Broncos cut CB De’Vante Bausby

The Broncos waived cornerback DeVante Bausby.

The Denver Broncos have waived cornerback De’Vante Bausby, according to a report from The Denver Post‘s Ryan O’Halloran. If he clears waivers, Bausby would be eligible to sign with the practice squad.

Bausby (6-2, 190 pounds) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Pittsburg State with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015. He went on to spend time with the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles before a stint in the Alliance of American Football with the San Antonio Commanders last year.

Denver signed Bausby spring and he won significant playing time before suffering a season-ending neck injury. Bausby was competing for the Broncos’ No. 3 cornerback job this offseason and it’s a bit of a surprise to see him let go.

After trading away Isaac Yiadom and waiving Bausby, Denver might be settling on a six-man cornerback room of A.J. Bouye, Bryce Callahan, Davontae Harris, Michael Ojemudia, Duke Dawson and Essang Bassey.

We are tracking all of the Broncos’ roster moves on this page.

Roster Moves: Washington cuts WR Darvin Kidsy, signs WR Tony Brown

Washington made a couple of roster moves on Monday, cutting ties with WR Darvin Kidsy and bringing in rookie WR Tony Brown.

The Washington Football Team cut ties with WR Darvin Kidsy on Monday morning, ending his three year stint with the team. In his place, Washington decided to pick up WR Tony Brown, a rookie who went undrafted and was released by the Cleveland Browns earlier this summer.

Brown is a former member of the Colorado Buffs, and he played with Washington QB Steven Montez in college. During his senior year, Brown tied for the team lead with 56 receptions, while recording 707 yards and five touchdowns along the way. He also earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors for his performance in 2019, and at one point came down with this impressive toe-tap touchdown last season.

For Kidsy, it was likely going to be a long-shot for him to make the roster cut in Washington once again this season. In his two years with the team, he’s appeared in only 5 games with a total of one reception for eight yards.

What would ex-Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette offer to the Saints?

The Jacksonville Jaguars waived former LSU Tigers running back Leonard Fournette, but should the New Orleans Saints be interested in him?

[jwplayer af2CoE9C-ThvAeFxT]

The 2017 NFL Draft class took a big hit on Monday when the Jacksonville Jaguars waived running back Leonard Fourne tte, their former fourth overall pick. Fournette, 25 years old and listed at 6-foot-0, 228 pounds, gained a career-high 1,674 yards from scrimmage in 2019 but didn’t figure into Jacksonville’s plans moving forwards. Between unproductive stretches and clashes with Jaguars coaches and front office, they figured it was time to move on.

So would he fit with the New Orleans Saints? That’s the question on the minds of many LSU Tigers faithful who share their fandom with the black and gold. Fournette was a monstrous talent at the college level during his time in Baton Rouge, and hometown heroes like him (a New Orleans native who starred at St. Augustine High School) are easy to cheer for.

Unfortunately, it’s tough to see how Fournette would get on the field in New Orleans. He’s not going to take snaps away from Alvin Kamara, and Latavius Murray has a similar skills set with a broader body of work. That means Fournette would have to outplay Dwayne Washington on special teams (where he’s logged just four snaps in 36 regular season games) or bring some of the same versatility that Ty Montgomery has flashed in training camp. While Fournette made real growth as a receiver last year (catching 76 passes), his athletic profile and game tape is not going to be confused for Montgomery’s.

One of the players the Jaguars are giving a shot instead of Fournette is Devine Ozigbo, a second-year pro who impressed in Saints training camp last year. So if former Saints roster cuts are getting looks over Fournette, how much does he really have to add?

Fournette is going to test the waiver wire, and it’ll be curious to see which teams submit claims. Maybe the Saints will be one of the interested parties. Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said Monday morning that his team wasn’t able to garner any trade interest in Fournette before releasing him. Marrone sprung off of Sean Payton’s coaching tree way back when, so you’d think the Saints would have an inside track on the situation.

There’s an argument that he could be a better fit on the practice squad than undrafted rookie Tony Jones Jr., sure (due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teams are allowed to add multiple veteran players to the expanded practice squad). And he would definitely enjoy better production behind a strong Saints offensive line versus the patchwork Jaguars outfit. But he would still be the fourth- or fifth-ranked running back on the Saints depth chart, and it’s hard to get excited about someone who is such a long shot to get on the field.

Still, keep an eye out for when the waiver wire updates. Teams have a week to evaluate players during the final leg of training camp, and the Saints have given a lot of attention to the fringe of their depth chart before. It shouldn’t shock anyone if they do take a flier on Fournette, but fans should be careful to temper their expectations.

Kemah Siverand tweets apology after being cut by Seahawks over hotel incident

Former Seattle Seahawks defensive back Kemah Siverand tweeted an apology after he was cut from the team last week for violating the rules.

Kemah Siverand has finally spoken out after he was released by the Seattle Seahawks nearly two weeks ago for reportedly attempting to sneak a woman into the team hotel, dressed in team apparel.

The undrafted rookie cornerback tweeted an apology on Monday, which reads in part:

“After taking time to reflect and really consider the seriousness of my actions, I have tried to find the appropriate words to apologize to all of those affected by my poor decision and immaturity. I’ve privately apologized to Coach [Pete] Carroll, [general manager] John Schneider, and the Seahawks organization. I violated team rules, which would have been unacceptable in normal times, but absolutely inexcusable now during a pandemic. I understand my lapse in judgment put my teammates and the organization at risk, thankfully no one else was affected by my actions.”

Siverand said he plans to continue training and hopes to someday realize his dream of playing in the NFL.

Pete Carroll reflects on ‘bad state’ of former Seahawk Earl Thomas

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll wished his former player, Earl Thomas, the best of luck after his dismissal from the Baltimore Ravens.

Former Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas was released by the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday for conduct detrimental to the team. Thomas had been involved in a scuffle with teammate Chuck Clark and had been sent home from training camp practice over the weekend.

Coach Pete Carroll was asked about the situation during his Zoom press conference with reporters on Monday morning.

“It’s been a tough time for Earl,” Carroll said. “That’s a hard situation. I feel bad for him and wish he could have avoided that from happening . . . whatever that was.

“That’s a bad state to get in when they send you home.”

Carroll said Thomas rarely spoke out when he was with the Seahawks and was relatively quiet, mostly keeping to himself. However, it’s no secret Thomas and Seattle parted ways with little love lost.

There are still those hoping for a reunion in Seattle, but all things considered, Thomas will likely be best suited with his third team in three years, instead.

Why Seahawks should not consider a reunion with safety Earl Thomas

Safety Earl Thomas is out after only one season in Baltimore, but this doesn’t mean he should come back to the Seattle Seahawks.

In a stunning turn of events, another big name NFL player will be entering free agency. The Baltimore Ravens have parted ways with former Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas, by releasing him due to conduct detrimental to the organization.

This comes following a Saturday filled with an explosive report from Ravens camp. According to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero, Earl Thomas was sent home from Ravens training camp because Thomas punched teammate and fellow safety Chuck Clark during practice.

From the sounds of it, Thomas’ altercation with Clark was the straw that broke the proverbial backs of Baltimore, as Thomas was apparently a bigger locker room issue than perhaps previously thought. Certainly, a big enough headache for the Ravens to risk swallowing a $15 million dollar cap hit for releasing him only one year into his four-year contract signed last season.

It is quite the fall from grace for a player many consider to be a lock for the Hall of Fame one day. Thomas will now be looking for his third team in as many years, with both departures from Seattle and Baltimore ending in a bitter divorce.

With Thomas a free agent, there are sure to be plenty of 12th men and women who will understandably want to see a reunion between him and the Seahawks. After all, Seattle is where Thomas became a star in the league and one of the franchises best players.

This reunion should not happen, at least not while Thomas is still a player. The time for him as a Seahawk defender is over, and should remain as such for now.

For starters, the Seahawks have invested considerable resources into the safety position to acquire Jamal Adams, Quandre Diggs, as well as drafting players like Marquise Blair and Ugo Amadi. Any remaining salary cap space should promptly go to addressing the defensive line.

More importantly, the Seahawks do not need another malcontent on the roster, and certainly not one who does not regret flipping the bird at his former coach Pete Carroll.

Considering this is the final image of Earl Thomas in a Seahawks uniform, it’s unlikely he would even be open to a reunion himself at this time.

Seahawks cut Kemah Siverand for attempt to sneak woman into team hotel

The Seattle Seahawks waived cornerback Kemah Siverand on Tuesday after his attempt to sneak a female visitor into the team hotel.

The Seattle Seahawks waived rookie cornerback Kemah Siverand on Tuesday, but it now appears there is more to the story than a simple roster move.

“The Seahawks cut rookie CB Kemah Siverand this week after he was caught on video trying to sneak a female visitor into the team hotel, per sources,” NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero tweeted on Thursday. “Clear message on the responsibility everyone has in the NFL’s COVID-19 world: Put the team at risk, suffer the consequences.”

Seattle made no mention of the violation when the public relations account tweeted the transaction or in the press release on the team’s website . . .  and perhaps for good reason.

The woman was wearing Seahawks gear in an attempt to disguise her as a player, I’m told,” Pelissero added in an additional tweet. “It did not work.”

Siverand had signed with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State in May.

Seahawks roster move: Seattle waives rookie cornerback Kemah Siverand

The Seahawks only had one roster move listed on Tuesday’s official transaction wire – Seattle waived rookie cornerback Kemah Siverand.

The Seahawks only had one roster move listed on Tuesday’s official transaction wire. Seattle waived rookie cornerback Kemah Siverand. No corresponding move was noted.

Siverand signed with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State on May 4. For the Cowboys over two seasons, he played in 26 games. Siverand had attended Texas A&M before transferring to Oklahoma State.

After the waiver, the Seahawks now have 76 players on the active roster.

2020 Roster: Cowboys trim RB, DT positions ahead of Covid Deadline

The Cowboys have begin trimming their roster for training camp, releasing a RB and DT.

The Dallas Cowboys, like all 32 NFL franchises, have a new roster cutdown date added to their offseason calendar. After the last several seasons have had teams moving from the 90-man offseason roster to the 53-man regular season version following the final preseason game, Covid-19 has changed this as well as many other aspects of the roster composition.

Now, teams will need to be down to 80 players ahead of the start of training camp practices on August 17. The Cowboys have had 89 players on their roster for the last few months, and as discussed in our roster and practice squad projections, will need to release nine men to get down to the limit. On Tuesday they began the trimming by releasing two players who we identified would likely be in the first wave. RB Jordan Chunn and DT Garrett Marino have been let go, per Clarence Hill Jr of the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram.

Jordan Chunn

As explained in our projection, Chunn is a end-of-roster holdover from the previous regime. There will likely be several of these types of players who will be let go while Mike McCarthy and his staff bring in players they identify as being good fits for the new systems being implemented.

Chunn appeared in just one game in 2019, playing 16 special team snaps. The club signed two undrafted free agents at the position that will be given a chance to compete for the third RB role, if there is one, behind Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Our prediction has South Carolina’ Rico Dowdle as a the leading candidate to make the team, and Darius Anderson from TCU is another consideration.

Garrett Marino

As for Marino, when the rookie work was cancelled he lost his shot to impress a coaching staff at a position with a strong veteran presence. Dallas signed Dontari Poe and Gerald McCoy to start, and has Trysten Hill, Antwaun Woods and Tyrone Crawford to rotate in. The club also spent their third-round pick on Oklahoma stud Neville Gallimore. There was little chance Marino was going to make an impression as the coaching staff still has LaDarius Hamilton and Justin Hamilton in the seventh and eighth spots on the depth chart.

Gators News: July 9, 2020

The number of positive coronavirus cases continues to increase steeply leaving the nation and sports wondering how to move forward.

As we head into the downslope of another week, the number of positive coronavirus cases continues to increase steeply, leaving the nation — much less the sports world — wondering how to take its next steps forward.

Yesterday, the Ivy League announced that it will cancel all fall sports and will not resume athletics no sooner than January 1, 2021. The decision affects football as well as men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, and women’s field hockey and volleyball. Stanford also announced that it is cutting 11 of its 36 varsity sports programs, including field hockey, wrestling and men’s volleyball.

Additionally, Ohio State decided to hit the pause switch on all voluntary workouts after an unconfirmed number of athletes tested positive for COVID-19; the exact number was not released in order to protect the identity of those infected.

Here is the rest of our stories from yesterday.
