ESPN analyst: Tigers ‘not on the same level’ right now as ’16, ’18 national title teams

On ESPN’s College Football Live this week, ESPN college football analyst Greg McElroy weighed in on the question, is Clemson “back”?

The Tigers have scored 30-plus points in every game this season and are coming off a 34-28 win at Florida State last Saturday.

Clemson (7-0, 5-0 ACC) has won 13 straight games dating back to last season, the longest active streak in the FBS. The Tigers are ranked No. 5 in both the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll and have the third-best odds to make the College Football Playoff (-125) according to Caesars Sportsbook.

“I think they’re good, but are they back? That’s where I kind of draw a little bit of a line,” McElroy said. “Now at this point, this has always been the team that improves. They get through the first half, maybe play some average games at the midway point, and then they get better and better and better. And then come playoff time, that’s when they’re playing their best football, and I can see that becoming very realistic again this year.

“However, I’m not as convinced that their offensive firepower is as good as is once was. I think their defense is good, teetering on the edge of elite, but I’m not sure they’re as disruptive up front as they’ve been in the past as well.”

McElroy added that right now, he doesn’t believe this year’s Clemson team is as good as the Tigers’ 2016 and 2018 teams that won national championships.

“I think Clemson is really good, but they’re not on the same level as the ’18 or the ’16 team in my eyes just yet,” he said.

Clemson returns to action Saturday at Death Valley for an undefeated ACC showdown against No. 14 Syracuse (6-0, 3-0).

“If someone said, ‘Clemson’s back,’ my natural response would be, back to where?” Howard said. “Like, back to what we’re used to seeing? I wouldn’t say that at all. I think that they’re starting to trend in the right direction. DJ Uiagalelei is playing better now, especially better than he played at the beginning of the season. The offense seems to have found its rhythm. Defensively, I’m still concerned with the secondary on the back end. I know up front, they’re strong, they’re talented, maybe the best front seven in the ACC. But their back end can be exposed.

“So, I would say, ‘back’? They’re getting there but not quite there just yet.”

ESPN analysts on what it would take for FSU to down Clemson

The Atlantic Division showdown Saturday night between Clemson and Florida State was discussed on ESPN’s College Football Live.

The analysts were asked what Florida State could do to pull out the win.

“Well they have to be better offensively,” Stanford Steve said on Thursday’s show.  “When you go back and look at last week they really, really struggled and got shutout in the second half at NC State in a game that they led for the whole first half.  I worry about that in this circumstance because one thing I know is that Clemson defense, it travels.  It travels very, very well.  Florida State has to be more consistent and limit turnovers.  You can not turn the ball over and give the ball to Clemson,” Stanford Steve.

Sam Acho believes the Noles will have a big challenge to defeat Clemson.

“Here is the struggle for Florida State.  Some of the weaknesses that you saw had last year they have almost become strengths.  If you look at DJU he struggled last year.  He has almost doubled his offensive performance when it comes to touchdowns  Last year he had nine.  This year already through half the season he already has 17.    Not throwing interceptions, not turning it over.  And then Clemson’s defense.  We said what is the defense going to look like.  They have a new defensive coordinator.  Is it going to be the same?  They have been every bit as consistent as you would expect.  So it will be a tall task for Florida State to find a way to win against a Clemson team that is hitting on every single cylinder,” Acho.

Around the Big Ten: Desmond Howard says that Scott Frost is the head coach most in need of a season opening win

Desmond Howard said that Saturday is a must-win for Scott Frost and Nebraska football.

No head coach in the country needs a win this weekend than Scott Frost. So says ESPN analyst and former Heisman winner Desmond Howard when talking about Frost, the embattled Nebraska head coach.

The difficulties faced by Nebraska last season in closing out games are well-established and don’t need rehashing…but we will anyway…each of the Cornhuskers nine losses last year came by nine or fewer points. Three came by fewer than five points. Frustrating to say the least, especially given the talent on that roster.

In five seasons at Nebraska, Frost is 15-29 and has failed to make a bowl game. The hot seat is certainly turned up ahead of the Week 0 opener against Northwestern in Ireland.

“No coach in college football needs to win their first game more than Scott Frost because if they drop this game to Northwestern, things could spiral out of control very quickly,” Howard said on ESPN’s College Football Live.

“You could see Cornhuskers nation all over social media calling for his head.”

That’s certainly one way to say that Frost is on the hot seat without actually saying it.

Howard said that with Nebraska’s heavy investment this offseason in the transfer portal adding that “Hopefully they can get eight or nine wins this season.” Frost’s best record at Nebraska came in 2019 when the program went 5-7.

Nebraska is hoping to turn their season around that starts this weekend against Northwestern. They also have some huge games on their schedule that include hosting Indiana on Oct. 1 and a game at Rutgers the following weekend.

This is, however, the deepest and most-talented Nebraska team that Frost has built in quite some time. One that, very easily, could flip their record from a season ago.

In leading off the segment on ESPN, former Georgia linebacker David Pollack set the stage for Howard’s comments. He feels that Nebraska could and should take a step forward this season under Frost and be bowl eligible.

“I think they can double what they did a year ago and that’s only winning six games but they found every way possible to lose via special, via turnovers, via whatever you could possibly do,” Pollack said.

“They brought in 22 transfers this offseason. The big one to me is Casey Thompson, coming from leading the Big 12 in passing touchdowns. Now I think you’ve got a quarterback that coach Frost can build around and be dependable. I think Nebraska goes bowling this year because of it.”

ESPN analyst: ‘I don’t love the narrative surrounding Clemson right now’

On ESPN’s College Football Live show on Tuesday, ESPN college football analysts Greg McElroy and Joey Galloway discussed Clemson’s over/under being set at 10.5 wins according to Caesars Sportsbook.

McElroy said he’s taking the under and added, “I don’t love the narrative surrounding Clemson right now.”

“I think Clemson’s a team that’s better when they are disrespected, but right now, they’re sitting at No. 4 in the country (in the preseason AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll) after a very disappointing year. That’s the opposite of disrespect,” McElroy said.

“So, I think that there’s still questions around their quarterback spot. I think there’s questions with having to replace both coordinators. So, I’m going to take the under. I’m thinking that 10-2 is probably the most realistic setup, and it’s an ever-improving ACC group from top to bottom.”

Galloway agreed with McElroy and said he’s going with under 10.5 wins for Clemson this season as well.

“I think they’ll get to 10,” he said. “We’ve been talking about Clemson like they died last year and they got to 10 wins, and I think they get back to 10 wins this season. In the middle of that schedule, they have at Wake Forest and NC State back-to-back, and then later in the season they go at Notre Dame. So, I’m going to go with about 10 wins for Clemson, but I would not be surprised if they do get to 11.”

Clemson went 10-3 (6-2 ACC) last season to extend its streak of consecutive seasons with at least 10 wins to a school-record 11.

The Tigers kick off the 2022 campaign against Georgia Tech at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday, Sept. 5 (8 p.m., ESPN).

On ESPN’s College Football Live this week, ESPN college football analyst David Pollack discussed which blue-chip college football program has him the most concerned going forward in the season.

Pollack’s answer was ninth-ranked Clemson, which scored only 14 points — its fewest vs. an unranked team since 2011 — in a 14-8 win over Georgia Tech last Saturday at Death Valley.

“I think Clemson’s offense, offensive line, quarterback play, running back, wide receiver, all of it working together — it’s just not Clemson-like,” Pollack said. “So, it’s been a struggle. They can fix it and they can get it going in the right direction, but it’s just been a struggle to start watching this season. It’s so uncharacteristic, and it’s not going to be a high-flying offense like we’ve seen in the past by the end of the season, but it’s got to be a better-than-good offense at the end of the season with all the speed and highly recruited guys they have and with (Will) Shipley and D.J. Uiagalelei. So, I think it’s Clemson for me.”

The Tigers return to action at 3:30 p.m. this Saturday against NC State in Raleigh, N.C. The game will be televised on ESPN.
