UNDER 47.5 (-110) is the lean, mostly based upon Clemson’s inability to score points, as well as the suffocating defense of the Tigers.

Clemson has struggled its way to a 115th-place ranking in total offense over the first half of the season. The Tigers do enter this contest on a two-game win streak, and those victories are part of a close-game trend for Clemson. Five of the team’s six games have been decided by one score.

The Panthers are coming off three straight wins by margins of 20 points or more. Last Saturday at Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh outgained the Hokies, 411 yards to 224. The Panthers didn’t allow a score until garbage time. But it has been the Pitt offense that has really impressed this fall. The Panthers rank fifth in the nation with a total yards-per-game average of 533.5.

This is an interesting ACC matchup but one that is perhaps more interesting than it is bet-able. Much of the calculation here lies in where one sees the Tigers’ offense and the Panthers’ defense. As weak and strong, respectively, as the numbers indicate?

Peg Pittsburgh with a slight lean, but it’s worth shooting for the relative on the Panthers minus the 3-and-a-hook. PASS.

Against the spread

The Tigers have lost seven in a row ATS. But Clemson did cover a 24-point spread in last year’s meeting with Pitt. The Tigers routed the Panthers, 52-17 (Nov. 28).

But that was certainly a different Clemson team, and this year’s Panther defense gives Pittsburgh just enough of an edge. Solid analytics on the Panther front-seven is especially instructive in pegging the advantage for the home side.

TAKE PITTSBURGH -3.5 (-102).

Over/Under

A strong Pittsburgh passing game and at least the potential of much more from the Clemson side make this an intriguing Over. Especially with a downward drift on the total in the back half of the week. On at least a small lean, this one is now ripe for some push-back.

The most recent close tussle was a 19-13 victory over Boston College Oct. 2. Clemson has cranked out just 324.2 yards per game, which ranks 117th in the nation.

Syracuse has played in three straight games decided by 3 points each. The most recent was a 40-37 overtime loss to now-No. 16 Wake Forest Oct. 9. The Orange piled up a season-high 354 rushing yards and 514 total yards in that contest. For the season, the SU rushing attack ranks 10th (244.5 yards per game).

The Orange have piled up 22 sacks but in chunks against outmatched foes. Peg Clemson QB D.J. Uiagalelei as being undervalued a tad here.

Clemson (-800) is a good bet to bounce back as a third loss in five games is unfathomable. But you can’t risk eight times your potential return on this team that has been more inconsistent than anybody in the ACC.

AVOID, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

BOSTON COLLEGE +15.5 (-112) is a very good play against a Clemson -15.5 (-108) side that hasn’t covered in four tries this season. Grosel has proven that he is capable of running this offense and keeping them on track.

There is just something missing from this Tigers offense, and them beating anybody by two touchdowns, let alone an unbeaten and fundamentally sound team, seems rather unlikely.

Over/Under

OVER 45.5 (-110) is worth a small-unit play. Clemson’s offense is going to get revved up sooner or later, and B.C. hasn’t really missed a beat with Grosel under center. I wouldn’t go crazy and slam the Over here, but we’ll see enough points.

Despite all its talent and lofty preseason ranking, Clemson has failed to cover the spread in any of its first three games, most recently squeaking out a 14-8 win over Georgia Tech as a 27.5-point favorite. The offense is averaging just 22.0 points per game and its 322.7 yards per game ranks 114th in the country.

NC State lost 24-10 on the road at Mississippi State in Week 2, but they’ve sandwiched that dud with two blowout wins against South Florida (45-0) and FCS Furman (45-7). The Wolfpack’s defense has been stout, particularly against the run (72.7 yards per game; 14th nationally).

Clemson is certainly the more talented team, but giving 9.5 points on the road in a hostile environment is asking a lot for an offense that hasn’t clicked all year.

The Wolfpack have been great at home recently, covering seven of their last eight games at Carter-Finley Stadium since the start of last season.

Look for NC STATE +10.5 (-120) to keep Clemson out of the end zone just enough to keep this within single digits.

Over/Under

Given Clemson’s struggles on offense with NC State’s stout defense, it’s no surprise to see a pretty low number here. Five of these teams’ six combined games have hit the Under this year, so go to that well again until either offense proves it can score.

CLEMSON -48.5 (-120) is going to take out a lot of frustration on poor South Carolina State +48.5 (-105) of the FCS.

The Tigers could get nothing going against a suffocating UGA defense last week. Look for the run game to get going for Clemson, and for QB D.J. Uiagalelei to get on track with some easy long touchdown plays.

The last time these teams met Sept. 17, 2016, Clemson pounded South Carolina State 59-0. Prior to that on Sept. 6, 2014, the Tigers won 73-3. In fact, that 2014 drumming came after a Clemson loss to Georgia to open the season.

The closest the Bulldogs have ever come in this series was a 39-point loss in 2013.

Over/Under

OVER 56.5 (-110) is the play, and Clemson has the opportunity to take care of business all on their own. After a loss last week, where the offense looked mighty anemic, there will be no calling off of the dogs this weekend. They are going to work things out in all facets of the game, and a 60-burger is easily attainable.

It’s a new chapter for Clemson on offense. QB D.J. Uiagalelei filled in admirably for Trevor Lawrence in two starts last season, throwing for 914 yards with 5 TD and 0 INT. He’ll be protected by an excellent offensive line, elite talent at the skill positions and a loaded defense led by arguably the best defensive line in the country.

Georgia is just as talented, particularly on defense. They return most of a front-seven core that led the nation in rushing defense last year allowing just 2.4 yards per attempt, and they poached star CB Derion Kendrick from Clemson via the transfer portal this offseason. The offense hit its stride once QB J.T. Daniels took over the starting job in Week 12, averaging 37 points per game over Daniels’ four starts.

PASS on the spread and take the Bulldogs straight up with a better payout.

Over/Under

Clemson returns almost everybody on a defense that ranked 15th in the nation with 327 yards allowed per game last year. Georgia’s was even better (321 yards per game; 12th). Expect this to be a defensive slugfest as both offenses shake off some Week One rust.

The preseason favorite to win the SEC East, Georgia lost two games in 2020 but looked much improved on offense once QB J.T. Daniels took over for the team’s last four games. Daniels will get help from an experienced and talented offensive line with five-star talent at the skill positions, while the defense should be its typical elite self under head coach Kirby Smart.

Clemson made its sixth straight playoff appearance in 2020, losing 49-28 to Ohio State in the semifinals. They lost electric tandem QB Trevor Lawrence and RB Travis Etienne to the NFL, but QB D.J. Uiagalelei looks ready to lead the offense while most starters return on a top-15 defense (327 yards per game) from last season.

As I said in this week’s Bet Slippin’ Podcast, San Diego State (-160) is ranked 337th in defensive 3-point attempt rate.

And if the Aztecs let Syracuse guard Buddy Boeheim and Co. chuck 3-pointers, the Orange are going to roll them.

Boeheim is one of the hottest shooters entering the tournament and has connected on 46.1% of threes in the past 11 games. His father, Jim, whose Hall of Fame resume speaks for itself, come tourney time: ‘Cuse is always a threat to make a run.

I lean SYRACUSE (+135) for a quarter-unit only because the Orange plus the points is a wiser play.

Against the spread (ATS)

Definitely BET SYRACUSE +3 (-110) heavier than or instead of the money line.

The Orange have covered four straight NCAA Tournament games as an underdog. Also, the Aztecs are starting to show some cracks in their armor as they are just 1-4 ATS in their last five games.

Over/Under (O/U)

This game is ripe to go OVER 138.5 (-110). Both teams play up-tempo and shoot threes at an above-average rate.

As a product of Jim Boeheim’s 2-3 zone defense, Syracuse is ranked 327th in defensive 3-point attempt rate, which is trouble against a San Diego State team ranked 25th in 3-point shooting.

Finally, the market has steamed this total up from a 137.5-point opener and I’d rather follow the market than fade it. BET OVER 138.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

March Madness: Clemson vs. Rutgers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Clemson Tigers odds and lines, with March Madness Round 1 picks and predictions.

The 11-seed Rutgers Scarlet Knights (15-11) meet the 7-seed Clemson Tigers (16-7) in the first round of the Midwest Regional Friday at 9:20 p.m. ET at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Below, we analyze the Rutgers-Clemson odds and lines, with March Madness NCAA Tournament picks and predictions.

Clemson was upset 67-64 as an 8-point favorite by Miami last Wednesday in the second round of the ACC Tournament. It was the Tigers’ second loss in their last three games following a five-game win streak; they’re 4-4 against the spread over their last eight games.

The Scarlet Knights drubbed Indiana 61-50 in the second round of the Big 10 Tournament only to get shellacked by eventual conference champion No. 2 Illinois 90-68 in the quarterfinals.

Rutgers started the season with a six-game win streak that was punctuated by a 91-88 upset of then-No. 13 Illinois. It finished the regular season 3-4 straight up and 4-3 ATS in the final seven games.

This is only the second NCAA Tournament appearance for Clemson in the last 10 seasons while Rutgers hasn’t been to the Big Dance since 1991.

Neither team gets to the charity stripe a lot, but Clemson is 31st in free-throw percentage and Rutgers is 336th so I have questions on whether or not the Scarlet Knights can close out a tight game.

Furthermore, according to Ken Pom, Clemson is 20th in adjusted defensive efficiency, and Rutgers is 289th in 3-point percentage and 284th in 3-point attempt rate.

The Scarlet Knights not being able to space the floor and being unwilling to attack the basket because of poor free-throw shooting should make the job easier for the Clemson defense.

TAKE CLEMSON (+105) for 1.25 units.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS unless it gets up to Clemson +2 or higher because I’d rather just take the Tigers to win outright at plus-money than get only a point of insurance.

Over/Under (O/U)

Rutgers-Clemson figures to be a “rock fight” between two slow-paced teams that play better defense than offense.

That is accounted for in BetMGM‘s projected total for this game and I’m hesitant to follow a crowd of bettors that have steamed this number down from a 128-point opener.

I lean Under 125.5 (-105) but ultimately have to PASS because of the line movement.
