In-game updates from Colorado vs. Minnesota

In-game updates from Colorado vs. Minnesota

The Colorado Buffaloes and Minnesota Gophers square off at Folsom Field on Saturday for the first time since 1992. Both sporting a 1-1 record, this early season non-conference matchup could have major implications for bowl game opportunities for both schools.

Through the first half, the Buffs’ offensive downfall masked what was an otherwise strong defensive effort. Just seven yards of offense were mustered up by the Buffaloes, including an uncharacteristic 12 combined yards from Alex Fontenot and Jarek Broussard. Colorado didn’t even move the chains for a first down until early

The complete first half stats:

All four of Minnesota’s sacks came on either third or fourth down. It was the first time since CU beat Nebraska in 2019 that the Buffs were shutout at the half.

Injury notes:

Defensive back Chris Miller and offensive lineman Max Wray were both taken off the field with an apparent injury in the first half. Wide receiver Chase Penry also took a big hit from a Minnesota DB and walked off the field with a trainer. Early in the second half, defensive lineman Janaz Jordan was shaken up but exited under his own power. We’ll have more updates when they become available.

Pac-12 Commissioner George Kilavkoff visits Folsom Field for CU-Minnesota

In-Game Reading: Pac-12 Commissioner George Kilavkoff at Folsom for CU-Minnesota

For the second time in about a month, new Pac-12 Commissioner George Kilavkoff paid a visit to Boulder. Kilavkoff, who was accompanied by Colorado Athletic Director Rick George, spoke with the media prior to Colorado’s Week 3 contest against Minnesota.

“We’ve been running around meeting with donors and alumni and fans and it’s just a beautiful, beautiful campus,” Kilavkoff said. “I got a lot more impressions when I was here for two days, and actually got to meet with a bunch of the constituents. What I would say is I was most impressed by is our student-athletes. It kind of blew me away.”

He added that his goal is to visit every Pac-12 school for a football game this season. So far, Kilavkoff has been present for UCLA beating a ranked LSU team and Oregon upsetting Ohio State. “I’m hoping to bring a little bit of luck for the Buffs,” he said.

Among other things, Kilavkoff discussed a potential 8-1-1 scheduling format for future Pac-12 football seasons. This would mean eight conference games, one ACC game and one Big Ten game. The other two non-conference games would be decided by the school.Β Kilavkoff called the new scheduling format the “North Star” of the recently announced alliance between the Pac-12, ACC and Big Ten.

Kilavkoff replaced longtime Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott in May.

Five reasons why the Colorado Buffaloes will beat Minnesota

A few thoughts on where Colorado can excel against the Gophers

Riding high off a statement performance against then-No. 5 Texas A&M, the Colorado Buffaloes welcome the Minnesota Golden Gophers back to Folsom Field for the first time since 1992. With both teams sitting at 1-1, it could be an early season decider for bowl game eligibility. The Buffs’ Pac-12 schedule doesn’t get much easier, which means a winning non-conference record is crucial.

Despite losing running back Mohamd Ibraham in their season opener, Trey Potts filled in nicely for the Gophers in Week 2 as they extended their non-conference win streak to 20 against Miami of Ohio. But the Gophers haven’t played at Folsom yet. Second-year head coach Karl Dorrell oversees a Buffaloes team that has allowed just 17 points in two games. Offensively, we’ve seen sparks of greatness from QB Brendon Lewis, but consistency will be key for his offense on Saturday.

Below are five reasons why I believe the Buffs will be 2-1.

Carlton Madden commits to Georgia football

Georgia football recruiting target Carlton Madden, a 3-star LB, has made his commitment

Ex-Buff Eric Bieniemy has emerged as a USC candidate

Clay Helton out. Could former Buffs star Eric Bieniemy take over the gig?

The USC Trojans fired Clay Helton as their head coach on Monday after a terrible loss against Stanford. Over the past 48 hours, coaches have popped up as candidates to replace Helton.

On Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Kansas City Chiefs assistant and former Buffs running back Eric Bieniemy had emerged as a candidate for the Trojans job in a somewhat shocking development.

Over the past few years, Bieniemy has interviewed for head coaching gigs in the NFL and has been surprisingly passed over time and time again. Is a move to the college ranks a good idea for Bieniemy? Perhaps it is, and Schefter reported that USC is one college job he would consider.

It makes sense. Bieniemy deserves a head coaching job–whether it’s at the NFL level or not. Furthermore, the Trojans’ job is not available very often and would be a perfect opportunity to head back to California where he went to high school.

Regardless, Bieniemy is a prime candidate and the Trojans coaching search is likely going to be a long one that might not end until the season concludes. With other names such as James Franklin and Bill O’Brien in the fold, one would have to think that Eric Bieniemy would be able to recruit talent at a high level while also putting fans in the stands.

It would be a well-deserved job for Bieniemy, and frankly, his role as a head coach is far past due.

Three-star running back DeAnthony Gatson announces commitment date

After making three official visits, DeAnthony Gatson is going to make a decision. He announced he will be committing on Tuesday, June 22.

Recruiting momentum is at an all-time high early on during the Steve Sarkisian era. Top players from across the country pilgrimaged to Austin, headlined by the first junior day since 2019.

Last Saturday began the festivities, with a decent amount of ’22 prospects made their first official visits. Three-star DeAnthony Gatson was one of them, spending two days around the Texas football program.

The Newton native headed out west to Los Angeles this weekend, to see USC while Colorado is still on the calendar. The three schools are a part of Gatson’s top five, with Iowa State and Minnesota looking from the outside in.

After making three official visits, Gatson is going to make a decision. He announced he will be committing on Tuesday, June 22.

Colorado, Texas, and USC seem to be the leaders here. For the Longhorns, Gatson is expected to play running back. Despite still having a commitment from Jaydon Blue, Stan Drayton has focused on getting another back for the class.

Considering Iowa State will not receive a visit prior to the commitment, Matt Campbell could be out. As for Minnesota, the Gophers took another running back from Texas in Zach Evans this past week.
