Charleston Southern men, Coastal Carolina women crowned champions at Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Collegiate

The True Blue Golf Course in Myrtle Beach hosted the Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Collegiate.

The Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Collegiate featuring men’s and women’s teams from across the country was held at True Blue Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Ten men’s teams and 17 women’s teams teed it up as they all prepare for the final stretch of the regular season and postseason play.

This was the first time Golfweek and Any Given Tuesday have teamed up but event was about much more than golf. Any Given Tuesday has spearheaded fundraising efforts for the families of those lost and injured in the tragic University of the Southwest vehicle crash. Any Given Tuesday has helped raise funds, one birdie at a time, with many teams, coaches and players pledging $1 for each circle on their card.

One player who helped that effort greatly was Marshall’s Tyler Jones. The junior broke the school’s scoring record of 63 that was set in 1958 by Linden Meade. Jones posted a 10-under 62 in Wednesday’s final round, catapulting him from T-6 and six back of the lead, to co-medalist honors.

“He was 4 under through six and I could just see that he had ‘it’,” Marshall head coach Matt Grobe told Golfweek. “You could tell he was kind of in a zone, so as a coach, you try to stay out of his way.”

Earning co-medalist honors was Gardner-Webb’s Zack Byers. The senior out of Shelby, North Carolina, held a three-shot lead over the field heading into Wednesday’s final round. A pair of 3-under 69s gave Byers a small cushion to build upon.

Byers, who shot a 5-under 67, appeared to have a solo win in the bag but a bogey on the par-4 12th, his final hole, slid him into a tie for first alongside Jones.

Claiming the men’s team title was Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers saved their best for last, posting a tournament-best 7-under 281.

On the women’s side, it was another individual title was split.

Incarnate Word’s Ellen Nicholas and Coastal Carolina’s Tiffany Arafi shared the individual title with matching 4-under 212s.

For Arafi, the individual title aided in securing the Chanticleers the team championship and weighed down the team bus down just a bit more on their ride back to Conway, South Carolina.

“I hope it was what they needed to get confident, turn the corner, and finish strong,” Chanticleer head coach Katie Quinney told Golfweek.

Staving off a run from the Cardinals, Coastal Carolina was able to stop the bleeding at 10 over in the final round to hang on for a four stroke win over Incarnate Word.

With most teams facing just one or two regular season events left, everyone is making their final push to play their best golf come April and May. Golfweek amateur events pick back up this summer starting with the Golfweek Myrtle Beach Amateur at Prestwick Country Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina June 14-16. Clemson, S.C. — Coastal Carolina jumped all over the Tigers in the first inning and cruised to a 16-7 victory.  The Chanticleers scored ten in the first and five in the third to take a 15-0 lead.

Billy Barlow got the start for the Tiger and left very early.  Barlow gave up two hits, five runs, five earned runs and didn’t record an out.  Lindley, Dill, Tallent, Labriolla and Gordon all pitched in relief.

Coastal Carolina put ten runs on the board in the top of the first inning.  That ties the most ever given up by Clemson in the first inning of a home game.

In the top of the third Coastal Carolina plated five more runs to extend the lead to 15-0.

Clemson got on the board in the bottom of the third.  Camden Troyer walked to leadoff.  With one out Benjamin Blackwell hit a two-run homer to left to make it 15-2.

In the fourth inning Max Wagner doubled down the left field line.  With one away Dylan Brewer crushed a two-run homer over the Cajun Cafe and the Tigers trailed 15-4.

Brewer hit another home run to leadoff the bottom of the sixth.

With two outs in the seventh Wagner hit a solo home run to left center and the Tigers trailed 15-6.

The Chanticleers added another run in the eighth.

Cooper Ingle hit a leadoff home run to right in the ninth.

With the loss the Tigers fall to 15-5 on the season.  Clemson battles Winthrop Wednesday night at 6 PM.

Lions investigate TE Isaiah Likely at Coastal Carolina pro day

Detroit Lions investigate TE Isaiah Likely and other 2022 NFL draft prospects at Coastal Carolina Chanticleers pro day

Coastal Carolina doesn’t normally stand out as a must-visit pro day workout, but the Chanticleers have a few 2022 NFL draft prospects that merit attention. When Coastal Carolina held its pro day on Friday, the Detroit Lions were among the NFL teams making the trip to Conway, South Carolina to check out 14 Chanticleers hoping to make an impression for the draft.

The headliner, and a good potential fit for Detroit, is tight end Isaiah Likely. The Lions know Likely well after coaching him in the Senior Bowl week, where he stood out for his open-field athleticism and strong hands. His athletic measurements at the pro day weren’t great, clocking an underwhelming 7.33 seconds in the 3-cone drill and an unofficial 4.80 40-yard dash time at 238 pounds. Likely, who led all college TEs in touchdowns last fall with 12, is generally projected in the 4th-5th rounds.

Other Chanticleer prospects of note:

  • WR Jaivon Heiligh
  • RB Shermari Jones
  • LB Silas Kelly
  • LB/S Myles Olufemi

Oklahoma’s Caleb Williams on the rise in latest Heisman rankings

With a stellar week nine, Caleb Williams is seeing his stock rise in USA TODAY Sports’ latest Heisman rankings.

Caleb Williams took the college football world a month ago when he helped the Oklahoma Sooners overcome an 18 point halftime deficit. He hasn’t looked back, amassing 18 total touchdowns on the season and completing 70.9% of his passes, good for seventh in the nation among quarterbacks with at least 94 dropbacks on the season.

That completion percentage is better than every other quarterback in Heisman contention for 2021. And believe it or not, Caleb Williams is in Heisman contention.

In USA TODAY Sports college football analyst Paul Myerburg’s latest Heisman rankings, Caleb Williams has moved up one spot from last week to fifth.

The freshman phenom keeps stacking monster Saturdays, the latest a six-touchdown performance in the Sooners’ rout of Texas Tech. In 99 attempts since replacing Spencer Rattler midway through the Red River Shootout against Texas, Williams has thrown for 1,097 yards and 14 touchdowns against one interception. – Myerburg

Last week, Caleb Williams was ranked sixth in Myerburg’s rankings, but his performance over Tech gave him a bump over Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder and Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman.

Williams is the highest graded quarterback through week nine of the season according to Pro Football Focus. Things appear to be heating up for the true freshman quarterback who just threw for 402 yards and six touchdowns in an offensive domination of Texas Tech last Saturday.

His passer rating of 142 (NFL) is second only to Coastal Carolina’s Grayson McCall.

At this point, games played might be the only thing keeping Caleb Williams from being higher on lists for college football’s most prestigious award.

Even if Williams doesn’t end up a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, what he’s done in such a short time is pretty remarkable. He’s helped transform the Oklahoma Sooners back into the big-play offense that we’ve grown accustomed to.

Oklahoma’s scored 50 points in three of their last four games since Williams took over as the starting quarterback. Though they were blanked in the first half of their win against Kansas, Williams orchestrated a 35 point second half to help Oklahoma to the win.

The following month of the season will tell the tale for Caleb Williams and the Oklahoma Sooners. How he and OU perform in games against Baylor, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State will go a long way toward getting Williams to New York and the Sooners into the College Football Playoff.

Though they’re on a bye week, the stakes are higher now than they’ve been all season after the College Football Playoff committee ranked the Oklahoma Sooners eighth in their initial playoff rankings.

The Oklahoma Sooners will need “Superman” to be heroic over the final three games of the regular season and the Big 12 championship. Caleb Williams will have plenty of opportunities to create his signature Heisman moment over the last month of the season. The question is, will it be enough to put him in serious contention for the Heisman.

After the bye, we’ll find out.

Former Clemson and current Appalachian State quarterback Chase Brice shined in the Mountaineers’ 30-27, upset victory over No. 14 Coastal Carolina on Wednesday night at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C.

Brice, who transferred to App State after graduating from Duke last year, completed 18-of-28 passes for a career-high 347 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 34 yards on five carries.

Brice led App State to its first win against a ranked opponent since the team’s upset of Michigan in 2007. He has now thrown for 1,840 yards and 10 touchdowns with five interceptions through seven games this season.

Twitter was buzzing about Brice’s performance against the Chanticleers. Check out what some had to say about the former Tiger QB:

Coastal Carolina TE Isaiah Likely goes off vs. Arkansas State

Coastal Carolina tight end Isaiah Likely delivered a video-game stat line Thursday night against Arkansas State

If your favorite NFL team is looking for a big-play tight end prospect in the 2022 NFL draft, Coastal Carolina’s Isaiah Likely just gave an impressive audition Thursday night against Arkansas State.

Likely delivered a ridiculous stat line, needing just eight receptions to rack up 232 yards, finding the end zone on four of those eight catches. That’s 29 yards per reception for those of you keeping score at home.

While some might wonder about his level of competition, when you put up numbers like this, it moves the needle regardless of your opponent. Don’t be surprised if this performance turns some heads among NFL decision-makers.

Coastal Carolina vs Arkansas State Game Preview

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

This isn’t exactly working like it’s supposed to for Arkansas State.

It was coming off a bad 2020, but head coach Butch Jones was a good hire to help change around the defense all while keeping the O going and …

Nope. The D has allowed 52 points or more in three of the last four games, the team is dead last in total defense, and it’s not able to keep up with an offense that lost its running game because the passing attack has to spend so much time bombing away.

Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina just keeps on humming along, ripping through everything in its path.

No. 1 in the nation in third down conversions, No. 1 in passing efficiency, and without a whiff of any pressure so far outside of a road date with Buffalo, both sides of the ball are humming.

The Chanticleers won their last two games by a combined score of 112-9. However, those two games were against …

Why Arkansas State Will Win

UMass and ULM.

Yeah, beating Buffalo 28-25 on the road was nice, but Coastal Carolina has gotten nice and fat on a schedule full of NO ONE.

Kansas? Nah. Citadel, UMass, and ULM?

It’s not like Arkansas State is crushing it at 1-4, but at least it played Washington, Tulsa, and Georgia Southern on the road after getting into a firefight with Memphis.

Yeah, the D is struggling, but the O is keeping things moving through the air. Averaging 379 yards per game, ASU should be able to make this fun, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Coastal Carolina is playing too well.

QB Grayson McCall has this attack humming. He’s not missing, the O is ripping through everyone to put games away fast, and against a team that’s getting hit for over 260 rushing yards per game, it’s all going to look pretty on a national stage.

Gators snag a commitment from this experienced transferring catcher

The Gators are bracing for a major loss of talent in the 2021 MLB draft and added C Bradley Riopelle as their first transfer.

Florida entered the season as the unquestioned kings of collegiate baseball, but a season full of regression and disappointment led to an untimely exit from the playoffs. As is always the case in college sports, the team needs to prepare for a massive loss of talent from their roster, both to the pros and to the transfer portal.

The offseason has barely begun, but the Gators have already made a quick addition to the squad. Coastal Carolina catcher Bradley Riopelle has agreed to don the Orange and Blue next season, bringing with him a year of starting experience in the Sun Belt Conference. Over his three-year career at CCU, Riopelle hit .260/.396/.521. However, his 2021 season, in which he hit .270/.354/.459, was his only year with over 50 plate appearances.

[exco_embed id=”e5869bc6-faf6-4b7a-8c06-b5610c96a8fe”]

Known for his power at the plate and defensive ability, Riopelle caught the attention of Florida’s Craig Bell pretty much immediately.

“Many JUCOs reached out but Florida was the first Division I program to call,” said Riopelle to GatorsTerritory [Editor’s note: story has since been deleted]. “Coach Bell then asked about my interest in Florida and also mentioned an older catcher like myself would be a great fit for Florida.”

The Gators need to bolster their depth at the catching position due to the likely departure of the incumbent Nathan Hickey to the MLB draft. However, Riopelle may not be the offensively reliable veteran that he seems on the surface.

It’s a big jump from the SBC to the SEC. The pressure’s on – he’ll be facing the toughest competition of his life while competing with his own teammates for a starting job. His strikeout rate skyrocketed during his only full season with CCU, which is a big red flag.

The biggest red flag? His batting average on balls in play (BABIP) ballooned to .420 during the 2021 season. Generally considered shorthand for luck, and thereby sustainability of a performance, BABIP averages out to .300 at virtually every level of play. Scaling his season’s performance to an average BABIP, it’s revealed that Riopelle hit the equivalent of .192/.276/.381.

None of this is to say that Riopelle is doomed to failure with the Gators. Florida’s baseball staff is an intelligent one and clearly saw something to make him their first transfer of the offseason. However, he’s not a sure starter and will have to earn his chances on the field with the program.
