Husker linebacker Stefon Thompson enters transfer portal

The Husker linebacker appeared in 11 games in the 2024 regular season, recording 27 tackles, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery.

With the regular season ending and the postseason lingering, some Nebraska players already plan to enter the transfer portal. Linebacker Stefon Thompson joined the group Monday.

Thompson arrived at Nebraska after transferring from the Syracuse Orange last year. He appeared in 11 games in the 2024 regular season, recording 27 tackles, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery.

Prior to Nebraska, he played three seasons with the Orange and missed most of the 2022 season. He averaged over 55 tackles across those three seasons. Thompson now enters the portal along with a few other Nebraska players, including defensive lineman Vincent Jackson.

This comes after it was announced that Nebraska’s defensive coordinator, Tony White, left Nebraska to become the defensive coordinator of the Florida State Seminoles. There is no word on whether or not this affected Thompson’s decision.

Expert score prediction: Nebraska vs. Wisconsin

Who will win on Saturday?

Another week, another attempt to get win number six. Nebraska hosts the Wisconsin Badgers with both teams sitting at 5-5 and signs point to the Huskers defeating the Badgers.

Wisconsin’s got a big disadvantage. They’re on a three-game skid, lost a low-scoring 16-13 battle with No. 1 Oregon, fired its offensive coordinator and are playing in Lincoln on Senior Day.

But this is still Nebraska, a team whose last trip to a bowl game occurred in 2016, a team on a 10-game losing streak against Wisconsin, a team that any opponent would prefer to play in November.

Nebraska’s issues remain the same. Outside of a Ceyair Wright’s pick-six, the Trojans sliced up the Blackshirts secondary. Though some passes found a USC receiver’s hands by luck, others fell right into an open Trojan’s hands.

It also struggled to stop running back Woody Marks, the second running back this year Nebraska fully allowed to get the better of it.

However, the Badgers’ struggles do allow for potential rebound by the Huskers. Along with its offense making a sudden change at play caller, Nebraska’s defense is presented with a chance to hold an opponent to 20 or fewer points for the first time since the first week of October.

Indiana and Ohio State are some of the toughest teams in the nation. UCLA was building momentum, and USC’s quarterback fit more into Lincoln Riley’s system. All played a part in Nebraska’s already struggling defense being pressured further.

Braedyn Locke has been inconsistent this season. His main strength is hitting the deep shot receiver or the quick slant, both of which Nebraska needs to prioritize. However, the run game is just as important, with Tawee Walker averaging 4.8 yards per carry this season.

Locke’s inconsistency lately gives the Blackshirts an opportunity to bounce back properly compared to their previous four quarterbacks. However, Wisconsin’s change in offensive coordinator makes it more unpredictable than ever, which in turn acts more as a disadvantage for the Blackshirts until proven otherwise.

As for Wisconsin’s defense just held No. 1 Oregon to 16 points, its fewest in a game all season. But in Oregon’s defense, it played in Madison under the lights and looked to control the game offensively instead of dominating it.

Holgorsen now has a game under his belt as offensive coordinator for the Huskers and knows more of the offense’s strengths and weaknesses during a game.

But it’s likely going to be another one-score game, and once again, recent history shows a win by Nebraska in November by one-score is more surprising than anything else.

Unfortunately, despite the look, history is most likely going to continue.

Score Prediction: Wisconsin 24, Nebraska 21

All-purpose athlete Jeremiah Jones commits to Nebraska

All-purpose athlete Jeremiah Jones announced on Monday afternoon he is coming to Nebraska.

The Nebraska football team started July off with another three-star commitment. All-purpose athlete Jeremiah Jones announced on Monday afternoon he is coming to Lincoln.

Jones made his commitment following a visit to campus in June, which included a fishing trip with legendary Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne. Jones says he chose Nebraska because of how the Huskers kept strong connections with him throughout the recruiting process.

From Day 1, the effort that they put in to stay in touch with me was crucial. They didn’t just say it, they showed why they believed in me as a player. The whole defensive staff came to see me. They just showed me constant love. Nebraska is where I want to spend my college career and grow as a student-athlete.

Jones is entering his senior year at Murray High School in Murray, Kentucky, following a versatile junior season. The three-star athlete plays both sides of the ball for the Tigers and nearly every core group.

Jones, as a junior, caught 22 passes for 326 yards, completed 54 passes for 643 yards, rushed the ball 62 times for 326 yards, and scored six total touchdowns. On defense, he totaled 140 tackles and seven interceptions over the last two seasons.

Jones is listed at 6-feet-5, 215 pounds. He chose Nebraska over Kentucky, Louisville,, and Florida State. He represents Nebraska’s 14th commitment in its 2025 recruiting class, which is ranked in the top 40 nationally.

Husker alumni Monte Kiffin honored at Pro Football Hall of Fame

Monte Kiffin, father of Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, received the Hall of Fame’s Award of Excellence for his career as a defensive coordinator in the NFL.

A long-time football coach and Husker alum earned a reward from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in late June. Monte Kiffin, father of Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, received the Hall of Fame’s Award of Excellence for his career as a defensive coordinator in the NFL.

Kiffin coached in the NFL from 1983 to 2016, making numerous stops across the league. He is known for his main tenure as defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers between 1996 and 2008.

There, he helped lead the Buccaneers to become a threatening defense that allowed the fewest points per game (17.5) while ranking second in both yards allowed per game (286.8) and total takeaways (293) during his reign.

He helped architect the iconic “Tampa 2” defense that revolutionized the NFL. This defense culminated in the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl XXXVII win, which saw three Tampa Bay pick-sixes. Kiffin’s time with the Buccaneers helped him become a member of Tampa Bay’s Ring of Honor.

Kiffin also coached as the defensive coordinator for Nebraska from 1969 to 1976, helping the Huskers to the 1970 and 1971 national championships. He also played for Nebraska from 1959 to 1963 as a defensive and offensive lineman.
