Notre Dame leads list of crushed College Football Playoff dreams

Another influential writer is suggesting Notre Dame needs to win out.

One of the leading voices in college football is piling on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish after the team’s poor showing against Northern Illinois.

The fallout from the 16-14 loss to a then-unranked MAC team continues.

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde has a weekly series with the 12 teams that had their playoff dreams crushed, and Notre Dame leads his series this week.

“Following up a hard-nosed victory at the Texas A&M Aggies with this dud of a home opener immediately increases the heat on Freeman for the rest of this season,” Forde writes.

Notre Dame's loss to NIU may have crushed their playoff dreams.
Northern Illinois celebrates scoring a touchdown during a NCAA college football game between Notre Dame and Northern Illinois at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, in South Bend.

It’s been a theme in the days following the stunning loss — can Notre Dame, the same team that seemed guaranteed a playoff spot just days before playing NIU, qualify?

What happens against Purdue will start to determine the answer. Until then, the analysts and pundits can merely speculate.

It’s tricky, since both sides can be argued, and since Notre Dame doesn’t have a chance for an automatic bid via a conference championship.

The Irish can start providing answers on Saturday.

ESPN playoff predictor updates College Football Playoff chances. Where is Ohio State ahead of Michigan game?

An updated look at what ESPN’s predictive model says about Ohio State and other contenders chances of making the College Football Playoff. #CFBPlayoff

We are on the doorstep of a couple of very important weeks in the 2023 college football season. There’s just one week left in the regular-season and then the conference championship games before we get some tasty bowl and College Football Playoff matchups.

And while we are heading into Rivalry week, there’s still five Power Five teams unbeaten. Ohio State, GeorgiaMichigan, Florida State and Washington seemingly have the inside track on making that four-team playoff. Behind them, OregonTexas and Alabama are ready to pounce should any above them stumble.

The next couple of weeks will no doubt have some results that change where teams are and which ones have the best chances of getting into all of the fun. In fact, we know that Ohio State and Michigan will send a ripple across the landscape based on which team wins the 18th version of “The Game” on Saturday.

We like to follow ESPN to see what its “Playoff predictor” says about the teams that have the best chance to be a part of the final four, and that model has been updated heading into Week 13. Of course, we’re interested in where Ohio State lands, but we’ve also got our attention focused on the other teams that could impact the Buckeyes’ chances of making the very last, four-team version of the College Football Playoff.

Here’s a look at the teams that have the best chance of making the CFP and where Ohio State lands as we enter the final stanza of the season. We count down the top 10 teams from the least to greatest chance of heading to New Orleans or Pasadena.

Early 2023 college football national championship odds

An early look at the 2023 CFP contenders.

The 2023 college football season may be months away, but it is never too early to take a look at the expected contenders. FanDuel has released national championship odds for the season.

Georgia is the heavy favorite as the Bulldogs look to make it three straight titles in 2023. Fellow SEC rival Alabama follows Georgia as the Crimson Tide looks to take the crown back. Each squad is going to break in a new quarterback as Stetson Bennett and Bryce Young are NFL bound.

Ohio State and Michigan are next up on the list representing the Big Ten. Both teams qualified for the playoff last season and hope for return appearances. Ohio State was a field goal away from taking down Georgia in the semifinals.

USC just missed the playoff a season ago. With Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams returning, the Trojans look to qualify for their first playoffs.

Here is a look at each team receiving national championship odds according to FanDuel.

Notre Dame odds of upsetting USC increase per ESPN FPI

What kind of chances do you give the Irish on Saturday night?

We’re approaching the station that marks the end of the 2022 regular season for Notre Dame.  An all-time roller coaster year that has seen incredible lows mixed with the biggest win in a really long time concludes with a trip west to take on USC this Thanksgiving weekend.

What kind of chances does Notre Dame have in upsetting USC and ending their College Football Playoff hopes?  We’re discussing this all week as we countdown to kickoff but thought we’d go to the ESPN FPI well one last time this year.

What chances does ESPN’s Football Power Index give the Irish this Saturday?  Find out below and then check out where FPI ranks Notre Dame and all of their 2022 opponents below.

FiveThirtyEight updates CFP odds after Tuesday night’s Rankings release

How have the odds of making the CFP changed for Ohio State and other contenders after Tuesday night’s rankings? Here is what FiveThirtyEight says.

We’re at it again. We keep following the updated odds for Ohio State and other contenders to make the College Football Playoff, and we’re following the lead of the popular analytics website FiveThirtyEight on the whole deal.

Each week — in fact twice a week — the fine folks at FiveThirtyEight update their College Football Playoff Predictor based on a formula derived from historical rankings of the CFP Committee. In fact, from the website itself:

“Our model uses the College Football Playoff selection committee’s past behavior and an Elo rating-based system to anticipate how the committee will rank teams and ultimately choose playoff contestants, accounting for factors that include record, strength of schedule, conference championships won and head-to-head results. It also uses ESPN’s Football Power Index and the committee’s rankings to forecast teams’ chances of winning. (Before Nov. 2, when the CFP will release its first rankings, the Associated Press Top 25 poll is used instead.) The teams included above either have at least a 0.5 percent chance of making the playoff or are in the top 25 in at least one of the three rankings we use in our model: FPI, the Elo-based rating or CFP/AP. Every forecast update is based on 10,000 simulations of the remaining season. Full methodology »”

That’s all a fancy way of saying developer Jay Boice and statistic modeler Nate Silver are a lot smarter than you and I.

We last checked in on the model after last weekend’s games, and we’re taking a look again after the second iteration of the CFP Rankings were unveiled on Tuesday night. So, here’s how the odds for Ohio State and all the other contenders that have 10% or greater chance of making the College Football Playoff stack up now.

But first, here’s how things looked prior to Tuesday night.

And now, here’s where things stand at the moment counting down from the least odds to the best.

FiveThirtyEight updates Ohio State’s chances of making the College Football Playoff after Week 2

What’s the latest College Football odds for Ohio State and others in contention after Week 10 according to FiveThirtyEight?

It’s that time of year where a nudge here or there in the rankings by the College Football Playoff Committee can make a huge difference in what kind of odds a team like Ohio State has in making the CFP. The Buckeyes more or less control their own destiny but will have to deal with the hand that the CFP Committee deals them regardless (we’ve seen that before).

To keep track of where OSU’s odds stand on getting in on all of the fun, we like to keep our eyes peeled on what the folks at the popular analytic site FiveThirtyEight have to say about what’s going on. Each week, they update the CFP odds based on the outcome of games and spin it through whatever genius-level equation they have, and share it all with the enquiring college football minds.

We have the latest projections and we’re going to break them down for the top eleven on the board at the moment. Remember, this will all change about a dozen ways leading up to the final rankings and selection Sunday, but it’s good to know where everyone — including, of course, Ohio State, stands about a month out from when travel plans will be made.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

FiveThirtyEight updates Ohio State’s College Football Playoff Chances

FiveThirtyEight has updated its model when it comes to the teams that have the best chance of making the College Football Playoff. Where is Ohio State?

It’s hard to believe, but Ohio State only has four regular-season games left on its 2021 college football schedule. That means the Michigan game will be here before you know it, and then hopefully, a postseason that has the College Football Playoff as a part of it.

We’ve been keeping tabs on the analytics that FiveThirtyEight keeps track of when it comes to the Buckeyes’ chances of getting into the CFP, and with every week, those odds continue to change. We can’t pretend to tell you what all goes into the formula for calculating these sort of things, but we’ll trust that whatever algorhythyms and special sauce ingredients go into making the sausage are on point according to geniuses there.

We’re checking in again and can tell you that Ohio State’s chances of getting into the College Football Playoff are still pretty good after taking care of business against Penn State. But there are other factor involved too. Michigan State beating Michigan, Cincinnati continuing to win, Alabama looking fantastic again, and many more things have the model continuing to change by the week.

So, here’s a look at the eleven teams that have the best chance of making the College Football Playoff as it stands right now, who they play, and what the chances are if each wins out.

Texas Football: BetMGM national championship odds for 2021

Heading into the 2021 season, the usual contenders are atop the BetMGM national championship odds.

For the third time since the implementation of the College Football Playoff, Alabama was crowned as the national champions. It was another season where the Big 12 did not participate and was left looking from the outside in.

As we head into the 2021 season, the usual contenders are atop the BetMGM national championship odds. The Crimson Tide is the odds favorite at +300, with Clemson shortly behind at +350.

Within the conference, Texas has the third-best odds behind Oklahoma and Iowa State. The Sooners are once again the favorites to represent the Big 12 within the playoff and are the fourth overall favorite to win at +700. For the first time in three seasons, Lincoln Riley will have his starting quarterback returning for another season.

After Steve Sarkisian’s hire, the Longhorns have been slated at +5000 to win the national championship next season. The former Alabama offensive coordinator is fresh off of winning one in January.

It has been 11 years since Texas appeared in a national championship and 15 years since winning the 2006 Rose Bowl against USC. Sarkisian’s ultimate goal is to start contending for championships, national and Big 12, right away.

Here are the full odds:

Alabama +300

Clemson +350

Ohio State +500

Oklahoma +700

Georgia +800

Texas A&M +2500

LSU, Wisconsin +3500

Florida, Iowa State, Miami, Notre Dame, Penn State  +4000

Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, USC +5000

Seeing Texas alongside programs such as Michigan and Tennessee shows that there is still work to be done. The Wolverines just extended head coach Jim Harbaugh, despite their 2-4 shortened season. As for the SEC program, Jeremy Pruitt was fired and the Volunteers have seen a mass exodus of players with NCAA violations pending.

In order to get up there with the likes of Florida, Iowa State, and Notre Dame, Sarkisian must be able to have a solid year right away.
