Texans add two new coaches to 2020 staff

The Houston Texans have added two new coaches to the staff in DeNarius McGhee and Deon Broomfield.

The Houston Texans continue to make additions to their 2020 coaching staff.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans have added former Montana State running backs coach DeNarius McGhee as an offensive quality control coach.

The Texans also filled a void left when secondary coach Anthony Midget took the same job with the Tennessee Titans and the Texans simply promoted assistant secondary coach D’Anton Lynn to replace Midget. Houston hired former Indiana State cornerbacks coach Deon Broomfield as a defensive assistant.

The Texans have not yet announced their final coaching staff. Last year, the club did not announce their final changes to the coaching staff and front office until Feb. 5, the Tuesday after Super Bowl LIII between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams.

Broncos interview John Pagano for open OLB coach position

The Broncos interviewed John Pagano for their outside linebackers coach position.

The Denver Broncos interviewed longtime NFL assistant coach John Pagano for their vacant outside linebackers coach position on Thursday, according to The Denver Post’s Ryan O’Halloran. John is the younger brother of Chuck Pagano, who interviewed for the Broncos’ head coach position last year.

Pagano, 52, coached under Denver coach Vic Fangio for three seasons as a defensive assistant with the Indianapolis Colts from 1999-2001 (Fangio was the Colts’ defensive coordinator at the time). Pagano is not the only candidate the Broncos have interviewed but he appears to be the favorite to get the job.

Pagano has been coaching in the NFL since 1996. He served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator with the Oakland Raiders in 2017 before joining the Houston Texans as their senior defensive assistant and outside linebackers coach, a position he held the last two seasons.

Denver was left with an opening out OLBs coach after Brandon Staley left the team to become the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator.

Vic Fangio comments on Broncos hiring Mike Shula as new QBs coach

“What’s most impressive is Mike’s proven track record coaching quarterbacks at many different stages of their careers,” Vic Fangio said.

The Denver Broncos hired Mike Shula as their new quarterbacks coach on Tuesday. The son of Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history, Shula spent the last two years as the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator under Pat Shurmur.

Shurmur joined Vic Fangio‘s staff as Denver’s new offensive coordinator earlier this month and the team brought Shula in to serve under him. Fangio released a statement on the hiring of Shula on Tuesday.

“Mike is a well-respected coach around the league, especially when it comes to developing quarterbacks,” Fangio said. “The familiarity he has with Pat is an added bonus, but what’s most impressive is Mike’s proven track record coaching quarterbacks at many different stages of their careers.

“We’re fortunate to add someone with his depth of experience, coaching ability and unique perspective to our staff.”

Shula was a three-year starter at Alabama from 1984-1986, leading the Crimson Tide to wins in the Aloha Bowl and the Sun Bowl. He then spent one season as a backup QB with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before transitioning to coaching, joining Tampa Bay’s staff as an offensive assistant.

Shula has been an offensive coordinator or QBs coach with five NFL teams. Before coaching under Shurmur in New York, he spent seven years with the Carolina Panthers and helped Cam Newton win league MVP honors in 2015. He will now work with Drew Lock, Denver’s 23-year-old QB.

Broncos hire Mike Shula as new quarterbacks coach

The Broncos have hired Mike Shula to be their new quarterbacks coach.

The Denver Broncos have hired former New York Giants offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mike Shula to be their new quarterbacks coach, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Denver had an opening at the position after moving on from T.C. McCartney, who coached the team’s quarterbacks in 2019.

This marks the second change to the offensive coaching staff the Broncos have made this offseason. Earlier this month, Denver fired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello and replaced him with former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur. The Broncos then fired McCartney, clearing the way for Shula to follow Shurmur to Denver.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio clearly wanted to make improving the team’s offense a priority this offseason.

Shula, 54, is the son of former coach Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history. Don Shula won the Associated Press’ Coach of the Year award four times during his 35 years as a coach.

Mike Shula has been coaching in the NFL since 1988. Before a two-year run with the Giants from 2018-2019, Shula coached the Carolina Panthers’ quarterbacks (2011-2012) and then was their offensive coordinator (2013-2017). He has served as a QBs coach or offensive coordinator for five NFL teams.

Playing under Shula last season, New York quarterback Daniel Jones completed 61.9 percent of his passes for 3,027 yards with 24 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 12 starts. Shula will now get to work with Denver’s young quarterback, Drew Lock, who won four of the five games he started last season.

Broncos interview Mike Shula for quarterbacks coach opening

The Broncos are interviewing Mike Shula for their open quarterbacks coach position.

When the Broncos fired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, they had a replacement candidate in mind: former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur. When they team fired quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney, they probably had a replacement in mind for him, too, likely from Shurmur’s former staff.

Former New York offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mike Shula is in Denver interviewing for the team’s open QBs coach position, according to multiple media reports. Ryan O’Halloran of The Denver Post was the first to report the news Thursday.

Shula, 54, was likely the Broncos’ top choice for the job after they brought in Shurmur. Shula, the son of legendary NFL coach Don Shula, coached under Shurmur with the Giants over the last two seasons.

Before landing in New York, Shula served as the Panthers’ quarterbacks coach (2011-2012) and offensive coordinator (2013-2017). Under Shula, Carolina quarterback Cam Newton had a career year in 2015, claiming league MVP honors after scoring 45 total touchdowns.

More recently, Shula worked with Giants quarterback Daniel Jones in 2019. Jones completed 61.9 percent of his passes for 3,027 yards with 24 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 13 games last season. He threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns in three different games.

Shula is clearly the favorite to become Denver’s next QBs coach.

Ex-Broncos OC Rich Scangarello to interview for Browns’ opening

Former Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello will interview for the Browns’ open offensive coordinator position.

After being fired by the Broncos last week, offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello might land on his feet quickly.

Scangarello will interview with the Browns for their open offensive coordinator position, according to a report from Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. Scangarello will be interviewing to potentially join the staff of new head coach Kevin Stefanski, who was hired last week.

Scangarello comes from the Kyle Shanahan coaching tree and spent just one year as Denver’s offensive coordinator before being fired. Broncos coach Vic Fangio replaced Scangarello with Pat Shurmur, who served as the Giants’ head coach from 2018-2019.

After firing quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney, Denver might target former Giants offensive coordinator/QBs coach Mike Shula. New York has hired former Cowboys coach Jason Garrett to be their new offensive coordinator, which means Shula won’t return for the 2020 season.

Shula coached under Shurmur with the Giants over the last two years. He is the son of Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history.

Pete Carroll, Seahawks staff to coach NFC roster in Pro Bowl

Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks staff will be coaching the NFC roster in the 2020 NFL Pro Bowl in Orlando on January 26.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was likely hoping to square off against John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl in Miami this year, but the 2020 Pro Bowl in Orlando will have to do instead.

After falling to the Packers last Sunday to end their season, Carroll and his staff will be coaching the NFC squad in the exhibition matchup. Harbaugh and his crew will head the AFC team.

The NFC and AFC Pro Bowl coaches are represented by the staff from the teams with the best records who were eliminated in the divisional round of the playoffs.

“Really to see the caliber of the other players,” Carroll explained Monday of the opportunity. “I mean, we’ve been with our guys for six months. To have a chance to compare what these guys are capable of looking like. It’s not going to be the most intense preparation that we’ll ever go through. We’ll be around them. I’m looking forward to the game as much as anything.

“For comparison purposes, it’ll be good.”

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and linebacker Bobby Wagner – who may not participate due to injuries – were selected to this year’s Pro Bowl roster.

The Pro Bowl is set to kick off at 12:00 p.m. PT on January 26 from Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

Broncos fire quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney

After hiring a new offensive coordinator, the Broncos have fired quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney.

The changes to the Broncos’ offensive coaching staff continue.

After moving on from Rich Scangarello, Denver hired former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur to be their new offensive coordinator. It appears that Shurmur now plans to bring in his own quarterbacks coach.

The Broncos have fired quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney, according to multiple media reports. Benjamin Allbright of KOA Radio was the first to report the news of McCartney’s firing on Wednesday.

McCartney played QB at LSU and went on to serve as an assistant coach with the University of Colorado and LSU before making the jump to the NFL, spending time with the Browns and 49ers.

McCartney spent three seasons in San Francisco before following Scangarello to Denver last year. He helped groom rookie Drew Lock in 2019 and the quarterback won four of his five games as a starter.

After firing McCartney, the Broncos may target former New York QBs coach/offensive coordinator Mike Shula. Shula’s familiarity with Shurmur likely makes him the favorite to replace McCartney in Denver.

Broncos hire Pat Shurmur as new offensive coordinator

The Broncos have officially hired Pat Shurmur, who will replace former offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello.

It’s official, the Broncos have a new offensive coordinator.

After the team fired Rich Scangarello on Sunday, reports quickly emerged that the team planned to hire former Giants coach Pat Shurmur to replace Scangarello. Denver officially announced the hire on Tuesday.

Shurmur hasn’t found much success as a head coach — he has a 19-46 record — but he is a respected offensive mind. Shurmur won AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2017 as a coordinator after helping the Vikings reach the NFC Championship game.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio and general manager John Elway feel that Shurmur is an upgrade over Scangarello. The stats from last season reflect that belief, but not by much.

Denver’s offense averaged 298.6 yards per game (28th) and 17.6 points per game (28th). New York’s offense averaged 298.6 yards per game (23rd) and 21.3 points per game (18th). Shurmur’s 2019 numbers are better, of course, but they still ranked in the bottom half of the league.

The Broncos now have two assistant coaches with head coach experience — Shurmur and offensive line coach Mike Munchak, who served as the Titans’ head coach from 2011-2013.
