Pete Thamel lists four coaches who could fill Notre Dame opening

Would you like one of these coaches?

Since [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] announced his intention to leave Notre Dame in January, various names have floated as his replacement. Our own Nick Shepkowski made his own list of candidates in the immediate aftermath of Brey’s announcement. While it’s nice to keep all options open, it appears the list is starting to narrow down. At least that’s what ESPN’s Pete Thamel said he believes during the most recent episode of College GameDay:

For all we know, this list could be completely bogus with none of the four landing the job. But when you cover college basketball for a living, you’re bound to hear a few whispers about who the next coach might be. For argument’s sake, let’s pretend this list is legitimate and that the search indeed will come down to these four. Then, we can debate as to who would be the best candidate for the Irish for the long haul:

Army vs Colgate Game Preview

Why Colgate Will Win

The Raiders have a whole slew of problems, but the run defense isn’t too bad.

There’s no pass rush, but that doesn’t matter against Army. Colgate’s offense doesn’t have a turnover problem and it doesn’t beat itself with a ton of penalties.

Army’s offense has been awful, but it’s not operating at peak efficiency. The running game isn’t quite as dominant as it should be and the defense isn’t holding up like it needs to, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Army Will Win

The Knights are catching a break against a Colgate team that’s not going put a ton of points up on the board.

The running game is okay, but the passing attack doesn’t rip off yards in chunks. Worst of all, it doesn’t hit its third down tries and doesn’t control the clock.

No, Army’s offense isn’t operating like it should, but it should be able to keep the ball for well over 35 minutes.

What’s Going To Happen

Army is overdue for a strong performance.

It couldn’t stop screwing up in the loss to Georgia State, and is never had much of a chance against Wake Forest. This week it’ll go on two early scoring drives and crank down the clock from there. Colgate won’t have the O to keep up.

Stanford vs Colgate Game Preview

Why Colgate Will Win

The Raiders have to hold up on the lines. They should be okay in pass protection, and they have enough in place to generate a little bit of a running game, but as long as they don’t let Stanford start rolling on the ground, they might be able to hang around.

The Cardinal defense is all but starting over, there wasn’t any semblance of a pass rush, and the offense has to prove it can consistently get things moving.

Limit the turnovers, run the clock, and keep the penalties to a minimum. Colgate can do that.

But …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Stanford Will Win

The Colgate is – to be nice about it – lacking.

It doesn’t have the downfield passing pop, the running game isn’t anything special, and putting points on the board last year was like pulling teeth.

Stanford’s defense might be welcoming in a whole bunch of new parts, but this is the team to go against when you’re trying to work out the kinks.

Stanford should be able to take some chances, spread the ball around a bit, and yeah, the lines will be fine as the game goes on.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Wait, what?

Stanford isn’t playing a Power Five program?

The program has played 40 straight FBS teams, and was on a run of 27 straight against the Power Five, since beating UC Davis. Now it gets to start the season with a win for the first time since 2019 with what should be a strong all-around performance.

Colgate will give it the old college try, but it won’t have the offense to keep up the pace after Stanford scores on two methodical drives to open things up.

6 First Round upsets worth betting on in the 2022 NCAA Tournament

Who will be this year’s Oral Roberts?

They don’t call it March Chalk-ness.

That would be way too clunky and doesn’t quite roll of the tongue. In fact, it makes it sound like Kansas wins the whole thing every year. No, no, it’s the madness were all here for—and that means knowing the upsets are coming and still being shocked when they happen.

Each year, without failure, a handful of teams rise up and make a few bettors look like geniuses for grabbing their moneyline odds while the rest of us rip up our brackets.

In 2021, it was No. 15 Oral Roberts and Max Abmas taking down Ohio State as +950 underdogs. This year there are a number of teams who could have similar performances this year in the First Round. Let’s run through them and sprinkle a few ML bets.

Another Conference Cancels Fall Sports for 2020

It was the Ivy League last week and today it’s another conference that is cancelling all fall sports in 2020.

Last week saw big news on the college sports landscape as the Big Ten and Pac-12 announced plans to only play conference games during the fall sports season this year while the Ivy League took things a step further, cancelling all fall sports.

Now the Ivy League has company as another collegiate conference is axing all fall sports.

The Patriot League that consists of American University, Bucknell, Boston University, Holy Cross, Colgate, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola (Maryland), Army and Navy, announced Monday that they have cancelled all fall sports for 2020.

The league added that both Army and Navy are exempt from the cancellations.

Army plays football as a Division 1 independent while Navy plays football in the American Athletic Conference.

For now, Notre Dame is still scheduled to play Navy on Labor Day weekend but I feel safe in saying that is looking murky at very best, much like college football in general for 2020.
