College GameDay: Lee Corso’s headgear pick for Auburn-Georgia

Lee Corso is taking Georgia over Auburn in the game of the week.

Week 2 of SEC play delivers a top-10 matchup between blue-blood programs with College Football Playoff aspirations. No. 4 Georgia will host No. 7 Auburn at 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN) in the must-see game of the day.

For College GameDay’s Lee Corso, the choice was easy. Corso explained that because Auburn will not let him wear the head of mascot Aubie The Tiger, he had no other option but to pick the Bulldogs at home.

Corso also picked Navy over Air Force, SMU over Memphis, UNC over Boston College, Tennessee over Missouri, Baylor over West Virginia, Texas over TCU, Iowa State over Oklahoma, and Alabama over Texas A&M.

College GameDay announces Oct. 3 location

College GameDay has announced its location for the Oct. 3 weekend. The show is headed to Athens, Georgia for Auburn at Georgia.

College GameDay has announced its location for the Oct. 3 weekend. ESPN’s flagship college football preview show will be held in Athens, Georgia on Saturday morning.

GameDay is hosted by Kirk Herbstreit, David Pollack, and more in a socially distanced outdoor studio. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, no fans can attend the event. This past week the GameDay crew visited the Florida State at Miami pregame events.

Still, there’s virtual guests, fans, and more for GameDay. The experience on TV is nearly the same.

GameDay will cover the SEC conference game between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Auburn Tigers. The contest is projected to be a top ten match-up.

This past week, Georgia defeated Arkansas 37-10 and Auburn got a solid 29-13 win over an unusually talented Kentucky football team. Last year, Kirby Smart and UGA beat Auburn 21-14 in a tightly contested game.

College GameDay: See Lee Corso’s headgear pick for Miami vs. Florida State

Lee Corso and the College GameDay crew were previewing the Miami-Florida State game in Week 4.

ESPN’s College GameDay crew visited Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Saturday ahead of No. 12 Miami’s primetime game against Florida State in Week 4 of the 2020 college football season.

Led by senior quarterback D’Eriq King, Miami opened the 2020 season with a win over UAB before taking out then-No. 18 Louisville last weekend. King is among the early Heisman Trophy favorites, and against the Cardinals, he threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns.

After a rough season-opening loss to Georgia Tech, Florida State is looking to beat the Hurricanes for the first time in four years, and it’s an 11-point underdog.

So when it came to making picks, GameDay had ESPN radio personality Stugotz as the guest picker — about which he said, “How many names in the rolodex did you go through before you landed on Stugotz?” — and he went with Miami.

And for the second straight week, Lee Corso is going with Miami for his 352 headgear pick, despite Florida State being his alma mater.

“Sorry, Noles, I’m going with the favorite! Miami!” Corso said on the broadcast from his home studio in Orlando.

However, he also predicted that Florida State’s defense will play “lights out and keep it close,” and he’s 6-2 in the eight times he’s picked the Hurricanes, per ESPN.

Corso also picked Georgia Tech over Syracuse, Cincinnati over Army, Louisville over Pitt, Virginia Tech over NC State, TCU over Iowa State, Oklahoma State over West Virginia, Oklahoma over Kansas State, South Carolina over Tennessee, Florida over Ole Miss, LSU over Mississippi State and Auburn over Kentucky.

The Miami-Florida State game is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

WATCH: Thomas Morstead gets his ‘College GameDay’ appearance

New Orleans Saints punter Thomas Morstead gets his ‘College GameDay’ appearance on ESPN, but it may have come at his own expense.

[jwplayer DzituAxG-ThvAeFxT]

It was a tough day at the office for Matt Campbell, a young punter for the Citadel who may have booted the worst punt in college football history; stuck in his own end zone, he botched the kick and dropped the ball directly into the hands of a South Florida opponent for the closest thing you’ll see to an own-goal in American football.

So Campbell understandably needed some support from his peers, including masters of their craft like New Orleans Saints punter Thomas Morstead. Morstead took up an invitation from Pat McAfee to join a “For the Brand Therapy” session on ESPN’s College GameDay program, talking through his most traumatic punting fail. The message to Campbell was clear: he’s not alone in making a highlight reel for the wrong reasons.

“January 11, 2014,” Morstead said deadpan, fixing the camera with a thousand-yard stare. “I had a ball go through my hands, and hit me straight in the nuts. Shortest punt of my career.”

He referenced a 2013 Divisional Round playoff game with the Seattle Seahawks, in which Morstead punted just 16 yards after the Saints offense went three-and-out on their opening drive. That play alone didn’t lose the game for New Orleans, but the painful memory still resonates with Morstead years later. He’s only had two other punts travel fewer than 25 yards (both in his 2009 rookie year, for 22 and 23 yards, but the latter was wiped out by penalty when an opposing player ran into him during the kick) in his lengthy Saints career.

But for added context: Morstead petitioned College GameDay to be named a guest picker when his SMU Mustangs visited the Memphis Tigers last year. He’s finally gotten his wish to at least appear on the program, but maybe not in the circumstances he’d prefer. Still, at least reliving his most painful personal failure may have done something to help a youngster move past his own low moment. See the full video for yourself:

College GameDay: See Lee Corso’s headgear pick for Miami vs. Louisville

Lee Corso picks Miami to beat Louisville in the only ranked matchup of the week.

The College GameDay crew visited Cardinal Stadium in Louisville on Saturday for the only ranked matchup of Week 3, an ACC showdown between No. 17 Miami and No. 18. Louisville. Both the Hurricanes and the Cardinals opened their seasons last week with a win, and Saturday’s matchup is highlighted by two star QB prospects in Malik Cunningham and D’Eriq King.

College GameDay guest picker Bill Murray picked the Cardinals to prevail, but from his home studio in Orlando, Lee Corso backed the Canes to pull off the road win.

Corso also picked App. State over Marshall, Middle Tennessee over Troy, Oklahoma State over Tulsa, and UCF over Georgia Tech.

College GameDay: See Lee Corso’s headgear pick for Clemson-Wake Forest

Lee Corso disappointed guest picker Chris Paul by backing Clemson over Wake Forest.

College GameDay returned to the road for Week 2 of the college football season and staged Saturday’s show at Wake Forest’s Truist Field ahead of the Demon Deacons’ season-opener against No. 1 Clemson.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard and former Wake Forest star Chris Paul was the guest picker on Saturday, and he backed the Demon Deacons to pull off what would be a colossal upset. Lee Corso, however, put on the tiger head and picked Clemson.

Corso also picked Kansas over Coastal Carolina, App State over Charlotte, Iowa State over Louisiana, Florida State over Georgia Tech, North Carolina over Syracuse, Notre Dame over Duke.

Gators News: September 10, 2020

Today is Thursday, meaning the weekend is creeping closer and closer with the promise of college football riding on its crest.

[jwplayer Fyfl4pUk]

Today is Thursday, meaning the weekend is creeping closer and closer with the promise of college football riding on its crest. However, that promise will be fulfilled in part first tonight, when the Miami Hurricanes kick off their season against the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers in Miami, Fla., with 19 games on the docket to follow on Saturday.

The top story today carries with it a bit of schadenfreude, as Georgia football mascot Uga will not be on the field at games for the first time in a decade due to COVID-19 protocols. There is no plan to have the dog in Athens elsewhere in the stadium as of now.

In other news, Penn State athletics reported its largest COVID-19 spike and has halted some programs in response. University officials announced that 48 student-athletes had tested positive for the coronavirus from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4, with 920 total tests taken during that time.

Meanwhile, in Norman, Okla., head football coach Lincoln Riley says that  Oklahoma will not release COVID-19 testing data for competitive reasons. Players across the Big 12 — and the nonconference opponents they play — will test on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday of game weeks.

Finally, ESPN announced plans Tuesday to have virtual fans part of “College GameDay.” If you want to be a virtual fan, follow this link. There will be 350 people chosen as virtual fans each week, according to ESPN.

WATCH: Kirk Herbstreit gets emotional talking about social injustice on College GameDay

ESPN College GameDay analyst and former Ohio State QB Kirk Herbstreit got emotional talking about social injustice in a moving monologue.

[jwplayer kHQWEZ2p]

We got to see a different side of Kirk Herbstreit this weekend that we don’t often see. The former Ohio State quarterback and long-time analyst on ESPN’s College GameDay program started to talk about what college players can do to help lead to change when it comes to social injustice when things got emotional.

“How do you listen to these stories and not feel pain,” said Herbstreit, as he started to choke up. “And not.. not want to help..”

Herbstreit continued to speak on the different injustices felt by the African-American community while visibly emotional in what was a very moving, raw commentary on social justice that we don’t often see on a channel like ESPN.

I would recommend that everyone watch this powerful video today:

Watch: Kirk Herbstreit’s emotional message on College Gameday

Kirk Herbstreit got emotional on College Gameday this week. See the video for yourself here.

ESPN’s College Gameday debuted for the 2020 season in a unique way as the several contributors looked more a part of an office Zoom meeting than they did part of the Saturday morning tradition that is the show each fall.

The show featured much discussion about the season, some hosts offering doubts as to if the season will be played as scheduled as the slate of games this Saturday wasn’t exactly an impressive one since no Power Five programs were kicking off.

The most powerful moment of the show came when discussing social injustices in the United States, Kirk Herbstreit got emotional in explaining why we all have to do more, whether we think some of these issues have to do with us or not.

It’s emotional, powerful and an all-time real moment on this season’s College Gameday premier.
