5. Winners & Losers From Week 12

Winner: QB Trevor Lawrence, Clemson

Remember way, way back to the old days of mid-October when Trevor Lawrence was supposedly freelancing, making too many big mistakes, and throwing eight interceptions in his first seven games?

Remember when he was overrated, not worthy of being considered a slam-dunk No. 1 overall NFL prospect, and was regressing in his sophomore year?

Good times.

Yeah … in his last four games he hit close to 80% of his passes and averaged over 12 yards per throw with 13 touchdowns and no interceptions. If that wasn’t enough, he also ran for 130 yards with two touchdowns as Clemson hung up 52 points or more on the board in each of those four games.

Loser: Arizona’s passing game

In recent years, a mediocre day from the Arizona passing attack usually happened because the ground game was going off. The Wildcats only threw for 68 yards against Oregon State back in 2017, but that’s because they ran for 534.

Against Oregon on Saturday, Arizona’s Khalil Tate and Grant Gunnell combined to throw for a season-low 132 yards with no touchdown passes. Worse yet, the 4.4 yards per pass were the fewest by any Arizona team since a 51-13 loss to the Ducks back in 2014.

Winner: RB Najee Harris, Alabama

Alabama’s passing game carried the team, but now with Tua Tagovailoa done for the year, it’ll be up to Harris and the ground game to start doing a whole lot more. Harris has rushed for eight touchdowns in the last four games and caught touchdown passes in each of the last two. He wasn’t needed much in blowouts over Arkansas and Mississippi State – running for 86 and 88 yards, respectively – but he took off for over 100 yards in the other three of the previous five games.

Loser: Georgia Tech’s running game  

Going back to early in the 2009 season in a loss to Miami, Georgia Tech failed to run for 100 yards just three times in a span of 134 games.

It has failed to run for 100 yards twice in the last three weeks.

The program went on a run of 40 straight games going back to 2016 with 100 yards rushing or more. That streak snapped a few weeks ago when Pitt allowed just 86 yards in a 20-10 win. On Saturday, Virginia Tech beat the Yellow Jackets 45-0, allowing just 53 yards on 31 carries.

It was the first time Georgia Tech was held to under 75 yards since Clemson gave up just 71 in the middle of the 2015 season.

Winner: The quarterbacks in the LSU 58-37 win over Ole Miss

Defense, schmefense. In LSU’s wild and crazy win over Ole Miss, Joe Burrow further cemented his Heisman credentials by completing 32-of-42 passes for 489 yards and five scores, and he ran for 26 yards.

Ole Miss freshman QB John Rhys Plumlee came up with 212 yards and four touchdowns … rushing. He also threw for 123 yards with a pick, and Matt Corral threw for 89 yards and a touchdown.

In all, the quarterbacks in the game accounted for 945 yards of total offense.

Loser: Northwestern’s quarterback play

The good news: Northwestern finally won a game again. It rocked a miserable UMass team – with the nation’s worst defense, by far – 45-6.

The bad news: the passing game completed 7-of-13 passes for 76 yards and two picks. Two weeks earlier, the Minutemen gave up 488 passing yards and five touchdowns to Liberty.

Winner: Kent State’s fourth quarter vs. Buffalo

0-60. That’s what Kent State was in its previous 60 games when down by 21 points or more. It was down 27-6 to a Buffalo team looking for its sixth win, bow eligibility, and a big step forward in the MAC East race.

Instead, in the final eight minutes of the game, Kent State scored a touchdown, recovered the onside kick, scored on a 41-yard pass play for a score, blocked a punt, tied the game on a fourth down touchdown pass, and won on the last play of regulation with a 44-yard Matthew Trickett field goal.

Loser: Baylor in the second half vs. Oklahoma

Everything was going so well. Baylor was up 31-10 at halftime, the party was just getting started, and then … Oklahoma score 24 in the second half – 31 unanswered overall – and Baylor suffered a brutal collapse. It couldn’t move the chains at all after halftime – Oklahoma ended up controlling the clock for over 41 minutes.

Winner: Rice

Rice had one win over an FBS program in its previous 31 games going back to September 9th of 2017. It won last year’s season finale against Ole Dominion, and it was competitive through most of the first part of the season despite the 0-9 start, and then … Rice 31, Middle Tennessee 28. The Owls failed to score in the second half, and it got WAY too tight, but it was the program’s first win of the season.

Loser: Duke

Didn’t you used to be Duke? The Blue Devils started the season 4-2 with acceptable losses to Alabama and Pitt, and since then they’ve not only lost four straight, but the offense has gone bye-bye.

They scored 30 or more in five straight games, and 44 total in the last four losses in blowout after blowout. A once sure-thing bowl season is now destined to be a loser, bottoming out in a 49-6 home loss to a Syracuse team that hadn’t won an ACC game.

College Football Playoff Rankings Projection, Week 3

What will the College Football Playoff rankings be in the third unveiling on Tuesday night?

As always, a few things to keep in mind …

1. This is simply a snapshot. We can see how the committee is thinking early on, and we can get a first look at what it seems to like, but it gets thrown out next week and the process starts over.

2. In general, the committee over the first five years of this thing loves big wins and hates ugly losses. You can lose, but don’t get wiped out. At the end of the day, the committee can like any team it wants to, just because. However … big wins, big wins, big wins.

3. Each spot in the order is argued over. It’s not just a random list thrown together in a room. Everyone has to agree that team X needs to get put ahead of teams Y and Z. You might not agree with the rankings, but each spot in the top 25 has been meticulously debated.

And after all of that, it’s about feel, eye-test, and resumé.

So what will they be? Here’s the best guess for what the third College Football Playoff rankings will be on Tuesday night.

25. Virginia Tech Hokies 7-3 (NR)

Here’s your answer for the ACC’s problem of who’ll end up in the Orange Bowl. Assuming Clemson is in the College Football Playoff, the next highest-ranked ACC team will be in the big game, and Virginia Tech is two wins away – Pitt, at Virginia – from getting there.

24. Texas A&M Aggies 7-3 (NR)

It’s finally time finally recognize Texas A&M for its horrible, horrible schedule break. Yeah, it’s 7-3, but those three losses were to CFP No. 3 Clemson, No. 5 Alabama, and No. 12 Auburn. The blowout win over South Carolina will have to be enough to move into the rankings.

23. SMU Mustangs 9-1 (NR)

The Mustangs were 25th in the first round of rankings, dropped out after struggling to get by East Carolina 59-51, and will slide back in after a week off. The win over TCU is still a key part of the puzzle, but the record and the offense will be enough to be ranked.

22. Appalachian State Mountaineers 9-1 (25)

Now the Mountaineers will move up after getting into the top 25 last week. The wins over North Carolina and South Carolina are still great for a Group of Five program, and blowing away Georgia State 56-27 was terrific. Don’t be stunned if ASU is deep in the chase for the Cotton Bowl at the end of the process.

21. Oklahoma State Cowboys 7-3 (22)

The committee liked Oklahoma State enough to put it in the top 25 from the start. Now on a three-game winning streak, and after a blowout win over Kansas – everything sets up for a big finish. Get by West Virginia on the road, and the Oklahoma game will be for a chance to screw up the Sooners’ CFP hopes.

20. Boise State Broncos 9-1 (21)

Shhhhhhhhh. This really might be your Group of Five representative in the New Year’s Six Cotton Bowl slot. Watch out for Cincinnati and Memphis screw each other up – they’ll likely have to play twice – and Boise State will keep on moving up. But for now, being in the top 20 is fine.

19. Iowa Hawkeyes 7-3 (20)

Is it possible to leapfrog the one-loss Group of Fivers? Iowa should – the three losses are to CFP No. 14 Wisconsin and No. 15 Michigan on the road, and to No. 9 Penn State in a close battle. And now they beat the unbeaten No. 8 Minnesota team, but they’ll still likely be behind …

18. Memphis Tigers 9-1 (18)

The Tigers won four straight with a convincing win over Houston on the road. They have to keep winning, though. Lose, and the door is open for SMU to jump into the AAC West lead. Everything for MU is steamrolling towards a showdown against …

17. Cincinnati Bearcats 9-1 (17)

Some will argue that the Bearcats should be higher than this, but they struggled WAY too much with a mediocre USF team in a 20-17 win. All that really matters is that they’ll still be the top-ranked Group of Five team, giving it the inside track for the Cotton Bowl.

16. Auburn Tigers 7-3 (12)

Yeah, the Tigers now have three losses, but remembering that the committee argues the merits of each team and each position, they can’t – and likely won’t – drop too far after a close loss to last week’s CFP No. 4 team, Georgia. Remember, the other two losses came to CFP No. 11 Florida and, or course, No. 1 LSU.

15. Baylor Bears 9-1 (13)

Remember, these rankings aren’t like other polls. It’s not as simple as win and move up, lose and move down – there’s an outside shot the Bears don’t move down at all. The committee will like the first half against Oklahoma just enough to not punish the Bears too much – they won’t be any lower than 14, if they don’t move up.

14. Notre Dame Fighting Irish 8-2 (16)

The Fighting Irish can’t and won’t move ahead of Michigan, but after obliterating the CFP No. 23 Navy team 52-20, they’ll slide into the top 14 and hang around enough to be in range for a New Year’s Six bowl consideration.

13. Michigan Wolverines 8-2 (15)

Unlike the other rankings, the College Football Playoff committee is old enough to remember when the Wolverines were blasted by Wisconsin. A New Year’s Six game is still possible by winning out, finishing up with a win over Ohio State. At the very least, now they’ve positioned themselves up for a solid Big Ten bowl slot.

12. Wisconsin Badgers 8-2 (14)

This is actually too high for a team that’s shakier than it might seem, but the convincing win over Nebraska on the road – combined with the now-stronger looking win over Iowa two weeks ago – will move the Badgers up a few spots.

11. Florida Gators 9-2 (11)

The Gators should actually be ranked higher than this considering their two losses came to CFP No. 1 LSU and No. 4 Georgia. The win over Auburn will matter more and more – technically, Florida should be ahead of Oregon in this. A spot in a New Year’s Six game will be a near-lock if it beats Florida State convincingly.

Georgia football rises, Aggies join Top 25 in latest AP Poll

UGA football rises in the polls, Texas A&M joins the Top 25 of AP Rankings

The Georgia Bulldogs knocked off the Auburn Tigers Saturday to clinch the SEC East and lock up a spot in Atlanta for a third-straight season.

Following the big win, the Dawgs saw a slight jump in the Sunday polls, moving from 5th to 4th in both the Amway USA TODAY Coaches Poll and the Associated Press Poll.

Georgia was already ranked No. 4 to start the week in the College Football Playoff rankings, but can now officially claim it is ranked higher than Alabama and more.

Below, you will find the complete AP Top 10, with Texas A&M ranked No. 24 heading into Athens.

Texas falls out of the AP top 25 poll after losing to Iowa State. After getting back into the top 25 last week, Texas only lasted one week.

Texas fell out of the AP poll Top 25 after losing on the road to Iowa State. The Longhorns stint in the top 25 only lasted one week after being ranked No. 22.

Georgia takes over in the top four, as they jump Alabama after narrowly defeating Auburn on the road. 

Oklahoma had an incredible comeback win against Baylor, being down as much as 28-3. The Sooners came back to win 34-31 and jumped up two spots to No. 8. The Bears surprisingly only dropped one spot to No. 13. 

Oklahoma State is the only other Big 12 team ranked, jumping up three spots to No. 22. Iowa State (31) and Texas (4) also received votes.

Texas will travel to face No. 13 Baylor on Saturday.

Amway Coaches Poll: Texas falls out

Texas lost a rough one to Iowa State on a game-winning field goal last night. It caused the Longhorns to fall out of the Amway Coaches Poll.

Iowa State beat Texas 23-21 last night on a game-winning field goal as time expired from Connor Assalley. It was the Longhorns fourth loss and dropped them out of the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Minnesota fell four spots to No. 11 after losing on the road to No. 20 Iowa. The Gophers and Baylor were two 8-0 teams that fell last night, as the 13th ranked Bears lost at home to No. 7 Oklahoma.

Following Saturday’s action, the Amway Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports, has been revealed for Week 13.

Georgia may have had college football’s most impressive win of the weekend, beating No. 12 Auburn on the road. If you’ve watched Auburn this season, you’d know they were the best No. 12 in a long time.

Last week, Georgia was at No. 5 in the Coaches Poll, one spot behind Alabama.

However, after Georgia’s win and Alabama’s loss of Tua Tagovailoa, the coaches moved Georgia up to No. 4, where it also sits in the College Football Playoff rankings.

The highest ranked team to lose was No. 7 Minnesota, which fell to Iowa and dropped to 11.

No. 10 Baylor was handed its first loss of the season via an epic comeback from Jalen Hurts and Oklahoma. The Bears fell to No. 13.

No. 11 Penn State survived a scare from Indiana but held on to win by a touchdown.

Kirk Herbstreit ranks college football’s top-four teams

Where is Georgia football in Kirk Herbstreit’s top-four teams.

Kirk Herbstreit ranked college football’s top-four teams on Sunday morning, following an action-packed Saturday in the top-ten.

His rankings actually stayed the exact same, though, seeing as how none of the drama happened at the top, leaving Georgia football at No. 4 after the Dawgs beat Auburn.

I see nothing wrong with that. There was not really a scenario for Georgia to move up and it definitely did not deserve to move down either. No. 4 is a great spot for UGA.

As for Alabama staying at No. 5, I agree with that one, too. I’d leave the Tide where they are until they prove that the Tua Tagovailoa loss is going to hurt as much as we expect it to.

Predicting College Football Playoff rankings – Does Georgia football move?

Does Georgia football move in our predictions of the new College Football Playoff rankings.

On Tuesday night, the College Football Playoff rankings will be revealed on ESPN. Between now and then, the committee will have a lot to discuss regarding the 5-10 positions.

As for 1-4, it’s pretty set in stone.

LSU, Ohio State, Clemson and Georgia all took care of business. The Dawgs definitely had the most impressive win of the weekend among those teams, a road win vs No. 12 Auburn, but it should remain at four as the three undefeateds ahead of it still have a 0 in the loss column.

There was some drama on Saturday.

1-7 all won their games, but in Tuscaloosa the Tide surely are not celebrating after hearing the news that Tua Tagovailoa dislocated his hip and will be out for the remainder of the season.

The highest ranked team to lose was No. 8 Minnesota, which fell to Iowa.

No. 9 Penn State survived a scare from Indiana but held on to win by a touchdown.

And No. 13 Baylor was handed its first loss of the season via an epic comeback from Jalen Hurts and Oklahoma.

With everything in mind, I will attempt to predict what the committee will do on Tuesday.

These are not my rankings, but a prediction of what the rankings will look like

I think the committee is going to give Alabama the benefit of the doubt until the Tide prove they don’t belong. If Alabama loses to Auburn, it’ll obviously move down. So they’ll just wait and see.

8. Oklahoma (jumps Penn State)

9. Penn State

10. Florida

This would give Georgia one win over a team in the top-10, Florida. Additionally, I predict Auburn will fall to No. 17 and Notre Dame, after destroying Navy, will move to no. 13.

Where did Paul Finebaum rank Georgia football after beating Auburn. What about Alabama?

Following Saturday’s action, the SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum revealed his top new top-six teams in college football.

Last week, Finebaum had Georgia at No. 5 after beating Missouri, while Alabama was sitting one spot ahead at No. 4.

On Sunday, however, taking into consideration Georgia’s road win over Auburn and the loss of Tua Tagovailoa at Alabama, Finebaum moved the Bulldogs to No. 4 and dropped Alabama to No. 6.

Minnesota also dropped out after losing to Iowa and was replaced by Oregon.
