Could Taysom Hill be a QB option for the Colts?

Could the Colts look to the Swiss Army Knife of the NFL?

With free-agent speculation and offseason predictions at an all-time high…let’s throw one more headline in there. As crazy as the idea may seem, Taysom Hill might just be the man for the job for the Indianapolis Colts. A young, talented roster that is missing a mobile quarterback with an elite arm would benefit Hill tremendously.

Hill is a restricted free agent this offseason and with Teddy Bridgewater likely departing in free agency and Drew Brees retirement rumors heating up, Hill has a good chance to be the starter in New Orleans. All this would depend of course if all the chips fell in Hill’s favor.

Used a utility guy with the Saints over the past three seasons, Hill has played quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end, and multiple spots on special teams. Hill and his agent are ready to take the next step and be taken seriously as a legitimate starting quarterback, wherever that may be.

During Super Bowl week, Hill was asked about his future with the Saints in an interview with the Associated Press’ Rob Maaddi.

“I think as you look at the other questions ‘Is it New Orleans? Is it somewhere else?’ as you go into free agency, this is the time that you start to find out how people view you. And we haven’t gotten into free agency long enough to really know how these guys view me, and we’ll just handle it as it comes.”

Hill also talked about his desire to leave New Orleans as well saying.

“Do I want to leave? The fact of the matter is no, I don’t. But as you look at free agency, you have to find the right opportunity for you.”

Hill and the Saints know that if he is not given the promotion to starting QB this offseason then the undrafted third-year Swiss-army knife out of BYU will be on his way to greener pastures.

The biggest problem with Hill potentially hitting the market is the fact that he’s a restricted free agent. Unless the Saints allow Hill to test the open market, it’s highly unlikely he will have the opportunity to do so. And if he does, it will come at a high cost for the Colts.

But what if that greener pasture was Indianapolis? If Chris Ballard decided to bring Hill in and have him compete with Jacoby Brissett for the starting job, it would be an interesting contest between two fairly equal quarterbacks as far as skill level.

Brissett has him beat with experience and starts, but Hill’s rushing ability and arm strength (featured in the playoff game vs Minnesota) might make him a better candidate.

Hill would also be a huge discount for the Colts if they were able to get him in free agency (as opposed to the tender the Saints would put on him). Another veteran quarterback, like Philip Rivers or Tom Brady, might want more money to finish out their careers, but Hill would be available at a lower price because he is not an established starter yet.

Granted this is all speculation, but Hill seems like he would be a good fit behind the Colts stellar offensive line and already dominant run game.

The offense could look somewhat like Baltimore with a mobile quarterback who can carve up defenses with his feet or arm. This would also free up the spot at No. 13 in the draft to get more pieces to put around Hill to make sure he can succeed.

What do you think Colts fans? Is Hill an option for Indy?

Can Colts GM Chris Ballard deliver and draft a franchise QB?

Chris Ballard faces a big offseason that comes with the decision of drafting a QB.

With offseason speculation looming at the quarterback position, different opinions and predictions have been formed as to what Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard and the rest of the front office should do.

It seems that the options are endless and fans or even members of the media may not know until later in the offseason.

Does Jacoby Brissett need more time? Will a young draft pick at 13 (or higher) be the future? Does a veteran quarterback like Philip Rivers or Teddy Bridgewater seem like a safer option? Could Tom Brady wear the horseshoe?

These questions are just some of the many that Ballard will have to answer in the next few months. When it comes to picking the quarterback position, however, he is somewhat inexperienced. Ballard has an impeccable eye for talent and that has been shown from his time in Indy and in Kansas City.

He was responsible for drafting Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill and Marcus Peters. All three of those big-time talents were Pro Bowlers within their first three seasons. Hill and Kelce were also a monumental part in Kansas City’s Super Bowl victory and have helped elevate Patrick Mahomes immensely.

Ballard has never drafted a quarterback in his three drafts as general manager for the Colts. As director of player personnel and director of football operations with the Chiefs, he had only drafted two quarterbacks in a four-year span.

Granted, Kevin Hogan and Aaron Murray were both fifth-round picks and did not pan out to have successful careers, but this is the first time where Ballard has the reigns and the team desperately needs a quarterback.

Working with former Chiefs and Browns GM John Dorsey, Ballard did not have the final say on which players to draft. Now it is different.

Ballard’s knowledge of players is very deep and his ability to see value in draft picks makes him one of the best GMs in football. Hopefully, he can nail drafting a quarterback in April like he nailed picking Quenton Nelson and Darius Leonard in 2018— that’s if the Colts decide to get a quarterback with the No. the 13 pick.

Still, a lot of time is left to decide what is best for this team ahead of the NFL Draft on April 23. Key positions may experience some turnover and there may be new faces, young and old, out there when training camp starts.

One thing is certain though, in Ballard we trust.

8 Notre Dame Players Listed in Matt Miller’s Full Mock Draft

Time will tell but recent trends in some of the most-respected draft analysts mock drafts have had fewer and fewer former Fighting Irish going in round one.

April 23 will bring the start of the 2020 NFL Draft, this year being held in Las Vegas as part of the NFL’s celebration of bringing the league to Vegas with the Raiders.

How many Notre Dame players will we see drafted in those three days?  Time will tell but recent trends in some of the most-respected draft analysts mock drafts have had fewer and fewer former Fighting Irish going in round one.

Matt Miller from Bleacher Report released his full seven round mock draft this weekend and had eight different Notre Dame players getting selected.  Now who were they and where did he have them going?

R1 – 30:  Cole Kmet, TE, Green Bay Packers
R2 – 54:  Julian Okwara, Edge Rusher, Buffalo Bills
R3 – 75:  Khalid Kareem, Edge Rusher, Indianapolis Colts
R3 – 94:  Chase Claypool, WR, Green Bay Packers
R4 – 145:  Troy Pride, Jr., CB, Baltimore Ravens
R5 – 153:  Jalen Elliott, S, Arizona Cardinals
R6 – 196:  Alohi Gilman, S, New England Patriots
R7 – 241:  Tony Jones, Jr., RB, Miami Dolphins

A few thoughts on this one:

First off, as a Chicago Bears fan I despise the idea of both Kmet and Claypool going to Green Bay.  Jimmy Graham is washed up at tight end while aside from Davante Adams, there aren’t many options for Aaron Rodgers to throw to.  Kmet and Claypool fix that issue, especially when you factor in the ridiciulous depth of talent at wide receiver in this draft being the only reason Claypool would be a fourth round pick.

Okwara not only not in the first round but really not sniffing the first round.  It certainly is starting to seem like it’s going to be Kmet or bust for that first round.

Troy Pride, Jr. as a fourth round pick by the Ravens feels like the kind of Ravens defensive pick that you see, don’t think a ton about initally and then you look up six years later and he’s still a mainstay on that defense.

Alohi Gilman as a reserve safety and special teams player for the Patriots seems like the most Bill Belichick sixth round draft pick ever…well, besides that Brady guy.

Tony Jones, Jr. gets selected in this one.  I know the All-Star games don’t carry nearly the weight as the practices before them do but he had a rather weak showing a few weeks back in Tampa and I’ll be pleasantly surprised if his name is called and he’s not an undrafted free agent.

Early today, the internet was ablaze with rumors that the Los Angeles Chargers were ready to move on from Philip Rivers. Apparently, the team was ready to go into 2020 without one of the most successful quarterbacks in franchise history.

Those rumors were shot down by a report that no actual decision has been made. Let’s just say the rumors were true. The Chargers were ready to use Tyrod Taylor for a bridge year, draft a quarterback, and let Rivers play somewhere else for next season. Let’s look at some destinations where he could end up.

Colts’ Chris Ballard talks QB plans, offseason decisions

Chris Ballard discussed some important offseason topics.

Chris Ballard’s busy offseason has already begun and with that comes loads of scouting, player meetings, and tough decisions moving forward.

After an illness forced him to miss Senior Bowl practices this week, he spoke with Dan Dakich of 107.5 The Fan on Friday to recap the season.

One point that Ballard made was that there are so many unknowns at the quarterback position. He said, “I said this in my press conference, ‘I thought Andrew Luck was going to be our quarterback starting Week 1 this season,’ so I won’t make that prediction.”

He also called Jacoby’s disappointing 2019, “the tale of two seasons” and talked about how he really struggled in the second half of the year. “…We just hit a stretch in the second half of the season where he didn’t play as well. Jacoby knows he’s got to play better. We’ve got to help him. I’ve got to help him. Frank has got to help him. And he’s got to help himself with better play.”

One interesting question was whether Ballard would be more inclined to take a quarterback in free agency rather than develop one through the draft.

He responded, “We look at everybody. Always. Every year. I think you have to go through the process every year, at every position, but especially quarterback. Not only in the draft, but also in free agency.”

Ballard has never splashed on big free agent signings during his time in Indy but with over $90 million to work with this offseason, there might have to be a change of pace. Granted, Ballard is a great drafter who always gets value picks in later rounds, but you can only draft so many projects before you acquire some actual, proven talent.

“It just depends on how it falls. You never know what’s going to happen in free agency. You never know what’s going to happen in the draft. It’s an unknown every year. If we have a chance to get better, we’ll get better.”

With free-agent quarterbacks like Teddy Bridgewater, Jameis Winston, Philip Rivers, and yes even Tom Brady, there are certainly options out there. Whether any of these players have the ability to make this team truly better in the long run will be a crucial decision that the Colts scouts and front office personnel will have to evaluate.

The Colts front office will certainly be packed with decisions before and after the NFL draft but one thing is for sure, Chris Ballard has this team heading in the right direction. Even Ballard might not know what the Colts will do with the 13th overall pick until they are on the clock.

WATCH: Quenton Nelson Gets Wakeup Call in Pro Bowl Dodgeball

Participating in the Dodgeball Competition in the Pro Bowl Skills Competition, Nelson had a ball bounce of his hands right before another, well, gave Big Q a wakeup call.

Good morning and happy Friday to all of you!

Crazy weather across the Midwest aka winter (it happens every year) so what better way to wake up this Friday and get ready for your weekend than by watching a former Notre Dame star participate in the NFL’s Pro Bowl Skills Competition?

All-World offensive guard Quenton Nelson of the Indianapolis Colts is a beast. He’s in rare-air in that he’s been a First-Team All-Pro in both of his first two NFL seasons, he’s the straw that stirs the drink for the Colts offensive line and he’s got perhaps the best set of highlights we’ve ever seen for a guard.

One thing he doesn’t appear to have however is a great set of hands.

Participating in the Dodgeball Game in the Pro Bowl Skills Competition, Nelson had a ball bounce of his hands right before another, well, gave Big Q a wakeup call.

All I can think of is in “Billy Madison” when Adam Sandler’s character goes hog-wild on a bunch of kids in a game of dodgeball.

In my head that is what Quenton Nelson is doing right now – storming through Disney Land destroying whoever hit him in the face and each of their teammates one by one.
