Pre-spring bold predictions for the 2024 college football season

We give bold predictions for college football in 2024.

The 2024 college football season will be perhaps the most anticipated one in recent memory. It certainly will be that in Austin after the Texas Longhorns (12-2) won a conference title and made their first ever College Football Playoff.

Several coaches and players will have a change of scenery in the upcoming season. Presumably most of those coaches and players have already found their next stop.

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer leaves Washington after taking the team to a national title game. Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh departs for the NFL while Alabama legend Nick Saban will enjoy his first season of retirement.

With significant changes across the country, we could see significant shakeup atop the sport. Let’s predict what could happen in the 2024 college football season.

Longhorns Wire’s College Football Playoff, New Years Six predictions

Longhorns Wire predicts the New Year’s Six slate of games.

The New Year’s Six slate is just over two weeks away. The set of games begins with the Ohio State Buckeyes and Missouri Tigers in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 29.

Several interesting matchups comprise the list of games. One of those matchups involve one of the biggest David and Goliath comparable clashes in the history of the New Year’s Six. Undefeated, and perhaps untested Liberty, takes on an Oregon team that has coasted past lesser competition.

The College Football Playoff, however, takes center stage on New Year’s Day. In the first game, smash mouth teams in Michigan and Alabama are primed for a physical matchup.

Texas and Washington follow in what could be a scheme-off between Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian and Huskies head coach Kalin DeBour. The talent that pervades both rosters will make the coaching of that much greater importance.

Here’s how Longhorns Wire sees the games taking place.

Championship week predictions, including Texas vs. Oklahoma State

Let’s predict this weekend’s five Power Five conference title matches starting with Friday’s Pac-12 game.

Championship week begins Friday night when the Washington Huskies take on the Oregon Ducks for a second time. The game kicks off a loaded set of conference championship games.

The Texas Longhorns have the opportunity to win their first Big 12 title in 14 seasons. That accomplishment is significant in its own right. The Longhorns will have a great chance: They face the struggling Oklahoma State Cowboys.

The Cowboys limped into the conference title game after defeating the Oklahoma Sooners to set up a title run. After the win, the team lost to UCF by 42 points, struggled against the Houston Cougars and defeated BYU in double overtime.

Week 10 picks including Texas and Kansas State

Texas better be prepared to tackle.

The path to the College Football Playoff narrows this week. Several teams are set to clash in big time matchups while others look to avoid upsets for another week.

The headliner of the week takes place between SEC West rivals LSU and Alabama. Texas has an interest in the game given its resume-defining win over the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Elsewhere, the Big 12 title race could be all but decided this week. Four one-loss conference teams face another team of the same conference pedigree on the day.

Texas and Kansas State meet for Big Noon Kickoff. Afterward Oklahoma and Oklahoma State play what could be the final Bedlam rivalry matchup. A loss could end a title bid for any of the four teams.

Let’s predict some of the best games from Week 10.

Predicting the best games of Week 9 and Texas vs BYU

Expect another close game this week with BYU in town.

It’s prediction time. The No. 7 Texas Longhorns (6-1) have one of the more unpredictable matchups of the week against the BYU Cougars (5-2).

We expected the Longhorns to play an inspired four quarters of football coming out of the bye week against Houston. The last three quarters were uninspired.

Texas all but laid down after building a 21-0 lead. Getting off to a fast start seemed to be a focus for the team exiting the bye week. This week, they might have to play a strong four quarters to win.

We’re under no illusion that BYU is a national football powerhouse, but neither was Houston last week. And now more than ever it seems coaches can make close games out of lopsided matchups if they prioritize those games. You can expect the Cougars had this game circled.

Let’s predict that game and more.
