We did not have the best week last week as we ended Saturday at 2-2. The Oregon Ducks slaughtered the BYU Cougars and my assumption that Notre Dame would bounce back was wrong as they are still in the driver seat of the struggle bus after barely winning against the California Bears.

The Oklahoma Sooners held their end of the bargain though as they destroyed the Nebraska Huskers and N.C. State Wolfpack had a nice outing against Texas Tech. Let’s see what damage we can make on Thursday.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Preview 2022

And now the real work begins.

Coastal Carolina proved the 2020 breakthrough season wasn’t a fluke with a fantastic 11-2 run that might have fallen short of a Sun Belt title, but was still impressive.

Not only did the Chanticleers keep it all going, and not only did they win a bowl game, but those two losses came by a grand total of five points.

That was amazing, but now the Sun Belt is stronger, Coastal Carolina is a circle game on the schedule, and there’s a whole lot of experience and talent to replace on both sides of the ball.

Head coach Jamey Chadwell has the right offensive system, and he’s got the quarterback in Grayson McCall. Other than that, the program has as big a rebuild as any in college football.

It might be a fight to come close to the success of the last two years, but with McCall, and with the systems in place, Coastal Carolina might still be one of the stars of the Sun Belt.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Preview 2022: Offense

Grayson McCall might not have been the pro prospect many are/were projecting, but his decision to return for another year means the high-powered offense has its guy to make all the new guys better.

Coastal Carolina led the nation in third down conversions and passing efficiency, and was fifth overall averaging 495 yards per game. The downfield plays should still be there, and the running game will still bust off big plays with the big holes the offense creates. But it all comes down to McCall. As long as he’s running the show, the O will work. But …

Who will McCall throw to? Leading receiver Jaivon Heiligh is done, and TE Isaiah Likely is about to be a factor for the Baltimore Ravens. RB Braydon Bennett is the leading returning receiver with 24 grabs. but no one else returning caught more than six passes.

The offensive line should be a positive with some time. All-star guard Willie Lampkin is the anchor, and the good depth of last year should be able to take over right away – these guys know the system. 1,040-yard rusher Shermari Jones is done, but Bennett can handle a bigger role and speedy Reese White ran for 515 yards last season.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Preview 2022: Defense

The offense gets all the headlines and love, but the Coastal Carolina defense has done its part, too. It allowed fewer yards per play than the 2020 version, it gave up more than 25 points just four times, and held teams to under 100 rushing yards five times in the last ten games.

But like the offense, there are wholesale changes with the back seven gutted. However …

The line is okay, even with the loss of star DT CJ Brewer. Josaiah Stewart had a huge freshman season with 12.5 sacks, there’s size on the inside with 345-pound Jerrold Clark on the nose, and overall there shouldn’t be a big step back in production. But …

Just about every key tackler from the linebacking corps is gone. The group isn’t totally starting from scratch – a few guys who saw time last year are around – but this will be one of the team’s biggest areas of early concern.

D’Jordan Strong is one of the Sun Belt’s best all-around corners. He’s back along with three good backups from last year who should be able to step up and produce without a problem.

Coastal Carolina 47, Northern Illinois 41: Tailgreeter Cure Bowl

5. Let’s start with the end

For those who didn’t see it, down 47-41 in the final moments, Northern Illinois was deep in Coastal Carolina territory with time winding down. On 4th and 1, QB Rocky Lombardi connected with Miles Joiner for a four-yard play, Joiner hit the ground and the ball fell out of bounds.

It was ruled a catch, the officials weren’t sure, they got the ball to the line as the clock kept rolling, and Northern Illinois didn’t get another snap when it probably should’ve had one last-gasp tick on the final play.

Maybe.

It was all messed up, but even with the sloppy ending it was still a fantastic game.

4. It was a great showcase for both conferences

The star of the MAC this season showed off what life is going to be like under Thomas Hammock going forward.

The Northern Illinois program went from winless last year, to the conference championship, to within a tick of a huge bowl victory. It did it by being physical, tough, and with runners who kept working their way down the field. It was a power win by the MAC’s power team.

Coastal Carolina showed off just how fun the Sun Belt is. This was the offense and the team everyone fell in love with last year, and this win proved the program is going to keep on rolling.

It was the best of what both Group of Five conferences can be.

3. Northern Illinois was terrific … on offense

A 12-point underdog, the MAC Champion was totally disrespected – and it played like it from the start.

Yeah, the Coastal Carolina offense ripped through the Huskie defense without a problem, but the other side of the ball was dominant.

NIU had the ball for close to 40 minutes, it blasted away for a physical 335 yards, and it wore down the Coastal Carolina defense as the game went on. But again, the NIU defense just couldn’t come up with that one big stop late, and the game’s lone turnover – a fumble by Lombardi after a great run – turned out to be the one blink between the two sides.

2. Coastal Carolina was terrific … on offense

The second half of the season was a grind for the Chanticleers.

Star QB Grayson McCall was banged up, there were a slew of tough battles, and the team that was supposed to roll to a Sun Belt championship struggled to get here.

Forget about controlling the clock – Coastal Carolina came up with huge play after huge play, averaging eight yards per carry and 10.5 yards per throw.

All of the stars came out. McCall threw for 315 yards and four scores, TE Isaiah Likely caught seven passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns, Braydon Bennett ran for 108 yards and two scores and caught four passes for 47 yards and a touchdown …

514 yards later, Coastal Carolina got its 11th win of the season.

1. Now THAT’S what you want an early bowl to be

Over 1,000 yards of total offense, big plays, a relatively clean game – outside of a key Northern Illinois fumble – and both teams doing what they do best. It was a whole lot of fun, there were a whole slew of big moments, and the two teams played like they really, really wanted to win – because they did.

It was Coastal Carolina’s first ever bowl win, it was a game for Northern Illinois to use as motivation all offseason, and it was pure bowl game entertainment to get the bowl season rolling.

Coastal Carolina vs Northern Illinois Tailgreeter Cure Bowl Preview

Be stunned if this isn’t among the best of the early bowls. Both Group of Five programs are coming off terrific campaigns, and both will be well motivated to close with a season-validating win.

This is all about the time of possession battle. Northern Illinois had the ball for over 33 minutes per game with the ground attack. Coastal Carolina had it for over 32 minutes with its quick hitting passing game.

Northern Illinois went from 0-6 in 2020 to the champion of the MAC in one year under head coach Thomas Hammock, getting the job done with a ball-control offense behind a tremendous offensive line and fantastic running game that finished fifth in the nation. Now this year’s breakthrough team has to hold down last year’s version.

Coastal Carolina played exactly like it was supposed to over the first half of the season, ripping through everyone with one of the nation’s most efficient attacks. It spreads out defenses, dominates on third downs – it led all of college football in passing efficiency and third down conversions – but two close losses by a total of five points ruined a repeat of the 2020 magic.

Coastal Carolina vs South Alabama Game Preview

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Grayson McCall is okay?

He was supposed to be done for at least the regular season, and likely the year, with a shoulder injury suffered in late October, and then … poof. He was back and winging it around for over 300 yards in a win over Texas State.

The offense still worked without him, but the Chanticleers lost to Georgia State the week before. He returned, and five touchdown passes later all was right with the world.

The ultra-efficient passing attack might not go off on a solid South Alabama pass D, but all it has to do is be effective and consistent because …

Why South Alabama Will Win

The South Alabama offense has hit a snag.

Granted, it’s because it had to deal with Tennessee Appalachian State, and Troy over the last three weeks all on the road, but there are issues.

The running game hasn’t been nearly good enough, but this is still the best team in the Sun Belt at controlling the clock. The Jaguars should be able to keep McCall and company on the sidelines just enough to keep this game from getting too ugly, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers are going to do in the South Alabama hopes of getting to six wins and bowl eligibility.

It’ll play just well enough at home to make it a fight, but Coastal Carolina just  doesn’t make enough mistakes to matter. Just when it seems like this is going to get interesting, the downfield playmaking ability of the Chanticleer offense will take over.
