The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach reports the 6-foot-9 floor general will, in fact, join the Sin City Celtics‘ roster in Nevada this summer, adding a bit of extra spice to a roster that is to include Celtics floor general JD Davison, Hungarian forward Vincent Valerio-Bodon, 7-foot swingman Reggie Kissoonlal, and several other prospects looking to play their way onto a roster, even if it doesn’t end up being Boston’s.

There had been some speculation the former Raptors guard might sit out summer league given his status as a member of the team’s full roster, but the franchise is likely looking at the opportunity as a chance to help get the Canadian guard better acclimated with the team’s staff and plans for him.

The best of new Boston Celtics point guard Dalano Banton in 2022-23

The Toronto native put up 4.6 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per contest last season.

It’s hard not to get excited about a floor general standing 6 feet, 9 inches, which is probably what got the Boston Celtics excited about signing former Toronto Raptors reserve point guard Dalano Banton. The 23-year-old Canadian has a fair amount of potential on the offensive end of the court, and he has already shown his value as a defensive option in the backcourt.

The Toronto native averaged 4.6 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per contest this past season. He shot 42.3% from the floor overall, an improving 29.4% from beyond the arc, and a solid 70.8% from the free-throw line in 9 minutes per game with the Raptors in the 2022-23 season.

To see the best of his play with Toronto last season, take a look at the clip embedded below put together by fan-favorite Celtics videographer Tomasz Kordylewski via his official YouTube channel.

How does Dalano Banton fit with the Boston Celtics?

He is reportedly signed with Boston for a total of two years, with a second year having been carved out as a team option.

The Boston Celtics have signed unrestricted free agent Dalano Banton away from the Toronto Raptors. Reports early in the NBA’s 2023 free agency period first tied the Canadian guard to the Celtics.

Banton should provide point guard depth behind likely starter Derrick White, 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon and reserve guard Payton Pritchard. He has the ability to play shooting guard.

He is reportedly signed with Boston for two seasons, with a second being a team option to offer the Celtics security in case the move does not pan out.

CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning put together a clip that breaks down Banton as a player and what’s next for the Celtics after this latest piece of business.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what he has to say about Boston’s newest floor general.

Who is Dalano Banton, new Boston Celtics point guard?

Banton averaged 20.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per game at the G League level.

For fans of the Boston Celtics who want to know more about their new reserve point guard Dalano Banton, Spotrac’s Keith Smith wrote up a mini-profile of the former Toronto Raptors floor general.

Banton is huge for the point guard position, as he stands 6-foot-9,” Smith wrote.

“His statistical profile isn’t going to jump out at anyone, especially from last season,” the Spotrac analyst continued. “But Banton can play. He needs to shoot the ball more consistently to make it as a rotation player, but the rest of his game is pretty solid. His G League numbers, albeit only over 21 games, show how solid Banton is all-around.”

“That’s worth taking a shot on for your third point guard with some upside,” he concludes, and we would have to agree.

While he was brought on to play at the NBA level for Boston, don’t be surprised if he continues to have stints with the Maine Red Claws to continue getting in development reps. In the G League, he has averaged 20.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting a promising 39.3% from deep with the Raptors 305 in 2022-23.

Shams: Boston Celtics to sign point guard Dalano Banton to two-year deal

The Boston Celtics’ roster for their 2023-24 campaign just took another step in the direction of completion.

The Boston Celtics‘ roster for their 2023-24 campaign took another step closer to completion based on new reporting from The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Per The Athletic reporter, “(f)ree agent point guard Dalano Banton has agreed to a two-year contract with the … Celtics.”

Banton had been tied to Boston at the start of the NBA’s 2023 free agency period. The move perhaps signals a direction the Celtics are taking in terms of team building. The move to sign the former Toronto Raptors reserve point guard is perhaps most notable due to Banton’s size (6 feet, 9 inches).

The Canadian floor general has not put it together at the NBA level, averaging 4.6 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game with the Raptors last season while shooting 42.3% overall, 29.4% from 3 and 70.8% from the line.

Per the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, the second year on the deal is a team option and will be for the veteran’s minimum according to MassLive’s Brian Robb.

Report: Boston Celtics have met with free agent guard Dalano Banton

Banton’s height stands out as the primary attraction as the rest of such a signing would be an upside play.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

While it might not involve free-agency fireworks, more reporting about the Boston Celtics’ focus during the start of the NBA’s 2023 free-agency period has come to light courtesy of NBA Big Board’s Rafael Barlow.

Per Barlow, the Celtics have met with former Toronto Raptors point guard Dalano Banton, who is an unrestricted free agent. Banton is a 23-year-old, 6-foot-9 floor general who played two seasons in a deep reserve role for the Raptors. The Celtics’ interest in him signals a potential need in the backcourt that may presage moves the Celtics are working to finalize.

Banton’s height stands out as the primary attraction. Otherwise, such a signing would be an upside play given the Canadian point guard averaged 4.6 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game with Toronto last season in 9 minutes of floor time while shooting 42.3% overall, 29.4% from 3 and 70.8% from the line.
