Mississippi State set to hire Alabama OLB Coach Coleman Hutzler as their next DC

Alabama football set to lose first coach from 2023 coaching staff

The season isn’t even over yet, but the annual Alabama Crimson Tide coaching staff purge has already begun. That is the gift and the curse of Nick Saban’s greatness. He elevates coaches and gets the absolute most out of them just to have opposing schools come in and snipe his hires.

The first member of the 2023 Crimson Tide staff to depart will be OLB and Special Teams coach Coleman Hutzler as Mississippi State is currently in the process of finalizing Hutlzer as their new defensive coordinator. Hopefully, Coleman is the only one we lose, but that’s just never how it goes.

It has been a difficult year in Starkville after the passing of Mike Leach on Dec. 12, 2022 and they are yet to find stability in the program. After Leach’s passing, the Bulldogs promoted DC Zach Arnett to become the programs 35th coach. Arnett was ultimately fired after a 4-6 start this season so the Bulldogs will be rolling into 2024 as a brand new regime.

Mississippi State hired Oklahoma OC Jeff Lebby as their next head coach earlier in the week to help turn the program around. Hutzler is one of the first hires Lebby has made, and it is a massive one at that. People around the Alabama program speak and think very highly of Hutzler so it’s a loss that I’m sure stings Saban a bit.

Wish list to replace Texas co-defensive coordinator Jeff Choate

Texas’ linebacker coach position could be highly sought after among college defensive coaches.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is now hiring for a new linebacker’s coach and potential co-defensive coordinator alongside Pete Kwiatkowski. Given the talent present on the roster and the Longhorns’ involvement in the College Football Playoff, the role should be highly sought after in the coaching profession.

Texas fans want Gary Patterson after seeing how much the Texas defense improved with Patterson as a special assistant. The likelihood is, however, that Patterson is more interested in head coaching positions than roles underneath a defensive coordinator.

Other former big name head coaches have drawn the attention of fans on social media. Names like former Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops and former Texas head coach Charlie Strong have been brought up by Texas faithful. Albeit, Texas donors don’t want Stoops and understandable pride could keep Strong from taking an assistant role at Texas.

While we won’t rule out those moves, let’s look at a few more options Texas might turn to at linebacker’s coach and potential co-defensive coordinator.

Alabama expected to hire former Texas LB coach Coleman Hutzler

From Texas linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler will be Alabama’s new special teams coordinator.

Nick Saban is adding former Texas linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler as Alabama’s new special teams coordinator.

The 2017 Broyles Award finalist stems from the Will Muschamp coaching tree.

Alabama will be the fourth stop in as many years for Hutzler. He spent fours seasons at South Carolina before taking the Texas linebackers coach job in 2020. Hutzler did not have enough time to make a huge impact in Austin. Steve Sarkisian chose not to keep Hutzler on staff after taking the Texas job in early 2021.

It did not take long for Hutzler to find a new gig. Lane Kiffin swooped in and hired Hutzler as the special teams coordinator at Ole Miss ahead of the 2021 season where the Rebels had a tremendous 10-3 season.

Hutzler will coach from the opposing sideline in DKR next season when Alabama takes on Texas in Week 2.

Alabama expected to hire special teams coordinator Coleman Hutzler from Ole Miss; role unclear

Alabama football has hired Coleman Hutzler from Ole Miss.

Several assistants have come and gone under Alabama football head coach Nick Saban. Most of them go on to be the head man elsewhere, but many others simply take promotions elsewhere higher up the proverbial food chain of coaching.

While Alabama still has hold of current special teams coordinator Drew Svoboda, who also coaches tight ends, it was reported that Ole Miss’ special teams coordinator Coleman Hutzler has been hired by Saban and the Crimson Tide.

It is not yet clear what role Hutzler will fill upon his arrival, but his previous experience includes occupying a role as co-defensive coordinator at Texas and coaching both special teams and linebackers at South Carolina (2016-19), Boston College (2015), Florida (2014, 2010-11) and New Mexico (2012-13).

We will update you when we determine what positions Hutzler will be responsible for during the 2022 season.

Texas Longhorns Officially Announce Coleman Hutzler Joining Staff

The Texas Longhorns officially welcomed Coleman Hutzler to the staff. He will be the linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator.

Late on Monday evening the rumor mill starting catching wind of the Texas Longhorns adding a new staff member to take over as the linebackers assistant coach opening. As first reported by Anwar Richardson, Coleman Hutzler was the front runner to take that spot. On Tuesday afternoon, the Longhorns made it official that Hutzler would take over linebackers coach and was named co-defensive coordinator.

Hutzler was most recently with the South Carolina Gamecocks serving under former Longhorns’ defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. In 2017, Hutzler was nominated for the Broyles Award that goes to the nation’s best assistant coach.

“Coleman is a coach who came highly recommended by several people I have a great deal of respect for in our business,” Herman said. “When we had a chance to sit down and talk with him, he certainly lived up to everything we had heard. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience, is high energy and has accomplished a great deal while spending much of his career coaching in big-time environments in the SEC. He’ll do a terrific job developing our linebackers and helping us grow on defense. We’re excited to get him on board and to get him around our team and out on the road recruiting for us.” –Tom Herman to TexasSports.com

A New Name Emerges For Texas Longhorns Linebackers Assistant Job

According to a report from Anwar Richardson, Chris Ash and The Texas Longhorns are eyeing a South Carolina Assistant.

A recent report indicated that Southern Methodist’s Kevin Kane was a name tied to the open linebackers assistant coach position but it seems there is another name in the mix. According to Anwar Richardson, an assistant at South Carolina is in line to get the job.

Coleman Hutzler is currently on staff with former Texas Longhorns’ defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. Hutzler joined Muschamp in 2016 and he has been both a linebacker’s coach and special teams coordinator. Hutzler first started coaching in 2006 as a defensive assistant for the University of San Diego. He has made stops in Stanford, Florida, Boston College and Florida. His next stop might just be in Austin, Texas
