Michigan vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

The Maryland defense is having a few issues.

It doesn’t do enough to take the ball away, it doesn’t come up with third down stops, and the pass defense isn’t strong enough.

Michigan is more consistent than sensational. It can hit the big play at the right time – it did just that late against Penn State – but it’s goal it to start rolling and keep on pounding away.

The running game has been a wee bit off over the last few weeks, but it should get going for close to 200 yards in this, the passing attack is moving the chains, and most importantly this week, the other side of the ball gets the job done against the pass.

Maryland can sort of run, but it has to throw to get things going. Michigan has yet to give up a 300-yard day, it doesn’t allow a whole lot of deep shots, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Maryland Will Win

Really, what quarterback has Michigan faced so far?

Penn State’s Sean Clifford is fine, and Jahan Dotson and the receiving corps are great, and the Wolverines allowed 223 yards last week. That’s about it for the solid passers.

Maryland has to keep things moving with its midrange throws. Taulia Tagovailoa might have a few issues with picks, but he’s been bombing away, hitting close to 70% of his throws on the year with close to 1,200 yards and five scores over the last three games.

As long as he’s able to hit his quick shots and get the ball out of his hands in a hurry, the O will move.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the Maryland offense will get its passing yards, but the defense won’t be able to handle the grind.

Michigan will seem like it always has the ball – it should control the clock for well over 35 minutes – and slow and steady will win the race. It’s not going to be the most impressive of performances overall – at least until late – but it’ll be the win the team needs to set up the showdown next week against the Buckeyes for the Big Ten East title.

Illinois vs Iowa Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

Iowa might have changed around its quarterback situation, and the passing game improved, but it’s not like the offense is about to crank up 500 yards and 45 points.

The Hawkeyes need takeaways to win. The offense continues to be the worst in the Big Ten – averaging fewer than 300 yards per game – as it relies on the defense to hold up and keep things close.

Illinois doesn’t turn the ball over. It leads the Big Ten and is among the best in the nation in turnovers, giving away just eight so far. The team has a way of keeping games low scoring, it controls the tempo, and it’s playing a team that fits its style perfectly.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Iowa Will Win

Head coach Bret Bielema is out in the COVID protocol, but even if he was on the sidelines there would be a big issue.

Illinois has to run well to win, and it’s not going to run well in this.

Wisconsin is crushing everyone lately with its ground attack – it ran for 166 yards against the Hawkeyes. The run D had its worst game of the season in last week’s win over Minnesota – it gave up 189 yards.

Illinois rancor over 300 yards in the wins over Charlotte and Penn State, and ran for 185 yards in the victory over Minnesota – the team’s three top rushing performances of the year.

Iowa gives up just over 100 rushing yards per game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It’s an interesting situation for both teams.

Iowa is still in the Big Ten title chase, but it has to win this week, take out Nebraska, and hope for Wisconsin to biff at some point.

Illinois can get bowl eligible if it wins this week and beats Northwestern to close. OR, it can get there by winning one of the last two games and hoping for there not enough teams to be bowl eligible – Illinois would be near the top of the list of 5-7 teams with a great Graduation Success Rate, but that’s for another day.

Alex Padilla has added some semblance of a passing game for Iowa, the run defense will hold up, and 9-2 is 9-2 – don’t worry about how the sausage is made.

Penn State vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

The defense continues to be good enough.

Forget the steamrolling applied by Wisconsin a few weeks ago in a 52-3 Badger win, the Scarlet Knights continue to be terrific against the mediocre offenses.

They kept Indiana and Illinois down, they were good against the run against Northwestern, and they’ve allowed fewer than 300 yards of total offense in six of the ten games. Now they get a Penn State offense that can’t run, has a problem allowing plays behind the line, and is way too inconsistent.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Penn State Will Win

Penn State has a passing game.

Jahan Dotson has emerged as one of the nation’s top wide receivers – and a favorite among the NFL scouting community – Sean Clifford is solid when he gets time to throw, and the offense should be able to generate the explosion that the Rutgers attack really, really can’t.

The Scarlet Knight offense struggles to get to 300 yards, and it has to run well to win. The team is 3-0 when getting to 200 yards on the ground, and Illinois is the only team to push past 182 rushing yards on the Penn State defense.

Rutgers isn’t running for 200 yards in this.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It’s an interesting moment for both teams.

Penn State is 6-4 and James Franklin is being talked about for every big head coaching opening, but there’s a big, big problem if there’s a fifth loss in six games – especially against a mediocre Rutgers team.

The Scarlet Knights can get bowl eligible with a win, but they’re going to have to wait until next week’s game against Maryland to do that. Their offense won’t be able to do enough.

Purdue vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

The defense is far, far better than it showed against Ohio State.

The Buckeyes have the No. 1 offense in college football in both scoring and yards – they’re doing that against everyone. Purdue still cranked up yards and points in the second half to at least get in some good exercise.

Score just a little bit against Northwestern and it’s over.

The Wildcats are struggling on offense, but the defense is just as big an issue. Purdue doesn’t really run, but it should be able to do it without a problem, and the midrange passing attack should go off.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Northwestern Will Win

No, Purdue really doesn’t run the ball.

It’s got the worst running game in the Big Ten – that’s because it throws – and it doesn’t normally bomb away. It comes up with a ton of yards, but it’s all midrange throws – Northwestern’s defense should be able to handle that a wee bit.

As much as the Wildcats are struggling, that’s partly because they’ve faced Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and Michigan over the last month. Purdue has a defense, but the Northwestern passing game is just good enough to keep things moving and control the tempo of the game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It’s like a bowl game for Northwestern. It’s actually more like a staycation for the 3-7 Wildcats, making the trip down the road to play in Wrigley Field for a quirky game that might be just the type of strange setting to throw Purdue off a tad.

The Boilermaker offense should be able to keep the offense going well enough – it’s been over 200 passing yards in every game – to make Northwestern press.

Northwestern needs Purdue to implode, and that’s not going to happen.

Michigan State vs Ohio State Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

It the Ohio State defense good enough?

It’s been sort of ignored over the last several weeks after the rough start, but the Buckeye D hasn’t exactly been tested since dealing with Minnesota and Oregon to start the season. Purdue was the first decent attack it faced after the  first few weeks, and it agave up 477 yards and 31 points.

Granted, almost all of that came when the game was effectively over, but Michigan State might be able to do what it did to Michigan.

Ohio State is going to get its yards and points, but the Spartans have to keep on pushing through. That starts with Kenneth Walker, who might not have to run for five touchdowns like he did against the Wolverines, but again, this is the first good rushing attack OSU has played since Oregon.

On the other side, Michigan State has the pass rush to bother CJ Stroud and keep him uncomfortable, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Ohio State offense really is that good.

No, the defense hasn’t played anyone all that great since September 11th, but the offense had to deal with Penn State and Purdue, and it ripped through both of them.

No. 1 in the nation in yards and scoring, Ohio State got the running game going again with a brilliant day against the Boilermakers, the NFL-caliber receiving corps is lighting it up, and Stroud has settled in.

Michigan State might be playing well, but the defense has been awful. It’s got the nation’s worst pass defense – allowing over 1,300 yards over the last three games – and things aren’t about to get any better this week.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Give it a half.

Ohio State will come out hot, but it won’t deliver the knockout punch. Walker will get going, the Michigan State offense will move, and it’ll be a close, tight battle going into the fourth quarter. And then Ohio State will go Ohio State.

Two big pass plays will finally open it up and the Spartans won’t quite be able to keep up. Ohio State will put up 500 yards, Walker will run for 150 and two scores, and it’ll be a true survive-and-advance battle.

Mississippi State vs Tennessee State Game Preview

Why Tennessee State Will Win

Head coach Eddie Georgi’s team has a secondary.

It has massive problems with penalties, it doesn’t put enough points on the board, and the defense doesn’t come up with enough big plays, but the secondary allows just 179 yards per game and keeps offenses to just 50% completion rate.

Obviously you know what you’re getting with Mississippi State.

It’s not going to run – it’ll do that at a bare minimum – and it’s going to try controlling the clock with its midrange passing attack. Tennessee State has the secondary to keep from getting torched deep, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Mississippi State should be able to keep moving the chains – the Tennessee State defense is strong, but it’s not great on third downs – and it’s not going to take too many points to get this done.

Tennessee State doesn’t have enough of a running game to matter, the Bulldog passing game is on a roll – it was brilliant in the comeback win over Auburn – and 24 points should be enough to win.

Tennessee State scored more than 30 just once.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

A fast start is everything.

Mississippi State struggled to get going against Auburn and it had to scramble to get back into it. This week, the faster it can put this away, the faster it can start preparing for Ole Miss on Thursday.

Tennessee State, though, will be pesky enough to keep this from getting out of hand. Mississippi State isn’t going to be in any danger, but it won’t be as smooth as it might like.

Texas A&M vs Prairie View A&M Game Preview

Why Prairie View A&M Will Win

The Panthers bringing a dangerous offense that’s going to keep the pressure on.

Former Louisville QB Jawon Pass is an ACC-caliber passer who can move, the defense is nasty in the secondary, and the run D allows 104 yards per game.

The lines might not have Texas A&M talent – obviously – but they might hold up a bit better than you’d think against a team already preparing for LSU. It might not be consistent, but this Panther D can hold up for a few drives if Texas A&M keeps it conservative.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Texas A&M Will Win

After the clunker against Ole Miss, the Texas A&M is going to come up with something to prove – at least for the first 20 minutes or so.

That, and throw in the Senior Day, final home game of the season factor and there’s going to be more effort than normal in a paycheck scrimmage game.

A&M has to keep on working. It has a New Year’s Six bowl game – possibly the Sugar if it catches a few breaks – but that’s not on the table unless it beats an LSU team next week that’s going to need the win to get bowl eligible.

In other words …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia vs Charleston Southern Game Preview

Why Charleston Southern Will Win

Georgia’s game plan is to get its starters off the field as soon as humanly possible.

Style points don’t matter in this, and there’s not going to be a lick of focus from the No. 1 team in the nation with next week’s rivalry game against Georgia Tech to get through before dealing with Alabama in the SEC Championship.

The Buccaneers of Charleston Southern gave East Carolina a run in a 31-28 loss earlier in the year. They have a decent passing game, a solid defense that’s great at taking the ball away, and they should be able to provide air it out a bit in the second half as they keep trying for the full 60 minutes.

Any points in this will be a win because …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Georgia Will Win

The Georgia defensive front is about to get its DoorDash order delivered in the Charleston Southern backfield.

The Bulldog defense might be second in the nation behind Wisconsin, but in terms of intimidation and big hits, in a class all by itself. The Badgers lead the nation in total defense, but Georgia leads in scoring D giving up 7.6 points per game.

The Buccaneer offensive line is awful in pass protection and it’s not about to pave the way for anything on the ground. Georgia’s defense isn’t going to tone it down just because it’s Charleston Southern.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Charleston Southern hasn’t had a problem scoring at least a little bit, but it’s about to be in for a long day against a team that’s going to want to flex a little No. 1 muscle.

This should be the JT Daniels game. He hasn’t been able to see a whole lot of work with Stetson Bennett playing so well, but this is when – let’s be honest here – the team’s best quarterback will get in some meaningful work.

Kentucky vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why New Mexico State Will Win

New Mexico State scored first.

It was up 3-0 on Alabama last week in Tuscaloosa, it was well on its way to a historic upset, and …

Yeah, for some reason, Alabama decided to try the rest of the way in a 59-3 win, but this is a better New Mexico State team than that.

It can’t run the ball all that well, but it throws, it has a dangerous passing attack that can keep things moving, and now it’s going against a Kentucky team that’s not trying to gear up and get ready for an SEC championship appearance and possible shot at the College Football Playoff.

Kentucky has a lousy time taking the ball away, the pass defense will give 200 yards, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Kentucky Will Win

Kentucky is going to care, too.

Here’s the biggest issue for New Mexico State – it’s Senior Day at UK with a trip to Louisville up next.

The Wildcats are still alive for a ten-win season by winning out – including a bowl game – and they shouldn’t have too much of a problem with a defense that’s going to live in the Aggie backfield – NMSU has rushed for fewer than 50 yards in three of the last four games – and won’t have to worry about any downfield passing game.

Yeah, New Mexico State can throw, but there’s a whole lot of dinking and dunking.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky isn’t going to take any big chances.

It’ll run at will on the New Mexico State defensive front, it’ll convert on third downs with ease, and it’ll learn from the close call against Chattanooga early in the season and take this seriously enough to get out to a good, sharp start.

But unlike last week against Alabama, New Mexico State will put up a few points in the second half.

LSU vs ULM Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

It’s a funky Warhawk team coached by Terry Bowden and an excellent staff that got extremely creating throughout the year just to get to four wins.

There isn’t any one thing this team does well, but it does a great job at not screwing up. It doesn’t have a huge turnover issue – outside of a few rough games – it takes the ball away, and it’s one of the best teams in the country at limiting penalties.

Just how much is LSU going to care?

This isn’t the final home game – that’s next week against Texas A&M. The program is playing out the string losing five of its last six games – with only the strange win over Florida as a brief respite of fun.

When ULM comes up with three takeaways, it usually wins. LSU might not be ultra-focused, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why LSU Will Win

ULM doesn’t have enough of an offense to keep up if LSU give even a decent effort here. The Warhawk offensive line gives up a ton of plays in the backfield, there isn’t a downfield passing game, and LSU should be able to take advantage of it all.

The Tigers are great at getting into the backfield, the pass rush should own the game for stretches, and when it comes to penalties, LSU is the best in the nation in fewest yards on flags.

What’s Going To Happen

After such a painfully disappointing season, LSU is going to want to have some fun.

It’s been a rough run, but now there’s a break for the first time since beating Central Michigan back in mid-September.

The offense will be balanced against the ULM defense, the defense will come up with enough third down big plays to matter, and the team will keep alive bowl hopes with Texas A&M to close things out next week.
