Jabril Cox, Isaiah Land among cut Cowboys signed by new teams

From @ToddBrock24f7: Cox goes to the Commanders; Land makes the Colts’ 53-man roster. WR Dennis Houston will suit up for the Giants’ practice squad.

Tuesday was a day for letting go of talent for NFL teams; Wednesday is a day for getting some back in the building as practice squads are assembled.

As expected, several players cut by the Cowboys yesterday have been snatched up by other clubs, including at least one promising rookie the team had very much hoped to re-sign for further in-house development.

From the first wave of new signings around the league, here are three now-former Cowboys who will be sporting enemy colors the next time they step on a football field.

Saints bring back veteran safety Johnathan Abram on their practice squad

The Saints brought back veteran safety Johnathan Abram to their practice squad, adding valuable depth for the 2023 season:

The New Orleans Saints were able to bring veteran safety Johnathan Abram back to their practice squad on Wednesday, having initially released him during a wave of roster cuts at Tuesday’s NFL deadline.

Abram was teammates with Derek Carr on the Raiders, and he added a valuable leadership element to the secondary over the summer as a veteran player who has seen it all. He’s a former first-round pick out of Mississippi State who has appeared in 44 games in the NFL, including the playoffs.

He’ll be backing up the crowd of safeties on the 53-man roster including Tyrann Mathieu, Marcus Maye, J.T. Gray, Jordan Howden, Lonnie Johnson Jr., and Ugo Amadi. Maye could be suspended at some point this season after settling his Florida DUI court case, so Abram’s services might be needed sooner rather than later.

Dwayne Johnson shouts out Saints punter Lou Hedley after making the team

Dwayne Johnson shouts out Saints rookie Lou Hedley after winning the punting job: ‘Rooting for this guy to make it’

Lou Hedley was a surprise entry on the New Orleans Saints’ initial 53-man roster, having won the punting job from a younger incumbent in Blake Gillikin. The 30-year-old rookie has one of the best stories in the NFL this year, and he already has a robust fanbase.

And a couple of celebrities are in that number, including Dwayne Johnson. Hedley’s accomplishment earned words of support from “The Rock” himself. Hedley first got on Johnson’s radar after picking the entertainer’s jersey number when he arrived at Miami, their shared alma mater. That’s an impressive fan to have in his corner. Hopefully it helps him find more success after turning pro.

7 recently-cut players the Saints should consider adding

7 recently-released players the New Orleans Saints should consider adding after NFL roster cuts deadline

The NFL roster cuts deadline has come and gone, and now teams are busy working the phones recruiting players for their practice squads. So who could be a good fit for the New Orleans Saints?

Odds are strong that the Saints will focus on reuniting with many of the players they let go during roster cuts, but they always seem to add one or two players from other teams. Here are six candidates who could fit what they’re looking for:

Who made the Chiefs’ 53-man roster after Tuesday’s cuts?

Check out all of the #Chiefs players who are still on Kansas City’s roster after Tuesday’s cuts:

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to be among the NFL’s best teams next season as they look to defend their Super Bowl LVII title in 2023. After a successful training camp and preseason, the Chiefs had to make some difficult decisions on Tuesday when they cut their roster from 90 players down to just 53.

Several fan favorites from their time at Missouri Western State University got the ax in the mass parting of ways, though some may find their way back to Kansas City’s practice squad in the coming days.

Despite the loss of promising talent, the Chiefs are still in a position to succeed in the regular season with the excellent 53-man roster they assembled after Tuesday’s cuts. Patrick Mahomes is still under center, Travis Kelce didn’t go anywhere, and despite Chris Jones’ continued absence, Kansas City’s defense still looks fierce on paper.

Check out every player that made the Chiefs 53-man roster after cuts were reported on Tuesday:

Chiefs waived 2022 fifth-round pick Darian Kinnard on Tuesday

The #Chiefs waived 2022 fifth-round pick Darian Kinnard on Tuesday as they cut their roster to 53 players.

The Kansas City Chiefs waived second-year offensive lineman Darian Kinnard on Tuesday.

The Chiefs opted to keep 10 other offensive linemen as they trimmed the roster down to 53 players. Kinnard barely missed the cut despite the team spending a fifth-round draft pick on him one year ago. Kinnard made the Chiefs’ roster in 2022 but appeared in just one game, earning six snaps on special teams.

Kinnard, a 6-foot-5, 322-pounder out of Kentucky, was always sort of a project for the Chiefs as the team attempted to use him at right tackle early on. Kinnard was projected as more of a guard coming out of college, and his struggles at the tackle position in the pros suggest that those projections may have been correct.

Even with the release, the Kinnard project likely remains unfinished. Plenty of raw talent remains, so Kinnard will probably find his way on the Chiefs’ practice squad if another team doesn’t claim him off waivers.

Chiefs waived third-year DB Dicaprio Bootle on Tuesday

Defensive back Dicaprio Bootle was waived by the #Chiefs on Tuesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs waived cornerback Dicaprio Bootle in an effort to get down to the NFL-mandated 53-man roster.

Bootle, a third-year defensive back who joined the team as an undrafted free agent in 2021, was fighting to earn a spot on the back end of the Chiefs’ CB squad. Some expected Kansas City to keep six corners on the roster, but the team ultimately kept five.

So what’s next for Bootle? First, he’ll go through waivers, giving the other 31 NFL teams an option to claim him and add him to their roster. If Bootle clears waivers, he’ll likely end up on the Chiefs’ practice squad where he’s no stranger to spending time.

The 25-year-old Nebraska product has bounced between the Chiefs’ roster and practice squad many times over the past two seasons. He’s appeared on the team’s roster eight times, playing in seven games, and tallying 11 tackles. The majority of Bootle’s time has been spent on special teams, where he excels as a gunner on punt coverage.

Broncos announce initial 53-man roster for 2023 season

The Broncos have set their (initial) 53-man roster for the 2023 season!

After making 40 roster moves over the last 48 hours, the Denver Broncos have finalized an (initial) 53-man roster for the 2023 NFL season.

It must be noted that this is not the final 53-man roster. Every team across the league parted ways with dozens players this week, and some of those players will be claimed off waivers.

Denver will also likely bring back a few players who were cut in procedural moves on Tuesday after players go on injured reserve tomorrow.

If the Broncos claim a player off waivers on Wednesday, they will have to make a corresponding roster move to make room for the new addition. So, a few more additions (and cuts) could be on the way in the coming days.

For now, though, here is a look at Denver’s initial 53-man roster.

Broncos cut several players immediately after Tuesday’s practice

The NFL can be a brutal business.

The NFL can be a brutal business.

NFL teams were required to reduce their rosters from 90 players down to 53 players by 2 p.m. MT on Tuesday. The Denver Broncos scheduled a practice for noon and post-practice press conferences for coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton for right after practice just before the cutdown deadline.

So, players who attended Tuesday’s practice might have reasonably assumed if they made it to practice, they made it to the 53-man roster.

That wasn’t the case.

Immediately after practice, Denver cut defensive lineman Tomasi Laulile and wide receiver Michael Bandy, according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson. Both players were on the field just minutes before being cut.

Such is life in the NFL.

Fortunately for Bandy and Laulile, both players will likely be candidates to return on the practice squad if they clear waivers on Wednesday.

We are tracking all of the Broncos’ roster cuts on this page.
