Giants’ Darren Waller questionable vs. Cowboys

New York Giants TE Darren Waller was added to the injury report on Friday and is questionable against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.

The New York Giants will open their 2023 regular season on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium and will be relatively healthy when they do.

Everyone on the 53-man roster practiced on at least a limited basis this week including wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, who is returning from a torn ACL.

“Same. Everybody’s going, and then we’ll talk about (game designations) tonight,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters on Friday. “I think everybody’s going to be out here today and then we’ll sit here and talk about it tonight.”

There was, however, an unexpected development during practice as tight end Darren Waller was added to the injury report with a hamstring issue. He was limited on Friday.

Meanwhile, down in Arlington, the Cowboys were dealing with their own headaches as two starting offensive linemen — Tyron Smith and Tyler Smith — had injuries pop up this week.

Full injury reports for both the Giants and Cowboys can be found below:

Giants injury report: Cor’Dale Flott, Wan’Dale Robinson remain limited

The New York Giants were off on Thursday but released a projected injury report that didn’t change from the day prior.

The New York Giants gave the players a day off on Thursday which meant there was no practice. And while some players were at the facility, there was no on-field activity.

Accordingly, the Giants were forced to project their second injury report of the week and as a result, there were no official changes to a player’s status.

Cornerback Cor’Dale Flott and wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson remain “limited.” Their status for Sunday night is 50-50.

The Giants’ (projected) Thursday injury report can be found below:

Giants injury report: Wan’Dale Robinson, 6 others limited

The New York Giants had the entire team available for practice on Wednesday but seven players, including WR Wan’Dale Robinson, were limited.

The New York Giants took the field for their first (open) practice of the 2023 regular season on Wednesday, which also gave way to their first official injury report and a few updates from head coach Brian Daboll.

The good news? Despite being a little banged up at the conclusion of training camp, every single member of the team’s 53-man roster practiced in at least a limited capacity.

“It’s good to have them all out here,” Daboll told reporters.

Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, who was activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on cutdown day, continued to progress toward a return. He was limited on Wednesday alongside six others.

The Giants’ Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Giants injury update: D.J. Davidson activated from PUP

The New York Giants have activated DT D.J. Davidson from PUP and offered updates on several other injured players, including Collin Johnson.

Prior to practice on Monday, New York Giants defensive lineman D.J. Davidson passed his physical and was activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Davidson joins a suddenly deep group of interior defensive linemen, including rookie Jordon Riley, who played well in his NFL preseason debut.

Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson (knee) and cornerback Aaron Robinson (knee) remain on PUP with no timetable for return, although general manager Joe Schoen previously implied that Robinson could be activated this week.

The news on wide receiver Collin Johnson, who suffered a knee injury against the Detroit Lions, was also somewhat positive. His issue does not appear to be long-term.

“I don’t think it’s long-term, but I’m not a doctor, either,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters.

Johnson will not practice on Monday but right tackle Evan Neal (concussion) will take a step forward. He will participate in the non-contact portion of practice as he works his way back. However, Neal remains in concussion protocol.

Meanwhile, offensive linemen Devery Hamilton (leg) and Tyre Phillips (unknown), running back Gary Brightwell (ankle), linebacker Cam Crown (unknown), defensive lineman Ryder Anderson (triceps), and defensive back Nick McCloud (stomach) will not practice.

Finally, cornerback Cor’Dale Flott (abdominal) will practice after leaving Friday night’s preseason game against the Lions early. Nose tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches (groin) will also practice.

Giants drop preseason opener to Lions: 7 takeaways

The New York Giants fell to the Detroit Lions, 21-16, on Friday night in their preseason opener and here are 7 quick takeaways.

The New York Giants opened their 2023 NFL preseason schedule with a 21-16 loss to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Friday night.

Here are seven quick takeaways from the game.

Giants waste two turnovers, fall to Lions in preseason opener

The New York Giants couldn’t capitalize on two INTs as poor O-Line play crippled the offense in a 21-16 preseason-opening loss to the Lions.

The New York Giants opened their 2023 preseason schedule with a late fourth-quarter loss against the Lions in Detroit on Friday night.

As expected, most of the key starters for both teams did not play.

Quarterback Tyrod Taylor, safety Jason Pinnock, and kicker Graham Gano were the Giants’ captains for the game.

Here’s a quick recap of the defeat.

Giants’ Darnay Holmes, Cor’Dale Flott talk competition for slot corner

Giants CBs Darnay Holmes and Cor’Dale Flott are ready for the competition ahead at training camp.

One of the many competitions set to take place at New York Giants training camp this summer will occur at nickel corner, where cornerbacks Darnay Holmes and Cor’Dale Flott are set to square off.

During OTAs and minicamp, the pair rotated at the position with the first team, setting up what should be an interesting battle when training camp begins on July 26.

“It’s an open competition, but I’ll just let that be when I get on the field,” Flott said to Ryan Dunleavy of the New Post recently. “I got a little taste of everything. The transition helped me be able to attack the nickel but not be too surprised if I have to move out there again.”

Flott, who was billed as versatile coming out of LSU, indeed saw a little bit of everything in his rookie season, with the third-round pick seeing time outside, in the slot, and even in the box during his rookie campaign.

However, he worked mostly on the perimeter with the team in need of bodies on the outside due to injury. Flott also dealt with injury, missing six games.

A 2020 fourth-round pick of the Giants, Holmes was the team’s top slot cornerback last season, appearing in a career-high 15 games. Like Flott, Holmes is well aware of what’s in front of him.

“It’s a battle each year for me,” Holmes said. “It’s always an opportunity to present myself to be one of the 32 best nickels [in the NFL]. I’m never a guy who shies away from competition, so I’m excited. We’re ready to get each other better and do what’s best for the team.”

As far as what he’s tried to improve this offseason, Flott, who looks bigger this offseason, mentioned his tackling and how “gaining a little extra” will help.

“Mostly my tackling — and that just comes with body composition and gaining a little extra,” Flott said. “With my quickness and my length, there aren’t too many 6-foot-2 people that move like a shifty guy, so I take pride in that and I’m ready to play it.”

Meanwhile, among Holmes’ offseason focuses was being better with his hands in order to avoid committing penalties.

“I want to be penalty-free — not as handsy,” Holmes explained. “People don’t understand nickel is a profound position and you can’t really focus on what the critics are saying. There are things my coach wanted me to work on, things I knew I needed to work on, and once I heard from their mouth that it was something I was already crafting on, I had peace with the situation.”

Also expected to be in the mix for the slot corner job is second-year corner, Zyon Gilbert, but make no mistake: this is very much a two-man race between Flott and Holmes.

Giants OTAs: Notes, videos and highlights from Day 5

News, notes and highlights from the New York Giants’ fifth day of organized team activities (OTAs).

The New York Giants were back in East Rutherford on Wednesday for their fifth practice of organized team activities (OTAs) and their second open to members of the media.

Head coach Brian Daboll opened things up with his traditional press conference and touched on a number of topics before players took the field.

The Giants remain in walkthrough mode — no pads and no contact. They have five practices remaining after today.

Below is a recap of the day, including news, notes, highlights, and a few videos.

CBS Sports ranks Giants’ 2022 draft class in bottom half of NFL

CBS Sports recently ranked the New York Giants’ 2022 NFL draft class in the bottom half of the league largely due to injuries.

The New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen made 11 picks in the 2022 NFL draft knowing that all of those players would likely see significant roles.

Unfortunately for Schoen & Co., they got bit by the notorious East Rutherford injury bug. 10 of the 11 draftees missed time due to injury with five of them closing out the season on IR.

Linebacker Micah McFadden was the only rookie to see action in all 17 games.

Despite those issues, there was some notable upside. Edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux appears to be lightyears ahead of where most rookies are, while offensive lineman Joshua Ezeudu and tight end Daniel Bellinger showed enough to be optimistic about their future.

Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson was also flashing before he went down with a torn ACL.

But because of all those injuries, it was hard to properly grade the Giants’ rookie class. And that ultimately led Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports to rank them in the bottom half of the NFL.

Thibodeaux hit the ground running after an injury delayed the start to his pro career. Bellinger, who many thought was a project, caught 30 passes in Year 1. (Cor’Dale) Flott was a part-time cornerback and chipped in with two pass breakups and a big one in the playoff win.

Over time, Schoen’s first draft class will likely look much better. They need right tackle Evan Neal to have an Andrew Thomas-like rebound and for the others to stay healthy. If that happens, there’s quite a bit of meat on the bone.

Giants’ Joe Schoen addresses 2022 NFL draft class

New York Giants GM Joe Schoen offers brief commentary on all 11 players from the 2022 NFL draft class, which was his first-ever as GM.

The New York Giants wrapped up the 2022 season on Monday with year-end press conferences from general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.

Multiple topics were discussed throughout the dual presser, including Schoen’s take on the 2022 NFL draft class — an 11-player group that contributed heavily throughout the year.

As a reminder, here’s a look at each of those picks:

  • Round 1: No. 5 – Kayvon Thibodeaux, DE, Oregon
  • Round 1: No. 7 (from CHI) – Evan Neal, OT, Alabama
  • Round 2: No. 43 (from ATL) – Wan’Dale Robinson, WR, Kentucky
  • Round 3: No. 67  – Joshua Ezeudu, G, North Carolina
  • Round 3: No. 81 (from MIA) – Cor’Dale Flott, CB, LSU
  • Round 4: No. 112 (from CHI) – Daniel Bellinger, TE, San Diego State
  • Round 4: No. 114 – Dane Belton, S, Iowa
  • Round 5: No. 146 (from NYJ) – Micah McFadden, LB, Indiana
  • Round 5: No. 147 – D.J. Davidson, DT, Arizona State
  • Round 5: No. 173 (from KC via BAL) – Marcus McKethan, G, North Carolina
  • Round 6: No. 182 – Darrian Beavers, LB, Cincinnati

Although many of these rookies played significant roles, injuries were the theme. All missed time over the course of the 17-game season with the exception of linebacker Micah McFadden.

Some missed the entire season.

Here’s what Schoen had to say about each member of his first-ever draft class.
