Badgers get back into the win column in Wahl’s return, defeat Penn State 63-60

The Badgers were able to end their three-game skid Tuesday, defeating the Nittany Lions 63-60 in Tyler Wahl’s (ankle) return to the lineup.

The Badgers ended their three-game losing streak Tuesday, beating Penn State 63-60 at the Kohl Center. Although he wasn’t particularly sharp from the field, Tyler Wahl scored 10 points (3-10 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 3-6 FT) in his return to the lineup after missing those three losses with a right ankle injury.

Wisconsin was able to capitalize off of the 10 turnovers they forced in Tuesday’s contest, turning those mistakes by Penn State into 15 points on the offensive end. On the opposite side, the Nittany Lions were unable to turn the Badgers’ six turnovers into any points of their own.

Steven Crowl was the leading scorer in the game, producing 21 points (9-16 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 2-4 FT) while reeling in 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Chucky Hepburn and Connor Essegian each scored in double-digits, compiling 13 points (3-7 FG, 2-2 3Pt, 5-6 FT) and 10 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 FT) respectively.

Essegian was making his first career start and the freshman reached at least 10 points for the third consecutive game and the fourth time over his last five contests total.

Max Klesmit suffered a cut to the face in the first half and was limited to just 10 minutes in the contest. More information on his status moving forward will likely come ahead of the Badgers’ next game Saturday.

For Penn State, senior guards Jalen Pickett and Andrew Funk led the way, scoring 19 and 16 points respectively. Pickett filled the stat sheet with 12 rebounds and six assists while Funk in particular produced from deep, making three out of eight three-point attempts in the contest. He’s now gone 10-for-20 on three-pointers over the last two games.

Penn State had an opportunity to send the game to overtime late in the game with Funk missing a long-range shot in the final seconds, losing the contest 63-60 as a result.

The Badgers improved to 12-5 with the win and are now 4-3 in Big Ten contests this season. Up next for Wisconsin is a matchup with Northwestern (12-5) on the road Saturday at 11 AM.

For Penn State, the loss drops them to 12-6 on the year and 3-4 in the conference. The Nittany Lions will head back home to take on Nebraska (9-9) at 2:15 PM on Saturday.

Badgers’ losing streak reaches three games, fall to Indiana 63-45 on the road

The Badgers lost a third game in a row Saturday, struggling with their shot in a 63-45 loss to the Hoosiers.

The Badgers played their third game in a row without Tyler Wahl (13.2 PPG) on Saturday as he continues to nurse an ankle injury, losing to Indiana in Bloomington 63-45. Wisconsin is now 0-3 without Wahl, their leading scorer, and Saturday’s 45-point performance was the lowest amount that’ve produced in a contest this season.

The Badgers struggled to a 32% field goal percentage in the contest, with only freshman Connor Essegian (14 points) scoring in double-digits. In addition to leading the team in scoring, Essegian also led the team in rebounds, producing a new career-high 11 boards.

Both Steven Crowl and Chucky Hepburn had tough games in Bloomington, scoring five and eight points respectively. With those two combining to average 25.9 points per game coming into this weekend’s matchup, their production Saturday left much to be desired.

On the opposite side, Indiana came into Saturday’s matchup riding a three-game losing streak. The Hoosiers were able to dominate the Badgers down low, outscoring their opponent 42-22 in the paint. Both Trayce Jackson-Davis (18 points and 12 rebounds) and Jordan Geronimo (12 points and 11 rebounds) finished double-doubles in the victory.

With the loss, Wisconsin’s record now stands at 11-5 and 3-3 in Big Ten contests. The Badgers will look to get off the schneid in their next contest on Tuesday (Jan. 17) when they return to the Kohl Center to take on Penn State (12-5) at 7:30pm.

Indiana improved to an 11-6 overall record with the victory and are now 2-4 in conference games this year. The Hoosiers will travel to Champaign to face off with the 12-5 Fighting Illini on Thursday (Jan. 19).

On Saturday afternoon, the Wisconsin Badgers could not contain Indiana in the second half allowing 45 points in their 63-45 road loss to the Hoosiers. Indiana was aided by a monster game from forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, who finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and four assists.

The Badgers struggled to put points on the board throughout the game and had only one player finish with double-digit scoring. Freshman guard Connor Essegian led Wisconsin with 14 points and 11 rebounds in his first game back in his home state. Unfortunately, even Essegian was 4-13 from the field, with the team as whole finishing with a 32.1 field goal percentage.

Michigan State pulls away late to defeat Wisconsin 69-65

The Spartans pull away late

With Michigan State traveling to the Kohl Center on Tuesday, the Badgers were unable to get back in the win column, losing to the Spartans 69-65. Operating without leading scorer Tyler Wahl (ankle), Wisconsin had three players score in double-digits including Steven Crowl (19), Chucky Hepburn (14) and Connor Essegian (13). Crowl in particular came alive in the second half, producing 15 points (7-10 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 0-1 FT).

On the opposite side for Michigan State, Stevens Point native Joey Hauser led the way with 20 points (6-8 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 6-6 FT) while Tyson Walker (13), Jaden Akins (12) and A.J. Hoggard (10) also reached double-digits. The Spartans were able to go 16-17 from the free-throw line, with the only miss coming on a questionable and-one attempt for Malik Hall late in the second half. Some may say, ball don’t lie.

Tom Izzo’s squad took a 33-31 lead into halftime and were able to gut out a two-point advantage again in the second half out scoring Wisconsin 36-34. The Spartans out rebounding the Badgers 18-7 in back half of the contest.

Overall, Wisconsin was able to take advantage of turnovers in the contest, turning 14 MSU mistakes into 27 points on the opposite end, outscoring the Spartans 27-2 in that category, but it wasn’t enough for the Badgers to end up on top. Michigan State made their final eight field-goal attempts and were able to eek out the 69-65 victory on the road.

With the loss, Wisconsin is now 11-4 on the campaign and 3-2 versus the Big Ten. Up next for the Badgers, they will take on Indiana in Bloomington on Saturday at 12pm CT before returning to the Kohl Center on Jan. 17 to take on Penn State.

Michigan State moves to 12-4 with a 4-1 Big Ten record. The Spartans will head to Champaign to face off with the Fighting Illini on Friday before heading back home Monday to face the #3 ranked Purdue Boilermakers.

Even though it wasn’t the Badgers’ best defensive game against USC, they were finally able to find a rhythm among the starters on offense. This included point guard Chucky Hepburn, who was able to find his jump shot after a rough few games and finished with a game-high 17 points while also hitting 3-5 from three-point range.

It wasn’t necessarily the result that the Badgers may have hoped for, but they certainly impressed the country with their impressive defensive performances in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Ten takeaways from Wisconsin’s heartbreaking loss to Kansas

The Badgers fall in heartbreaking fashion

Wisconsin gave No. 3 Kansas everything they could handle and then a whole lot more, but in the end the fight fell 0.2 seconds short as the Jayhawks escaped with a 69-68 win.

Wisconsin fell to 4-1, but even in a loss it felt like one of the most impressive Badger basketball performances in recent memory. Trailing by 15 in the second half, the Badgers could have packed their bags but instead they went on a number of runs, the final one culminating in a three-point lead with under 20 seconds left in regulation.

Kansas made just enough key plays to escape, as a Bobby Pettiford Jr. put in an acrobatic layup with 0.2 seconds left to break Wisconsin hearts.

There were a number of impressive takeaways for Wisconsin in an impressive loss. Here is what Badger fans can take from an incredible fight in The Bahamas:

The Wisconsin Badgers beat the Dayton Flyers 43-42 as underdogs in the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Badgers shut down the Flyers’ offense and made the game a defensive battle. They will move on to face the No. 5-ranked Kansas Jayhawks at 10 a.m. CT on Thanksgiving Day.

The Badgers limited the Flyers to 14 points in the first half and only a 30.2 field goal percentage on the day. Wisconsin center Steven Crowl had a good defensive performance with nine points, seven rebounds and four assists. Their leading scorer was true freshman Connor Essegian who racked up 13 points while going 2-4 from deep.

The Jayhawks will be a tough test for the Badgers on Thursday, and a victory would propel them to the final of the Battle 4 Atlantis and likely into the next USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.
